I've followed you for over 10 years and realized I don't think I've ever commented. I just wanted to let you know that I often look for recipes with "Chef John" included in my search. I've made this green bean casserole for several Thanksgivings and it's always very well received. I love your humor and have learned so much from watching you over the years! I was watching some of your videos yesterday and it dawned on me how much of a role you've played in my cooking for a long time now. So thank you! Me and my daughter used your recipe for pumpkin pie yesterday. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Every time I see a green bean casserole recipe I am reminded of the time I went with a then-boyfriend to his uncle's for Thanksgiving only to learn that no one there could cook anything more complicated than scrambled eggs and toast. So I made an entire Thanksgiving dinner for 12 by myself in someone else's kitchen with low quality equipment. At least they thawed the turkey and had purchased quality ingredients. And a cousin volunteered to help keep things tidy and wash things between dishes while I worked so that was helpful.

It's a very forgiving recipe for beginners like myself, with a huge payoff! I had to start over on my white sauce once, but learned a lot and holy crap, I would make the white sauce again, intensify the seasoning a touch, and use it as a gravy over chicken breast or porkchop. Seriously delicious. I felt so proud of myself after making this and feel encouraged to try more. Thank you, Chef John!!!

Thanks for sharing that you made this! I'm very sad this year because my life seems to be changing very quickly, my health is not what it once was! This is my second year of holidays with out my grandmother now, and somehow life just doesn't feel the same! But with new recipe's, and new decorations for Christmas, maybe it could rejuvenate me for Christmas, usually my favorite time of year! 🎄🎁☃️🎄🎁☃️🎄🎁☃️🎄🎁☃️🎄🎁☃️🎄🎁☃️🎄🎁☃️

I've made this dish or a version of it a number of times. Making it again tonight... For Christmas for traditional Americans who love the dish. They adore this recipe and request it every year; but, let me tell you something, Chef John... to get onions to look and taste that way, it is not 15 minutes. It is closer to 90... cheers!

I made this recipe yesterday and it came out AMAZING! On your blog you recommend sherry vinegar but since I didn't have any I poured a splash of dry white wine onto the onions and it was divine. The whole recipe was heavenly. Thanks so much, from me and from the lunch guests I hosted.

I was inspired by your recipe. Made it slightly non dairy & tweaked for my restrictions. Made the butter roux with unsweetened almond milk, added sauteed 🍄🍄's & used a vegan shredded cheese.
    Came out bomb-tastic. Ty Sir!!!

if i don`t make mine the same every time i will hear about it fam .church.friend`s, my secrete i use fresh green beans smoked ham and jimmy dean spicy sausage cooked like ground beef french's onions and McCormick sausage flavored country gravy it will make your tongue slap your brain`s out and build this dish deep not 2,3 make sure it`s almost 4 1/2 to 5 inches deep this is best cooked for a long time say your usual cook time is 45 min at 400 try 1 3/4 hour at300 take it out set the oven to 400/ 424 after once preheated put the french's onions on and cook until the onions turn almost brown i call it my mountain man G B C the third year i made um for a church thing that was it the ladies that run our kitchen got a little upset about my famed casserole there was not a bite left of mine but one of the ladies still had half of her`s left i've enjoyed my well you could say my unsolicited celebrity

cook your fresh green beans with your 1/2 inch cubed smoked ham make sure to drain as much water off as you can you want it thick so make your gravy thick just use less water mix it all together and slow cook it till the end turn it up ad your French`s onions when they start to brown take it out sit it on a pie rack let it cool for just a bit enjoy.............

My daughter loves green bean casserole, and I certain yours is the best version, as I've tried many of your recipes, but the rest of us aren't much for green beans, our family has a broccoli casserole that is out of this world, to the point of jumping from this family's must have holiday dishes into others holiday repertoires. It is a most requested recipe this time of year. ; )

Just read your ingredient list and will try this recipe with your suggestion: One small change I would make next time, and that I’ve added to the ingredients list, is a small splash of sherry vinegar added to the onion mixture. As you hardcore foodwishers know, that is the secret ingredient in our famous French onion soup recipe, and I believe it would have better balanced out the sweetness of the dish.
