Michael was breaking down BIG TIME barriers that prince nor RJ could touch. Prince was very intimidated by MJ and did not like him. MJ outperforming him infront of James Brown in 83 was what really set him off. Prince fell off the stage and embarrassed himself after Michael told James to let Prince come up and have some spotlight. He tried to run Michael and Latoya over in the parking lot after the concert, he never got over it. Michael was already a child star by the time RJ got fame everybody was amazed by him when he went solo in 79. Michael was historically the biggest threat to EVERY musician after Thriller and even though everyone hated it they accepted it. Prince was talented but he has a habit of feeling himself to the point of being rude to others. Michael was dangerously humble. RJ sensed competition in his genre from prince, but that attitude is what really pissed him off more.
Rick turned down a request to mentor Prince but was asked by the record Co to put him on his tour instead to break shyness out of him! The rest is history!

Michael was breaking down BIG TIME barriers that prince nor RJ could touch. Prince was very intimidated by MJ and did not like him. MJ outperforming him infront of James Brown in 83 was what really set him off. Prince fell off the stage and embarrassed himself after Michael told James to let Prince come up and have some spotlight. He tried to run Michael and Latoya over in the parking lot after the concert, he never got over it. Michael was already a child star by the time RJ got fame everybody was amazed by him when he went solo in 79. Michael was historically the biggest threat to EVERY musician after Thriller and even though everyone hated it they accepted it. Prince was talented but he has a habit of feeling himself to the point of being rude to others. Michael was dangerously humble. RJ sensed competition in his genre from prince, but that attitude is what really pissed him off more.

I really wish you could have been there in that new era & time of on stage performers (Prince was new on the scene & was one of the opening acts for Rick James).
Rick James helped mold Prince into that wild performer he became. Prince took Rick James performance to a whole other level (when Prince put that brass bed on stage & performed on that bed) & took our imagination to another level of how we thought about him (back then when Prince first came on the scene a lot of black people thought Prince was a sissy).
