the hinge of the clamp seems more pointy than it needs to be, perfect for those knee strikes. Shimano got a deal with kneecap surgeons. Conspiracy!

I used the new levers for my Shigura build and the added modulation works really nice with the Magura MT 5. Awesome combo. I agree with you 100% when it comes to bleeding them. The bleeding bucket is an amazing invention.

@@LoveMTB there is the harm, that there is no clear indication that it's not a normal video, you click on it and see that it's going to be released in 24h, it's just annoying, at least it's not pinned to the top of the page anymore like it used to. The thing is that this feature is essentially pointless for videos that don't have to be released at an exact time for some reason, and even then it works best if it's just 2-3h tops, otherwise the "premiere" is forgotten anyway, so it doesn't bring anything to the table.

6:30 Excellent bit of information here. I wanted to replace my M675 caliper today as one piston gets stuck all the time and can't be mobilized for long. So I bought an M7100 caliper only to find out that the old screw holding down the banjo is way too long for the new caliper.
Wondered if that extra screw included with the caliper was actually intended for the banjo as there are no o-rings and the hole in the side doesn't fully go through the screw, but it's got to be the right one.
NB: Shimano really should bother mentioning details like this in the documentation, which they didn't - the screw even looks different in the retailers' manual...

I don't know if it has already been said, but with the new XT brakes 8100/8120 it is not necessary to unscrew the screw plug and the olive. It is enough to put the sleeve in the pipe and then simply remove the yellow plug from the screw and insert the pipe and screw it tight. That's it.

Very interesting. From the boxes I see that new one 8100 series calipers use the same levers with 8120. From that point of view I thinks it is possible if I want to upgrade only the 4 piston calipers with old XT levers if the hose is the same..

  • @mtbboy1993

no I don'tr plan on new brakes from shimano I have had so much bad luck with Shimano brakes that I refuse to do it. I guess I would need a pallet of shimano brakes to be sure to not run out, cus at the rate it's been going that would be needed, but that would be ridiculous, of course I would not do that, but having brakes leak, and swap brakes and they leak too, and then swap again and they leak, I can't do it.
I doubt that a which has put a spell on all shimano brakes I had.
they need to get proper quality control, inspect and test every single brake.
I seem to have gotten a bad batch.

6:33 I think that since the only difference is having the hose coming out at a non stupid side like before, I'd rather go to a different make than just change to a newer model, eg. Magura has much nicer calipers than Shimano and an additional advantage is not having the issue with changing bite point (which, according to a reliable source, comes from the ceramic pistons not being quite perfect, confirmed by changing my annoying XT calipers to a lower, Deore model, the issue disappeared)

Maybe I missed something in the video since I am not English native but this particular question does not seem to be answered there. If you could provide once again some details... Thank you.

Hi, wondering what's on the inside of the free stroke screw on Shimano XT BL-M8100 brake lever.
How far can you unscrew it before it pops out (as I`ve been told it will). Am installing one, FS screw
is out about 1/8" out and still not much free stroke.

@@LoveMTB Thx. Am replacing Shimano MT501 lever (no free stroke adjust) with the XT M8100.
The XT had no oil in it, I just attached it to existing hose and did careful bleed, having set reach all

the new clamp has a much better design, it gives more clearance, for stifter remote, I use Archer D1Xtrail, but with a clamp like this it would not be a problem, but I have TRP Spyke on my bike, which also gives great clearance, but it's a different design.

what do you recommend for new xt cassette 10-45 or 10-51?

    • @sebastianjost
      @sebastianjost 4 ปีที่แล้ว

There should be tools online where you can compare your current gearing ratios to the new ones.
And depending of your needs you can estimate what suits your riding style and location the best.
If you don't have any steep sections near you, then the small gears are quite pointless anyways but if you do, 10-51 can be helpful.
It also depends on your front chainring(s) of course.

    • @c.martin6326
      @c.martin6326 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I ride a cannondale scalpel in upstate NY, pretty hilly, no climbs over 300-400ft. Average ride will be 120ft elevation gain per mile. I was looking at the 10-45 for closer steps but based on the gear ratios I wasn’t certain that it would provide a huge difference to give up the extra range of the 10-51. 34x10 provides sufficient top end speed but I was debating whether or not 34x45 would be sufficient for climbing. The XT does not offer the short derailleur that the XTR does so I wouldn’t be gaining any ground clearance

In theory yes however the tightening bolt could dig into the handlebar as the nut is pretty shallow vs the Shimano. So try it at the risk of damaging your handlebar, it will fit

Hi, thank you for reviewing this set. I've got few questions for you. Front and rear caliper seem to be exactly the same, can you confirm by the reference part? Willing to upgrade my hardtail with a four piston caliper at the front only (already 180mm), is the brake pump the same for either 2 and 4 piston caliper? Do you suggest this upgrade or isn't worth?
I'm also upgrading to 12 speed transmission and wondering if a clamp shifter is better in order to have more adjustment freedom (otherwise I have to change brake pump at the same time. I ride right front brake). Thanks for your advice

@@LoveMTB I must be honest, I found your video by chance, then subscribed and watched pretty much all your videos. Very detailed and clearly described.
So, I don't bother about I spec EV and stay on the clamp, maybe I was fascinated by the cleaner whole system, same for the dropper lever. I'm good with my M8000 brake set it feels a bit too flexible under hard braking. If there is a good reason to upgrade is the lever stiffness and the banjo at the inner side. Maybe going to 4 piston at the front only since I'm 1,85 and 85kg. Thank you again

Since nothing changed inside the lever apart from slightly different curve of the servo-wave plates, caliper upgrade is a nice option. Went myself from XT 2pot to SLX 4pot caliper for the front, works great with deore 6000 lever + XT lever blades. I like the design of new calipers a lot it seems like not much but normal banjo and bleed port locations make life a bit easier. I wish shimano would do something about the levers.

@@LoveMTB There are two things I've noticed, totally subjective and unscientific.
      And it might sound crazy.
      1. It feels like 4 pot has more modulation despite delivering a bit more peak power (comparing finned metal pads).
      2. The pads itself. I've been on metal pads since I got onto shimano brakes back in 2014. I recall trying finned resin and metal pads, didn't like the resin ones and stayed on metal. Since the 4 pot caliper I ordered came with resin pads I ordered an extra pair of metal pads. Installed the caliper, bedded in metal pads, works great... and after a month or so decided to try resin pads just for the sake of experiment. And I was quite surprised with the result. I expected them to feel a bit better while transferring a lot less power to the rotor as it was with XT 2 pot back in the day. Well, I was very wrong about the power. They transfer power to the rotor quite good while feeling a lot nicer. Not as grabby as the metal pads, but I don't think I'll need that extra "grabbiness" of metal pads with 4 pot caliper, at least for local spots. So for now metal pads are waiting for a bikepark tests on the shelf.

@@LoveMTB Well, I wanted a bit more power on the front and I got it. As for the price, got the caliper for 45 eur (around 50 bucks) - pretty decent and cost conscious (or I'd like to think so) ugrade.

I’m all Shimano. Xt 8000 on the Pivot and xt 8120 on the Santa Cruz Hightower LT. I didn’t know Shimano changed the modulation with the new ones. I really never felt the difference. Only thing I don’t like is the inconsistency of brake engagement. Sometimes it grabs high, sometimes low. Even after bleeding the brakes. You experience that? I notice it more on the rear brakes.
