Installing the Auxiliary Power Switch Kit in a Rushmore Road Glide

  • This is installing the Auxiliary Power Switch Kit (71400129) in my 2021 Road #Glide. If you want to use accessories that require switched power, this kit is a good way to get the power needed. You can install it your self, and save money. It’s for any Harley-Davidson Rushmore Touring Models.
    I was asked what was the “Potential Outcome/Advantage of installing the Switch Kit? I feel it is having power under the seat for anything you want to add without having a spaghetti mess in the stock wiring. The addition of the Switch Kit adds the wiring/plug under the seat to control Accent Lighting, or Heated Accessories.
    When I went to add the switch kit, I searched TH-cam To help with the installation. I only found one installing the kit in an M8 Softail. And he still cut/soldered wiring. Nothing for late model Touring Models. So, here it is.
    The only down side of Harley now offering this kit is this.
    On my 2009 Road Glide, Harley-Davidson provided a plug under the seat, controlled with the Dash Accessory Switch Stock. This way I could control my Accent Lighting without any extra wiring. But Harley-Davidson now makes the Accessory Plug something you must pay extra to have. True, it added a second switch that has a Relay. It’s just how Harley has made something stock into additional cost option.
    I looked and didn’t find any examples of the installation in the Rushmore Touring Models. The Harley-Davidson instruction are ok, but not clear on location of some plugs.

      I’m going to install the Heated Grips next. The instructions say for you to turn them on using the knob on the end of the grip. But I’m going to use the Accessory Switch Assembly I installed, so I can leave the Head setting alone. 🏍💨🏍💨

      Thanks for watching. Harley-Davidson had an Accessory Switch stock on my 2009 Road Glide to switch my LED Accent Lights. But not on my 2021. So, I first installed installed the switch kit to operate my LED Accent lights using Accessory Switch 2. They use less than 2 amps.
      But now I’m going to use the Accessory Switch 1 to operate my Heated Grips. The grips require you to use the setting switch on the end to turn on/off. This means the heat setting is changed every time. I’m going to use the Accessory Switch 1 to switch them on/off. This way when I find the perfect heat setting, I won’t need to change it.
      I’ll have a video on the installation of the grips. So subscribe to get notifications of new videos.

    what switch kit or harness did you install on the left side for your 'spotlights' you mentioned in the video? I have a 2018 CVO RG and installed Clearwaters but the switch I bought (might need a harness) will not power them on, even though I have power to the switch.

      I used the Factory HD lights on the Factory Fog Light Switch on the left side, not the Auxiliary Switch Kit on the right. If you don’t use the Factory Lights here, be sure to use a relay. The power from the Fog lights comes through the ECM that is low. If you draw too much, it will blow the ECM.
      If you use the dash switch kit, use Accessory Switch 2. After installing the switches, you will have the switches to use. The center switch uses the relay with 10 amps available.

    Good afternoon. Thanks for the videos.
    I don’t follow something. In another video for the accessory switch in the left side, I thought you already used the PA connector on the left side. That was used for the fan and the fog lights. Now you show that for the right-side acc switch, you went to the same plug on the left side?

    • @TheRoadGlideRider
      @TheRoadGlideRider  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it uses the same plug on the side for the Accessories and Fan. Originally the socket was empty. I just added the single wire into the plug that is used with the Coolflow Fan. The plug for the fan has a blank spot to insert the new wire.
      I hope this helps.

    On my passing lights there is a positive red wire to the positive post and a black negative to the ground post. Would I wire the red positive wire to the striped wire in the plug and the black wire to the ground black wire in the plug? The striped wire would give you power when the accessory switch is on, is that right?

      Accessory 2 wire, Light Blue/Yellow wire is limited to 2A. Any accessory connected to it is limited to no no more than 2A. If you want to use more, add a relay. The best way to be sure is using your volt meter, test it for voltage. This way you will know the switch and wiring.
      Thanks for watching.

    On acc# 2 you have a red, black and blue/yellow. Is the blue/yellow the lead to the switch? And could I wire passing lamps to this acc switch.

    • @TheRoadGlideRider
      @TheRoadGlideRider  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In the instructions, says the Light Blue/Yellow wire is limited to 2A. If any light exceeds 2A, you must use a relay. If the lights (LED lights usually don’t exceed 2A) used are under this, you should be OK. Accessory 2 switch is the one to the outside.
      The center Accessory Switch uses the relay included with the harness. It’s usually used for Heated Seat, or Clothing. I’m going to use it to power my Heated Hand Grips.
      Thanks for watching. 🏍💨🏍💨

    Do any of the two ACC switches work if you only use the plug and not connect that single wire to the battery?

    • @TheRoadGlideRider
      @TheRoadGlideRider  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching my video.
      From what I understand, you can’t get voltage without the harness. The wiring needs the power from the battery to provide voltage for the ACC2. It uses the relay to provide voltage through the harness. Power for the plug (ACC1) comes through the ECM. That is why it’s limited to less than 2amps. I wouldn’t advise wiring different than the instructions. You might damage the ECM. And those have a high cost to replace.

    Sorry for the stupid question: but if I installed the switch instead of the plug number 2, then where will I find the connector that controls this button? I took off both side covers and don't understand where to find them. Wanna connect heated grips or something. Thank you! 👍🏻

    • @TheRoadGlideRider
      @TheRoadGlideRider  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s never a stupid question to seek information. If you’re not going to install the complete accessory switch, but just want to have access for your heated grips (or other things), you need the Electrical Connection Update Kit (69201599A) from Harley-Davidson. The Heated Grip kit says it’s required to connect them to the Harley-Davidson Wiring Harness. It will enable you to connect but not have any way to turn on/off other than the Grip itself. Be sure to follow the wiring instructions to insure correct connections.
      I hope this helps. And thanks for watching my video.

      @@TheRoadGlideRider I forgot to specify: Avon heated grips have their own control unit, which requires separate power supply.

      @@TheRoadGlideRider I have an Ultra Limited 14. And I have already removed the broken heated grip, but the wiring of the electronic grip remains. On the right side of the fairing there is a power connector to which the old grips were connected. It seems to me there is no problem to connect the new Avon control unit there.
      ps But, I took your advice into account and will connect other devices to it.
