Building A Prototype Of A Lamp Design - Mistakes n'all

  • I like the design of these lamps but not my execution. It's as important to show where you go wrong sometimes, as when all goes well. It wasn't a major fail. Just trying to shortcut the process of machining an internal radius or 16 ended up actually making more work for myself and, a level of finish I'd have nowhere near a paying customer.
    These are, thankfully, just prototypes though. Just something to allow me to gauge the overall aesthetic against the chairs and tables I designed/made and evaluate the processes needed to make them - ultimately letting me know if they're worthwhile.
    I think the design is but, the process will change some.
    Perhaps a word on the joinery used. Some might think a 3 way joint would be nice - and it would - however, they take a good deal more time and further complicated by the extra processing of the legs of the shade frame. A sort of pinned bridle mitre would also work, the "pin" being a tenon each end of the leg. Again though, it'd need to be blind on the outside for my taste (no visible bridle), meaning a lot more work/time.
    The dowelled mitre and dovetailed leg I went for makes for quick work by comparison, as well as making a sufficiently strong frame with a nice clean look.
    As mentioned in the video, the twist action of the lamps was just a bit of fun. Too impractical for bedside lamps really. Simple switch on the lamps to follow.
    The router corner template you see me use I've reviewed on this channel before but can be found on Banggood here: uk.banggood.com/Aluminum-Allo...
    The drill guide you see me used was gifted to me by Banggood for review. I'll have a review on it soon but if you want to take a look for yourself, you can find it on Banggood here: uk.banggood.com/custlink/K3md...

      Thank you! Its unusual but I like the reaction it gets from people who use them😁

    Love the lamp build with the white beech, Incredible job and the twisting on off, nice to see a review on the drill guide 👍

      Appreciated, thanks Lloyd. Hopefully won't have to wait too long for the drill guide review.👍

    Looking awesome! And that white beech isn’t something I knew was around, so that’s definitely on my shopping list to stand out on Meranti and Sapele.
    Legend 👍

      Thank you mate. Yeah, if you're in the UK or EU the white beech is a really nice and cost effective alternative to maple. Perfect for stark contrast to richer tone woods like meranti etc. 👍

    Love the clean look of these, beautiful. I've used a lot of beech but never white beech. Some of my beech slabs have a pinkish hue to them which I'm not overly fond of, although it tends to fade over time, presumably with UV rays, but I'm not sure. That twisting base is incredible! ♥️

      Thanks Kieth mate. Yeah, I'm honestly not fond of beech. I love it as a wood but it's just the colour it goes (yellow, pink, orange). White beech solves that for me though. Glad you like the twisting base. Totally impractical for a bedside lamp but a bit of fun. 😁

    Very clever switch mechanism, and the lamps are beautiful. I would be interested to see the effect of different colour plastics in one of the panels... without the stress of the 5 minute epoxy! Love the white beech.👏🏼🌟🙏🏼

      Thank you! I've done some Piet Mondrian inspired table tops before and did consider doing something like that with coloured panels. Had to stop myself though. The white panels, white beech and bare/stainless metal is to tie in with the other pieces I've made for the set/collection. I am curious now what coloured panels would look like😁

    They look good ,ideal night light may be . From a design view I would move the acrylic panels more to the outside face may be lightening the look of the frames.

      Thanks Nicholas. Really nice soft light from the 40w bulb through the acrylic. Night light, bedside light was the idea really though to be honest, the twist mech is a bit impractical for bedside. Bit of fun that really. I did experiment with the light with panels further forward. Wanted sat just behind the 6mm round on the outside. The frame gave a shadow inside doing this though. A 2 or 3mm opaque acrylic might resolve that.🤷‍♂️ All the best.

    Where did you get the wood from?

    • @BischBaschBosch
      @BischBaschBosch  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Local timber merchant. You'll often find your local yard/merchant only has steamed beech (steam turns it a pink/orange). You might have to order in white/unsteamed (natural) beech.👍

    is that a midsized Mafell plunge router? like a festool of 1010r or 1400 but lighter and stronger? what's the model no? how do we get one?

    • @BischBaschBosch
      @BischBaschBosch  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's a Mafell Lo50 router. Discontinued now. Was made for them by Festool back in the day. Basically a Mafell branded Festool OF900. Nearest thing to it today would be the Festool OF1010.👍
