    I just love that close up footage of the engines. You see those turbines speed up, and at precisely 1:46 that awesome P&W growl kicks in. An engine developed for the 747 in the sixties, giving Boeing a headache from the get go, until they helped iron out the kinks and make this engine solid and reliable. Couldn't imagine these oldies run anything else..

    Fantastic video! I'll always remember the first time I saw (and heard) a 747-100 taking off at JFK New York in early 1970. My father and I were watching from the observation deck of the control tower. As it was waiting on line for takeoff it literally looked twice the size of all the other airliners around it. After it rotated I heard somebody say, "Holy cow, it's flying!" And those JT-9 engines. The buzzsaw sound was an octave lower than the JT-3s that powered the 707 and the DC-8. It blew me away, and still does. Long live the queen!

    Dramatic footage from an experienced camera operator with a keen eye for outstanding technical details. A high-quality lens. In 1994 I flew around the world on behalf of an aluminum company which makes 70% of the air-cargo container market. I filmed at LAX, Heathrow, and Gatwick in England, at Changi Airport Singapore, Brisbane, Copenhagen and Arlanda. Thank you from Oslo.

    This is pure music to my ears love it Simon Lowe, many thanks for making this video and uploading it, a friend of mine from my Boeing 747 Community posted it and I did give you credit to this master piece.
    Would be amazing if a B747-100 was fully renovated for PAX Flights just so us fans can relive how it was to fly on a true classic like this B747-123 which was first operated by American Airlines in April of 1971 and flown for PAX flights til 1976 it was converted to a freighter and flown for AA til August 1984 til United Parcel Service took it over and in July of 2003 Kalitta Air took the owner ship of this old relic, this aircraft had a service lifespan of 41.3 years.
    Friendly regards Willem B., founder & owner of the Boeing 747 Community at FB :)

    Original-Most variants of B747-100, powered by Older JT9D variants sounded ditto exactly like a C5A/B. It was bcoz pw wanted 2 make an exact rival 2 the ge tf39. Both tf39 and jt9d were on a battle for the C5 galaxy empowerment program, but tf39 won the tender. But the jt9d's went 2 serve the pan am ordered 2.5x larger airplane than B707, which is the B747, as it was equally as large as the C5, due 2 which 1 could easily confuse B747 with a C5, both for size, cockpit shape and sound, except there was 1 difference in the shape of the fuselage and B747 had a conventional tail, while C5 had a t-tail, similar 2 it's smaller predecessor, the C141 Starlifter. When the noise regulations passed on in the early 70's, the later Jt9D's started sounding comparatively quieter.

    Hi Simon, quick question - having just purchased an XH-A1, I wanted to ask whether when you did your wonderful videos when you used that camcorder, you filmed used the 50i or 25f frame rate? Do you happen to remember?

    • @SimonLoweAviation
      @SimonLoweAviation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jim, I used both frame rates. 25f gave best results when published on the internet.
      50i is ok but its best to deinterlaced the footage before you upload it.
      Hope that helps.

    Amazing Simon! Could really feel the power as it spooled up, love the close up on the gear, had the sound on full blast! I do miss those days, Biman DC10, Balkan Holidays Tu154, Travel City 747-300, Cathay 747-200 Silver Bullet... just been looking back through my old vids from this time when I used to post on Flightlevel350.com, good memories. Do you still have the one from the end of 23R where the Travel City barely gets off the ground and flies immediately over your head? It was a sensation on FL350 at the time but can't see it on here?
