It always astounds me that the 900 year old buildings are still sound buildings standing strong but buildings 60 years old are demolished as they are deemed either un-useable or unsafe. What a beautiful city Durham is. Another to wander around for a week. Thank you for the tour Simon and Will. =-)
It certainly defies logic. You can even say the same for many buildings of the Victorian era. The grand civic structures in US state capitals are a good example of this. My Lunch Break is a good channel for this kind of content.
On my first visit in 2013, I was amazed at how old buildings were still standing & being used. Here in the US, it's sad what is torn down to make way for something that doesn't last but for a few years. Our east coast, New England area have beautiful saved structures that date back to the 1600s.
Whenever a city tears something historic down i feel awful. however, we have always done so as a species. but I appreciate seeing these lasting beauties.
This was extra special for me. My ancestors dating back to the 1500's lived and died in Durham. It's wonderful to see where they lived, conducted daily lives and raised their children. My grandfather was the first born in the USA. Thank you for letting me join you in sharing this special place.
You are always welcome to visit Durham in person. I suspect you'd enjoy it (and you could visit York & Whitby which both lie to the south of Durham and are FULL of history).
Thanks for the beautiful images of this town! The cathedrals are very special, it was an unbelievable amount of work to make these works of art. Also a beautiful area to walk.
Incredible! Durham is such a beautiful, charming & interesting City! The Cathedral is absolutely magnificent & has such a fascinating history! Totally captivating! The entire City is truly amazing! Thank you for sharing this delightful City, along with such amazing footage & fascinating Commentary!
Que hermosa ciudad , con casas muy antiguas , iglesias que cuentan historias , calles , el rio , además de un día hermoso con sol . Hermoso . Saludos de Chile.
Durham looks like a beautiful place filled with stunning old buildings and history. Definitely one for the bucket list, thanks for another great video, much appreciated.
These little towns are such a delightful way to spend a weekend. I could never get bored if I lived in England! So much history to explore. Thanks again!❤
The big problem is being able to travel to them in a weekend. You start close to home and then you get further and further away, until you just can’t do the journey’s easily. We need to move!! 😂😂
I love this, I have lived less than 45 minutes from Axbridge all my 53 years of life, and never knew any of the facts that you find. Really looking forward to hearing about Wells next week, you really do some great research into the places you visit. Thankyou for visiting Somerset xxx❤
@MemorySeekers Your videos are amazing, I'm so glad I found you around 2/3 years ago. Have watched a couple more than once, Jane Austen and Charles Dickens to name a couple. Thankyou again Guys xx❤️💙💙
Thank you so much for letting us tag along , one can see why it’s so popular .It’s setting is quite magnificent and it’s well preserved buildings just add to its attractions . You were lucky with the weather this visit !
Thank you for another excellent video. You guys have become outstanding film makers, in my opinion. It was such a treat to visit Durham with you, a place I have never been to, and to see it from so many different angles, places and views, in a way I would never be able to see it, even if I did have the good fortune to visit it myself! And the joy is I can go back and re-watch and re-visit anytime thanks to you. You really give us such a special gift with all your videos, and provide an invaluable service. It is such a lovely escape from a world too often in turmoil, and filled with so much doom and gloom according to the "news" media. Whenever I start feeling a bit down then I think what are the Memory Seekers up to, and look for your latest effort. It never fails to cheer me up and restore my sanity, reminding me what the majority of ordinary, decent folk are about.
What a lovely tour, guys, thank you. I really like Durham. I think it's one of the best English cities for its architecture and history - and one of the things I love the most is - did you notice?? NO horrible cables and double yellow lines. I don't know where people park, but if you compare it to a town like Rye, it's great for taking pictures of attractive houses and old buildings without the ugliness of cables, signage, spy cameras and barricades of cars ruining the scene! And at night - when we were there some years back, now, the lighting at night is very subdued, maybe it was gas, had the feel - but yes, well worth spending a few days, if not a week, as you can jump off there to plenty of other places of interest. Oh! from a suddenly stormy Tasmania - thanks, & happy travels. You'll have to go back to visit the Castle, as it is fascinating - I wonder if the student residents appreciate being steeped amidst such history?
Never felt overcrowded by the wheeled dragons on my visit to Rye 14 years ago even when domiciled facing a thoroughfare. There were plenty of quiet country walks around the locality in addition to the historic town itself. The sound of the church bells resounding across that flat land was quite magical. 😊
That was incredibly beautiful. The whole place is incredible. All those beautiful buildings, totally gorgeous. Thanks for taking me along. Please take care
Outstanding architecture with wonderful church, I enjoyed watching. No wonder it took 7 yrs, for the result is so worth I loved it. Whole video is so marvelous & perfectly narrated, I learn so much in each video. Thank u both for sharing good stuff as always 😊
Went to see a few tribute bands at the cathedral. From the moment they started I realised why they built the roof that way; acoustics were superb and it was as if the whole ceiling was a speaker. There was no mistake; the bishops words were meant to come from above.
Your videos are always so well done, and I look forward to a new one each week. Thank you for getting up early to show us the unobstructed views of Durham. Also, you happened to mention my surname in this video, which was a thrill for me.
Fabulous video esp for folks like me who haven't been to Durham... but I will certainly be going. Thank you for the trouble you both go to make these videos available for us viewers. God bless
I wouldn't worry about not getting into the castle, mate. I grew up in Newcastle and never successfully did so, even though my dad went to Durham School. 😂
Our lunch stop on the way up to Northumberland, lovely vity with plenty to see and lots of places to eat, but like you say Saturdays in Durham are stupid .
So I looked it up on my photos of the visit and the information board that sits next to the door says knocker? Then I looked up the website and that says ring and it even goes to say there was not evidence it was used as a knocker?? Strange the would then put that in the information board at the door?
@@MemorySeekers It is strange. I guess the great majority of people wouldsay it's a knocker. I have two books about the Cathedral. Durham Cathedral Light of the North describes it as a knocker. Durham Cathedral History Fabric and Culture's index says sanctuary ring door knocker and describes it in the text as a ring on one page, but on another it is called a knocker. Btw, great drone shots.
The great cathedral was begun during the reign of William 2nd however he seems to have been all but airbrushed out of English history as he is very seldom mentioned. The only time we hear anything about him now is in regard to his mysterious death at only 44 during a hunting expedition though he was a very influential monarch.
@ You are welcome and thank you for this upload with your excellent filming. As an architectural historian I consider Durham Cathedral among the World’s greatest buildings.
Sad that William had to take his throne back from Harold the usurper. Imagine how much better it would have been if Harold simply called upon William and showed him to the throne. But we can't change history. Maybe however we can change a few minds. William was married to a descendant of Alfred the Great. But Britain fails to recognize her in any of the stories.
Durham cathedral is where Saint cuthbert was buried a tomb inside the cathedral... Pilgrims from all over Europe came to pray and miracles were seen..... It was Catholic built by catholics.... St cuthbert is the patron saint of Northumberland.... 4 monks had to carry his coffin from lindisfarne in the 7th century to escape the viking raids... For years they travelled stopping all over the north East in hideaway places.... To keep from being captured by vikings... When they came to Durham the cart where he laid pulled by horses stopped and wouldn't go any further... Monks took this as a sign... That this place is where he will rest... So they built the first church on the spot made of wood in the 8th century.... Which is where he lay until the 16th century and protestant reformation... An army was sent to Durham to destroy the relics of St cuthbert.... But the monks took him away and replaced him with another... Story has it that he was un- corrupted and looked like he was sleeping when the monks opened his coffin in 11th century.... Only his garments were decayed.... And his whereabouts is a mystery... England was catholic for a thousand yrs... The English were robbed of the true faith of our ancestors... Henry 8th forced this imposter on us.... Built on lust, greed and power... Much blood is on his hands and Elizabeth 1, also Cromwell.... Devil's... England is the dowry of "Blessed virgin Mary" and we were blessed "Merry England" it was... 500yrs of lies of those who rule over us... England will return to her Catholic roots.. Stolen from us.... The faith of our people the English.... Christ is king.... God bless! Ave Maria!

We certainly don’t use the quality materials anymore and would not be able to build anything half as good these days!

That pub at the end of the video looked cozy
It was a lovely place, wish we could have filmed more but did not want to film other patrons. They were very friendly.

Hello Simon / Will , great video Durham has a lot to see its a place i know very little about , thanks for this well worth a trip.

The Sanctuary' knocker', correct name Sanctuary Ring is a replica. The original is in the Cathedral's museum.😀
