NorthernLion, known primarily for his riichi mahjong content. His name comes from the "North" tile in the game and the fact that he is famous for his bluff strategy. He was called Northern Lyin until he, his publicist, and Jay "Wolves" Atmydoor redesigned his persona as a "Lion," since he and his wife adopted a child who turned out to be two cats unsafely swaddled in a blanket.

7:40 Fun fact, there were actually no 7-pin tiles left. One was discarded by Nanz, the other was the dora-indicator. There is always one hand worth of tiles (the "dead wall") that aren't normally drawn during a hand. Four of the tiles are reserved for draws when you make a Kan, 5 tiles are reserved to indicate the Dora and the other five are under them to indicate the Ura-Dora.

Since the Egg mentions Thirteen Orphans as "The Exodia" of hands, I'll say what it is: The hand is composed of 1 set of terminals (AKA, the 1 and 9 tiles) of each suit, plus one of every Honour tile, plus a duplicate tile to complete a pair and have 13 tiles. It is also not the rarest hand in the game, there are many that are way harder due to requiring multiple sets of triplets, and one what straight up requires 4 quads. There are also hands that are just "Win on your first turn by drawing any valid hand", which have stupidly low chances

  • @ravenwitch1841
    @ravenwitch1841 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

On the 14:22 hand I would have gone for a hand combination where every set and pair has a terminal or honour tile in it, that means dropping the red four as the first discard, of course it’s better to go for fast hands when you have the option, but if you get one really good hand that can often decide the game, so I think the risk would have been worth it, additionally, kans actually do give more points than pons, the scoring system is based on two factors, one is han, which is basically what you see at the end of the game, if you get a dragon triplet that’s one han for example, the other is fu, there are a lot of different things that give fu, but the basics are that quads give the most, closed ones are better than open ones, triplets still give fu, but sequences do not, you can actually look at lists online that show how many points a hand is worth that has a specific amount of fu and han.
Edit: a honours quad is actually worth even more fu, plus you reveal additional dora indicators which if lucky can dramatically boost the value of your hand, and since he was most likely gonna open that hand anyways I think it would have made sense to kan, but still I’d say you’re doing pretty well NL.

    • @vhgs9319
      @vhgs9319 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Going for an outside hand (chanta/junchan) would have been great, but I'd HEAVILY advise against open kan in situations like that. While it's true that a big hand can win you the game, that also means one really bad hand can totally sink you. Consider:
      - The new dora is more likely to benefit other players, mostly because they can still riichi to get extra ura-dora from it.
      - The hand is far from tenpai with mostly bad waits, so the dead wall draw isn't particularly exciting; ideally you'd want to maximize the chance of hitting rinshan.
      - The extra fu are unlikely to bump a hand into taking first place that otherwise wouldn't.
Of course, if you're really behind, then you have no choice but to pop off and hope for the best. But USUALLY the conditions are pretty strict to make the reward worth the risk.

Some DAE Mahjong knowledge: You mentioned that you don't get more points for having four white dragons instead of three, but actually, for a hand worth 4 han or less, having a kan of dragons will give you lots of fu, which in turn can increase your score by a decent amount. You also might get the pog draw on the dora tile. (I still agree with keeping the hand closed though)

follow-up, looks like either straights or x of a kind?

    • @khajiit92
      @khajiit92 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@OfficialMaxBox
generally to have a valid hand you're trying to make a bunch of sets of 3 + one pair (since you need 14 tiles total). You can have straights of length 3, or 3 of a kind. larger straights don't actually help (unless it's big enough you can get two straights that are 3 long, like 1,2,3 and 4,5,6).
since he already had the green 4s as a 3-of-a-kind, he can't use those in a straight anymore, although if he had a fourth one he could choose to make the existing 3-of-a-kind into a 4-of-a-kind OR use it for a separate straight (like 4,5,6).
4 of a kind is treated basically the same as 3 of a kind and gives you some bonuses but doesn't change things too much because you get an extra tile when you 4 of a kind so you still have room.
On top of having a valid hand, you need at least one yaku (think of it as a win condition). There's a ton of them and you can look up cheat sheets, but e.g. having 3-of-a-kind of dragon tiles or one of the special winds counts as a win condition (the one corresponding to your seat or to the round of the game, in this version the round is always east, and your seat rotates until you've been in each seat at least once). Another example is having a had where all the sets of 3 you make include 1s or 9s or dragons or wind tiles, another example is having NONE of the sets including 1s or 9s or dragons or wind tiles. Also if you keep your hand concealed when you're one tile away from a valid hand you can declare 'riichi' and doing that gives you a yaku by itself but if you open your hand by stealing tiles you need to have some other yaku to be able to win.
There's a couple of special hands that don't need you to have the sets of 3 + a pair thing, one is if you have 7 pairs of tiles, another is if you have one each of the dragon and wind tiles, and a 1 and 9 in each suit, + one extra of any of those. But apart from that you need to have a yaku + a valid hand to win.

    How to basically play:
Keywords and minor explanations below. This game is beautiful, but a lot of nuances. I personally believe Riichi Mahjong is the superior version of the game, but if yaku is too difficult to understand, you can try Chinese Mahjong. It uses some extra tiles but doesn’t involve yaku, with that said.
The aim of Riichi Mahjong is to create 4 sets (chi: 123, pon: 111) and a pair (33) out of your 14 tiles.
Each players turn begins with them drawing a tile, and will end when they discard a tile.
If you have 2 of the same tile in your hand, and someone discards that same tile, you can call “pon” (4 tiles is called kan). If the player to your left(the person who goes before you) plays a tile to finish a sequence (123) in your hand, you can call chi.
There are 4 of each tile in the game.
    [Honor tiles]
    Wind: North, East, South West. (N, E, S, W)
Dragon: Red, Green, White (R, G, Wh)
Prevalent wind: The game's wind type (usually east, south if gamemode allows)
Seat wind: This is your specific wind
    [Terminals]
    1 and 9's
    [Simples]
    2 - 8
    [Types of hands]
Open (You've claimed a pon, chi or kan)
Closed (You haven't taken any tiles from discards, and therefor do not have to show your set)
    [Winning a round]
Ron (You've completed your 4 sets and pair with a discard from another player. You will only take points from the person you took the tile from)
Tsumo (You've drawn the tile yourself, everyone pays you)
    [Hand states]
Riichi (One tile away from winning, with a closed hand. You cannot change your hand if you declare riichi, only touching the tile that doesn't fit in your hand)
Tenpai (One tile away from winning. If the game comes to an end with no one scoring an entire hand, scoring is based on who has Tenpai)
No-ten (You are not one tile away from winning. If the game ends with no one scoring, you will pay people with Tenpai)
Furiten (You are one tile away from winning, but you have that tile in your discard pile. You cannot call ron from another player, you MUST draw the tile yourself)
    [Yaku]
A win condition, you MUST have at least one yaku to be able to score your hand.
Basic yaku (open hand): Any 3 sets + a pair + 3 prevalent or seat winds
    (Open hand) Any 3 sets + a pair + 3 dragons
(Open hand) Any 4 sets + a pair, but with no terminals or honor tiles
(Closed hand) Any 4 sets + a pair
    (Closed hand) 7 pairs
    (Closed & Open) All terminals
(Closed & Open) All tiles are the same suit
There are a lot more yaku's, these are just simple forms, it would probably be best to look up the more complex ones.
Note: It's a lot easier to score a closed hand. As you don't NEED honor tiles, which are usually the more wanted tiles

20:45 trying to go for riichi with so many pairs in hand is very difficult because drawing natural triples is difficult. A few turns earlier, you could have taken the pon and gone for tanyao and it wouldn't have been too far off because you only had 3 terminal tiles.

I started this video a confused man, but elected not to continue in ignorance, but to instead pause it half way through, read multiple documents online, play one (1) full game through south-4, WHICH I WON, and come back a changed and wiser man. I resume the video, I understand more now. This is how I win.

NL: Who's holding south when they're not sitting south?
NL two seconds later: The north tiles don't do anything for us but thy can still make a pair or a triplet.

Oh my god I can’t believe he would discard the seven of bamboo sitting south ready to kan so another time would be flipped from the dead wall so he could potentially have more dora giving himself a chance at a bigger lead!

The guy didn't want to drop your south tile because you were South and spooked him by calling all those tiles thereby showing him that you were in Tenpai. He was in Tenpai too so he was content with using those South as a pair and having a shitty wait than risk dealing into you.
