This aesthetic tastes "Fresh". It makes me want to sip lemon water with jingly icecubes and sit on some cool grass in my garden on a warm early summers day. I'd also maybe have a fruity ice-pop too. There would be clean laundry on the line and you could smell the detergent and softener in the air, and your neighbour down the street is mowing their lawn. Life is good. Life tastes Fresh. Hella nostalgic 🥹
I miss when we actually had optimism for the future and everyday wasn't like waking up in a dystopian alternate reality when you scroll through social media or turn on the news. I miss the hope and optimism I had for the future as a kid. I still want to hold on to hope that things can still get better. It's just getting increasingly more difficult.
A big part of frutiger aero was the humanist design of apps and software. Like how today it's very minimalistic but back then they wanted to show like the texture of paper in notes apps or chessboard in wooden texture. I feel like that made things more accessible to people
The design of those years was meant to showcase the capabilities of software to display details and the vibrancy of the display. Plus the fact that blue os a representative color for friendly technology. So tropical fish, waves, clouds, meadows.
That makes sense. Especially because you still have people who aren't as familiar with apps and tech, so having the apps look like things you are already used to helps you navigate. Hence why the music player looked like a portable cd player something most people would already be used to.
I literally was just watching some Fruitger Aero stuff on tiktok, and this just popped up. This is the future they promised us but never got. Like someone told me Fruitger aesthetics looks like it smells like mint and taste like sprite. lol
Not really the same ‘era’ as such but i really do love that 2008-2012 vibe. MTV, Gorillaz, early online computer games, celebrities with gelled hair with frosted tips, tumblr, nyan cat, Angry Birds and Smosh along that distinct grungy urban feeling that the world had was great imo. I really miss it, probably because i grew up with it. It was my 90s.
I still buy the Palmolive Aquarium soap. They changed the theme to more "cartoon-ish" like a year ago, but I still have a refillable soap bottle from "the older generation" in my bathroom.
My Ed Edd n' Eddy AU fanfic series is based on this aesthetic, as well as Y2K!!! I love Frutiger Aero so much, and not just for nostalgia, it genuinely looks so good and I love the glossy textures and the juxtaposition of tech and nature
Windows Vista was my favourite Windows and overall favourite OS to use in the 2000s, fite me. The changes of Windows 7 were so minimal, that an upgrade was not really needed, even DirectX 11 got released as Windows Update. They also had the same performance and after the 1st service pack, Vista had most bugs fixed. Vista allowed me to enjoy the frutiger aero design for 2 more years compared to people who waited for Windows 7. For that reason alone i will be always thankful that back then i didn't listen to the common reception and decided to just try it out. Another good lesson i learned back then (as a child) was to not believe things easily just because a majority agrees on it.
Yeah. They're basically the same OS. 7 had might as well be SP3 for Vista. By SP2 for Vista, most issues were fixed, and the main problem with Vista was that it was released too soon. If it was released when 7 was, it probably would've been just as popular as 7. It's just that the common household hardware in 2007 couldn't handle how demanding Vista was, many developers didn't properly code their drivers, which isn't the fault of Vista, and UAC was first introduced and a bit... aggressive, which also broke a lot of older programs that always ran with full access before. However, UAC is an amazing addition. The only thing I think Vista lacked was being able to pin icons to the taskbar, which 7 added anyway. Overall, it's funny to me how many people hated Vista and loved 7 while Microsoft basically sold them the same OS under a different name with minimal changes.
Yes! I've been writing comments about Frutiger Aero since like November, and I'm So glad you finally decided to look it up 😁 I already know this will be a great video, just like any others. Something about this phenomena is just so nostalgic..
I love the way that it's clear you put in a fair amount of research and planning for videos like these but the vibe still feels like you're just speaking off the top of the dome, it's very casually informative like you're just asking your friend about a random hyperfixation they have
Bro, your intros somehow always line up with what I'm going through. My bf broke up with me today. Blocking it out pretty hard, but yes, everything will be ok, thanks Greg. Binge watching your channel today
5:45 Back in the day anything that played mp3 files had the option to give you a little mp3 player on the screen. You could cycle through and choose the one you liked. There was a bunch of different options. It wasn't THAT long ago, I'm only 30, you're making me feel old 🤣
This style always felt too bright and too weird for me so I ended up using more realistic pics of nature/cities. I'm honestly happy that the dark screen/dulled colors are popular nowadays, it feels better for my eyes.
11:23 / 13:07 brought back so much memories jesus christ lmao, as an 05 kid, I remember my old school when I was in grade 1 we hade those style of computers, to me they were the coolest things ever.
A lot of it originally was to make tech seem less scary/bureaucratic, but it was for all people, not just the old people. With Windows XP, they gave it that theme to make technology seem more friendly to people to encourage them to buy computers, since that was the time when most normal households were getting computers. They wanted them to be seen as a tool for everybody and not just businesses. Before that, it was offices, and just a few households and enthusiasts that had computers, so there was no need to make them look friendly. Although, before XP, 95 was probably the most famous operating system among the public. Some people also argue that they like the NT/95 and 98 themes better because they were simpler, stayed out of your way, and just functioned as an operating system. Windows 2000 is often regarded to be the most stable and easy to use OS that Microsoft ever released. Funnily enough, Windows XP was also the first NT operating system that was intended for general use by the public, even though many people also used 2000 for that. Before that, Windows NT was for the businesses, and 9x systems, which were DOS-based, like 95, 98, and ME were for consumers. It's also funny that 2000 and ME came out around the same time, and 2000 is regarded to be one of the best operating systems that Microsoft ever released while ME is regarded to be one of the worst (if not the worst) operating systems that Microsoft ever released. It just goes to show how superior NT is to 9x as far as Microsoft operating systems go. Modern Windows is also an NT OS, so that hasn't changed. Anyway, since this video is about themes, and I got carried away, I'll also briefly mention that a ton of people liked the Vista and 7 aero glass theme, including myself, so it's a shame they removed it with 8 and beyond. (Also, Vista and 7 are basically the same OS, despite how many people hated Vista and loved 7. I just had to add that.) Finally, I'm sure this post makes me seem like a Microsoft fanboy, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. I simply like their older operating systems and themes, and they happen to be the most famous example. I'm not unaware of their DR-DOS sabotage or the browser wars, and I certainly can't stand their need to collect all the data they possibly can as well as their need for control. There's many things I despise about Microsoft, especially their early and modern days, but that won't stop me from admiring some of the things they did. I doubt anybody will read all of this, so I'm sure I just wasted my time. I sure wouldn't.
I was born in ‘93, and this definitely unlocked some memories. That media player shaped like just a blob made me audibly gasp, I completely forgot that was a thing. Also rounded edges on literally everything, not a single sharp corner in sight. Every button, window, header, edge and icon. Today everything is square, back then everything was round.
I remember when I subscribed to this channel. I was thinking about buying Subnautica, so I was browsing videos about it. I saw your series, and I thought: "Hey, this guy is really entertaining". Now, you just made a video about an aesthetic, and I still find it entertaining. That's special, dude.
I didn’t even know this had a name I just assumed this was like a figments of my memory from when I was young. Thank you for restoring a part of my childhood Greg :,)
The prime example of frutiger aero to me is film Meet The Robinsons (2007), specifically how the future was depicted. I was only 6 when it came out but I used to be utterly obsessed with it
There’s some playlists on TH-cam with that aesthetic in mind (there’s also a ton of others aesthetics you’ve explored on this channel), maybe you could listen to some of it to be even more immersed I do that sometimes, great inspiration boost!
7:50 Oh man, I'm just now realizing that I was a Frutiger Aero purist. When ios 7 came out, I absolutely refused to update my software because I hated how flat everything looked. I still have that phone to this day, and it still runs on ios 6. I should put it in a museum.
I like your videos like this where it’s a little sprinkle of nostalgia that we all get to enjoy together. This was a fun one. These ones and the liminal space videos are my favorite.
I think (and i have nothing to back me up other than my thoughts) that this was also the time where internet was becoming a big grown thing and people wanted to make it appear friendlier. I assume that the big globe sphere Earth things are the designers just trying to emphasize internet and make it look friendlier. Its green, its glossy, its near butterflies. Must be good!
This video made me realize how much I actually miss this aesthetic ;n; I know everyone hated Windows Vista, but I loved the way it looked. And gaaahhh, it used to have the colorful bubbles that would bounce around when the laptop would go into idle mode, I always loved that! The new Windows still has that option, but it never works for me anymore, I miss my bubbles, haha
Whenever I'm watching Greg or Gorg videos I'm always soo cozy. It is soo soothing and relaxing. PS: Greg and Gorg are both run by this dude. U should check out Gorg as well.
A lot of this was to show off new screen resolutions, color capabilities, and higher internet speeds to be able to download all of this stuff fast enough. And vector images becoming easier to create. It's a pretty interesting mashup of tech and aesthetics
I love this aesthetic almost as much as I love liminal spaces. Thank you Greg, great content as always. Goes a long way to help me de-stress after work.
The Frutiger font was designed for use on the signage at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, France. It’s a sans-serif, Swiss Humanist typeface, (as opposed to grotesk or gothic). It’s very legible, even at small text sizes, has a little more personality than its grotesk cousins Helvetica or Ariel because of it’s varying line widths, but isn’t as quirky as its humanist brethren Gill or Optima because the variations are subtle. It teeters on the edge of neo-grotesk, IMO. In non-font-geek speak, it’s edgier than those boring old fonts, but not too out there, & SUPER easy to read! Perfect for airport signs! ✌🏼
Man! all this plus rock punk playing in the weird Windows Media Player Skins, the MSN Messenger notifications from your crush that made you skip a beat, and browsing for homework while downloading viruses on Ares.
I appreciate the Aero version of Lisa Frank there towards the start. Also: that ad is why I bought into the Galaxy S3, they got me. Funny thing is, the phone battery didn’t last long enough to travel and take photos like the ad. I missed so many road trip photos cuz of that damn phone.
I didn’t know this alone was an aesthetic, I never heard the name. I remember growing up with this aesthetic and I would have thought this was a mix of cybercore/y2k/acubi with weirdcore or kidcore? But I’m happy this has a specific name so I don’t have to name all these aesthetics lol and I agree with the point where it seemed normal. Looking at this was the most like 2003-2013 thing I’ve ever seen.
As someone that turned 21 literally today I gotta say I genuinly think about that picture with the dolphins and rainbows at least 5 times a week, im so glad I now know what this is so I dont feel crazy looking back at my fever dream of a childhood😂
I wouldn't say this is an early 2000's style, I feel like the late 90s early 2000's has a completley different style. I would classify this as mid-to-late 2000s even into early 2010s but yeah there's something about frutiger aero that always brings me peace. It was the aesthetic of my high school/college years and it brings back memories of being independent for the first time making my own money but not fully independent that I was stressing out over rent or bills lol
I think the advances in computer monitors going from 256 colors to millions of colors was a big driver for this. Also, Photoshop innovations with layers for blending photos together made it easier than ever to get those montages of dolphins mating with butterflies, in a splash of rainbow water, over a green field, in front of a distant city skyline. :D
Looking back at this aesthetic feels bittersweet... It really is ironic that it was selling technology as friendly and green, but nowadays it's anything but, and graphic design became flat and minimalistic. It was whimsical and optimistic and lively, and now technology feels progress and profit first, people second. It was the future we were promised but never got.
Frutiger Aero feels so happy and optimistic. Maybe as we got more depressed, our marketing followed suit. Regardless, this needs to come back, seeing it just fills my head with dopamine.
I wish I could recover my old folder with all the digital screen desktop landscapes I collected. Google search changed. I cannot find even one of them. That’s when I’m reminded the way the world reset in 2012.
This vid kinda fits in with your retro futurism one. You should keep doing these. My suggestion is that you check out cassete futurism. An asthetic from the late 70s and 80s. Alien, Alien isolation and Outland are great examples.
Sorry I use the word "sick" so much in this video, it happens when I wear my hat backwards 😕
You are not to be forgiven 😠

I like the hat- it’s cute!!💚

I don't know if mine can be revived, but if anything could, it would be this.

I kinda miss frutiger Aero, it should make a comeback

I wouldn't say this is an early 2000's style, I feel like the late 90s early 2000's has a completley different style. I would classify this as mid-to-late 2000s even into early 2010s but yeah there's something about frutiger aero that always brings me peace. It was the aesthetic of my high school/college years and it brings back memories of being independent for the first time making my own money but not fully independent that I was stressing out over rent or bills lol
Not me having a mental breakdown and clicking on this vid to distract myself and one of the first things he says is “everything’s gonna be okay” 😭😭
I was born in 2004, so when I think of my earliest memories that I remember (2008-2011 or so), I almost always think of this style.

That’s when I’m reminded the way the world reset in 2012.

this video unlocked so many memories
I love your videos my man you give me life some days!!!
This vid kinda fits in with your retro futurism one. You should keep doing these. My suggestion is that you check out cassete futurism. An asthetic from the late 70s and 80s. Alien, Alien isolation and Outland are great examples.
This brought back terrible memories of limewire and tween me screaming at my computer
thank you greg ❤
I remember in the early 2000s soft soap had a fish in the bottle attached to the straw
If they somehow invented a 'dark mode' frutiger aero, it would be the greatest aesthetic ever created, and nobody can change my mind.
love the content keep up the good work
Oh boy. The year(s) I was born! I'm excited for this one 👏
