Scunthorpe were a club who almost saw the same fate, although thankfully the club was sold a couple weeks ago. They had financial troubles, a winding up order from HMRC, unpaid staff + players, and were incredibly close to entering administration. I'm a grimsby fan and even though we are very close rivals, it would have been devastating to see them go because of what it would have meant for their community and what it meant for the town.

Scunny fan here. Grimsby fans have been class on the whole. As have so many other fans, usually of the smaller clubs, who have been supportive. We even had Derby fans come and support us at our last home game. Originally it was to support in protests, but after we got sold it was just to come for the ride, since they didn't play that day. I even know a Grimsby fan who said he would come down if the protests continued.
I do echo the Southend fans who talk about lack of media coverage, but we got even less. To the big clubs and pundits football outside the Premier League doesn't matter and we're laughed a. Carragher was almost trolling by continuously saying Everton were the worst run club in the country while us and Southend were in absolutely dire straights.

This was a great video Liam, but sadly as long as teams like Man City, Chelsea, Newcastle, and possibly Manchester United keep raking in the big bucks, no one else stands a chance.
In the early 2010s, I remember watching Sky Sports News every day after school to see what was happening with my team Portsmouth. Thankfully in 2013 the Supporters' Trust were able to buy the club, pay off the debts, and get us promoted to League One.
My heart breaks for teams like Bury, Macclesfield, Luton, Bolton, Rangers, Crawley, Portsmouth, and Southend (to name a few) who either have been liquidated or have been close to liquidation due to poor management.

Rangers have bounced back from the brink, in 10 years they went from bankrupt to beating Celtic in the 2020/21 season and very nearly winning the Europa League in 2022. That should serve as an example to all other struggling teams, it is possible to recover from these situations, there is still hope. I really hope Southend United can see this out... I don’t want them to see the same fate as Bury...

Wimbledon is another one that comes to mind. They still exist, albeit as a "phoenix" club (AFC Wimbledon), but they embrace the history of Wimbledon, unlike that other club, who I won't mention.
IIRC Darlington were mired in financial problems because of that stadium they built - they entered administration in 2003, '09 and '12 (when they were expelled from the FA). They came back to the lower leagues as Darlington 1883, won 3 promotions in 4 seasons, then the FA allowed them to change back to the old Darlington name.
I hope, for the sake of the fans, players & others associated with Southend Utd, that they can somehow survive - it would be deeply saddening to see them go the same way as other once-great clubs like Wimbledon and Bury... :/

And now Southend are on the brink and nobody cares, but they’ll come out with their declarative empty statements and tweets if Southend go out of business. I have seen so many games at Roots Hall (as well as away games) and have had some wonderful years watching them. I have taken my son and daughter to games and now take my two grandsons. We have a third grandson due any day, but I fear I will never be able to take him as I am so afraid that March 1 will be the day my club dies. The owner will not entertain outside investment, and we do not have the money to go on. Even though work took me to locate my home to other counties, my grandsons have the love for the club that I do. I fear that our last game (a last-minute win 2-1 Vs Darlington in the FA Trophy last month) will be the last we can see. I hope I am wrong. Thanks again for highlighting our plight. Just a thought. Its sad to see the state of football in the lower leagues and certainly for clubs like Bury and Southend and of course something needs to be done when it comes to how clubs are run, funded and saved. EPL has made clubs tons of money and it is a model thats made us the richest league in footy but how nothing is really being done to help lower league clubs is mind boggling....the EPL should be investing money into a pot every year to distribute or invest into lower leagues....I hope Southend are able to be saved....Freddy Eastwood's goal against MU won't ever be forgotten.

I'm a Doncaster Rovers fan. In 1997-98 season, we suffered one of the worst seasons on the pitch. However, off the pitch, we were run like crap by Ken Richardson, who masterminded an arson attack on one of our old stadium's stands, took back any previous investment and by the time we were saved by John Ryan, we had to pick players up on the way to instantly sign for Conference games, barely a functioning stadium and barely a youth program.
We've been through the same fate. We survived. But it proves that since 25 years ago, nothing has changed. New clubs, same situations. Players and staff are not paid, fans watching their club die and all the while, the media wait to grab their clicks when clubs are dead and buried and the attention is all on the top division.
I would argue that the Premier League is just a hyped-up EFL Championship. Because the money spent and earned at the top of the game, in my opinion, is criminal. Meanwhile, the Premier League seems to forget that if it wasn't for the Football League, they wouldn't have been able to develop some of the stars they have today. Harry Kane, Leyton Orient. Harry Maguire, Wigan Athletic, Hull City. Jacob Ramsay, Doncaster Rovers. Ollie Watkins, Exeter City. Emiliano Martinez, Oxford United. The list goes on.

Let the prem close it self up with the same 20 teams and eventually everyone will get bored of it
Make the championship, league one and league two the top 3 tiers again
As for the argument what about European spots
Premier league gets two champions league
First division (championship in this scenario) gets two
Same with the other European spots and both leagues can still play in the cup
I honestly believe the football league with the right people could survive without the prem for a long time as long it’s done right

Leyton Orient Supporter Here,, It saddens Me To See Southend In This Situation,, A Great Club With Fantastic Supporters,, A Club That is Vital To The Local Community.. We Faced a Similar situation With a certain Italian Owner (I Hate To Even mention His Name). Who Took Us To the Brink Of Liquidation. I Said At the Time That The EFL was useless in their help for our club,, The decision to deduct 10 points from Southend is a disgrace by the EFL, at a time when they should be helping the club and its supporters. Bolton Were Also Let Down by The ELF and as you mentioned We Sadly Lost Bury Too.. he EFL need to up their game in who they allow to own clubs and they should monitor their behavior while they in ownership Otherwise we will start seeing more clubs in peril..I sincerely wish The Staff, Players and Most of All the Supporters of Southend Success in Saving their Proud Club.. Good Luck.

Luton fan here, really understand what you are dealing with, the reality of teams like yours, can happen to anyone in the “real “ football world, Bury and Rushden & Diamonds, are examples of what can happen, if a Chairman turns out to have non football motives, or no money, or both.
Luton has a succession of these, almost disappeared, but thanks to people like you, we didn’t.
A phoenix club is a way forward, AFC Wimbledon is a good example, Macclesfield another, don’t give up.
Last thing, the lack of publicity with your plight demonstrates the “ football family “ is obsessed with the elite, as long as money, is at the centre of the game, this will never change...

HMRC bills, players (past and present) going to court over unpaid wages, electric bills not being paid and having to rely on a generator to power everything, bailiffs. You name the problem, we had it. We had a freaking turf war with the rugby club over whose land is whose and they ended up blocking the turnstiles because they believed the turnstiles belonged to them and didn’t want us using their land. All because of an owner that did not care. It was horrible and I really hope Southend get out of it because no fans deserve that. we need the 50+1 rule
fit and proper owners test needs a massive overhaul, to include more sport based questions (like, what good is an owner who knows nothing of the sport?)
whilst prolly not the PL or Championship unless FIFA impose the rules, maybe lower down, League 1/2 or National league, needs some kind of transfer and wage cap, not only keep competition but also as a way to help prevent theses situations

It's also reappearing at Elche while still in the top flight in La Liga, but with Elche having been in Segunda B or what's now the 3rd tier RFEF Primera Division A/B in 2016-17 from previous tax issues. The problem isn't a lack of funds as an Argentinian billionaire owns them, but rather that Elche has a really bad situation of being caught receiving illegal subsidies from the regional and municipal government to catapult them back up the Spanish pyramid with a set of league rules that forbid cash injections from said owner.
Edit: To make matters worse, the roster which was thought to be of midtable quality was plagued by injuries and has only now won their first game all season mired 11 points from safety. At least they beat 6th place Villarreal in to get their first win by very convincing 3-1 fashion.

This sort of thing is criminal. There is so much money sloshing around in professional football that the loss of lower league clubs need not happen if the distribution of the money went further down the leagues to those who need it most. At the moment, the money goes to and stays with the clubs that need it least. It leads to inflated premier league transfer fees and player salaries. If football fans want these old and historically important clubs to survive, the FA must be put under pressure to more equitably redistribute the cash within the game.

Great video. There should be more done, from the top-down with revenue sharing via the Prem and Championship. However, any monies shared from the Prem and Champs should be used only for paying the non-playing employees and should be extremely well regulated to make sure this is done. Afterwards, it can be used for tax settlement. This will leave more money (in theory) to pay the players.

Although Elche is a case of a league won't allow cash injections with a billionaire owner unless you have sales while constantly having a fight between local politicians giving them illegal subsidies and the government in Madrid wanting their taxes which repeatedly puts Elche further and further in arrears. If you had unlimited cash injections, you have the Deportivo La Coruna drug smuggling funded era.
