- Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson has said she was left "shocked" and "angered" after OpenAI launched a chatbot with an "eerily similar" voice to her own.
The actress said she had previously turned down an approach by the company to voice its new chatbot, which reads text aloud to users.
When the new model debuted last week commentators were quick to draw comparisons between the chatbot's "Sky" voice and Johansson's in the 2013 film Her.
OpenAI said on Monday that it would remove the voice, but insisted that it was not meant to be an "imitation" of the star.

It doesn't sound like her to me.
Even if it did, why should similarity be a problem? Is Scarlet the only person in history to have had this voice?

Voice actor can easily imitate Scarlett Johansson voice
@@user-vj5ml8hy8m Yes, WTF. Every voice is unique dude.
@@constantinosbou that means that, since this isn't her voice, it should be okay to use (by applying your logic)
Does not sound the same at all.
Sounds extremely similar.
Don't be delulu. It's extremely similar
Don't be delusional, it sounds pretty darn close. That doesn't mean that they are in the right or in the wrong here, but it's objectively insanely similar to her voice. Don't cope.
Not the same voice.

@@zenaku4 People know that it is fake instantly, there have been photoshopped pictures of celebrities for years and no one has freaked out, because it is obvious they are fake.
Your missing the point. They offered her the job. Sam Altman tweeted 'her', a role she played an Ai voice bot. So when they couldn't get Johansson they hired a voice actor who could impersonate her.
@@apzzpa today I saw a show where they made a parody of the Google AI woman being too horny.
They had a woman with a similar voice that was using the same intonation.
It was very similar.
And it is evident they were inspired from the movie Her. But since Scarlet doesn't own a patent for the sexy women robot voice, I don't think she deserves any recompense.
Google is a very rich company and because of that it the most sued company in the world.
Almost everyone who have the smallest pretext try their luck.
@@markmd9 I disagree. They asked her to do the job and Altman tweeted 'her', a film she played the AI chatbot. It's very clear they wanted her voice for it regardless of lack of consent. The fact people are finding similarities speaks volumes and if I was Johansson I would be suing. I think she has full right to because there needs to regulation around AI otherwise it could lead to problems that do not exist yet will only add to our current problems.
Their a corporation with plenty of money and resources. They can get someone else and they need to be regulated.
Not a fan on AI or ms Johansen, but it seems a voice similarity is a bit of an overreach intended or not.
I do not believe Sam Altman. He posted "her" which is the name of the movie Scarlet was in. Very fishy!
Yeah. I think it’s pretty obvious that he took inspiration from that movie for ChatGPT, but that alone is neither dubious nor illegal. It’s clear that the two voices might sound similar but are very obviously distinct from one another. They hired a voice actress to voice the model, and she spoke in her natural speaking voice. I just don’t see a case here for Johansson‘s team
@@EchoMountain47 her case may be - I need more public attention.
Yes. In the sense of being inspired by one of the most classical AI chatbots in cinema.
That's about it.

This report isn’t entirely accurate. The original SKY voice in GPT app prior to last week defo sounded like Scarlett. The voice was enhanced to create more emotion for GPT-4o. At this time Altman reached out to SJ for use age permission and she declined. He used it anyway. SJs people finally released a statement for max exposure after the 4o demo. Immediately GPT paused the voice and changed the underlying vocal traits.
OMG, It's probably the past Watch Mojo lady, don't think she's on there anymore.
ChatGPT doesn't even sound like Scarlett Johansson's voice and I say this as someone who is a fan of Scarlett and watch a lot of her movies.
Yeah. I’ve been using the Sky voice since it came out however many months ago. I do not hear the similarity. I will say, the new voice I’ve heard in the GPT 4o demos could sound a little more similar to Johansson, but it’s obviously not a mimic or clone. I think this whole thing is way overblown
Everything in the world isnt about you Scarlett.
Amen!
No, it's about everyone that is having their intelectual work stolen, to serve as a base for Chatgpt's training.
If they had a voice model train it, they could easily use the voice model to testify and prove it wasn't Scarlet....
I would absolutely not have thought that was Scarlett Johansson's voice.
some similarities in that voice
The voice sounds like millions upon millions of other young women. As many stars drift off into the world of the entitled personality they become precious. I'd like to hope she would instead draw attention to world events.
It's her voice, it's not even been tweaked that much.
They probably based it off her role in that Joaquin Phoenix film .
Like a 100 million people hasve a voice similar to Scarlet. WTF?!
Now we can all be an snl weekend update anchor who bought a boat in New York with that one guy on crack.
Such non sense! There are millions of other people sounded just like her. OpenAI should keep the Sky voice and not let her bullied the tech industries.
That dude is so creepy. How are these guys given so much power is what I wanna know!??
Creepy?
What you mean by given? He is not some random guy, he is the CEO
@@Valentininia There is no regulation in place to control AI developments whatsoever! Every other industry is regulated. Think what the food industry would get up to without regulation. That equals power to do whatever they want without having to consider consequences. The only thing these creeps care about is profit and their own inflated ego
Just now I tried to ask SKy, and I foundout here voice has been changed. I asked here about the case of Scarlett threatening to sue OpenIA for using here voice, but sky didn't responde and kept thinking.
Sounds identical!
The Voice of Sky is not a new feature; it has been available for about a year. Have you tried it recently on your device? Do you think the Sky on GPT-4o is the same as shown in the advertisements? In my experience, the answer is no. The Sky sound on our devices does not even match what is advertised. So, which sound of Sky exactly?
By the way, it doesn't seem the same to me.
Apart from the AI aspect, will anyone who sounds like her be sued if they make a public speech?
I’m wondering this too! The Sky voice I’ve been using for the past eight months sounds nothing like Johansson nor the new voice in the new product they have been previewing. I feel like wires got crossed somewhere and it’s unfair they’ve disabled the original Sky voice that seems to have nothing to do with this. It wouldn’t be a big deal if any of the other voices were remotely as good, but I really can’t stand any of them
When she made that movie over 10 years ago, I bet she had no idea that in a decade, it would come true!
seems like she should have cashed in if they were going to use it anyway
The AI has a similar cadence and slight husk at the beginning and end of the words but Scarlett's voice isn't as "light" and bright as the AI. Scarlett has a a bridged earthy quality to her voice.
Being a friend of hers, it does sound like her.
Sounds like everyone's mommy
How can you create a unique voice with 8 billion people? Ignorance has roots going deep down to hell.
hell dont exist , is just a story told to you
ChatGPT sounds better
How are some people in the comments not hearing how similar the voice is? If I heard it I would instantly think it was her. And the fact that the job had been offered to her.
The flirty style is similar, but does not sound the same
Sounds the same. The AI version is just pitched a bit higher so that it sounds brighter. I suspect all those denying this in the comments are simply AI fanboys. Chatbot developers are basically content thieves writ large, so it is no surprise that they didn't take no for an answer. They chose to take, instead. As if they had a natural right. Brave new world, that has mostly unemployed people in it.
Fanboys or not, none of that tribal BS is useful in talking through this. Let’s just focus on what we know. One of the things OpenAI has stated is that they hired a voice actor who spoke in her own natural speaking voice. I’m inclined to believe that not because I think Sam Altman is the most trustworthy individual but because it’s a pretty easy thing to verify either way. I imagine if OpenAI provides Johansson’s team with evidence of signed contracts and perhaps audio recordings of the actor recording her parts, it would be pretty easy to prove that they didn’t somehow hijack Scarlett Johansson‘s voice to create the model. That’s just the legal piece, though, which I think OpenAI will clear pretty easily. It’s an open argument though as to the PR ramifications, because they definitely didn’t handle this like they should have
@@EchoMountain47 agree. And it's not uncommon for companies to hire sound-alikes. If OpenAI had gone straight for that option, there would be no story. But they approached Johansson, first, which is why their subsequent actions are suspicious and characterised as infringement or potentially theft.
So cringe not just stealing her voice, but flirting with that AI on stage for half an hour with horrible dad jokes.
He programmed a fake woman to laugh at his bad jokes
Everyone is entitled to their opinion on the matter, but nobody is entitled to spread misinformation. They did not “steal” her voice. They hired a voice actress who used her own natural speaking voice. Frankly, while I can hear some similarities, I think the two voices sound obviously different. If we are going to start faulting people just because they’re normal voices happen to sound similar to celebrities, that opens a really bad can of worms. Do we really want that?
So she thinks she can copyright someone else's voice if it sounds similar to hers? (barely)
I think this is how they did the kate bench video
Lol. The similarity is so small. I wouldn't have even thought of Scarlet had been not being sayijg inspired by Her, its scarlet.
If anything, she should have felt flatrered and if it were a matrer of compensation, i know OpenAi could have settled that since they have already claimed to having tried to do so.
Dear Mr Altman, who is this person with the voice that sounds just like Scarlett Johansson? That would be an interesting story.
Name the AI... Jo - Janson 😂
Scarlett has the power! They have already taken the voice down!
Publicity stunt! does not sound like 'Her' at all.
Even if i was to bother with using an ai assistant i wouldnt want to to sound uncannily real. If you're gonna have a robot assistant at least make it sound like Glados or C3PO or something
oh this is that "fuck you lady"? what a chad 😀
A Hollywood "actress" upset about "Artificial Intelligence"....... 😂🤣
Scarlett Johansson expressed shock and anger after OpenAI launched an AI chatbot called "Sky" with a voice that sounded eerily similar to hers, despite her previously declining to voice the chatbot herself.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the similarity but claimed the voice belonged to a different professional actress and was not intended to imitate Johansson.
Johansson stated that when she heard Sky's voice, she was "shocked, angered and in disbelief" as her friends, family and the public could not distinguish it from her own voice.
She accused Altman of insinuating the similarity was intentional by referencing the 2013 film "Her" where Johansson voiced an AI assistant.
Johansson has hired legal counsel to inquire about the process of creating Sky's voice.
OpenAI unveiled its new AI model GPT-4o last week with audio capabilities, allowing users to speak to the chatbot and receive real-time responses.
However, following Johansson's statement, OpenAI has paused using Sky's voice "out of respect" for the actress.
Thats the voice from sims 4 hahahaha
She might have been the inspiration but that definitely does not sound like her
Funny, I thought it sounded eerily similar to her voice. Not identical, but enough to say that it sounds like her, and considering they contacted her, proposing she be the voice... well, I think the proof is in the pudding.
I wonder what are the chances that she hadn't even listen to the voice herself ? 🧐
Cuz Sky's voice is really different, especially the tonality
Chatgpt 4o is really brilliant, apart from the really cringeworthy voice. Thankfully OpenAi are replacing it. Exit Stepford wife imitation stage right.
Just pay her millions and get her to sign. You'll make back the money with the amount of people who'll start using chatgpt chat just to feel like they are communicating with her.
"HER" 2013
Its actually me. It's my voice.

As long as they dont use AI to give us the V fingers
A chatbot is not human
Don’t tell her about the deep fake porn that’s knocking about.
so if the bot just so happens to sound like me and the thousands, maybe even millions of others that probably do as well, can we sue them?
OpenAI is anything but ethical, but that just doesn't sound the same. But another reason why AI companies should be required to be transparent about their training data (without exception).
It’s same just 0.2 m sec slower😂
The voice is not even close. What is she even talking about?
Money bro money
how else will bbc make news?
She is certainly a litigious actress. Interesting argument to be sure. I could see the “her” bit having merit though
I thought this immediately. It’s really creepy they did that.
Hopefully chatgpt wins the case to set the precedent for AI rights..lol
They clearly knew what they were doing, and now are acting coy trying to gain public goodwill. And looking through the comments, it seems to be working.
They pulled it because they realized there was discoverable proof they copied her voice.
1:42 Who would believe that?
The voice doesnt even sound that similar
@@jadenrea980 The way of speaking, intonation etc. does.
I personally don’t think the voices sound similar, but admittedly I’m not super familiar with Scarlett Johansson‘s work. I’ve only heard snippets. That said, her team would have to prove that there was intent to clone or mimic her likeness, and this clearly isn’t that. It’s not illegal to take inspiration from something. I think Sam is kind of stumbling in trying to deny there’s any inspiration from her voice or the movie, though. It’s clear there was, both because he invited her to participate in building the model and because of his tweets about his love for the film. I just don’t think any of those things prove wrongdoing
@@EchoMountain47 Altman contacted Johansson and asked for permission to use her voice. Johansson refused, but Altman found a similar voice and made the intonation as close as possible to Johansson's, particularly her role in the film "Her".
@@ordinarryalien the first three points you made are indeed what we know publicly so far. The fourth is your own unsubstantiated claim. The company has gone on the record saying the actress used her natural speaking voice. The burden of proof would be on Johansson’s team to prove otherwise
I would sign a petition robots aren’t ai but this doesn’t seem like law or petition stuff

So, isn’t covered under parody laws? If not, it would present precedent for folks that do impressions? Seems a thin line 🤷🏾♂️
This is not presented nor advertised as parody. It would be hard to convince a jury that this is parody. Some magazines used to put a big label “this is a parody” to avoid “libel” law suits when they made horrible fake ads about public figures. (The most famous case was a parody fake ad claiming Jerry Falwell’s first time was with his mother in an outhouse - as a parody of the beer commercial “you never forget your first girl.”) Nowadays everything is on the internet and no one bothers with putting parody labels. Also long time ago some company made radio ads using an impression of Woody Allen. They lost the law suit. Otherwise there would be many radio ads using impressions of Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Robert Dinero, Robin Williams, Clint Eastwood, etc. “Make my day… buy my product.” Also the law takes into consideration factors such as “freedom of expression” “newsworthiness” “political satire.” It’s difficult to defend when it is solely for financial gain (which is the case in chat gpt and the radio ads I mentioned.)
