  • A few days before Christmas 2023, and I need to go see family and friends. Its blowing a gale - which means more energy use. Roads and chargers will be busy - how busy?
    To add to the fun, I stop at the Adderstone Supercharger - and find the stalls have been demolished by trucks. This can't be happening!!!

    Tesla V3s can share power. It is a common misconception. 4 v3s are powered by 1 of the power cabinets and they provide about 360kW and they can draw power from the other power cabinets to charge your car. So with a 12 stall there is just over 1MW for all of them that is shared throughout. Often you never notice but in busy times when everyone wants loads of juice it will share the load.
    Hope that helps.

      I came here to say that. Also there’s some evidence that the blocks of 4 aren’t connected together on a DC bus to share power with other blocks of 4. So it’s always worth checking the numbers for the least vehicles on an ABCD block or ones that will be drawing less power such as old S & X. This may explain why moving stalls to another block increased the charge rate in the video. Great video BTW.

      @@BROOMEngineeringTMIET The probability of 12 cars all charging at high power is quite low. Not bad lottery odds, especially if the worst that can happen is 83.3 kW charging. That is twice as fast as a Nissan Leaf that is *not* rapidgating.

      I was at a customers house a month or so back and she had tesla come to sort out a problem, I was talking to the guy and I told him that I'd never own one simply because I couldn't arsed with the constant recharging. He came back with "Well this one will easily do 350 miles" the owner heard this and said that neither she or her husband had ever achieved anywhere near that, usually 220-250 but much less if it's very cold or they're fully loaded and the guy started getting quite angry telling her that she obviously doesn't know how to drive it and constantly repeating that it will easily do 350 miles after he left, unable to solve the problem, the poor woman was really taken aback by this guys attitude so I suggested that she should contact his manager and make a complaint, she said that would be pointless because every member of staff she had met from that dealer was the same, brainwashed like stepford wives!

    Hi Ian. Interested to see how your trip would be if you had an LFP Y instead. How would charging to 100% vs 80% in your long range, change either time to charge or stops.

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Interesting question! If you have an LFP battery you wouldn’t charge to 100% on these trips. The battery likes a 100% charge once a week. So set off on 100% charged overnight. At superchargers the car puts in what it needs, not 100% as it takes ages.
      There is a certain TH-camr who deliberately charges his Taycan to 100% so that it takes ages, but he does that to fit his agenda…

    • @greghudson9717
      @greghudson9717 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have an LFP Model Y, and regularly charge up to 95% to 100% on road trips (depending on where I am going). If there are ultra fast 250 to 350kW chargers, I usually stay under 90%. If I'm heading into the boondocks where there are no Tesla Superchargers OR no 350kW chargers, I will probably be looking at charger sites with only 1 stall, and usually 50kW or less AND a higher probability that the charger may be BROKEN... It isn't always easy to see *IF* non SC's are actually working, so I really need the insurance of being at 95% to 100% full, so I can make it to the next charger, or (worst case) need to skip a SECONG broken charger, and go to the third charger (this has actually happened in Far North Queensland. And as for home, I charge to 100% almost every day from my solar and yes, it is FREE. After 30,000km I've lost about 10km of range (at 100% charge). It was 440km when new, now 430km (in Summer).

    I documented the journey Aberdeenshire to West Sussex south on the 18th December, and it was fine.
    But the return journey on the 27th December during storm Gerritt was absolutely fine …… until Dundee. No queueing at superchargers at all. But when at Perth Supercharger I was reading the Fubar news and checking the google maps and my thoughts were “oh no!”. I was tired and four minutes before getting through Dundee, the police blocked the A90. Turned around and found the A92 also blocked. Ended up waiting 3 hours at Dobbies before giving the Barry road to Carnoustie a go. It was flooded in one place, but a success! A convoluted route followed and got home 3 hours delayed. Not bad! A bit worried about driving through floods, I reckon if the water isn’t up to the sill then it’s ok.

The 3 is great fun to drive and amazingly quick - long range with boost or sport. The Y is less fun but much more practical and still moves much quicker than your average car. The Y is easier to get in and out of. A hatchback will usually beat a boot for carrying stuff. Pity the 3 isn’t a hatchback. I do miss my 3.

      In winter , if you are using the non Tesla chargers it will cost you more to fuel than a petrol car. High KW charges. Tesla it’s about on par or slightly cheaper depending on how cold it is. I was quite surprised how much it cost in a model Y in deep winter. Model 3 is more efficient. In summer the cars run much better. I usually charge at home at 7.5 pence a KW. If you are paying up to 10 times that on the road you will see how stupid it can get. Winter (very cold) 2.5 to 3.2 miles per KW in model Y on motorway at motorway speeds. Summer 3.5 to 4.2 miles per KW. 95% or more of my driving is done at home. That’s 120 miles out and 120 miles back entirely comfortably without having to use a public charger. Much cheaper than petrol / diesel in that scenario.

      You don’t need to worry about battery degradation, and as time goes on that will become clear. So many people talk about needing new batteries - the people who don’t have EVs. The vast majority of cars won’t ever need one.
      As for the touchscreen, it’s the same as any car with one. My Volvo S90 was run through a touch screen. It’s the future! At least all the controls are in a sensible place. My Mitsubishi stuck buttons in random places and not always in sensible ones. The button I used most was hidden behind the steering wheel…!

    Increased fuel consumption due to conditions isn't a problem of any significance with a ICE vehicle as it is with an EV, which requires more brain energy and anxiety to avoid fuel starvation. Undoubtedly the decision by Hertz to off load 20,000 Tesla's at a significant financial loss, is a headline that customer's don't want to hire them.

More to the point to be specific, announcements by corporate multinationals such as HERTZ isn't a regular occurence as in the sell off of such a huge number of EV's at such knock down prices for reason of unpopularity with hirers, particularly in the winter. If you aren't able to rationalise any difference, I can't help you there. Your support for Tesla's is admirable and I'm sure they are a nice car to drive, but the recent overwhelming negativity concerning EV's does have much validity for Joe Public who just wants to spend a few minutes filling his car, not wanting to worry about about a box full of additional factors that aren't relevant to an ICE car. 5 years ago we did get a jump in range, 150 miles was the norm back then, remember the Chevy Volt? Part of the issue is also regulatory, fact is the best batteries are coming out of China, but American tax credits are now dependant on local production, this is a nontechnical issue. As far as Hertz is concerned they are the first to really get into EVs and in my opionion did so too fast. Rememeber they almost went bankrupt and I believe needed to way to get investment into the company to keep it alive. They made a big bet and took too much risk. The reality is that most people do not understand EVs, hence the purpose of this (wonderful) channel, to educate. I am confident that as time goes by more and more people will learn about EVs, then drive one, then will be comfortable with them. And yes in 5 years, new battery technology will be on it's way, that's partt of the excitement of EVs, they are improving rapidly in both capability and in cost.

      @@dhrabarchuk I was assuming you were in England but based on your comment about the chevy volt, which as far as I know has never been available in the UK, you must be in the states? Supporters of the EV will never admit it but it's very different in the UK, several of my customers that bought electric cars have now gone back to ice, for various reasons but mostly due to reliability issues and range, another thing against the EV here is that whilst the price of petrol and diesel has dropped by a third in the last 6 months electricity has nearly doubled. Add that to the excessive insurance costs and the fact that a third of UK households don't have the facility to charge at home (No driveway) it's not looking good. Dealers are now offering 0% no deposit finance deals and motor traders definitely aren't known for there charitable nature. Another thing worthy of mention is that generally folk don't like being forced, coerced, blackmailed and bullied into buying a car and the way the British government is being viewed with suspicion by the public aided by the number of lies politicians have been caught out on recently, they did the same thing with diesel cars a few years back even offering cash incentives to buy one. Then once half the population had switched to diesel they changed their mind and made us pay more for the privilege of owning one.
