I can't imagine how long it took to perfect this
Actually, I count only two edits, and if you look at the behind-the-scenes, there was not green screen. What you saw on-camera was really on-camera, and they really did shut down an entire freeway.
Damilola Odebo ya it was a lot of raw footage and it took them so many hours and takes. I just watched a video about it and there was so much detail put into it

Probably not that long. The choreography was insanely basic
+Louis Butson -- I agree with it being fairly basic, although I wouldn't call it "insanely" basic. That's getting on the hyperbolic side of things. It was still decently complicated enough, and some people were doing special stunts, that very few directors would actually try something like that, so on a technical level it's still impressive. The reason why you rarely ever see anything like this is because even though it doesn't take as long to perfect as a _Cirque du Soleil_ performance, it still takes time, and for a studio time is money. They like to rush over rehearsals, and reshoots are expensive, so directors normally don't have time to perfect a long take with a lot of independent elements going on at once.

Why would you start the movie with a smile? "Another Day of Sun" is literally one of the most depressing songs in the movie... it sounds happy but it's about the constant repetitive rejection of most actors in L.A.

@@notyouraveragegamergirl552 I disagree. If you smile at this song, you're listening to the melody but ignoring the lyrics. That's a full 50% of the song not reaching your brain. The song works because it's a juxtaposition of an upbeat melody and a depressing message. It's enjoyable, but sad too; it's bittersweet. Like most ABBA or Carpenters songs.
@@slashdisco I partly agree, but for anyone who's like me, I listen to music almost anytime I'm doing something else. So while I have listened to the lyrics and have understood the meaning behind them, it's not possible for me to focus on the meaning every single time I listen to it. And even when I do pay attention to those lyrics I can't help but find great enjoyment in the melody. One of my favourite songs is called Cold Cold Man, it's a song about someone trying to explain to their loved one that while they seem cold and distant, they truly do love them. It's a song that doesn't exactly have happy lyrics at points, but my god it sounds like one of the most upbeat songs I've ever heard. I'm not necessarily ignoring the lyrics, but I'm still enjoying it regardless.

This will stay my most favorite opening of any movie ever. LA LA LAND is a true artistic masterpiece.

I absolutely love this scene as an opener to the film. So often in movies, the background characters are just that, bland uninspired people standing to occupy screen space. This scene serves to show us that any person is just as much of a "main character" as Mia and Sebastian. They all have their own stories, and in terms of this world, are just as capable of breaking into song and dance. It also immediately places the viewer into the very outlandish 'la la land' of the movie, where everyone is happy and everything is perfect. Until of course, that illusion is broken minutes later and continues to be bent further and further throughout the movie before it is completely snapped

This scene inspired me to drop out of college and move to LA to become a dancer! After three months of failed auditions, I ran out of money and moved back to Ohio. Now I work as a cashier at a dollar store.

Him and the biker and skateboarder were last seen going towards the camera when it was scrolling down the left side of the barrier. Since it was all filmed in one shot, they couldn't just go back the way they came or it would be distracting to the dancers that took over after they left the scene. Their cars couldn't have been towards the ending point we saw them since people still needed to be there to dance on top of the cars, so they had to just kind of dance their way up front. The purple guy had to get over to the other side of the barrier so that every car can still have a person on it without the cars on the left side of the barrier lacking dancers. What you should be asking is where all of the people in the trailer went, since the only one we see at the end is the bass player

that final shot overlooking the dancers on all the cars will never fail to impress me. that moment is one of the best movie scenes ever recorded
what really gets me is that if you look closely there’s people on top of cars all the way down to the very end of the ramp. it’s very impressive.

My favorite thing about this is that it's a nod to all the "special skills" artists in LA. The flips and parkour are done by stunt people. The fan dancer and B-boy are specialty calls. The skateboard and bicycle are stunt units. The dancers (tap, hip hop, musical theatre) are their own unit. The band in the truck is sometimes a real group that a movie can hire together.
This scene is a cinematic master piece. Just everything, the choreography, the music, the cinematography, the concept, the actors. Just amazing.
This is a movie which can only be truly appreciated in a wide screen cinema and I'm glad I saw it in one
My only quibble is that the vocals are mixed too low, and that is a problem throughout the movie. The cinematography and choreography are just outstanding.
You think so? I found the choreography to just be so-so. The coordination of everything is impressive, but the choreography not so much. That’s a problem through the whole movie for me actually.

I find that most of the chain cinemas have inferior sound. Even here in Los Angeles there are only a few places I will see films at for that reason.
This one of the most satisfyingly perfect scenes I've ever seen. The music, the singing, the tone, the cinematography, good God the cinematography. I'll never get tired of this scene.

I came to this movie hating musicals, ended up being highly impressed, almost crying and wanting to listen to jazz more. If every musical was like this, I'd absolutely love that genre.

That first girl singing about how she left her first love in Santa Fe to pursue her dream and how maybe if she gets famous he’ll think about how he used to know her carries much more depth than I thought on first listen. But when you actually listen to what she’s saying. It’s inspiring yet heartbreaking at the same time.

The closest car in the 3rd column at the end had a guy in a red shirt get in. The person getting in is white. In the scrolling shot at the beginning it showed a black guy sitting inside.

As happy and joyous as this beginning was, when I tell you that ending destroyed me…I left the theatre in sobs. I went through the entirety of the human experience in that film. Totally unexpected and pretty remarkable.❤
The way she flicked the sunglasses into the car was so unbelievably satisfying as it was right on time with the song too
When you realize that the lead male and lead woman in this dance has the same outfit as Mia and Sebastian in “A Lovely Night.” And the fact that this song sums up the entire plot of the story. 🤯🤯🤯

This is a directorial masterpiece in every sense of the word. Not least of which because, unless I'm mistaken, there are no cuts throughout the whole scene. Bravo to Damien Chazelle and his cameraman, cinematographer, etc.
No cuts but there is a fade. So not entirely the Scorsese steadicam copacobana one shot but damn well close enough and just as impressive.
There are cuts hidden in the fast pans. But from the skateboard to the end is all one take.
3 cuts if I am not mistaken is what Mr. Chazelle said in one of his interviews.
It's actually three long shots. The cuts are hidden in the two whip pans. First cut is at 1:26. Second is at 3:13.
Look on the shadows of the cars. And mostly they do a cut because they need to change from camera on crane to handhold - like in 1:13
There should be an Academy award for best choreography once in a while...

@@beth9603 - the traffic doesn't actually get to that level of gridlock on a daily basis. You're at least moving slowly at even the worst times - not standing so still you can get out and have a dance number ;)
@@myleschykerda902 I only met this kind of grindlock traffic once on 105 FWY Eastbound.. that's because there was a guy threatening suicide on 110 freeway ramp.. the same stretch of road where this song was shot.

I was at my friends house when I watched this movie. I had a list of movies and we randomly picked and it happened to be La La Land. We both weren’t thrilled, but we were IMPRESSED when the movie ended. I genuinely didn’t think I would love this movie this much. I hated musicals (expetion of High school musical and other disney musicals lol) and this seriously changed my views on this genre

Some of what makes this scene brilliant is the way the camera is actively a part of the choreography. The camera moves in rhythm with the dancers who move in rhythm with the music. Its beautiful.
I agree. You can really notice this strongly at 3:21. You as the viewer are effectively there on the freeway ramp alongside everyone else.
I went into this movie reluctantly, i was dragged into it and im not the biggest musical fan so i was already expecting a waste, this intro, the song, the choreography, i was hooked and i can say i love this movie so much

This also acts as foreshadowing of a “perfect world”. People wouldn’t expect to be so upbeat during a traffic jam and yet it presented in such a manner, then, finally hitting the audience with the title card, it was really well done.

I'm not sure we collectively realize how incredible this intro is... one of the best (and most memorable) of all-time. An instant classic. It blows my mind that it's (nearly?) all one shot... and the timing of everything is perfect.

When i saw this opening in the theater with my girlfriend, i told her right after the end of it :"woa that was a really good movie ! We can go". This opening alone worth the ticket price !
This scene fits theme of the film almost perfectly - it starts off with different melodies in different cars, but as song goes on, all people are starting to dance in the same perfect tact and timing, just like main character. They're are complete opposite characters and almost enemies for each other, but as film goes on, they're getting along and fall in love. And in the end of the musical number, everyone gets back in their cars and blend, boring life continues. Just like in the end of the movie Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are breaking up and dividing again.(Sorry for my bad eng - my main language is russian :| )

The opening of lalaland is one of the reasons I love lalaland. All the music in lalaland is beautiful, especially when I listen to 'Another Day of Sun', I feel so happy. The music, scenery, choreography and camera movements in this scene are perfect.
in my opinion, the rest of the movie is nowhere near as good as this scene. fortunately for the movie, this scene is one of the best openings of any movie ever and the rest of the movie is pretty darn good.

Anyone else notice all the dents on the hood and roof’s of the cars? Just shows how many takes they had to do for this.
it was also 104 degrees that day in LA. The heat makes the metal of the cars easier to dent. If this were done in 60 degree weather or when its not smoldering hot on the cars, the dancing on the cars wouldn't have caused actual dents because the metal would be much stronger.

Well, I noticed that they didn't dance on the older cars. Quite a refreshing change from Hollyweird's usual disrespectful attitude.

The car hoods/roofs are purposely dented in before the first take. It makes it easier and safer for the dancers to perform.
Absolute perfection; easily one of the greatest movie scenes of all time. I wonder how funny it would have looked to motorists driving by and seeing a bunch of people dancing on top of all those cars lol.
I believe that this song in beginning of the movie itself affirmed the claim for Best Cinematography at Oscars.This song is a masterpiece that'll be learnt by the students for years to come.

Amazing how this scene was choreographed and put together. It really works. I see why teenagers have taken to it and do their own versions. It is truly teenage music - full of rhythm and energy. It took me time to get into it, but now I think it's adorable.
Really reminds me of the upbeat energy of Bye Bye Birdie.

besides the amazing singing and dancing, if you pay close attention to the cinematography, it was all done in one continuous shot. Amazing!!!👏👏👏👏. Hands down one of the best films in recent cinema. Just absolutely stunning 👏👏👏👏👏👏
3 shots actually and not a long take (look at 1:27 and 3:13, it's post-prod.), yet you're right it's a fabulous scene, from a logistic and esthetic point of view :)
And if you pay attention the sun position changes before and after 3:13, from the right (of the travel direction) and then from the left. Just nitpicking... :-) Still a masterpiece!
