    In this video I am making a cool modern/retro/mid-century modern floor lamp. I have wanted to design and build a floor lamp to accompany my Glenn Lounge Chair for a few years, and I felt like this was the perfect time to do it. This lamp is made from White Oak and also features some cool Brass details, and it was a lot of fun to make. So come along with me as I dive into making this lamp while exploring some interesting woodworking techniques.

    Modern and retro. So… combine the two words… the Metro Lamp.
    Forgot to say that for me, this is one of the nicest things you’ve ever made, Shaun. The fact that it didn’t swivel as nice as you wanted, doesn’t detract from how beautiful this piece of furniture is. A bloody nice job my good man 👌

    For the adjusting slot, I would consider putting something on the bottom side of base groove. A flat brass track with a delrin/uhmw polyethylene washer would keep the bolt from digging into the wood.

    Hi Shaun.
    Super floor lamp.
    I would have called it Modular.
    For a smoother slide from side to side. I would have opted for a brass disc with a vertical upright edge. Both top and bottom of the sliding disc identical perhaps H 4mm in total edge height. Tightly fitted inside a silicone casing. Parallel to the channel with ample space to add wax for a smooth action.
    Keep up the awesome designs. Love your work.
    Regards
    Bon 👣

    I also made a lamp; it is funny to find out you used the exact method as I did to hide the wiring. Mine doesn't swivel however, I put some felts under the foot and turn it as a whole. Main difference is the fact that my lamp is height adjustable, it has one vertical part and the horizontal part can be inclined in fixed positions. I had to make the foot quite heavy, so I ordered some lead pallets. Just let me know if you'd like some photos.

    There is only one thing, for my own use i would change: the thickness of the base plate. In my eyes it looks much too thin. Would make it double thick. Maybe more.

      I think it would also work better if the swivel was at the back and the pivot at the front. When you look at the weight hanging off the front the the lamp it would be putting pressure onto the front swivel action but if it was on the back it would almost be lifting it up for you?

    • @taylorwoods9727
      @taylorwoods9727 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shaunb66 Using nylon bushings around metal hardware is a good idea to reduce friction at those points of rotation. Also, felt can get "sticky" as it compresses, and it can hold moisture that attracts dust and make things harder on your finish. A thin piece of HDPE or acetyl/Delrin sheet would be smoother, equally unobtrusive, and pretty easy to retrofit. (I'm already thinking more complicated solutions as I type, but I'll stop here before I get annoying... too late.)

    • @shaunb66
      @shaunb66 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@elliotstokes6134 Yep, considered doing that too, but didn't like the look of the brass hardware being on the backside. Form over function on that one, for sure.

    I made a floor lamp last year in a mission style out of QS white oak and used a basic pendant lamp for the hardware and a color smart bulb to control with Alexa. I also wired a basic toggle switch just in case. For the shade I used an acrylic flower shade off Amazon. It looks like a hanging flower. The best part is you can change the color of the flower and brightness with a auditory command

    Personally, I think the top would look slightly better of the brasss bar extended out the back end, and or if it had a cap of lighter wood above it.

    very nice. i would suggest the lamp bit to be less roundy/curvy, something with angle. but anyway, it still looks awesome

    I'll keep watching to see what the finished result is, but my initial thought is that if you have the base swiveled all the way to one side, won't it be really unstable? This thing is beautiful so far. Well done. Cheers

      I was worried about that, too. I actually have the lamp in my house right now almost fully to one side, and it is totally fine! Thanks for watching!

    Funny what words do with imagination.
    I imagine a "counter sink" to be the negative of what a sink is; a raised part in the kitchen counter where the water just flushes off onto the counter instead of down the drain.
    OKAY ENOUGH OF THAT NONSENSE; REALLY AWESOME LAMP SHAUN!!!

    Love the lamp, maybe a washer made from UHMW or HDPE would help it adjust easier.

    30 YEARS AGO I had a lamp that looked a little like yours, we called IT the...PREYING MANTICE...:)

    Hy. I hope you can explain something for me. I an not a woodworker and not American. I live in Denmark, where we use the metric system for everything, including sizes of wood/timber (typically we use mm for thicknesses and bredth, and often cm for length). Despite this, we still call boards and posts by the older, more English terms "2 by 4" and "4 by 4" and so on.
    The ladt couple of years I have watched a lot of timber logging videos as well as woodworking videoes, and I noticed, thst sometimes you give wood/timber measurements in quarters (of inches, I presume), and sometimes in full inches....
    And here comes my questions; why or when/at what circumstances or in what crafts is it the norm to use quarters and when to use inches??? Are there rules about it, traditions about it ... or is it all random? Is the use if quarters Something new..??
    Please enlighten me. 👍🌞👍

    Love it! Why even add the word "Floor" at that point, you know? If you call it just "Lamp" it allows all the readers to impress upon the lamp their own feelings haha

      Very true, it can be whatever Lamp you want it to be.

      In this spirit, even "Lamp" is too categorizing. Perhaps someone might consider it a shadow caster! 🙃😲🙃

    You should attempt to do a wedge so that a second piece could float the light section higher or lower. I’ve had a 70s floor lamp made of metal although cool just wasn’t the most practice thing because of the lack of adjustability vertically. Just a suggestion not a criticism.
