2 years for gang rape??? In Australia they'd be gone for decades. That's the problem. The laws are't strict enough. It's a patriarchal problem. Disgusting.

Australia’s legal system is a bit better, but not by much. It’s a case close to me, but there was a p*do charged with 6 counts of SAing girls under the age of 10, and he got 100 hours community service. That’s it. It’s ridiculous. There’s no justice, not properly.

This is because she was caught engaging in prostitution. The punishment for prostitution is too light. Korea is a place where desire is suppressed due to strong Confucianism, but in the women's generation community, women in their 30s are having sexual relations with middle and high school students. The female director of a dermatology hospital hires female employees in their 20s to make money. They hire people to eng*ge in prostitution.

I'm a high school girl in Korea.
First of all, I'm truly, sincerely grateful that bbc brought this up because If I raise questions about these kinds of issues at school, I'm branded a thumping piggy feminist, an "emotional disorder."
I shed tears of unknown reason when I saw comments from foreigners who said they would listen to this and stand in solidarity. Thank you very much.
When this incident broke out, Korea was quiet. When Room N broke out (a case in which 260,000 Korean men watched a video clip in which a caterpillar was placed on a video device sexually assaulting elementary, middle, and high school and adult women my age), Korean men exaggerated the incident, saying that the actual sexual assault rate would be reduced only when the victims watched such videos as "enjoyed" because they wanted to. The mastermind of this nightmare was sentenced to 40 years in prison, and the person who disclosed their personal information about the criminals in anger was sentenced to two years in prison.
Three years later, just yesterday, a group of male students from Seoul National University, the nation's most prestigious university, posted illegal compounds of 60 women from their alumni and enjoyed watching them in more than 200 chat rooms. Another man from a prestigious medical school killed his girlfriend, who told him to break up at the same school.
Even though women are being sexually assaulted and killed every day in this land, the media keeps silent about the demonstration of a female nursery teacher who has no motherhood, and Korean men treat me as if it is the only big deal. It is a sense of victimization. Women also enjoy watching children's play, but they cover up the case, saying, "Isn't it the female version of Room N?" I cannot comment on these issues at school. That is why I desperately need your attention and solidarity. please Don't believe what they say in K-drama. I hope women take care of yourself and stay safe.

i used to really like kpop from 2009 - 2013/4, just grew old but still dapping every now and then. it wasn't a surprised for me when i heard about this scandal and their prison terms. even cases of murder or pedophile, the perpetrator got no more than 10 yrs - like for a nobody person. i feel like the reason the sentence is so low is because of the politicians in their national assembly, they probably did it too so they also don't want a harsh sentence so that's probably why they wrote the law that way.

I already knew there are huge societal issues in South Korea, especially regarding women's rights and how male offenders are never punished, but I think that of this documentary, I find the lack of judicial action and protection even more disgusting and distressing than what these women have had to suffer and will have to keep enduring without a reform of the law.

Rather it involves the procedure how Korea became a developed country. Back then Korean government committed severe human rights violations(representing event was 1987 June Democratic Struggle when students protested against tyranny of Chun Doohwan). As Korea become democratic, because of such horrific experience of violation, legitimation had to be strict on human rights and the basic laws became fixed until today. The population was high until 1990s so it didn’t really influence the legitimation of basic foundation of law.
