Back in the 80s, Weird Al was HUGE in geek circles and has always been. Seriously, it's hard to overstate how popular he was among the geek crowd. He is one of the very few artists who I will buy a new album of his without hearing a single song off it because I *know* it's going to be great... and that's been true since the 80s.

Hell yeah. in the late 70's or early 80's, I would listen to the Dr. Demento show on the radio every week and that's where I first heard Weird Al. Loved him from the first song I heard. The great thing about Dr. Demento was that he opened me up to a whole new world of funny radio, not just Wierd Al. Great acts like Kip Adotta, The Frantics, Joe the Love Potato, and so many others. I still have some cassette tapes I made from back then.

Yeah, I've been pretty obsessed with Weird Al since I was a kid (I've been a geek/nerd practically my whole life). I have mixed feelings about his popularity now. He deserves it, of course -- he should have been huge from the beginning. But now Weird Al is no longer a hidden treasure that geeks and nerds can appreciate and find camaraderie with.

The thing to keep in mind is while that Al is huge in the USA, that is pretty much the only place (and judging by his world tour locations also Canada). Sure, he has his fans in other countries as well, probably a few more in countries where English is either primary or a common second language (Canada, UK...). But people outside the US are far less likely to have heard of him, especially since his real boom (from my understanding) was the 80s and 90s.
Not implying that he's not doing extremely well still of course, but that's when he had his own show and movie and all that.

Fun bit of "Weird Al" trivia:
Weird Al is one of only _5_ artists to have 4 Billboard Top 40 hits across 4 decades (the others being Kenny G, Madonna, Michael Jackson, and U2). That's at least one top 40 hit in each of the '80s, '90s, '00s, and '10s. Although arguably, Kenny G and Michael Jackson snuck in on technicalities (their music being included in a modern track via sample).

    • @sabin97

He has been a huge star for 40 years, he is way more then a parody guy. though of course that is his format. However the two songs you picked do not showcase his talents. Kirk Cobain said, You know you made it when weird al does your song. So i give you 3 songs for you to watch off video. "Bob", as is bob dylan (watch the signs closely) "Word Crimes" attention on grammar. "White and nerdy" just for fun and range, just beating out "all about the Pentiums". Al is a class act and has done every major artist/bands including Queen.

no joke, Al is a genius. He has hundreds of songs on the internet. Try "Word Crimes" or see his parody of Bob Dylan's masterpiece "Subterranean Homesick Blues" Al named it "BOB" and every single line not only rhymes but is a palindrome..

I have often felt that Weird Al is one of the great artists of the modern era - not because I love his songs [though in general I do] but because he manages to copy so many styles of singing and also he matches so many music videos scene by scene but with the change to the new interpretation. He has done some amazing parodies of Michelle Jackson and so many others.

Coolio said no but the label said yes. There was someone who told All that coolio said yes, but later after it came out the artist said he never did. But All is nothing if not couteous. Legally he needs no permission just credit the writers of the original work, but he's always gone above and beyond. For Eat it and Fat Micheal worked with All to create the videos. Scene for scene and move for move. Micheal loved Al's work. That is class is what he demonstrates.

It was so fun to watch you enjoy first listens to someone I've listened to for forty years. Combine amazing musical talent from him (and his band) with total commitment to whatever part he is playing in any song. The direct parodies are what made him famous but his many "style parodies" or just plain original comedy songs are a treat as well.

Now that you've seen a couple of his songs, I would love to see you react to:
    Living With a Hernia
    Like A Surgeon
    Germs
    Hardware Store

Weird Al has an uncanny ability to perfectly imitate the cadence and sound of anyone he parodies. Everyone is telling you the various songs to listen to next. If you're interested check out the songs he's parodying first then Weird Al's version then realize he does that every time. He's even developed serious skill as a rapper.
As for my suggestion for next song, try his version of Classical Gas. You'll be amazed
