I need 2 say this. Ive been watching this channel since day one. But as a black man i never thought i would ever see a story as intriguing or as profound 2 me personally as this. If you research the case his father was photographed after the murder. He has bruises all over his body which proved Marvin attacked him and he was on drugs too.

Common theme in the American legal system. I say "legal" because it's not a justice system. Violent crimes are routinely handed lighter sentences than non-violent or victimless crimes & the wealthy often get NO prison time because they can afford bail & great representation. (Google "Robert H. Richards IV" if you want to vomit). Just like our healthcare, freedom is for sale in this capitalist hellscape. It's on us to organize & demand better.
Marvin was amazing. His father dispised Marvin because he saw greatness in Marvin that he'd never amount to, and he hated that because of his own failures and insecurities
Usually the father wants the best for his children and wants them to achieve dreams they never did or at least have them aspire to be great. Sadly, it's not always this way.

Marvin Sr even questioned was Marvin Gaye his. Yes, Marvin Gaye doing drugs didn't help, but Sr despised Marvin Gaye long before that. Marvin Gaye's biggest mistake is moving back in with a father he didn't get along with.

I grew up with a mother that targeted me emotionally, mentally, financially and physically, rather than my siblings. It’s easy to understand when a parent abuses all their kids, but it’s so much harder to understand when they only abuse one. It just doesn’t make sense.

I feel this is quite wrong, to paint Marvin Gay Sr as a monster. I love this channel, has watched every episode since it started.
But my man was not a monster. Marvin Gay Jr had PCP and cocaine in his system. Marvin Gay Sr had injuries from being beat by his son (this is why they reduced sentence), meanwhile Marvin Gay Sr had a walnut size tumor in his brain.
This is what Sr said after the sentencing while crying:
"If I could bring him back, I would. I was afraid of him. I thought I was going to get hurt. I didn't know what was going to happen. I'm really sorry for everything that happened. I loved him. I wish he could step through this door right now. I'm paying the price now."
I dont think he meant to kill him, but Marvin Gay Jr was irrational and aggressive and had attacked his father.. and I think he just wanted to make his son scared to stop attacking him
@@vipr1142 Coming from a very similar household I am going to say that it's much more complexed and nuanced, the underbelly of such parents as Marvin Sr. So much more. Their family dynamic began in Marvin Jr's infancy. Generational traumas are labled 'Generational' for a very real reason.

After so many times of getting abuse, you are bound to fight back, especially if the person starts to threaten your life. So, it’s not your typical everyday abuse. Which it didn’t sound like it was that day. Or maybe Jr at that point had enough of the abuse. You know like how women in domestic violent relationships finally hurt and/or kill their partner after prolong abuse. Like that.
Abuse is not how it’s portrayed in the movies. Where the victim NEVER fights back or doesn’t have problems of their own. Sometimes they do fight back, because they had enough and are defending themselves. And sometimes they do have problems, which Jr did.
Also, adding that Jr had drugs in his system is victimizing the victim. He is the one who got shot and killed. Who cares if he had drugs in his system. You don’t shoot someone because of that. Call the police if you feel threatened. Though, I really doubt Sr was the one that was feeling threatened. If he was feeling threatened, it was his ego that was threatened.
By the way, I never said Sr was a monster. But, he definitely was not innocent. He did a lot of wrong to his son and whole family. You don’t abuse and kill, especially your own child.
Finally someone called him out for his shit!
In the Black Community, we don't acknowledge this case enough. We just talk about it whenever mentioning Marvin and go about life but Marvin was our brother.
An absolute icon who helped put Motown on the map. His father was a huge monster who was jealous of his son's talent.

As a child who was also a subject of fathers irrational but very real hatred, I wish I could hug Marvin and tell him that he was worth it. Worth being alive, worth living, trying, failing. This story breaks my heart.

It’s not the voyeurism or the orgies that makes Gaye’s legacy an uncomfortable one - we’re not here to kink-shame. It’s the multiple reports of abuse and the implication that he didn’t always fully grasp consent; the idea that he used violence to get his way, and the coercive behaviour he even outlines in his own lyrics. In hit single I Heard It Through The Grapevine, he sings, “I know that a man ain't supposed to cry/ But these tears I can't hold inside/ Losin' you would end my life you see/ Cause you mean that much to me”. Woman of the World half-heartedly celebrates women’s liberation, but slips into the singer lamenting losing “my girl” as a result. It seems the irony was lost on him that women being free from misogyny directly correlated to their desire to be free from him, too.
It is so sad that Marvin’s siblings were so manipulated and brainwashed that they blamed him for his father killing him😢
i don’t think they “blame” him, because it makes sense. there’s a thing called “suicide by cop” where everyone knows if you threaten to shoot at police or run at them, they’ll shoot you first. the cops are the ones who did the killing but the person also intentionally “poked the bear” by pissing off a dangerous person.
Marvin was depressed & had failed an attempt a few days before. He had never put his hands on his father until that day & likely knew the reaction that would have. I don’t think it was premeditated, but I do think he didn’t care what happened to him.

I grew up on Motown and had a love for Marvin Gaye's music from the jump. I knew he was killed by his father but I didn't know the story. What a terrible thing, all of it. The abuse, the scars on Marvin's being, the ego and hatred of his father, all of it. Thank you for such a moving and personal story.

When you look at most artists today, even actors, there was a level of abuse in their childhood. Now whether the abuse came from their households or Hollywood, is the question.
The relationship between Marvin Jr and his mother was so touching. Even when Jr was struggling himself, he kept his promise to his mother that he would take care of her. I just wish Alberta had divorced her husband sooner, so then she and her son could have lived together in peace away from the monster.

What a heartbreaking story. Marvin Gaye is one of the greatest singers and songwriters who ever lived. Put on “What’s Going On” or “I Want You,” and if you just sit there and listen, the entire album will just blow you away. Not to mention the tremendous duets he did with Tammi Terrell and Diana Ross. He really is a legend. Thank you for making this video.
Marvin Jr had a horrific upbringing. His Father sounds like a Phychopath. Yet, Marvin Jr has undeniable talent. Sadly he was not able to get help for his childhood trauma in time and actually start enjoying his Life and Success. I respect the Love he had for his Mother.

I find the practice of naming kids after the parents to be conceited and a little narcissistic, but this father clearly went beyond just plain narcissism where children are seen as extensions of themselves, and became extremely jealous of his own son. He was jealous of his talent and success, smth that Marvin Sr. probably felt entitled to, and murdered his son in a jealous rage. He's like the Evil Queen from Snow White; an irl fairy tale villain.

Marvin was murdered about a block from where I lived in Los Angeles and I can still remember the horror and heartbreak I felt that day… Marvin’s father killed him because he was insanely jealous of his success. I was born in 1984. I have enjoyed Marvin Gaye throughout my childhood and still do. I never knew of his horrible situation and life he endured. Great narration and story. I learned a bunch.
This story always turns my stomach a stpry of a cruel insecure selfish man who lashed out at everyone close to him to make himself feel tall and important until one day he went out of his way and killed someone. And not just anyone but his own son and namesake whom he tormented nearly all his life. I went to grade school with a beautiful, very meek and nervous girl. She was Pentecostal and now I understand her all these years later. I hope she is well.
This is not Pentecostalism, Pentecostals celebrate Christmas and Easter and go to church on Sundays. I think they ( the Gaye’s) may have been seven day adventists or some other sect. 🤔

I don’t know about that. I knew a guy in high school who tried to get me to join his Pentecostal group. He didn’t do holidays. Milton was a black guy but recruited white girls, and actually did get a few of them to wear long dresses, refuse to cut their hair, and follow him around. He was a nice guy, wore a suit to school, but his rules were not for me so I didn’t become one of ‘Milton’s girls”. I’ve never been prone to joining religions anyway.

My father was also the scapegoat of his family of origin. My grandfather targeted my father, beating him brutally, but wouldn’t lay a finger on the girls or the younger boys. I watched my father remain a loyal son (Stockholm I imagine) and his father always had an emotional hold on him. Everyone celebrates my grandfather on his birthday and posts pictures to remember him, and I used to, too, but now I ignore the day and go on about my business. He also took my father out to “work” while he cheated on my grandmother, and then made my dad lie about it. He was a cold, evil man, and I do not forgive him for what he did to my father or the rest of his family.
This is the samething my mother went through as a child my grandfather hated her for some reason he physically,emotionally and sexually abused her but only her out of 8 kids he never did anything to my uncle's or aunts and for some crazy reason she still treated and respected him like a father it's like he had some type of control over her as a kid I didn't know this but from the moment I found out I never looked at him the same again and actually hated the man even when he died my mom still acted like he was the best father ever smh

Thank you for your insightful and moving episode about Marvin Gaye. I was living in L.A. when he was murdered by his father and I will never forget it. I remember a local DJ saying to drive around with your lights on in tribute to Marvin, which I did. Marvin Gaye endured such horrific treatment by his father, yet he was able to share his talents with the world which will live on forever.

Well done, as always. I remember this being all over the news despite only being about 8 years old at the time. Shortly after, Diana Ross released a song called Missing You. In September 2021, I lost my wife to metastatic breast cancer and found myself obsessively listening to that song. Before Pam died, I literally had no idea that the song Missing You was written by Lionel Richie, or that the events of this video inspired it. Excellent work as usual!
I am SO happy you have included him in your monsters list. I learned pretty early on why I connected with Marvin before i could even speak. That abuse is just so clear to those of us who experienced it. Thank goodness for Marvin Jr. He helped save my life.

I was born in Detroit and grew up in the 60's. The Motown Sound was HUGE and I remember Marvin Gaye was a favorite of mine.
I also remember being completely shocked and mystified at the tragic events of his death at the hands of his own father. I never did know the whole story other than what was in the news at the time. I was today years old when I learned the whole story. Thank you Jiles.

I got a chance to see tha house where it all happened when I used to live in tha vicinity of that West Adams district of Los Angeles.

This hits home for me. My best friend was murdered last year. Some kid thought he was jousting him with words and wanted to fight him. My buddy never ever fought in his life. The kid attacked him, and then pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest. In front of his 3 year old kid. The guy ended up fleeing the scene, full of blood and it got on his kid. Police performed a high risk takedown and arrested 3 people. My friend laid there, dying and they could have helped him. Or atleast tried. The knife ended up going directly in the middle of his heart. He was like a brother to me. My family was horrified.
3 days ago there was sentencing for the guy who did this. He pled guilty to manslaughter in December which was horrifying for everyone. He ended up getting sentenced to 8 years, with credits served, 6 and a half years. During her speech, the judge talked more about how he has a lot of life to live, and with his son being young, he needs his father than what he did to forever change the lives of Zachary's family and friends. She cared about his needs more than the justice his family deserves. It is disgusting with the justice system we have here in Canada. I still cry everyday and this sentencing made it worse. My best friend was 27, and the guy will be out and will still be younger than my buddy when he was murdered.

I always wanted to know more about this story even though I was just a kid when he died. People were so sad but there was never an explanation as to what happened to his father. I could never figure this out. Some people had opinions that the father was trying to defend himself from Marvin. I couldn’t believe them and I didn’t. His story was so heartbreaking Thank you so much for covering. ❤
What's Going On is a bittersweet, human album which observes pain and societal ills while expressing tenderness and sensitivity. On your channel we see a lot of people who take their childhood pain and trauma and respond with acts of violence toward others. Knowing all this helps me understand Marvin a little better, props to him for taking his pain and making beautiful art with it from a perspective most people are fortunate enough they will never have.

This is so sad for Marvin. An abusive Narcissist for a father & a submissive woman who allowed this bad behavior. She should have already known what a horrible man Marvin Sr was when she chose to give up her own son for him. The both of them were awful parents.
Very well researched and narrated, what a shame that this wonderful singer and songwriter had an awful childhood at the hands of his own father and then to die by the same hand.

This case has made me almost break down crying at several moments. I am a die hard fan of Marvin Gaye's music and knowing the way he died and what he had to endure during his whole life at the hands of the monster of a father he had, just tears me apart. He got only 6 years of suspended sentence after killing his son, who he tortured throughout his whole life and actively made sure he was dead, not only was it the fatal shot to his chest but he had to make sure he was completely anahilated. He is sorry? Sorry he got caught and his brothers saying it was an act of suicide? This man was so distraught and broken from years of abuse that I'm surprised he made it that far without attempting more than once, to end his own life. He did not deserve such an end...rip Marvin. Thank you so much for this post, as always, top notch content, hard to find on TH-cam these days🎉

Absolutely heartbreaking when I hear the stories of others that were victims of abuse by a parent. It’s a very traumatic abuse because as a child, you are so confused why your parent is hurting you. Your parents are supposed to be the person/people you can always count on for support and love.
It dosen't always work out like that. I KNOW BECAUSE I LIVED IT.
It becomes even more confusing as an adult I think. Especially when you have kids, and wouldn’t ever treat your kids like you were, because now you start to really see how wrong it was.

I grew up with his music. I knew every word to every song. I'm kind of glad I didn't know the anguish behind the man. It would have made me sad to hear his music, knowing how horrible the child inside still hurt. I never heard the entire story all these years. Thank you for this.

I was listening to Marvin’s music a couple nights ago while studying and there was footage of him smiling and celebrating. Looking at him I thought, “Wow, his own father killed him. He’s living every child’s fantasy and his father took it all way. I wonder why.” Thanks for the video.

Thank you for covering this. This kind of monster is far more common than what we usually see in the headlines. However, they're often overlooked and permitted to continue their behavior, leading to irreparable damage society suffers as whole through the damage it has on the individuals who endure the abuse and the cycle of violence it often perpetuates.
We need to do far more to intervene and educate people. It IS our business when we see it happen amd it DOES need to be stopped, as well the victims treated for the effects and assisted to escape.

When Mavin Gaye died, it was the 1st time I ever saw a grown man cry. That man was my Uncle Bill (RIP). He was so upset about his death because he was one of his favorites. It scared me even though I was 14 when he died. Such a shame 😢

Poor Marvin Jr, I never knew what happened to him. My mom always said when I was young that it was a tragedy, and she grew up during Reagan era so I kind of assumed he had gotten sick....we loved his music....thank you for covering this legend singer, homophobia is always horrible I cant imagine dealing with family abuse and racism on top of that
I just assumed he was sick as well. I called my Mom immediately after watching this. Marvin Jr. story is literally heartbreaking. I pray he's finally at peace.

I was 12 when Marvin Gaye was killed and I remember my parents being horrified and sad, but this is way more info than I ever knew ALSOOOOO I love seeing your face! Voice only videos feel less personal me, like a regular documentary. Nothing wrong with documentaries, but (speaking just for myself) I'm on TH-cam to see real people telling real stories, and seeing your face helps me connect with the voice and the story better
