It was pretty hard to lose the game at that point, but the K2 play was literally wasting a turn and then the C7 play was a blunder, but still winning. Then he played E4 which didn't even make sense, and lost his momentum. At this point he *still* could have won if he knew how to defend properly, by playing C4, but he had no clue how to defend, so he lost.

      @@seangreeby8424 well it's not obvious for arbitrarily large boards, and not obvious why the grid being hex tiles instead of square tiles makes it true, because you can construct a counter example for squares for a standard 64 square chess board. The hex tiles have more incoming and outgoing connections, and don't distinguish between corners and sides. So this rigidity and uniformity of connections is key to proving the existence of no ties

    Hex is a Game developed to have an easy proof for an optimal strategy existing. Fun was never part of the design. Yet People picked up on it.
    By the way : the first player is the one has to make a mistake for the second player to be able to win.

    • @zwergesel
      @zwergesel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      What are you talking about? The game was not just designed for that proof. It's true that the first player has a winning strategy via a strategy-stealing argument, i.e. they could steal the second player's winning strategy if one existed because an extra move is never a disadvantage. However, that does not mean that optimal play is easy or that the game is not fun. This game has actually very complicated strategy and tactics once you get a bit more familiar with it.
      Also, due to the first player advantage it is usually played with the "pie rule" where the second player is allowed to swap colors on his first move, which forces the first player to make a balanced opening move, so that neither side has an immediate, significant advantage. However, it seems that Clubhouse games unfortunately omitted this arguably quite important rule.

    • @Cronos804
      @Cronos804 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@zwergesel So i looked it up again and it is true it was not just designed for the proof. however it was essentially invented 2 times by 2 mathematicians independently and one of those inventions was highly motivated to have a good example for winning strategies. I don't say it cant be fun. But i'm not that sure it was meant to be a fun game either.

    People here misunderstand Hex. It's an unsolved game on an 11x11 board, and while player one has a theoretical winning strategy, the argument that proves that isn't constructive. The issue with the Clubhouse implementation lies with that it doesn't use the PIE rule to mitigate first-player advantage.

    Have never played the game myself but it very much feels like a simplification of Go. Like a game only about the ladder moves in Go, with a bit of the territorial aspects in there to some degree and a hex dimension thrown in for good measure. I disagree with Egg, I feel like this could be quite an interesting game to explore for a while.
    P.S: Common man, it is ok to be bad at it. I know this Golden goblet is about entertainment and not flawless gameplay and I am of course not expecting that. I watch you for the banter as much as the next guy. So have fun with it and try to learn it. Would be interesting to watch you try to get better at it as you always do. Where is the fighting spirit? You are known for your tenacity but here you just gave up? It is hard to watch you give up, not hard to watch you be bad (that is just good content). Sorry, think I came off way too criticizing there. You clearly didn't feel it with this game and that is super ok. Guess I just got bummed since I felt otherwise. I'll be there for the next one. Thanks for the content as always.

    The tek is to make gaps where you have two places you can move to connect both sides, but the oppoent needs to move two times to pass through the gap. Thus, by placing two pieces, you have guaranteed three tiles of your bridge and block your opponent. To counter this, you need to do the same in such a manner that you block their bridge. I feel like it's the kind of game with an optimal strategy, where you can read a two page guide and always win against anyone who hasn't read the guide.

      You thinking of 11:09? Red still has the win after k1. If blue blocks at i1, red can just play j2. First principle in Hex is: if you have two non-overlapping ways to connect, you're connected.
      (Second principle of Hex is: If your ways of connecting overlap, it gets complex. Sometimes you're connected, sometimes you're not. That's where the real meat of the game is, but he never got there!)

    The trick is to place a stone 2 tiles away from another so that there are 2 empty hexes that touch both. Its called a bridge and is unstoppable. If your opponent places a stone in one of the two free spaces you can immediately put yours in the other space completing the line.

    Your trying to go around him by going left to right (red to red). so hes able to block you and place his line left to right all at the same time... You need to go front to back, so any sideways movement is just helping your opponent out.

    I have to wonder how NL's brain even was working here. Like you have to go from blue to blue and yet at 9:30 you're spending your turns exclusively trying to block red's access to blue, which they don't care for at all? I just... I can't even fathom what you were thinking about. I wish I could have like a neural synapse playback for this video because it's just mindboggling to me.

    10:00 "We've got tempo now, they're responding to me"
    Actually already lost the game. At this point, it is impossible for you to prevent the line unless they allow you to. Which they did like 3 times... and they still won.
    I gotta say, being this bad at the game is actually kinda impressive. It's almost like you're just making random moves xD

    NL, the rules for 90% of clubhouse games are like 30 seconds long, just read em. Honestly, just do what MALF does and play the game in practice mode waiting for a match. If it takes too long to get a game you can pause the recording, but I think it familiarizes the game for viewers and yourself before the most important game of the video happens.
