Louis Armstrong sings with a smile, literally and figuratively. Juxtaposed against the grittiness of his sound, it creates such a feeling of sincerity. He sounds like he's been through it all, but still chooses to sing with such brightness and joy that it absolutely pulls at your heartstrings, especially in this song.
I'd love to see you react to Sarah Vaughan. Really anything of hers, but I particularly like "Here's That Rainy Day".

I was blessed to see Louis Armstrong as a child before he passed away my family and myself were at a jazz festival in Chicago and Mr Armstrong was there performing I did not realize it was going to be one of his last performances since he was pretty sick he died later that year

I've never noticed before how he keeps singing like a half measure past each word. He just keeps pushing even tho his chords are shot. His grumble adds to the flavor of the song.
He's like some aged lion past his prime but still strong... a true king.

Another person who often intentionally befuddled her accompaniment was Carol Channing. Everyone knew the words, and the notes she was supposed to sing to her Broadway hits, and exactly when they were supposed to show up, but Carol said she liked to keep the audience guessing about the 'when' so they had something to listen for, and pay attention to. Nobody ever rushed Channing into singing anything at another tempo other than her own good time!

Jazz critics have said this about Louie: " You could have the worst day of your life, but go home and listen to his records, and suddenly your bad day goes away--It's like he's patting ya on the back and saying, "Don't worry, son--it'll be all right" He was so loved by everyone-Conservatives,liberals, hippies, and presidents--His joy when he performed was so infectuous.

There was a really good PBS radio documentary on him back I guess in the late 90s. One of the funny stories from that is that he was going to go to Europe on a tour. He had a tape recorder and he often taped his phone conversations apparently. So they had these to listen to. He was calling a guy and telling him that he needed some sheet music. And before the European tour he was telling him, no, I need a LOT of sheet music.
They finally realized that 'sheet music' was their code word for pot.
