    This is a fair score.
    This game reminds me a lot of DOS PC era RPGs and Strategy games, which were almost impossible to play without the manual that came with it.
    In fact, reading the manual was part of the experience, making your relationship with the game even closer. Imagine coming home after buying, say, Eye of the Beholder 2, you open the box and along with CD/Floppy and the manual, came the world map and a lore/story book. You flip through these as your game is getting installed and the writing pulls into the fiction, and the manual entices you of the creative you can build parties, solve puzzles and defeat enemies.
    After that, you are ready to go for your adventure.
    I presume for console only games, which every aspect taught in the game itself, people can find this idea archaic, but that's how many PC games operated back then. They built a lot of trust with the player, because that's how they would be able to continually buy more of their games (remember that PC games were still humble in scale compared to consoles at the time).
    So I'm willing to bet Ogre Battle came with a manual (which would probably be hefty)
    Speaking of, Matsuno is a sucker for "telling story through gameplay". The "alignment" system sounds a lot like the code of honor many medieval kingdoms followed during warfare. If you were of a certain honor, your rules of fighting against a lower honor position enemy would be different from that against a similar or higher honor enemy.

    IIRC the unit upgrade paths came with the game on a poster/sheet thingy. the book and/or other game info also tells you about the alignment and reputation system. you actually don't want to slaughter armies than are weaker than you unless you want to become extremely evil. and if you do have any evil armies you want to keep them the heck away from the towns so the people don't see them, or your reputation will plummet. (though it depends if you're aiming for high rep/low rep or high alignment/low alignment; it all changes what ending you get, what characters and items you find, which levels you can unlock, etc.).

    This game seriously took me almost 6 months to "finish" I loved it and would restart several times to get a good unit composition to start and to manipulate the starting alignment for MUCH later on (starting evil for early and fast progression but doing the good things to make you good while VERY time-consuming in the later half of the game your a powerhouse against more vigorous opponents), they really need to do an HD version on modern systems or a continuation with the same mechanics it would sell like hotcakes

    This is my favorite console SRPG. (I never finished 64 because I only ever knew one person who owned it and he sold his copy while I was mid run.) I wish square would re-release the Ogre Battle games instead of remaking Tactics Ogre once a decade or so.

    Nice game. It has many props to help the player. I beat it without Tarot cards. While many games borrow elements from each other, the unique music is a reason to play. The gameplay is not always unique yet something fun to learn sometimes. ;)

    I would say the game really holds up well in a modern sense. It is a well built game, but if you're expecting top quality graphics, etc go elsewhere. The tactical battles are underestimated. By changing formation, classes, etc you can get through the game without using Tarots or consumables like heals, etc. It makes for a much better game when you play it that way.

  • @stevenmorton298
    @stevenmorton298 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The lack of hand-holding was because it was assumed that you had the material that came with the cart, Not only did it have an instruction manual, but it also had charts that had TONS of information.
    The problem is if you're looking for an Ogre Battle cart that still has the box, the instruction manual, and the charts, all I have to say is GOOD LUCK! YOU'LL NEED IT! (Well, that and a shit ton of money...)

    • @stevenmorton298
      @stevenmorton298 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      PS: Even with those charts, tweaking Charisma and Alignment in order to get the classes you wanted was STILL tricky as hell.

    That plan of camping your own base is a terrible strategy. Every day your troops are on the map costs money, a finite resource. Liberating towns and cities generates money daily. If you liberate all the towns after killing all the enemies, and then wait to generate money that way, you will lose all of your reputation. You might beat the game eventually, but with a horrible reputation and one of the worst endings of the game ....

    • @sallgoodman2323
      @sallgoodman2323 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool. I remember trying the Gameboy advance version out of curiosity and quickly became addicted to it. Shortly after I got into it, life got in the way of my gameplay.....until now. I'm downloading the game tonight

    • @Benkenobi8118
      @Benkenobi8118 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because you're not taking cities, you can liberate all the towns after the battle is over and use that to replenish your reputation. If you have a 5x100 full alignment group, you can gain a lot of reputation really quickly. Moneywise, if you're careful about your deployments, you won't need to farm that much money off the towns to continue funding your army. Once you get to Fort Allamoot, you can gain enough money to not have to worry about funding your army, and there is a town that will give you 30k per map to fund your military.
