The Ogre Battle saga is extremely dense and confusing for those who don't have a basic background, and even those who finish the game end up with some doubts.

Just finished Ogre Battle Reborn that was on my back log, man is this game good. I actually ended up going the chaos route because of my own morality, I was so intrigued how complex the story direction this game takes and how rare it is for other games do this. Love your content!
Thanks friend! Many people go down the Chaos path precisely because of morality itself, but the most canonical path in that story is the lawful one! Highly recommend, it's another game altogether!

The part of this playthrough that I find most tragic is the way Vyce dies crying out for Denam to save him

@@WarrenReport Leonar dies on every path. Wish he's recruitable at least on Neutral route since he really got along with Denam in that route.
That would also make him the only guest character that never became playable. Lancelot H and Warren were too in original version but not anymore in the remake thanks to CODA system.
Gildas' death was also tragic to me when I played Neutral route for the first time, especially after playing Law route in my previous playthrough in PS1 version. Next to Vyce's death.
I'm doing a Chaos run now. Way too many bad things have went down and I apparently missed a ton of great characters. Crazy how not wanting to kill innocent people at the start of the game would send me down such a sorry path.
Exactly. From the way the game is structured it seems that the developers paid a lot more attention to Lawful Route, as if it were the canon of the story... that is, Denam puts his ideals above his morals
Yeah and I couldn't make Denam Swordmaster in PSX version since it's L only class
I would also like to share several reasons and experiences with the franchise and why it is so important to me:
1.- The Ogre Battle franchise was the first one to explain me the concepts of Law and Chaos, and why its axis is NOT THE SAME as the Good and Evil dichotomy.
2.- Tactics Ogre was one of the first games of the original PlayStation I finished in a friend's house, the other being the compillation of FF V and FFVI. While the FF VII blew my mind it was only a demo. Those experiences conviced me to prefer the PSX over the N64, as the titles compelled me specially during my early teenage years.
3.- Having born in a non-English country (I am from Mexico btw), Tactics Ogre motivated me to learn the foreign language using a dictionary and searching several web pages during the early years of the Internet.
Since I had to borrow the PSP version and I did not had a GameBoy Advanced when it first launched, this will technically the first time I buy and own a game from the IP.

I had a PSX, but I didn't have a memory card, so we always tried to finish Tactics Ogre in one go but we never could, massive game!
I'm also from a foreign country, Ogre Battle is uniting nations just like Denam and Catiua did in Valeria!
I'm a lot older than you, it seems, but the game that gave me motivation to learn english when I barely understood it was FF6

A lot of people play and don't understand the story at all. I was one of those. As my favorite gaming saga I want more people to know it and fall in love with it!
When I first played and went through it in the Chaos route. I did not know what I was getting into. I decided on choices based purely on what my own heart and thoughts were feeling towards. I did not recruit a lot of characters it seems, but at the same time I was also just jaded and mad when the two friends left me during those critical choice moments or the war.
*For Vyce:* Yes I know he was always meant to be a foil to Denam, but dammit. His flip flop changes were just so aggravating that it made me nearly pull my hair out whenever I had to deal with him. Personally he was the least of the two that I cared about and definitely my most disliked npc. It boiled my guts when he was two-timing, triple dealing all over the place that his eventual death by hanging put both a smile on my face and me saying, "You got what you deserved."
I tried to do the Law Route, but having Vyce talk to me from a 'moral high ground' pissed me off so damn much that I never really got to finish that route, even when I was able to recruit him. I just benched him and in spite... deleted that game file. Yes I was petty. I was young.
*For Catiua:* Okay I get it, she was emotionally drained and distraught. Yet her turning on you while it was clear you wanted to make peace for the nation was for the good of not just everyone but to make it a place for both you and your 'step-sister'. I feel like a lot this madness could've been avoided if the two talked more or at least Catiua could see the bigger picture.
The first time around, and a much younger me playing then, was not forgiving of her when she so easily got swayed by the Knights of Lodis. The same group of murderous thugs that caused our situation in the first place. Sadly I did not stay my hand and struck her down because... I just couldn't trust her anymore and suspected she would still be a Lodis puppet if she was that easily manipulated. Also my choices were bad.
Second or third time around, yes I tried to save her. More effort to save her than I ever would put into for Vyce (which is nonexistent) and got the Princess Ending.
As for Leonar... contemptible snake. I never gave him that 1 on 1 duel. I despised him enough that I wanted everyone to take a piece out of him. Especially with how he seems to try to justified his actions and serving the duke. Granted after his death, I will admit to being surprised by his back up plan. I was expecting Leonar loyalists to keep on with the fight but that never happen. His lawful route antics just... baffled me and made me think.
"Why in the hell did you put me through all that crap in the Chaos Route?"
It is funny but these three characters are my personal top three unlikable characters.
1st Vyce (No surprise, dude just pushes all the hate buttons in me)
2nd Leonar (Would have be first place if he was not so damn confusing)
3rd Catiua (only below Leonar because she is mostly redeemable)

Personally I'm shocked at myself for not disliking the actual enemies of the story. Okay Tataros could easily take Catiua's place, but the dude did not piss me off as much as those three did. Hell he took a whooping from his own men because he had no control over them.
Nybeth, despite the headache he gave me when fighting him, was just that basic tone bad guy twirling his mustache to me that it was more hilarious once I figured out how to snipe him dead with archers.
I dunno, personally I liked the moral and emotional dynamics and that everything is not black and white; but some of the choices of the way the story developed felt just sadistic to make you hate certain NPCs and not give them any quarter or remorse. The game mechanics were the hardest things for me to adjust to as I came into this game after playing Person of Lordly Caliber and March of the Black Queen mostly.
Sorry for the rant, figured I'd make myself clear on my thoughts about Tactics Ogre and I suppose I should be looking forward to Reborn. I dunno if I want to hear the people I dislike talk with a voice now. Especially Vyce!

I agree in part, we need to remember that the three main characters are teenagers, with all that implies, Vyce's rebelliousness, Catiua's jealousy and Denam's innocence make sense. But it could have been better developed, more detailed, to make us really understand the character.
Lodis ends up not looking like the villains as they appear briefly, we have a lot more contact with Ronwey, Balbatos and Brantym and that's why they look like monsters.

Me too when first playing the game. No idea about route split and I coincidencally chose Law route on my first playthrough then Neutral route on my second playthrough then Chaos route on my third playthrough back in PSX version.
Missed bunch of characters back then such as Shelley/Sherri, Oxyones/Occione, Ganb/Ganpp, Selye/Cerya in Neutral route, etc.
This is the single best lore video I've ever seen.

I just finished binge watching all of your videos, in preparation for Tactics Ogre Reborn. Oh man, these videos are fantastic! You sir, are incredible! I had no idea this whole saga was so intertwined with each entry. Immensely cool!

@@WarrenReport I was shocked that the villain of LUCT is the save the world hero from the very first game! That like, blew my mind! PoLC and LUCT happening concurrently was also crazy to realize! The recurring villains, especially the body swapping wizard, still all being alive were huge WTF moments. How have we not had an entry where Lodis gets invaded or called to task?! What made the Loditian pope so evil? Why is the Hero of Lodis so loyal to him? Isn't he supposed to be a good guy? Balder showed that all of the Abyss isn't just chaos, it's the vacuous peace of entropy and void; the absence of mercurial life. What's the end goal there? Why are the Chaos Gates to Heaven always sealed? Wouldn't one remaining open, just to contact the Heavens, make more sense? What is the heavenly host thinking? What does the Zenithian Armband do?
Your videos left me with so many unanswered questions. The questions, logic, dialogues, and narratives are all immensely thought provoking. FF Tactics seems so intellectually uncomplicated by comparison. When I was thirty minutes into the LUCT video before you said, "and this is where you start," made me realize just how much I was missing when I played that game! The fact that the Original Ogre Battle was expanded upon, and yet stayed consistent with each retelling really helped drive home the importance of perspective, and societal memory that is a huge part of these games.

I said on the other one I wanted to wait till I finished reborn since i never finished LUCT but I got greedy and figgured I'd watch up untill i got to the parts i was at... and man its really hitting me this world has had a REALLY bad ... what 25-50 years? multiple wars, hell uprisings, angels attempting to destroy the world , and who know's what else.
Also I can't belive Alphonse was Lancelot seems like a big shift in personality, ( I saw the KoL ending but it didn't mean much untill I started reborn)
Yeah! The story of Ogre Battle is quite complex, knowing some concepts doesn't spoil the game but allows you to locate yourself when the characters comment on these events for example.
Alphonse was a guy with character, but when he sees the woman he loved sacrifice herself for him on KOL what happens is he loses all hope in humanity and becomes Lanselot, the most feared warrior in Lodis.
My first time playing this game on PSX, I didn't knew about the routes. I refused to participate in the massacre, thinking that was the only choice, so I followed the Chaos route.
I always figured this one as the canon one, but on the Remake, with Ravness and Ozma on Lawful, now I am not so sure. I am sad that you cannot get the 4 sisters on Law but I guess Chaos needs something.
The other games consider Law as the canon route so I think I like Lawful route for this game as the canon route, as well.

Thanks for the comment! The series has 5 games: 2 tactical games and 3 troop management games (the style that served as the inspiration for the Unicorn Overlord that was recently released). I've been playing both tactical games for over 20 years, so for me it's extremely easy... I find the management games much more difficult (Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen and Ogre Battle 64 Person of Lordly Caliber). It requires a learning time, but it's not that complex.

🧙🏼♂️ Thanks! I try to make the videos with the canonical history of each game. The neutral path is already disregarded due to the CODA events, so what's left is the chaotic and lawful path. I intend to make the video of the lawful route until the month of November to complement this one.
Waiting for a sequel that combines all the stories from all the games into one final epic encounter with the Lodis empire as well as all the characters from the previous games showing up in it.

You sacrifice so many characters in the Chaos route. The funny part is that they gave Lawful even more characters with the reboot games. Not sure Cressida is worth a Ravness + Ozma.
Oh right, Arycelle isn't a Chaos only recruit in the newer games.
Maybe they think it evens out by having all 4 sisters. But I dunno, they have weird sprites and I never liked them. They couldn't just hand over Cressida either. They had to turn it into a nightmare torture simulator to recruit this single character.

It's amazing how different this story is compared to my playthrough. I wanted Ravness because she was like Agrias oaks from fft. So I HAD to take part in the massacre. But from there on I went with what I wanted to do. Ended up with Ozma and the rest was history. I LOVE Ozma but I also like Catuia with a light whip. She went from being useless to one of my best units. However I still think I should have killed her for turning on the family. Kinda like Fredo.
I agree that betrayal is something very difficult to overcome, but we need to remember that it was Tartaros himself who manipulated her, he specializes in making people betray their families (Balxephon for example)
I think you have many events that chronologically wrong though (such as Iuria event occur after the end of main game. Some character not related to event (encounter of Sherri and recruit her in cutscene only have Denam and Olivya participate in).

🧙🏼♂️ I had to use some poetic license to try to fit the sidequests together with the main story so it all made sense in the end. In a real war the characters would not be willing to walk around the island with infinite time available as the game allows.
🧙🏼♂️ Most of the sidequests that were presented in the video take place at the same time as the events of the game, with the exception of the event with Iuria, in CODA 1, which I believe didn't need to wait until the end of the game to make sense, as in the case of CODA 2 and 3.

Great video. This version is from the PSP? Because the ending for Lans Hamilton is much more dire in the snes version. Also, some changes in the newer versions are weird to me, like Xenobia instead of Zenobia. And Arycelle instead of Aloser hahaha xD.
The chaos route for me is the best and most heroic one. Denim manages to build everything from nothing without using nasty politics.

Hey! Yes, this is the full version of the story, with changes and additions from the psp remake (like the CODA episodes that take place after the original ending of the game).
The name changes was made by the developers to get closer to the pronunciation they originally intended. Zenobia is inspired by the Byzantine empire for example. These and more information you can see in my video of real inspirations in Tactics Ogre!
I also like the more heroic way that the chaotic route presents itself, but I'm sorry to inform you that it is MUCH more likely that the lawful route is the canon of this story!

About the lawful ending, are you sure? In the story of the other games the "good side" always wins. Also, the hard to do ending is always the canon one. I thought that the Denim as a king was the canon one.
Are you talking about the similarities between the LUCT and Yuguslavia war? Also, if can that would be an interesting topic. A comparative between the game factions and the real world war on Yuguslavia.
@@TheSenhorcaioo The developers have already confirmed that the ending where Catiua becomes queen is canon. They also confirmed that the stories present in CODA 1 and 2 are also canon (since you didn't play I won't give spoilers here). With this information the Neutral path is officially dropped from canon.
Chaotic and lawful are as possible then, but when you play both you get the impression that lawful is much better worked and thought out, it really seems like a complete journey, with the redemption of the 3 protagonists at the end.
The fact that you need to carry out a massacre shows the horrors of war, and not that there is always a right and wrong side (also because your refusal does not affect ANYTHING in the event).
About the parallels with the war in Yugoslavia, it's all in my video about the real inspirations of the events.
I also have a lot of affection for the original version of the game, especially the portraits (that's why I used them in the video instead of the updated versions).

About the massacre on the chaos route, in my opinion it shows the greater character of Denim as a leader, one worried about the well-being of the entire island in extreme contrast with the other political leaders, like Barbatos and Ronwey, in which are interested only in power. But I understand what you said, in my next play I'll try the lawful route (with extreme disgust lol).
And thats what I like about the ogre battle, the decisions and the characters. Lans Tartare is not a demon when you know him better, in fact, he is even played as fool in some degree.
This CODA is played in the psp remake, right? I'll give a try.
About Yugoslavia, I also didn't knew that you already had a video about.
@@TheSenhorcaioo Yes, the 4 CODA episodes are in the psp remake or reborn version. I advise you to play the Reborn version, many things have been corrected in the gameplay that in the psp version, in my opinion, were spoiled.
Denam, at the beginning of the game is not a great leader, he is a teenager along with his sister and his best friend in search of revenge for their families. This is even clearer in the dialogue he has with Hamilton about the fear of going to the battlefield or not being successful. Hamilton advises him as a father would. Denam is also innocent, he believes Duke's fight was legitimate, so participating in the massacre is about following orders, a lesser evil to achieve a greater good. He will develop his own personality, leadership skills and morale as the game progresses. The lawful route, although initially terrible from an ethical point of view, has amazing twists and turns, I believe you will be satisfied with the journey!

In any route actually, this is CODA Episode 3. Although the canon so far confirmed to be episodes 1 and 2 of CODA, I'm absolutely sure that Lans recovering will be considered if they were to make a next game, to bring all the beloved characters of the franchise together.
Loved Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen... but greatly disliked Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together.
Mechanically it was only kind of bad. The story, however, was super depressing, and Kachua was a total brat the whole time. It's awful writing that she's insane for most of the game and then either kills herself or magically becomes good and wise depending on a single dialogue option. I expect I will not be playing Reborn.
I agree with you, Catiua could be better developed to tell her narrative arc.

I get that we don’t know which ending is canon but may I ask why you believe C path is canon?
I kinda feel like so much attention was put into the L path for psp it seems they want the L path to be canon. Plus it has so many exclusives. Xapan, Occionne, Jeunan, Ravness, not to mention Ozma and Vyce getting redeemed, Hobrym’s story gets more context due to Ozma, Arycelle being recruitable, not to mention CODA 4 requires Vyce + Catiua hence implies that L + Princess being the most complete path.
Would love to hear your thoughts on that.
🧙🏼♂️ What we do know is that neutral path is not canon, as all xenobians need to survive. The Chaos path is interesting because the 4 sisters survive. I'm finishing the lawful path video right now, it should be posted soon.
