    I have 4 of those snake skins and while they do make setup and take down a lot faster, there is a trade off. They cause you to take up more space in your backpack.

      jerryj bloodworth Thanks! Mine has doors, but I’ve used it in some pretty nasty storms with great results. While I agree it doesn’t provide nearly the coverage of some out there, for the most part it has done a great job of keeping me dry. I have had some splashback since the coverage isn’t as wide, but that is somewhat to be expected.

    I'm sure you have been asked. What hammock is that? I just camped in a Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro. I never had a better night sleep. I'm deep in Florida and flying bugs and crawling insects are an issue. The dimensions are 10'5" by 5'. I know its large. I bought it for $39.00 I didn't want to jump all in to find out I hate hammocks. Now, I'm hooked. I already have a 10×13 aquaquest defender tarp which is bullet proof. Weight isn't an issue for me.
    Great video by the way.

    Great video series. I thought about hammocks a few months ago and started watching this. I ended up confused and gave up. I think I'm in a position now where I need to switch from a tent to keep me from trying to side sleep because I have somewhat of a shoulder injury and I've kind of been interested in not being a ground dweller anymore. I've been hiking on the Tuscarora Trail and there is not tent sites without serious bush wacking so that's the other reason is better options when the ground situation sucks.
    What worries me a little is the weight. Is it much more than tents? My current set up is the MSR tarp and mesh house which is about 27 oz. I'm willing to sacrifice if I have to but need to try and be as close weight wise to where I'm at now. Mainly because I use the Appalachian Ultralite pack and I try to keep my baseweight low on that design.
    So anyway... Dutchware Gear is like 40 minutes from my house. Should I try to go there and meet with the guy since he's close? Just wondering if that's a good option for the all around demands... I think I need to literally hire you as my purchasing agent. Kinda like a whole Jerry McGuire situation. Gimme the qwan Spigyver!

    • @SpiguyverBackpacking1
      @SpiguyverBackpacking1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Todd Stull Haha, I like it! So you can get damn close to your current shelter weight with some of the gear that is out there. And if you have enough money you can go even lighter, with more comfort and better protection.
      Look into the Dutch Half Zip, if you went with it in a 1.0 Hexon, it’s well under 14 oz. You can get one of many tarps to round it out at between 8oz (Dyneema) and 12-16 oz (Membrane or SilPoly).

      So I saw your 2018 gear video. The hammock and underquilt seems fine. I already have a top quilt that's good enough for now. Aside from the cuben fiber tarps which brand/material is your best suggestion. I only ask because I probably won't spend dcf money out of the gate. Also, I don't know what you meant by message... email? I didn't see another way to get in touch other than commenting here

      You can find me on Facebook (Spiguyver Backpacking), also from my channel page there should be a message option. I would go with a Sil-poly, they are better (in my opinion) than sil-nylon because they don't absorb water, don't have any problems with misting, and don't stretch.

    • @ToddStull
      @ToddStull 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spiguyver Backpacking good call on the sil-poly! I never really knew the difference. I'm not on fb anymore but the good news so far is that I did call Dutchware and they have a hammock hang party this weekend so they invited me to that and if I can't make it then they invited me to their shop. Super nice people! It looks like they can get me outfitted except i may have to look elsewhere for a tarp. We'll see what happens

    Ok I am a beginner. I now have the warbonnet superfly and blackbird xlc. I have been playing and learning in the back yard. I have been using Dutch gear on the ridge line and the worms on the stakes. You gave me some more options to try with the stakes. My question is when you were "setting up in the rain" I could not see how you adjusted your hammock. When you moved the hammock up did your line go above the ridge line of the tarp? Have wondered if you set up the tarp first and the hammock needs to be higher off the ground, if you move the hammock above the ridge line or do you move the tarp ridge line first then the hammock? Thanks the videos have been helpful. Bruce from the City of Orange in Orange county California

    • @SpiguyverBackpacking1
      @SpiguyverBackpacking1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way I do it is set up the tarp at about face level, that normally gives me the ground clearance to hang my hammock and not worry about it hitting the ground. Because I use the beckett hitch as my attachment, adjustments are quick, easy and can be as small or large as I need. If it's raining I try to ensure I do it all without getting my hammock or any other gear wet.

    Nice video Mark. Just bit the bullet and got a cuben fiber tarp with doors from HG and am still getting used to managing the doors so it was nice to see how you do it. Small learning curve. What length of shock cord are you using on the doors and side pull outs?
    UGQ definitely makes a great tarp a well! Have you seen their new penny pitchers series tarp? You should do a review of one if your able. Their 12 ft version with doors only runs like $105 or $115 I think! Great value.

    Great video! Very helpful! Waiting on my 12’ HG tarp w doors....curious your thoughts on the pullouts as you showed on hg tarp vs others who put the trekking poles across the top to open it up with a piece of zing it....think I like yours better, if that pole falls it’s sure to puncture the cuben. Coming from the ground I’ve mainly used the long Easton nails in conjunction with the ti shepherd hooks on my cuben duomid....do the hammock tarps need more bite ie the ground hog steaks?

    • @SpiguyverBackpacking1
      @SpiguyverBackpacking1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I have seen some nasty storms and the same thing that you are concerned with also concerns me. I've also seen several people with torn tarp due to high winds and highly tensioned pull outs. That's why I use shock cord for part of the system to allow some give, rather than putting additional tension on the fabric, be it cf or silpoly.

  • @rmoran113
    @rmoran113 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just ordered a chameleon and getting ready to order the 12’ HG tarp debating weather to get doors but thinking it’s so much simpler to get the linelocs on the 4 tarp tie outs points vs STS d ring then adding Dutch gear...do plan to get the Dutch continuous ridgeline.....thoughts on line locks? Dutch seems to use shock cord at guy out points but with cuben wouldn’t think would need the shock cord to keep taut. I’ve used shock chord on sill shelters to keep from sagging when wet but with my cuben duomid linelocs work great..also looking at going with a 20* 3/4 UQ....what’s your opinion on it vs full length as most my trips are in southeast with a year trip out west say temp ranges from 20-70....

    • @SpiguyverBackpacking1
      @SpiguyverBackpacking1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lots of good stuff in there, so let's see... I would go with doors, it just gives you more options. The 12' with doors would be my choice! I do like having the shock cord as sort of an insurance policy on an extremely expensive tarp, however, they are not necessary. Line locks are a great option and are quick adjustment points. In my opinion, anything below a 40* is going to be full length. Others go 3/4 all the time but need to supplement with something like a sit pad. I get cold feet so full length is for me. Plus when it's warmer you can loosen it a little and get some airflow between it and the hammock and vary the temp.

    Another Great video! I have been incredibly torn over cuben tarps for MONTHS... I currently have a warbonnet superfly and edge both at 11' w/ my 11' hammock (never had issues with length). I use the edge 75% of the time due to the weight differnce but because of the coverage and no doors i leave it at home if there is any rain in the forecast. I just love the design and size of the superfly.
    Do you have any experience with the HG Palace tarp? Its very similar to superfly but actually even a bit wider... For months I have been going back and forth between the standard with doors and the palace... The logic side of me says it is the same coverage as the superfly but slightly less than the weight of the edge so no brainer.... but the weight and cost difference keep holding me back. I would love to hear your thoughts!
    Thanks again!

      Actually, no big deal. I looked at the hookworms and realized Dutch offers them with shock cord and lines ready to go. I was just trying to ballpark the amount needed. I'm less worried about the doors. My concern with the tie outs was the whole slingshot stake thing. Although, for what it's worth, I've looked over several different youtubers and no one seems to go into the specifics on cord length.
