I have to agree totally with the whole viewpoint of this argument. Living confined by external forces is prison not freedom. This doesn't mean that we should ignore compassion.

Exactly! Schopenhauer would agree that absolute freedom means not letting external pressures confine us. And compassion isn’t a weakness-it’s an authentic response to suffering that deepens our humanity.

We cannot avoid the influence of external forces, since humans have to live in the world. That is not the problem. The problem is Schopenhauer's godless internal world, which admits to no purpose in life or meaning in achievements. Anyone who has such a cynical take on life is probably not living correctly. Maybe that was his essential failure. The meaning and transcendent purpose of life is easily known by most of us.

This is an excellent video. Social media is all about seeking external attention and praise. As such it frequently smells of the halls of high school. Is anyone else seeing how much unhappier people are now that technology controls our lives? On the contrary, mental health issues are at an all-time high. As long as one has reasonable and clear boundaries kindness and compassion are far more conducive to living a peaceful and happy life. I'm sick of phony "influencers" encouraging people to stop being "nice", stop being "kind", stop helping others, etc. At least 28% of all human beings are already nasty human beings, we don't need more.

Then one does for others what one believes is what one willing gives for nothing, no praise, nothing in return, silently one does!!! Don't think so. Millions of people value their achievements, and attain meaningful status in their communities. Seeing purpose as "an illusion" is certainly not an experience shared by the majority of humankind. There are many who see their purpose, fulfill it, and live in peaceful contentment. This is not at all unusual among healthy, normal persons.
Seems to me that Schopenhauer was perhaps a disturbed individual, who thought that the cosmos offered no real purpose or meaning at all. He was probably a godless man as well. Though I don't know this for sure, it would fit this philosophy.

  • @Pike840

I don't aknowledge everything in this summary - especially the parts about altruism and will.
I think that one can very well be altruistic, and still not be "living for others" or neglecting yourself.
It's possible to aspire for harmony among all; living for yourself, but still considering and acknowledging others' needs and desires.
Frankly, I think most people in societies (must) do this automatically. There's no "pure" egoism or altruism - it's all in the balance.
What comes to will in all this, is that a person who understands this, wants good things (optimally) for everyone. These concepts aren't mutually exclusive or conflicting, over a time period.

@@NexusInsight-13 "Not that Buddha is a pessimist -- as many people in the West particularly have condemned him, and in the East too. People think that Buddha is a pessimist, saying life is misery. He is not a pessimist -- not a pessimist in the same way as Arthur Schopenhauer is. Schopenhauer is a pessimist: "Life is misery and there is no way to get out of it. You have to suffer it, nothing can be done about it. Man is a helpless victim."
It is said that when Schopenhauer read Gautam Buddha's works for the first time he danced because he thought, "This enlightened man agrees with me!"
Now, no enlightened man can ever agree with those who are not enlightened; it is impossible. Either you agree with them or you don't agree with them, but they never agree with you. They cannot. How can the man who has eyes agree with the man who is blind about light? -- or about darkness even?
Remember one thing: the blind man knows nothing about darkness even, what to say about light! Because to see darkness eyes are needed. You may be thinking that blind people live in darkness -- you are totally wrong. They know nothing of darkness. Because YOU close your eyes and you feel darkness, so you think blind people must be living in darkness -- but they don't have eyes to close. And unless you know light you cannot know darkness; they are two aspects of the same coin. Eyes are needed for both.
Schopenhauer was utterly wrong -- Buddha was not agreeing with him. Of course, Buddha can be interpreted in such a way that he may look like a pessimist philosopher. He is neither a pessimist nor a philosopher. He is not even an optimist -- because pessimism and optimism both belong to the world of the blind."

We "cannot will what we will" is BS because happiness is the decision not to be unhappy, no matter what. Once one learns to dominate one's feelings an desires, pain turns from an unbearable horror to a mere annoyance that can be ignored and happiness is kind of nice from time to time but nothing worth chasing.

I think you misunderstand. People often cannot "will what they will" because subconscious and uncontrollable thoughts and desires pull them away from their goals. Their conscious will and their automated subconscious actions contradict one another. Learning to "dominate one's feelings and desires" is difficult. Just ask any recovering addict. But I DO agree that once you dominate your thoughts you gain resilience to things that others are frightened of.

      @darrylschultz9395 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

If it applies to "the masses", that would be most people. So it seems like you're saying Schopenhauer nails it. People do generally chase desires, and do find the achieving of them only briefly satisfying, with the need to pursue more desires seemingly necessary in order to obliterate the boredom that soon ensues. He was in effect proposing EckhartTolle's idea of learning to live in the Here and Now-and as that is actually the only time there is, he actually couldn't have got it more right! And what other way would work as well as solitude for gaining an insight into one's true nature? Which is what needs to be what is acted on for true fulfilment to even be possible.
