      The Galaxy Refit was 25 years after the rest of ST:TNG. The armored Voyager was 20 years after ST:Voy IIRC. Together with the events of ST:DS9, that doesn't leave enough space for the anti-Borg armor unless said armor was invented just after VOY.
      There's also the caveat that the anti-cloak agreement went out the window in the future part of All Good Things because the Romulan Empire was no more. In the primary timeline, where both ST:Generations and ST:Voy happened, that agreement was still standing. But my main point would be that the cloak rather than the newest armor would be a Galaxy-Refit's primary defense; you wouldn't want to put _both_ on a hull that's way past its prime, just like you wouldn't put top-of-the-line equipment on an Excelsior in TNG's first season.

      The federation is a very balanced faction with a well-rounded technology mix (which is nevertheless a bit rough in places). Their torpedo tubes might have less range and firepower than Klingon disruptors on ships of comparable tonnage, but they make up for it in many aspects. Their ships aren't built around one mighty gun (and that includes the D Refit); they're neither glass cannons nor mighty glaciers. The range and punch they're lacking is made up by better chances to score an actual hit at range, the ammunition depth to keep fighting for minutes, the ability to take some hits and stay in the fight, and generally superior drive technology to assist ships in distress, escape from most ambushes, pursue flleing enemies, and delivering defeat in detail.
      The Galaxy class has been classified as a battleship by several outside factions, but they're true multi-role ships. If they look inferior to anyone else's dedicated warship class, it's always worth considering what the Federation can do should the need to fight arise: the Galaxy Refit, which has been upgunned, and whose scientific instrumentation has given way to more ammunition, antimatter, shield generators, and spare parts.

    • @achtsekundenfurz7876

      Exactly. ST:TNG has a strong "Nelson's Rule" going:
      "No matter how alien, both sides are always in agreement about the side that's "up." "
      The only few cases where ships are rolled randomly to one side is where they're out of order, an analogy to listing or capsized wet vessels. Even in the 3D battles, ships tend to fly over the enemy like planes, or dive below them like submarines, but always with their wings "level" from the enemy's perspective. Even the battle with the D-Refit resembles a surfacing submarine, even more so as it drops out of cloak just before firing from below.

      I always thought that the Galaxy nacellas were on the small side. They make the ship look top-heavy (he said in the video that the bigger ones give the ship better balance, basically the same point), and the sideways saucer gives it a painfully _slow_ look in every sense of that word.
      But I guess the Galaxy was never built for speed, but for a good mix of features, including "fast enough." Tbf, internal volume is worth a lot if you wanna be versatile, so that excuses it a bit. And if you do the "long" instead of "wide" saucer wrong, it looks even _more_ top-heavy.

      Direct comparison is largely speculative. But Imperial capital ships tend to be found in packs and tend to carry swarms of fighters. And while they have an alarming tendency to collide with each other they don't seem to put as much explodium into their critical systems.

    • @luisarruda3061

      P phasers have pinpoint accuracy, so TIE fighters would be useless. Plus, Imperial vessels are really slow at sub-light speeds when compared to Federation starships. The vast majority of Fed starships can reach up to 0.90c, meanwhile what is the maximum sub-light speed of an ISD? 0.30c? About the exploding consoles, yeah I agree, I don’t know why they put TNT on that consoles. Maybe it is a self destruct mechanism.

    I wanted to make my own cgi Trek series based on a Galaxy Class refit dreadnought serving during the Dominion war. The ship would have been built at the same time as the Defiant class but was mothballed due to the high cost, lessened urgency of the Borg threat, and violations of the treaty of Algeron (it had the phase cloak). After the Dominion took Deep Space 9, Starfleet command, with some influence from Section 31, decided to commission the ship and use it for deep covert operations behind enemy lines.
    It was going to have several story arcs including a fighter squadron based on the ship, and an elite unit of SAS type soldiers loosely based on the Angosians (The Hunted TNG). The commander of the ship was one of these soldiers but was severely injured in a previous battle as a Colonel and can no longer serve as a front line soldier, his only chance to stay in the fight is to be promoted to General and command a star ship.
    I had stories worked out and everything, it even had a crossover into the Starwars universe, courtesy of a convenient temporal vortex. Then i became an adult and had to adult and find work and all that adulty stuff so i never got around to doing it :-(
    I still dream of what might have been...

    The pylon fins added only 2 new phaser strips, while moving 2 pre-existing phaser strips out of the way of the fins themselves. Also, the third nacelle's connecting part seems to remove the ship's aft torpedo launcher. In total, the ship adds 8 Phaser systems and 2 Torpedo launchers while removing 1 Torpedo launcher.
    The three nacelle setup is likely a callback to a fictional design in Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise which showed a "dreadnought" based heavily on the Constitution refit but with a third nacelle in the middle.

  • @zaltheral
    @zaltheral 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My theory:
    My thoughts on it is along the lines of this being a Dominion War era refit that didn't see fruition until after the war was over. We know there are several examples of this happening in the real world. Several types of ships, fighters, bombers, etc that had development started during World War II, but didn't quite see service in time to see combat.
    I think the need for such a refit comes from the loss of the USS Valiant, and Starfleet realizing it had no single ship that could stand up to a monster like that Dominion battleship. Since we already see in the tech manuals that development on such a large ship takes years, they decided to upfit an already proven, and large, spaceframe. We even see what could perhaps be some of the early refits towards the Galaxy-X with the USS Venture, since the Venture and the Ent-D refit both have the additional phaser strips on top of the warp engines.
    I would further conjecture that in the alternate timeline, the Enterprise D survived that timeline's Dominion War, but in the process was so badly damaged as to be mothballed instead of repaired, given material and personnel shortages during wartime. She was only saved from the scrap heap by a Riker with enough clout later on to have her repaired, and brought up to 'new' Galaxy class specifications in the process.
    Purely speculation to be sure, but it fits my head canon.

    I think the Enterprise D went through a few "refits" - at least 2 that I can think of - during it's series run until it met its end in Generations - nothing as a total makeover like the original Enterprise refit during Kirk's time, but it did have more than enough internally. I believe the ship was designed to be a bit more modular due to its original parameters as a long-term deep space exploration vessel before the Borg shenanigans came about thanks to Q's interference. As one of the largest ships at its time of incenption, it was more or less a warp-capable mini-starbase - especially if you factor in the amount of amenities it had as well as the families on board. My reasoning that I believe it was originally designed to be more modular is due to the designs of its sister-class ship: the Nebula class - it's got ALL of the power of a Galaxy class, but with more scientific leanings despite supposedly almost being just as armed to the teeth as the primary Galaxy class starships. The federation was slowly veering out of it's more militaristic slant and turning into true exploration until events sucked them all back into a more military footing.

    • @DanielRichards644
      @DanielRichards644 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the ship was constantly getting refit in some way or the other, the bridge saw several subtle design changes over the years (and some major ones for the movie), not to mention basically every episode (or every other episode) of the first season or so saw them back at spacedock or somewhere for repairs or upgrades (refits). that damn ship was a lemon with how many times it had to go back for upgrades.

    • @obsidiansands
      @obsidiansands 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DanielRichards644 EXACTLY! But I don't think it was much of a lemon as it was basically "upgradable" due to it's design of being able to swap parts/modules like the nebula class is able to do for different mission parameters. If I remember correctly, it also had a huge ass industrial replicator to take care of recycling and fabbing of large new parts. The LCARS - while sort of "dated" now - is pretty ingenious in its concept in that you can easily reconfigure any new tech/hardware/system upgrade to the ship from there without having to clear out a physical console and replace them. Meaning you can upgrade the internals while still using the regular interface in an updated configuration. The only thing that I thought was slightly assbackwards were the tricorders - they should have gone with an "all-screen" design like the regular consoles, making it even more versatile. It never made any sense to have actual buttons/knobs/what-have-you on a tricorder which is Star Trek's version of a sonic screwdriver.

    • @DanielRichards644
      @DanielRichards644 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@obsidiansands i'd agree with the tricorders, if they already had full touchscreens everywhere else you would have thought they would do that with the portable device so it can do many more functions, but smart phones where to far out in the real world for them to think that way when they made the series, it does kinda make you wonder if they did a complete reboot (not sticking to ANY even remotely connected cannon) what would the Tricorders and other tech look like, would it be like the suit that the chick on Continuum wore where it was just built into there uniforms and they could generate a holographic display, would communicators be injected under the skin, I mean you would think anything that would limit the risk of tech getting "left behind" as they explore under developed planets would be embraced in the future and wearables are something coming into fashion in the last few years, so it would be only natural advancement of that tech to have it integrated into the uniform.

    • @obsidiansands

    Four nacelles is essentially the same balancing act as two nacelles. You just have to create two "virtual nacelles" by balancing pairs of individual nacelles together, then balance the two virtual aggregates to get your final running setup. Three nacelles is a different balance (three-phase) but an equally valid one. It adds complexity to engineering, but it is more fail-safe as long as you ALSO generate and maintain conventional single-phase balance modes for each possible pairing of two nacelles; this gives you warp capability with one nacelle knocked out/destroyed (assuming one requires interaction between nacelles for warp to occur at all)
