  • Our local steam show has a fun pull throughout the day where you can hook up and try your hand at the sled as many times as you like. There's no fee, no prizes and no competition, just fun. I took Herman the Oliver 1950 down for the day and hooked up several times. There's also a couple other Detroit Diesel powered Olivers from the area that showed to try their hand at it as well. Enjoy!

    I have an uncle that had one of those tractors. I believe that it was a Tenneco Company that bought some of these tractors and named them Parsons DP 100 Cable Plow that thing was a real horse. It had an offset plow that we used a 42" depth blade plowed a rip of 3" wide 42" deep. It had a hydrolic shaker that would shake the ground 100' away.
    Thanks for the video!

      If you're a Detroit man you should check out this video of a punk kid blowing up an 8v71 Detroit because it was "obsolete" and useless and he's a "professional" he actually says that. You'll be shocked at the comments. People seem to think they aren't road legal anymore due to emissions and are unsuitable for any kind of use. Just ignorance galore. It was a good engine too, ran great and you could tell how long it screamed before blowing. Took like an hour or more before it went. It was in an old GMC truck. I hope the guy shows up at a truck or tractor show someday and we'll see just how successful his video was

      Almost. We would do tractor pulls in the 1950s and early 60s. Ours would be on a concrete slab with a sled. This was at the Shiawassee County Free Fair in Michigan. They would load the sled with 100lb bags of fertilizer. We would turn the tractor tires around for better traction. That was a hassle. My grandfather wasn't too keen on all that. Especially taking a day off to jack with a couple of tractors. Those tires were heavy too. My dad won the event one year with a John Deere A. We had put a little bigger block in that 2 banger. The draw bar had certain height requirements. It was a lot of work, but fun. Too me the fun part was the tractor caravanning with the neighbors to the fair. Eaglegards...

    We farmed about 1400 acres in central Michigan near Lennon. My grandfather bought a new 1950 Oliver 4 wheel drive assist with the Detroit Diesel in 1965. I'll never forget the discussion between my dad and grandfather whether the Detroit Diesel was better or the Cummings Diesel. We pulled a 8/16 bottom Oliver plow. I'd be out in the field tagging along with the John Deere G and the 5/16 plow. We'd turn over some ground. We grew about 600 acres of corn. On the 1950 Oliver, we hooked up 2 20' harrows side by side with 2 20' drags. That Oliver could run the ground. I was drafted into the Army in 1967, sent to Vietnam by LBJ, and blown up. I have a hell of a story. Our next door neighbor, Alex Zsigo, was killed in Vietnam in June of 1967. The government did an eminent domain on about 20 acres of our family farm too. When I lived off the farm, we were right next to a private park, dirt race track, gun club and tractor pulls..
    (Small logging and farm town)
    Loved it!!! Until the city folks all moved in, literally quadrupled the population in just a few years...
    Sadly, the only tractor pull is once a year now during the parks annual fundraiser, the gun club is gone... The race track is still going, but probably not much longer 😪
    All the area farms always brought tractors in all summer long, now most have lost interest because it's only a once a year deal now...

      It never ceases to amaze me how people move to a new area and expect the locals to change to their standards. We have a drag strip that my dad raced at in the 60s that had closed years ago. A few people got together and opened it back up a few years ago, and they've been fighting in court ever since. Fortunately, our steam show has been growing every year, perhaps because it's free. No admission, no hook fees... Our parts man once told me, if someone is making money or being successful and a neighbor isn't , that neighbor will eventually cause them trouble. Maybe our show has found the loophole: don't make money!

    And a good time was had by all! Is Herman what they called an El Toro ?

    • @Romans--bo7br
      @Romans--bo7br 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      CE Smith.... No, El Toro was the name of another Oliver 1950 Series tractor (built in 1966), that had special Industrial rear axles (instead of the Row Crop axles) and also had a different front axle ratio than most 4x4 Oliver's (to compete with the Crawler tractors of the era), and was (of course) also powered with a 4-53NA Detroit Diesel. I don't know if "El Toro" is still sled pulling, or not.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a common misconception that the El Toro tractor was a 1950 with Terra Tires. In reality is was an Oliver with front wheel assist that went "south of the border", which included Mexico, Latin America and even places like New Zealand and Australia. I have a copy of an ad from Australia that shows an 1850 FWA and calls it the El Toro. I have also found an image of a Cockshutt 1650 FWA with an El Toro decal located in New Zealand. Neither of these tractors had the flotation tires, and neither have the Detroit Diesel engine. It's still a cool name, so I don't get wound up about it when someone says it is an El Toro.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They should be a good tractor overall. They use the 2-155 transaxle and the better articulation joint. There were changes, the most important one I can think of is the size of bolts that connect the transmission input to the back of the over/under unit were increased to 1/2". The earlier ones were smaller and could get loose and/or shear off. The 3208 engine seems to depend on how it was taken care of, and how hard it was worked. It's usually not to hard to find another one out of a combine or something else to repower with. I've seen a couple repowered with a C series Cummins. That takes a little work to fit the longer C in there, and the tractor is geared for an engine running 2600 rpm, so you lose some speed if you keep the C at 2200.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I pulled in 4th gear,. There was only one size of fender tank, but there were a few different light buckets. A 1650 had a single headlight, 1750 and larger had 2, the 55 series only used 1 light on all models, and there were even ones that were blank with no spots for lights. Those were used on cab tractors, as the lights would glare on the windows, so they mounted them on the front of the cab. My tanks have only 1 filler per tank, the other cap is actually a dipstick to see how full they are. This is the first set I have ever seen, they were usually only found on gas tractors, as those had a switching valve. On the gas tractors you would run on the fenders until they got low, then you would switch the valve down by your right foot to switch to the main tank.

      Hey Aaron! When your name popped up I thought I hadn't heard from you in awhile. I was going to upload a service video a few days ago, and then this video took off, and I didn't want to rock the boat. TH-cam can be interesting, if I don't upload a new video, it seems like the old ones get recommended more. I've got a bunch of footage of the 4-225 pulling a 10 bottom Oliver plow, but that's taking a bit to get edited together. I've also been rearranging the Olivers so I can make a decent video of the collection. I should have filmed that, a couple hadn't run in years.

    Isn't amazing how "Performance John Deere" could never catch up with those Olivers. Plus every one of those Olivers could be taken to the field and work 12 hours a day. Most other tractors of their era are relegated to powering grain augers or other non-hardworking jobs.

      Ok. In France we had 4.53 on Timberjack 240 I've never forgot the first time I heard it. Your old iron seems to be in good shape , good job, I hope you enjoy to work with even it's less comfortable (but less expensive) than modern equipements. Thanks for the answer and your videos.

    Hi Chris does the White 2-155 have only a 1000 PTO or can you put a 540 in it.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They were factory equipped with 1000 only, but can be converted. My 2-155 has been converted to dual speed.

    • @stephenfonder7409
      @stephenfonder7409 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is this real hard to do and is it easy to go back and forth between the two shafts. Also is it very expensive for a kit to do this.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Youll have to pull the pto unit, which is straight forward, drain the oil and take the bolts out type of thing. Finding a kit might be tough, your best bet is to find a complete dual speed out of a 2-135, 100, 120, 140, 125 or 145, they'll all bolt right in. Switching speeds is easy, take out the 4 bolts that hold the pto shield, pull the 540 shaft out and put the 1000 in, or vice versa, and bolt the shield back on and you're ready to go. If you buy a pto unit, verify it's a 2 speed by pulling the pto shaft. If there's only 1 set of splines, or the shaft refuses to come out, it's a single speed.

    • @stephenfonder7409
      @stephenfonder7409 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info. A lot of tractor manufacturers back then just though that those higher horse tractors would have no need for the 540 shafts. Today most of the high end tractors have them.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I occasionally spread fertilizer with my 2-155, but we wanted to have a backup tractor to run the feed grinder back when we had hogs. The unit is geared so you get 540 at about 1750 engine rpm, so it's also nice to not have to go full throttle just to spread fertilizer.

  • @catfish500mark9

    What's the rpm of the engine at full throttle?It sounds like you're twisting the guts out of it.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No load is around 2400 rpm. It's a 2 stroke, so it sounds twice as fast as it really is.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      2400 is what it turns wide open without a load, it's supposed to be 2600, but the governor needs adjusted. Idle speed is around 800 rpm. They are screamers, and do best at those speeds. I have a couple of videos of it plowing on my channel at the same rpm as in this video. Hearing protection is a must.
