I got some new sunglasses to protect my eyes out on the water. They’re super polarized, block all light coming in from the sides, and they stay on my face -- plus I think they’ve got a very cool retro style. I believe you are the first 'foreigner' to have captured the city I was born and grew up in who choose to show the other, gentler side of Amsterdam. Even though I moved out 30 years ago, my family still lives there, so I still go there often. Thank you for showing the Amsterdam I love, instead of the touristic Amsterdam most original Amsterdammers have come to despise. Also thank you for showing Posthumus, one of the many unknown gems in the city center. Even though I'm a son of Amsterdam, I didn't know it existed. Now I must visit!

Oddly I never see your four sisters on the boat except in the intro, I suspect they only drop on for a music session and then go home.
In1984 I stood on a bridge over a canal in Amsterdam, the weather was warm and there was a smell from the water, I took a deep breath and I said to the girl who I was with " ah this is Canal number 5".😆

What I love about Amsterdam is that the ubiquitous bikes and pedestrians give it a very human scale and feeling. Even as a Canadian visiting, it was very easy and common to strike up a conversation with the locals (in perfect English and often initiated by them), for something as trivial as getting your bike untethered from the morass of bikes at the train stations. Through situations like these I came to learn -- as you say-- that the Dutch are nothing like the reputation that certain aspects of the city gives them. The Dutch love their herring and it was the best I ever had, both smoked and pickled.

Have just come across your site. Enjoy your low key approach and the fact filled episodes on wooden boat maintenance. I once considered buying a teak deck Choy Lee but backed away after the survey and purchased a 1968 Charlie Morgan 30 sloop that I sailed on the Chesapeake Bay for a decade. Look forward to work on MC 2.

Visited The Damage when in the Army. Only a day trip of about 48 hours and was so enamored with the style of neighborhoods, and some nightlife, that we just stayed up and slept on the way back. Y'all have such a keen eye and dignified classic style with a modern lens. Thank you for the memories.

'Buildings lean precariously from standing up too long.' OMG your use of words is soo beautiful, as is your charming, calming voice. You two are living life the way it should be done. Love your vids. I don't think I had ever been on a plane at 23. But you seem to regularly travel to Europe, from Canada! Fixing a boat for four years and studying, how did you fit that in? You have done a lot in your life, now sailing the world in such a tiny boat. You wont regret it.
Funny, weed and brothels are legal here, but its rarely mentioned, not something tourists would even know. I've skipped ahead, will have to go back and catch up your journey. Thank you soo much.

Like you I grew up in the Lower Mainland. My parents came from Norway and I go back there on a regular basis to see family. There are no direct flights to Norway from Vancouver so I usually go through Amsterdam. I usually spend a couple of days there between my flight from Vancouver and my flight to Stavanger. I enjoy exploring the city and the surrounding area. The best part of Europe is the train system. You can go almost anywhere. Happy adventures and enjoy the new year. I'm looking forward to the day when we can all travel again.

Can you believe I 1st visited Amsterdam in the 1950"s & seeing The Old Nickel Hotel 14mins into your vid brought back mixed memories of some heavy drinking nights in the city & well oiled, listening to some good jazz.As a Brit I had to do my National Service in the RAF travelling through Holland many times on my way to camps in Germany & Austria. Very Happy Memories the best being stationed in Vienna but also passing through Amsterdam on numerous occasions. When you get old, as I am nostalgia means a lot. All the very best for 2021 lets hope we get back to some semblance of normal life

I have enjoyed your show so much and I especially enjoyed this traditional view of Amsterdam. I was there and 77, so yes my memories were of the Rijksmuseum, and lace curtains everywhere! My 30 year old daughter went in high school and of course was shown some of the more colorful, touristy spots. And when I think of painters, I often think of Piet Mondrian and Rembrandt first...perhaps then, van Gogh!

Early morning coffee (or beer if you are a Brit), sat outside Café Americain in Leidseplein watching the mad rush of cars, bikes, people and trams all wanting to be in the same space at the same time and yet no carnage! Fantastic City despite the rough bits, fantastic people and such an interesting place. I must go back once the madness is over and explore more of the countryside around the City.

Another great video. Your film making technique and your story telling are really developing. We are currently overwintering in Amsterdam on our Carena 40 Make My Day. We did this last year also. Unfortunately the Covid lockdown has limited the gezeligheid drastically. This has been one of my favorite cities ever since I first visited in 1994.
By the way a small historical detail. The buildings lean forward by design. This is because they are so narrow that moving large objects upstairs is nearly impossible so they are brought through the windows in via a hoist on the gable. The lean keeps objects from banging om the front of the building.
    happy holidays

When I travelled Europe I never made to Amsterdam. I am really sad I didn't maybe next time. I adore that shop! Thankyou for sharing. If you guys start shopping for a new boat, you should take a close look at the Dragonfly 28, it seems like the perfect boat, they are wicked fast, able to handle rough seas, masts comes down without the need of a crane, lots of room, a little pricey but well worth it. We just purchased a 2020 Corsair Sport 880, kinda like the DragonFly. We sailed from our condo in Key Largo, Florida to Key West, Florida right before Christmas. We made the 94 mile trip in 5.8 hours and averaged 16.7 knots and several times reached 21.3 knots. We made $220,000 which is in line for what the Dragonfly 28 cost....

When you said you like good fries it brought back an old memory. My daughter‘s best friend in first grade was a vegetarian. For her 7th birthday she asked to go to MacDonalds. Her parents were surprised but she explained that everyone said they have the best French fries, so they went just to try the fries.
If you dated the beginning of the video with the date it was recorded it would be less of a surprise when your baking in the heat on a video released two days after Christmas.
I don’t know how long it takes you to make one of your composite music videos but I think you could get a fair number of viewers for a video that was just you as a quartet

I've visited Amsterdam several times and can honestly say that despite being a Brit, i have never been part of any antisocial behaviour that we are so infamous for! Its a reputation i so wish we could disprove but, clearly not. Each generation of big teens reinforce it year on year!!! I agree 100%. Den Bosch is an especially lovely city IMO. Maybe the best thing about the NL though is the people. I'm sure bad ones must exist but I've never come across anyone who hasn't been anything other than extremely pleasant and friendly. I'm sure that travelling about in the open air at cycling speed contributes to this. I always find it surprising how little traffic there is in towns and cities compared to the UK and most of Europe.

@@cornishhh cars are in ways discouraged in the centers of most (older and bigger) city’s, giving room to pedestrains and cyclists. Groningen is a good example, the guardian has a good story about it. Cars are only allowed through certain routes, funneled away back from the center, and not in the innermost center. What follows is that a bike is usually the handiest, or parking outside the center and walk (or bus).

Herb certainly does not envelope Amstradam Culture, agreed, for sure! Cannabis is legal here for years, (California, USA) but as in the Rastafarian Culture, permitted use of Cannabis, but in no way is required. Anyway, I love your approach to writing, creating, and narration!! never change that! your Photo-journalism, Images are absolutely stunning!

Great to escape to Amsterdam and see many of the places we’ve seen in pre covid lockdown visits! How I long to return. Love the letter writing and seals, that shop looked so intriguing, may take it up myself.

Just like you, Amsterdam is my favourite city in the world, whether it is the city centre or out in the Amsterdam East area where my father was born. Great to see it from your perspective.
