The jump in quality of uniforms from The Motion Picture and Wrath of Khan is amazing. The WOK-UDC movie era uniforms might actually be my favorite canon Star Trek uniforms. I only wish they were slightly easier to tell rank and position rather.
A good reason that uniform stood the test of time: it was gorgeous. Not much could be improved upon it. The Odyssey Dress uniform in Star Trek Online is the perfect variant, especially when colored black and gray. Hope we get that one day.

Gene Roddenberry thought disposable clothes were the way of the future, so that's what those uniforms were supposed to look like, and that's also why the characters were wearing different clothes in every scene.
Kirk was also okay. His Uniform resembles what i expect a Admiral to wear. But all the rest? God.....i Wonder what Rodenbarrey was thinking when he came up with that
@@neptuneplaneptune3367 Roddenberry had become almost a hippie at that point. If you look at his non-Trek stuff, and the early concept art for Star Trek Phase II, they shared a lot of that jumpsuit/utopian feel to them. The Wrath of Khan uniforms and rank insignias were the work of Nicholas Meyer and Harve Bennett; Meyer had a 'Horatio Hornblower' vision for Trek, and Roddenberry apparently hated all the stuff we wound up loving about it.
While most people seem to like the red uniforms from the Wrath of Khan and the rest of the TOS movies, I still prefer the original uniforms from the original series, as well as the ship look. The TMP uniforms seemed to be copied from Space 1999. Every time I see a promo for Space 1999, I briefly think that Paramount actually did go through with a Star Trek Phase 2 series.
So perhaps they had already passed the uniform designing stage when they scrapped the phase 2 project, but they don't want to waste the already produced ones so TMP had the unfortunate “honor” to bear these pajamas?
The only TMP uniform that looks good is Admiral Kirk's (IMO). The monster maroon is a beautiful uniform. As far as TNG is concerned, their uniforms did not get better until season 4. Captain Picard's however, with the jacket, was the only that I really liked. But hey, we all have our own ideas as to what looks good and what does not. Live long and prosper 🖖
I'm one of the few people that LOVE the TMP style uniforms. Also the red ones of course. In TMP as well as in early TNG there was a heavy influence of Roddenberry's actual vision on many levels.
I liked the style of the red uniforms, but it would have been better if they had been colored in red, gold, and blue. Someone actually took a picture with Kirk and his crew wearing the red uniform, and swapped the colors so that instead of them being red, they were red, blue, and gold.
In addition, combadges came into use sometime in the first half of the 24th century, since we see Lt. Castillo on the Enterprise-C use his in "Yesterday's Enterprise." According to the Star Trek Chronology, the oval-shaped delta combadges came into use in 2347, since we saw the Jack Crusher hologram in his "Family" message to Wesley wearing one (he'd made it when Wesley was an infant). He wasn't wearing the belt either, probably because the Starfleet emblem on its buckle was outdated by that time.
I have a quick question. I was watching City on the Edge of Forever this evening and was reminded that Sulu, and Spock, both wore blue eye shadow. Was that a Starfleet requirement? 😁
Would you be able to do some informational videos on the Son'a ships? This is because I have recently become curious about those ships after I re-watched ST: Insurrection. Anyway, thanks for the great video, I really appreciate the thoroughness of your content. Keep up the great work :)
IMO the wrath of khan and the first contact/Late DS9 uniform is the best looking, I hate most of the TOS ones you can see there something made in the 70s/80s, I’m also not a fan of the Enterprise jumpsuit look they just look like mechanics even the captain.
Holy hell Starfleet has a real identity issue with so many changing uniforms. I'm glad they dropped the TMP version after the movie. Those were awful. I wish from TNG on they would have just kept the monster maroons. Picard and Sisko would look deadly in those. Next? The 30 or so various uniforms of the TNG/DS9/VOY era.
The reason why the uniforms were changed is that they were simply uncomfortable for the cast to wear. The cast protested by saying they will not to return until they changed the uniforms. In response, the monster maroon (as they were called) was created to replace what they wore in TMP.
@@GrnArrow092 Well aware for the TMP ones. But after the TOS movie era there's been like 6 separate Admiral uniforms up to DS9/Voyager. Plus 5 separate regular duty uniforms (early TNG, the unisex skirt, TNG late, DS9 early, First Contact/DS9) in the span of like 35 years in universe. To say nothing of Picard's jacket variant, or the First contact vest we see both Picard and Sisko wearing. Or the various dress uniform variants. I'm going to say about 5. Plus the several varieties of cadet uniforms throughout TNG and DS9. It's like series runners just couldn't decide what Starfleet officers should wear from one season to the next. Like they were never really satisfied with any of the uniforms for Starfleet. I've never found them to be that well thought out, myself. Except maybe the Maroons. But maybe that's why I like them so much. Surrounded by so much meh, a good design might look great.
I always thought Kirk's gray and white admiral uniform looked sharp as hell. it still looks good today lol at that picture of Captain Decker since I think later in life the actor got into some kind of trouble for being a perv
The 2270s-2350s uniforms were the sharpest looking. I think they should have kept them as dress uniforms once they changed to the one piece design in the 2370s. The "Enterprise" uniforms seem to me to be the most practical for daily wear on starships and starbases.
Most number of uniform non-uniformities has to be Valeris. Wearing standard officers jacket with trainee/cadet undershirt, and Lt Commander rank pin. She did have the science division department color in her tab - that was not the function that she served during her time on Enterprise A.
I always thought the round and oval (pips and squeaks) pins on TWOK era were different from what you stated. Round was 5 years of service, round with a Delta Shield in the center was 10 years of service and ovals were commendations. To be arranged at the wearer's discretion?
My favorite uniform ever would have to be the TWOK era ones. I wouldn’t personally wear the normal uniform out anywhere, but I’d wear the bomber jacket all the time if I could.

TMP uniforms were awful, except for the Admiral's attire, but I wasn't very impressed by the Enterprise C era uniforms either. Just doesn't look right without the turtleneck undershirt. (Personally, I think it was laziness at not coming up with a better idea for a transitional uniform)
The Enterprise C uniform had no under shirt, or belt, some had no Federation pin either. Just half dressed. " Got no time for my shirt, belt, or insignia pin. Just gotta get to the bridge !!!".
(@ about 2:30) it should say, “In practice, it won’t do you any good if you get stuck in a transporter accident.” Yeah, and that’s why Dr. “Bones” McCoy always preferred a shuttlecraft! 🤣
I think that this rather came down to the budgetary restraints TNG producers were experiencing. I would personally retcon this. Also, do you remember the TNG episode where Geordi got stuck on the barren, dark, damp, windy planet with the marooned Romulan? It was a great episode overall; however, when La Forge and his away team beamed down there straight into the goddamned blizzard, they wore just regular uniforms and the only "special" equipment they were given, apart from the regular tricorder and type 2 phaser, was that pathetic, impractical light torch one HAS to hold in their hand. No goggles with the possibility of night and heat visions, no mask to prevent the dirt and dust flying right into one's mouth and which would also serve for comm so that they wouldn't have to yell at one another in the thunderous storm, which they actually did on the episode. Simply pathetic. They did not have money for basically anything. Also, I always hated on TNG how often they used Data for certain tasks, such as clearing out rubble and heavy boulders from collapsed ceilings, which always made me think of how screwed the crew would have been if he was not there and how CONTINUOUSLY screwed crews of other starships are, because they did not have their own "Data" since he was one of a kind. Why did they not use other less advanced, non-sentient androids or robots for such situations? Why did they not use some simple exo-suits to increase their strength? Why did they not use some handheld tractor beam devices like the one Wesley invented for his school project in S1E3? BLOODY HELL!!! PLEASE give them some goddamned equipment!! Retcon! Retcon!! RETCON!!!
i'm an army veteran. to this day, I love looking at various uniforms. I like the wrap-around types, but I love the twok era maroon uniforms. comic books showed extra variety. fer example, a couple different types of twok era wrap around uniforms, dc comics ashes of eden graphic novel showed two kinds of formal dress uniforms and a wrap around. in the mirror universe saga graphic novel were many more twok era uniforms, including a wrap around, prison guard armor, marine corps armor; and on star trek film of gods and men, by 2406, uhura was wearing a new optional style. the actor who played neelix was wearing an enlisted nco olive drab uniform. I intend some of my projects to be Starfleet uniform guides of both canon n non canon uniforms, even those non can uniforms of my design. fer example, the tng era uniforms seen on yesterdays enterprise, in my continuity, are the standard class-a uniforms of Starfleet maco/marine corps.
Trek has always been good at reusing stuff like the Epsilon 9 station reuse can be seen in this video. Those were a lot of uniforms in TMP. do you know if they were ever repurposed for use in later films or shows? Mr. Triangulum do you personally own or have you ever tried to acquire anything from the films or shows? uniform, prop, script or anything?
Only the Medical and Engineering Uni's were reused... And no I have not... Though I love the props, scripts, etc, I just havent really had an opportunity...
I wish they would have used Discovery's Captain Pike style uniform for The Motion Picture only uniform I like from that movie was Admiral Kirk but I love Star Trek II uniforms but should have been the dress uniform not standard.
the starfleet marines or security should still be wearing body armour infact it should be full head to foot proteciton with a body shield giving two levels of proteciton from a full array of tacticle and evironmental threats all crew should have a body shield which could be fill wit it's own atmosphere to protect from the vacum of space or simpley for the crew that dont beread air they would not have to wear environmental gear and magneticboots so they dont get sucked in to space think of how low starfleets casultys would be after each conflict or ships environmental and decompression disaster they have had. just something i though was missing from starfleets standed survival and tacticle equipment for there crew and marines
Funny how the shortest lived uniforms were tos (not counting Cage Pike era), TMP and TNG, especially considering tng change s3, though I'm not sure what year tng s1 uniforms were introduced. I like to think early ds9, Voy uniforms always coexisted with tng style. I assume Pike Cage style lasted a few decades from April or earlier through tos s1 wnmhgb
I find conflicting info on the pips and squeaks. As stated here the 1 and 5 years respectively, but that ignores the delta pips. I tend to favor the pips and delta pips as 5 and 10 years respectively [no 1 yr, you round down], and squeaks are commendations. But I dunno.
I have no idea why EVERYTHING in the 70’s was brown or beige -_- Fun fact the warp core in this film was redressed for voyager The best dress uniform is the insurrection white one
I didnt forget it, I said the uniform would have slight variations over it's lifetime... Besides we NEVER saw him on duty, he might have just made that video NOT wearing the belt....
The keep talking about officers. Are they saying there were no enlisted on starships? I thought they had enlisted because officers can't run a ship on their own.
It seems fair to say that no one (cast or audience) liked the TMP uniforms. To me, they made everyone look like members of some weird commune. Wouldn’t surprise me if Paramount wanted to distance themselves as far as possible from that design, in favor of a sci-fi variant on 18th/19th century European militaries.
In the TNG Episode "Cause and Effect" Captain Bateson of the USS Bozeman was wearing the new red uniform and he thought the year was 2276. Something I once heard from my Great Aunt Rose lol

The Enterprise C uniform had no under shirt, or belt, some had no Federation pin either. Just half dressed. " Got no time for my shirt, belt, or insignia pin. Just gotta get to the bridge !!!".
Les put a star fleet delta on the security helmets of the red shirts just to help the Klingons so they know where to aim firing their disrupters.
(@ about 2:30) it should say, “In practice, it won’t do you any good if you get stuck in a transporter accident.” Yeah, and that’s why Dr. “Bones” McCoy always preferred a shuttlecraft! 🤣
One thing 2350 and newer starfleet uniforms should of kept the security armor and security helment.
Yes Im surprised they didnt!
Retcon! Retcon!! RETCON!!!
I liked the uniforms from the original series especially the women's uniforms
i'm an army veteran. to this day, I love looking at various uniforms.
See pockets are not old fashioned. They are pratical
LOL Indeed they are! :)
the starfleet marines or security should still be wearing body armour infact it should be full head to foot proteciton with a body shield giving two levels of proteciton from a full array of tacticle and evironmental threats all crew should have a body shield which could be fill wit it's own atmosphere to protect from the vacum of space or simpley for the crew that dont beread air they would not have to wear environmental gear and magneticboots so they dont get sucked in to space think of how low starfleets casultys would be after each conflict or ships environmental and decompression disaster they have had. just something i though was missing from starfleets standed survival and tacticle equipment for there crew and marines
You giving me a good idea we should just reboot the whole franchise.
Starfleet Marine corps should be brown or green depending on the the decade.
The Wrath Of Khan era uniforms were the best!
Star Trek 2 had the best uniforms follow by late season DS9 and First Contact
Funny how the shortest lived uniforms were tos (not counting Cage Pike era), TMP and TNG, especially considering tng change s3, though I'm not sure what year tng s1 uniforms were introduced.
I like to think early ds9, Voy uniforms always coexisted with tng style.
I assume Pike Cage style lasted a few decades from April or earlier through tos s1 wnmhgb
Wish they had kept tos div colors for twok era shirts, highlights, plus maybe another color or 2
I find conflicting info on the pips and squeaks. As stated here the 1 and 5 years respectively, but that ignores the delta pips. I tend to favor the pips and delta pips as 5 and 10 years respectively [no 1 yr, you round down], and squeaks are commendations. But I dunno.
5:13 Seems like someone wishes to say hello.
I think he's ready to salute you! :P
Still got my STNG lieutenant's uniform I got back in the 90s. It still fits., erm I meant to say probably still fits. Another great watch.
Niiiice! And thank you!
I have no idea why EVERYTHING in the 70’s was brown or beige -_-
Fun fact the warp core in this film was redressed for voyager
The best dress uniform is the insurrection white one
It was a boring time, either you were funky (Flashy) or a flunky (Boring Beiges) :)
TriAngulum Audio Studios i don’t hate the tunic style uniforms
Well maybe we should slingshot around a star and dress you up then!
TriAngulum Audio Studios let’s not I detest heat as it is lol and those old uniforms look very thermal
Well there goes MY dreams... :(
You forgot the beltless Jack Crusher variant.
I didnt forget it, I said the uniform would have slight variations over it's lifetime... Besides we NEVER saw him on duty, he might have just made that video NOT wearing the belt....
Fair point.
Thank you!
Gotta love the lack of dance belts boyz
LOL I know right? :P
Great and very informative video as usual. Would you however consider switching the "thank you patreons" intro music to something more uplifting?
Thank you so much! And yes it's actually being re-worked just havent found the right music yet :) But thank you for the suggestion! :)
I know I am in the extreme minority, but I actually like the STTMP grey-tan uniforms better than the maroon jacket uniforms seen in the later films.
it's the 23rd century and nobody thought of inventing personal shields
I know right?
Or maintenance/cleaning robots, or anti-aging treatments, or weight-loss pills...or fuses or seatbelts.
@@twogungunnar9456 it took a crazy romulan and a a overpowered ship to Make starfleet install seatbelts into their ships
any idea when part 3 of the uniform series will be up?
soon!
When are you gonna cover the Starfleet uniforms from TNG,DS9 and Voyager?
In a few weeks or so!
So hard to make the 80s outfits look good if you have a gut lol (believe me, I know).
I can't help but laugh at the body armor and how ridiculous it looks. It looks more suited for football than for security detail.
I know right?
STTMP uniforms were like Space 1999 uniforms.
Landing party!
4:57 err was it the director's intention to have the lady with no pants and a minidress on walk over a mirrored floor or was he just not thinking?
shingshongshamalama oh... He was thinking ;)
LOL
Did anyone catch the Traveler in the background?
In the TNG Episode "Cause and Effect" Captain Bateson of the USS Bozeman was wearing the new red uniform and he thought the year was 2276. Something I once heard from my Great Aunt Rose lol
Im sorry you and your aunt are incorrect... It was 2278 not 2276... Please see memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/USS_Bozeman :)
Hated the monster maroon’s, give me the three division colors....gold, blue, red.
So old school :P
Cool
Thank you my friend :)
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios What is your fav design, personnaly i prefer FC/DS9 Science Design
Mine is First Contact ALL the WAY!
TMP 2 to 6 were the best and comfortable ,
Why don’t they have an “Able Spaceman” rank?
The red uniform
This 5:28 is where it begins
Here
So interesting, thank you.
So many uniform changes. Maybe it's just me, but there's something rather Frank N Furter with Kirk in his landing party jacket with the ribbed collar. 😁
LOL Im just a sweet Transvestite! :P
