Its called 'gabi' here in the philippines. We put in our sour soup called 'sinigang' made with pork or fish.Sometimes we eat it also as a snack, just like sweet potato. I think it's part of the yam family.

    Hey Maangchi and everyone!
While my last shopping tour in Asia Supermarket I had a biiig luck. First time that I found Toran and also Garlic Chives.
I was so happy and excited.
Of course first thing I thought about.. I'm going to get known to the real rase of Toran Guk.
The last time I used potatoes, but the difference is amazing. So cremy and soft oh my god, I'm a big fan of Toran really good. 😍

I absolutely love taro root! I will definitely try this out when I get a chance.
My preferred method of eating taro is by first boiling peeled and cut up taro in water with a teaspoon of turmeric.
I don't know why but my mom always had me throw out the first set of water it boiled in and then we would re-add water to bring the root to a boil again. Then when it is tender, we would scoop it out into bowls and we would add yogurt, salt, chili powder, chili slices, finely shredded curry leaves. I love eating it this way and sometimes it would be my meal lol!

The root you have in the video we call 'EDDOES" in Trinidad and Tobago. We boil the eddoes root and eat it with salted fish/meat or stewed or curried meats. We also eat it in soups, and yet another method of cooking is after boiling we 'fry' or saute it with onions and garlic and other seasonings and eat with roti. We call another plant taro, this plant has a huge heart shaped leaf with a sturdy stem and likes to grow in damp areas- the other name we have for it is 'DASHEEN'. We eat the root of this plant in the same way as the eddoes root, as well as the leaves and stems in a soup called 'Callaloo'. Love your videos.

We, here in the Philippines use "taro" too or what we call "gabi". our sinigang dish (sour stew/soup) when cooked with gabi is more delicious, richer, and creamier specially when the gabi starts to dissolve slowly the longer you boil it. gabi alone when cooked is just awesome... Filipinos loves gabi.

Taro isn't toxic in and of itself especially hawaiian taro. it has a compound that feels like tiny shards of glass when you eat it raw and it is extremely painful. the compound is destroyed completely when you cook it through completely like 150c or higher

This soup is delicious. It sounds weird but in it there is a flavor that I can only describe as "french fries"- if french fries were in a delicious broth form. And yet there is no oil and no potato. It is savory and tasty at the back of the throat. The only challenge was that the only fine strainer I have is too wide and too shallow to actually touch the water in my soup pot, so I had to make the soup in my deepest skillet.

Maangchi, I adore how you teach Korean style cooking. You are absolutely adorable and very entertaining :D. Keep it up! I'm soon going to try your Kimchi, as I've never tasted any.

Arirang Supermarket is located on the other side of the mountain in my city requiring a special trip but no matter . One finds all edibles found nowhere else, I bet against anyone who contradicts me. I believe the Korean cuisine is very particular which suits my discerning tastebuds. I urge anyone to see and compare . This soup will warm you in cold months as it does for me .
