I think it's 'comforting' to anyone who watched really old movies as a kid. The original Dune movie felt like a fever dream watching it as an 7-8yo. All the old fantasy and Godzilla movies had a similar feel. The 1981 Clash of Titans was a favorite of mine. All these worlds were so bizarre, fantastic, and almost believable to my child brain, but things just... were not quite right due to the limitations of visual effects at the time (those claymation monsters... lol). For me, this stuff takes me back and gives me that same feel mixed with nostalgia. Ps: keep doing what you're doing. I look forward to your videos. I even went back and grief-binged some of your older videos after losing my mother 2 weeks ago as a distraction. Thanks for being a part of the process. :)

The dark fantasy is actually so comforting for me and I don't know why lol. It feels like a safe type of darkness that you can lean into and rest. It's not like nostalgia for me so much as safety. It's weird. Maybe it's the music in the background.
Part of me thinks this kind of comforting/safety feeling comes from the idea that a world like the ones in dark fantasy..are places where no matter how shxt your life is.. in most cases you have the ability to run away and start over. Like, in our world here.. we can't just drop our lives, move to another country and start over with a new persona... at least not without a LOT of extra work. In a Dark Medieval Fantasy world though? They probably don't even keep records of your normal villagers... so you could just leave your town and roam till you found a place far-far away... and start over as someone new. Don't want to be a farmer? Run away from home, roam the roads, stumble into the good graces of a band of merry fellows. Learn to fight, travel onwards, come to a new town, join the traveler's guild, go on adventures, join the king's army, become a knight and hero by saving the king from the enemy's arrow at the last second! Marry his daughter and become KING! 😂
An element you're missing in your description of "dark" is the old-school straight-to-VHS style graphical quality that looks to be coming straight out of the 80s and early 90s.
I'd count The Labyrinth as a dark fantasy. Maybe even Legend. I wouldn't want to live back then. The Earth stank. People stank. Towns stank. Everything. No toilet paper. No good medicine. No fresh underwear every day. Sketchy food. Nope. I'm happy here in the 21st century.
I would def count Legend, it's very retro dark fantasy. Especially when you get into the castle, there's a lot of these big establishing shots that fit this aesthetic really well.
It's not a tik tok aesthetic, but a subgenre that already exists in books, movies and TV. It's quite literally fantasy but darker. The subgenre had its heyday in the 1980s with movies like The Neverending Story, Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Willow, Legend, Time Bandits, Krull, Return to Oz, Highlander, Ladyhawke, Beastmaster, Troll, etc. There are scattered examples before and after that decade that you can find if you just search online.
I agree with the people who find these comforting. It reminds me of being a kid when I would stay over at my grandparents house and watch old 80s fantasy movies on vhs.

Dark fantasy gives me that sense of adventure and wonder. It makes me want to dive into whatever world is being shown and learn about the lore. Or go learn about the stories within it. It makes me want to go out on an adventure. That's the feeling I think it encompasses.
Someone else already commented a pretty good list of movie suggestions, and I don't think a "book reaction" video would do very well lol, but if you want some suggestions for personal reading that would scratch that old school dark fantasy itch I would highly recommend "Vermis" by Plastiboo. It's an art book with some light narrative elements posing itself as a guidebook for a fictional dark fantasy horror game. There's currently two books in the series. I'd also recommend the novel "Between Two Fires" by Christopher Buehlman, if you want that "brooding, wandering knight in a grim world" type of vibe.
This is comforting for those of us who grew up on a diet of the dark crystal, labyrinth, princess diaries, the tenth kingdom, terry Pratchett, hell even old Goosebumps shows.

Because now everything is all made cheaply and going for the easy path versus actually pushing the boundaries and limits of what they could achieve.
I always love fantasy. You are not weird at all. Dragons, castles, knights, wizards, gargoyles are all very interesting to me. I don't know why I am so drawn to this type of genre. I guess it is so appealing for me to get myself so emerged in this universe. The possible adventures that I can go on. I can be who ever I want to be. I can marvel at the beauty of the landscapes that I come across. It seems to me that anything in this universe can be possible. It is one of my favorite genre. Dark fantasy is very interesting. Thanks for sharing your interest in this genre with us.

Greg you CAN be a knight. You prob dont have to get into all the roleplay stuff if thats not your lane, but you could acquire/build pieces that you like or want to wear
Okay Greg so I have two thoughts: 1) something that helps me put myself out there and do more than I normally would is to imagine myself a main character. Would a main character wake up late and lay in bed watching TH-cam or would they get up and start laundry so they could go grocery shopping and happen to run into a new neighbor who is hot?¿? Etc. Also helps with my fashion attempts... And 2) you should definitely play dungeons and dragons. Then you can really play a knight and it's awesome
If Greg did the Templar Knight quests Recruitment Drive and Wanted in the game that his PK cap and the poster in the background reference, than he is officially a Templar Knight Initiate and can get the White Knight armour.
I literally want to be pulled from the screen from one of those creepy-looking yet cheery jesters into the beautiful castle under a stormy sky, and suddenly I’m hit with a gust of cool wind. My dress trails behind me and I run after the strange man.

I’m getting Labyrinth meets Monty Python and the Holy Grail and I’m here for it. A great costume/practical effects artist could make some real magic with these concepts.
They take other people's art, the put it in an AI and say make it move. That's all. I've been following this art aesthetic for a while now and it's sad to see people stealing art and making slight changes with AI but that's the world we live in
I do prefer the liminal spaces vibe, I guess because it feels more real to "adult" me, somehow, but I liked fantasy a lot when I was younger, and still do. Some of these have that perfect atmosphere. I'm sure we'll be seeing more and more mindblowing AI content as the tech improves. As someone working in the field, I'm very excited and a bit scared.

I can't believe Gen Z has discovered the wonderment and joy that Gen X got to experience the first time round in their teens (I'm the Gen X in question here 😄). The Dark Crystal, Legend, Labyrinth, Willow, Conan the Barbarian, Red Sonja, Ladyhawke, Krull, etc etc etc...the films that spoke to me in my teens ❤ I love the stuff you cover Greg, and the way you look at it, it's enjoyable spending time with you, thank you :)
Greg Bro I feel you. Because I feel like I should have been born Japanese as a Samurai in the late 1500s or late 1600s.
dude man
Greg I love your videos and I watch them when i’m about to go to bed. Your so underrated it’s unfair 😢
Greg! I would recommend ‘Wheel of time’ tv show and book series for a good fantasy rec ❤
This aesthetic gives me Sleepy Hollow vibes sm
We need to get a full length movie of this
Ever heard dungeon synth music? Imagine this aesthetic, but in sound form.
I’m getting Labyrinth meets Monty Python and the Holy Grail and I’m here for it. A great costume/practical effects artist could make some real magic with these concepts.
They take other people's art, the put it in an AI and say make it move. That's all. I've been following this art aesthetic for a while now and it's sad to see people stealing art and making slight changes with AI but that's the world we live in
The song that some of those videos have is also mesmerizing.
Time bandits has this vibe through most of it
I do prefer the liminal spaces vibe, I guess because it feels more real to "adult" me, somehow, but I liked fantasy a lot when I was younger, and still do. Some of these have that perfect atmosphere. I'm sure we'll be seeing more and more mindblowing AI content as the tech improves. As someone working in the field, I'm very excited and a bit scared.
