  • Hello everyone, in this video I will tell the full story of the game Ogre Battle The March of the Black Queen from de SNES/PSX.
    0:00 Ogre Battle The March of the Black Queen Comercial
    1:32 The Ogre Battle
    7:11 The Unification
    10:40 The Great War
    22:17 The March of the Black Queen
    48:37 Epilogue
    The Ogre Battle saga is extremely dense and confusing for those who don't have a basic background, and even those who finish the game end up with some doubts.
    So this video is for you who want to understand the full story, the main plot, the characters, in a simple and extremely didactic way.
    Hope you like the video! If you like this saga like me, I invite you to subscribe to the channel, I make videos dedicated only to this saga that I bet you will like it too.

      Definitely the LUCT (PSP), the PS1 is ok too. Ogre Battle MotBQ (SNES), Tactics Ogre: KoL (GBA), and the Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber are all really good. Remakes are all welcome.

      @@WarrenReport truly indeed. SE better resurrect the great IPs they own instead of losing time and money with Avenger games as microtransaction platforms 🤣
      It would be wonderful if they could even join some of them into their own universe, like ActRaiser being part of the Angel vs Demon Ogre Battle wars the lore was based on.
      I love Act Raiser, specially 2. Dark Fantasy decades ahead of Demon Souls.

      @WarrenReport  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly, we try to improvise with what we find along the way, I hope you didn't find it horrible hehehe 😁
      A sprite comic? This looks amazing, I think you should do it. The more original ogre battle content out there, the better.

    • @nangbaby
      @nangbaby ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@WarrenReport Thanks. As long as I live there's a possibility I might pick it back up. I'm almost certain to reboot it, though, instead of continuing.
      First and foremost, this had to be a nightmare to put together. While all of the games of the series have branching paths, putting together a unified timeline is hard, especially with the storyline-favorable order at odds with the intended level order (like the doing Kalbian peninsula after Shangril, even though the latter has a lot stronger enemies).
      I think it's funny you gave Usar and Sirius more backstories than the game did, since I don't think they ever said what Usar was doing in Sharom/Charlom region other than to be the mook of the week, and Sirius was basically the mystery of Wolf Lake (all we know is the Empire put him in charge there, although I also headcanon the infected warrior shipped off to a corner to slake his bloodlust). Going after Deneb before Kapella is an inspired choice, and I love how the franchise's timeline states she survives when not only is she not in the World ending, but it's very hard to get her and a World ending because you have to lower your reputation and all the other characters need a high reputation.
      I have a few other observations:
      -You're using the new names. No "Gilbert" or "Rodisti" or "Warren Moon."
      -Neat how you repurposed that Fellana sprite for Innocent Endora.
      -You didn't even show Ares, the blond Ravenman merc who was after Rauny. No big loss as he's a very generic and forgettable character, but I was surprised not to even see his picture.
      -You skipped over Lyon, but again, he's a non-factor.
      -You skipped over greedy Monk Randals, and while he wasn't important, his stage was funny in how everyone complained how he demanded taxes.
      -Skipping the Alpha Twins....I mean Gemini Twins...is a little bigger. Technically they aren't storyline important, but Fort Allamoot is because as the map shows, it's a chokepoint and you HAVE to beat that stage to proceed with the game. Having to face the Gemini Twins would seriously delay an army marching west and north, especially since rescuing Tristan's mother, as you mentioned, would be a storyline important plot point.
      -That said, amazing how you fit Dragon's Haven into the story when it can't be accessed in the normal game.
      I'm not hating on you. This video is great and I am aware some things have to be glossed over to create a coherent narrative. I just love this game, warts and all, to the point where I made fan sequels in my head.

    • @WarrenReport
      @WarrenReport  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nangbaby Wow, I didn't know I was talking to a super expert in this game! Fantastic!
      -There isn't exactly a correct path since the game allows you to choose the stages, so I made the order thinking both about accessing all the stages and making sense of following the facts. I had to make some creative excuses to justify some points but like you said, we create the story in our head and follow it.
      If memory serves, *Usar* speaks of Xenobia's soldiers when we confront him. Sirius is commented on by the citizens when we are releasing the cities in his stage. I decided to show the two in more detail because they are the first official enemies of the game and also because they play an important role in showing how Eldora had evil attitudes.
      -Deneb couldn't be left out, we love the little witch here.
      -I'm using the new names because that's what the producers said most recently with the psp remake. The inspiration for the names was in the Byzantine empire, so to adapt how the pronunciation would be they changed many names like Zenobia to Xenobia, makes my work easier for the next videos (mainly LUCT).
      -this game has very few character portraits to tell the story I wanted, so I left the best ones for key characters in the story and the secondary ones just a mention, as was the case with Ares. Lyon is secondary in this game, so he became Dalkas in 8:20, the same as Randals who became Roshian in 8:15. The twins I thought a lot about including them because of the importance of the setting as you pointed out but as there were already a lot of people there I left them out. But I haven't forgotten them, they became the rulers of Ofays and Horai in 10:04.
      -Dragon's Haven needed to be mentioned because of Albaleo, as this is where he will get his draconic spells that are unique to him in the next game. Very important plot here.
      Your love for this game is inspiring, I didn't know there was someone so detailed and with so much knowledge about it. I'm sure the stories you create about them will be amazing, when you do let me know so I can read them and share them here!

    • @nangbaby
      @nangbaby ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@WarrenReport Thank you. I'd like to be clear, I'm a know-it-all, not an expert. I'm just part of the really old fandom, like that of Brian Sulpher, Eric Wackerfuss, Black Mantle, a community of people who are legitimate experts. I forget things all the time (especially precise recruitment guidelines), and I'm much more familiar with the SNES version than the PSX version. the latter which had those nice expanded intro texts for each of the stages and did provide additional plot details the towns in the stages did not.
      Google won't let me link to my dead work, which is probably for the best, as it is precisely non-canon for the basic reason that I assumed a female Opinion Leader than a male one, meaning that when Ogre Battle 64 was released, everything was jossed. Then again, since my fanfic centered on a group of generic soldiers in the army, it was Lower Decks the series before the series (although I WAS inspired by the original TNG "Lower Decks" episode...yeah, I'm old).
      But you're supposed to yell at me and tell me how awful, ridiculous, and annoying I am!

      The video maker did his best. If you really want to follow the Ogre Battle story, the best way is to play the game...the story is extremely text heavy and episodic/procedural which is why it doesn't translate all that well to a video. Every stage is like an hour long episode of Hercules or Xena...
      ...or maybe I should do a stage by stage story breakdown/analysis video...but that means people have to hear my awful voice...never mind that.

    • @nangbaby
      @nangbaby ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zenobia's clearly the intended point where the game gets harder in a bit of storyline and gameplay synchronization.
      Prior to this, you were putting out local fires in your advance towards Zenobia, and the natures of the bosses, the armies, and the stages all combine to give you a Saturday morning anime vibe, albeit with more bloodshed. I mean when your enemy is a one-dimensional necromancer and you're not only given white magic weapons which OHKO the dead, but your first upgradable female class can one-shot a GROUP of them, it's clear you're The Good Guys. It's also to get you used to the mechanics of the game. Although there are choices you can make along the way, it's pretty obvious you shouldn't trust the shady guy who wants you to meet the "boss" at night. And the game pushes you towards punishing the enemy by making units with Wizards on the front line.
      Then comes Aster Protoflorian...I mean Kaus Debonair and the Zenobia stage itself, which is not only big and has secrets, but is kind of tough to advance. It's basically the point where the game is not only asking if you've paid attention, but testing you to see if you can play it, because from here on out, the stages are going to be big, the enemies tougher, and story not about being some shonen-anime style army leader beating evil monsters, but about people fighting people. There are still plenty of evil monsters to fight, of course, and unlike later entries of the Ogre franchise the moral choices are still on the easy side (if a demon asks you to give him a holy sword in exchange for his freedom, the correct answer is no unless you WANT to be evil). That said, the story evolves as the game gets harder, just like a well-made game should.

    Your editing is getting a lot better, with some pretty gnarly visual effects, but the edited cuts really slice into your dialogue and it sounds unnatural. Speaking of sounds, your voice is relaxing and concise, but you sound bored as hell. It sounds like you lose enthusiasm pretty quickly. And it showed a little, too; the color coded territories, while one of my favorite touches in this video, died out almost as soon as you did it.

    Hello.
    Thank you for this video first of all.
    Before watching it, I would like to ask if it spoils the upcoming Remake of Tactics Ogre Reborn in any way.
    I want to go into Reborn as blind as possible, but I want to know all the facts from the original game (please don't point to me only the specific things that matter for the sequel because I like getting surprised by people showing up, events etc, if I know them from before I will just be expecting them the whole time).
    Basically, in this video, will I be spoiled for the sequel in ANY way?

    • @WarrenReport
      @WarrenReport  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well... what I can tell you is that some of Reborn's important characters originate from this game, but the story is totally independent. This game takes place 4 years before Reborn, I don't think it interferes with the experience at all, in my opinion. But if you want to play totally blind, I think you should do it.

  • @BigSlimyBlob
    @BigSlimyBlob ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hmm... I wonder how much of this is retcon and how much is "fixes" to the flawed translation in MotBQ. I know some of the later games have butchered translations as well, especially with names, like wherever "Xytegenia" (instead of the original and correct Zeteginea) came from, so it can be difficult to figure out what's right.
    Someone in the original game states that the Black Diamond was created when the other Wizards sealed Dulude's power inside a gem, so ironically, he didn't make it, they did.
    It's funny to think that the Five Heroes weren't that fancy when they got started on reunification. Gran Zenobia was merely prince Roshian's aide, looks like he was just some random guy before they became heroes and he ended up ruling Zenobia.
    The one thing I'm particularly curious about... in MotBQ, Endora does state that the reason she conquered the continent was to form an entity strong enough to face an invasion from Lodis. But I have never heard the bit about her asking the other four kingdoms for help against Lodis and the four kingdoms invading the Highlands instead. Where is that from? It changes the story completely. If it's true it means that the other leaders, like Gran, were evil (not to mention incredibly stupid) and absolutely deserved to be executed.

    • @WarrenReport
      @WarrenReport  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello friend, how are you? Thanks for the comment!
      The name change happened in the remake for PSP to bring the pronunciation closer to the real intention of the developers. The inspiration is in the Byzantine Empire, and apparently the pronunciation should contain the hissing sound of "sh", so they switched Zenobia to Xenobia, for example, to achieve this.
      According to my research sources, Duruda forged the black diamond to try to recover his powers that he had already sealed inside the other stones. He came into contact with the power of the abyss, so the diamond would be a relic capable of breaking the sealing of the chaos gates. He was eventually imprisoned within it by the other sages and legendary knights afterwards, before using the stone. As each zodiac stone represents a sign, the black diamond would be serpentarius and would mean betrayal.
      In the period of the 5 heroes there were thousands of kingdoms, the 5 were those that managed to effectively unify the rest. How did they do it, diplomatically or by force? We need to wait for a game to tell this story.
      Much of the backstory is told by NPCs and item descriptions. I don't think they were evil, ogre battle has always been about political warfare and domination...if any side shows weakness, it will be attacked. It is the reality of war, unfortunately.

    • @BigSlimyBlob
      @BigSlimyBlob ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WarrenReport Ah, that's a very interesting piece of information on the name changes... they simply realized they didn't do it like they initially intended. I guess you could see it as a fix rather than a retcon. I wonder about the other name changes, though... like changing Warren Moon to Warren Omon. Does Omon sound more Byzantine? Maybe they hired an expert and the expert made some strange suggestions.
      Much more detailed explanation that I got in the game for Dulude, too. And I'm OK with the game being "wrong" on how it happened, since every bit of information you get is basically just someone in a town telling you their interpretation of an old story that they learned, it's virtually certain to not be accurate.
      Given the nature of the game, and Ogre Battle games in general, it looks like the Five Heroes would have united the continent by force, which would have been much easier given that it was just a bunch of small warring kingdoms ready to be tipped over. Maybe it's why it only took them ten years to unite the whole continent. And that's OK too, sometimes people just won't stop fighting until you kill them.
      It certainly looks like the world of Ogre Battle was always about warfare. It started with humans fighting monsters for thousands of years, then fighting themselves for who knows how long, and only from 70 years ago (unification) to 25 years ago (Highlands conquering the continent) was there any peace.
      Still, that this behavior is "standard" for this world does not mean it's not evil. In this version, Gran Zenobia, always described as a good guy, would have said something like "She's afraid of being invaded, which probably means she's weak... if she's weak, she's not a threat to us in any way, but also it means we can easily take her stuff, all we have to do is start another war and throw some soldiers into the meat grinder and make a bunch more orphans, it's all good".
      Definitely changes the way I think of the story. "There was once a good and smart queen named Endora, who foresaw an invasion by a powerful military force from outside the continent. She talked to the leaders of the four other kingdoms hoping to form an alliance that could withstand such an invasion. But they were stupid so they didn't believe her, and they were evil so they decided to exploit what they perceived as weakness to take her kingdom by force".
      If there were a game made about that time 25 years before MotBQ, you'd be playing as the Highlands, the good underdog kingdom being invaded by its four neighboring greedy, bloodthirsty bullies.
      Well, thanks for the information.

    • @WarrenReport
      @WarrenReport  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BigSlimyBlob Yeah, I believe one part is adaptation and another part is retcon. I particularly hate the retcon they did with Gilbert.
      As there are only reports of what happened, it is not possible to judge someone as good or bad. I bet that Endora herself would also invade the neighbors if she had the opportunity, after all in this world no one becomes a ruler without that instinct. What is made very clear in the games is that King Tristan is benevolent, his father we don't know.
      We can't also overlook that Rashidi was involved, maybe he could have something to do with it? Manipulating the Lords behind the scenes to invade Endora so he could offer help and corrupt her?
      We need a game of this story!
