Harry. When you say the doctor says he can speak every language you act as if it was forced into only this episode. Where actually this is far from the case, in the season 1 finale the doctor says 'I'm fluent in 5 billion languages and you haven't got a single way of stopping me, so if anyone is going to shut up its you'

The Dodo that two parter was actually fantastic. And possibly the only great episodes Chibnall has produced. Seriously, not like “42“ or anything, The Silurian 2 Parter was genuinely captivating. It even raised some moral dilemmas. It’ll be unfortunate if you were to shit on that merely due to the monstrosity of s11 and 12.
Dr D I don’t hate the Silurian story because of Series 11 and 12, I hate it because I find it boring, the guest cast is annoying, the redesign of the Silurians is awful, and on top of all that, it’s basically just “Doctor Who and the Silurians.” Recycled.

The cryptic woman didnt account for nothing. She was literally detailing the stingrays before they even arrived in the episode, building up the suspense of them. They are death.

4:08 _the bus wasn't actually intended to be broken!_ They shipped the bus to Dubai (where they were filming), but it was crushed when someone tried to move it via crane.
They had already rendered CG for that specific bus, and they couldn't find another double decker exactly like it, so they couldn't just ship another one out. Producer. Nightmare. I imagine Phil and Julie were in tears. But Russell resolved the situation with technobable of the wormhole crushing the metal.
It's makes more sense for the plot anyways, so a blessing in disguise perhaps?
I love it when Harry doesn't do basic research for some problems that crop up!
Why did the BBC wanna end the show back then? Was at the peak of popularity.
Now they refuse to end the show despite dwindling viewing figures.
Actually according to ratings or views, it was on a decline during Season 4. Which is a shame since S4 is my personal fav.
The BBC didn't think that anyone other than RTD could keep the show going or improve on what he had achieved. With hindsight, it looks like the BBC was right.

In this episodes defence I like the idea of the old woman knowing about the doctors future. I feel adds to the mystery and fear of whats to come, the idea that almost anyone can see or know whats coming, like there is no escape for the doctor.
Especially since at the time it was widely known David Tennant was leaving the role and we had the fake out regeneration in the previous season's finale. It was like counting down to the end of an era. Kinda like the Watcher story arc towards the end of Tom Baker's run.
I've heard you say before "As there's no Tardis about, it can't translate the Alien Languages."
But Tardis proximity doesn't translate the Alien Languages, as The 9th Doctor tells Rose, the TARDIS's telepathy circuits fiddles with the mind and translates via that.
Only time the Tardis couldn't translate for Rose to my memory was during The Christmas Invasion was due to the Doctor dying as he was seemingly part of the Translation Circuits. And then there's the devil language in The Impossible Planet, as that was impossibly old to translate.
Similarly; in "When a Good Man Goes To War", River tells Amy that the TARDIS's translation circuit takes time with the written word and The Doctor had already dematerialised in The Tardis.
Still, a great review though, Harry. Keep up the great work. :-)

I don't know if a lot of people remember, but there was a good example of this which took place in 'Rose'. When the Doctor is talking with the Nestene Consiousness, all the audience can hear at first is roaring coming from it while the Doctor seems to have a regular conversation with it. But after Rose and Mickey get to the TARDIS and make contact with it, we can then hear the NC say "Time Lord!". Perhaps physical contact with the TARDIS is the bare minimum for getting the telepathy circuits to kick in?

I always understood it as a symbiosis. The Tardis and Doctor are symbiotic creatures, and the Tardis is actually using the doctor for it's purposes, allowing him to access specific data, including the ability to speak all languages the Tardis knows.
Remember we view the show through the eyes of the companion and since the companion in this episode is Christina we won't be able to understand alien languages as she's never been in the tardis

Really goes to show that Chris Chinballs and Steven Moffat aren't great showrunners but decent episode writers (well not Chinballs DW eps but other things he's done are decent)
@@markmatthews7202 chibnall has done well with drama on doctor who most of his work has been poor and i agree with what you said about moffat although series 5 was great,series 7 and 8 were good,6 and 10 was average and series 9 was awful.
Davies can establish a few solid characters in around 10 minutes, while Chibnall has taken 2 series to attempt to establish his characters. I still have no idea what the characters are actually like, I only have an idea of Graham.
@@Max-ek3kf I think there is Always a few gems with Moffat, not a huge fan of his tenure, I liked S5 and S8, S10 was okay and so was S7 and a bit of S9, but I still don't get most of S6.
@@theredstonebuilder1120 agreed davies was good with characters, with chibnall we always hear about how the doctor likes her companions but we see the opposite a lot, liked ryan and graham in series 11 yaz was bland in series 12 yaz was still bland and ryan and graham were not as good they were average,the companions dont always do much either.
with chibnall there are a lot of plot holes and we dont get to see yaz strengths as a police officer, we saw rose,martha and donna show their strengths as rose was someone who worked in a shop serving chips which is what she did in school reunion, martha would help people because she is a doctor and donna worked in offices and she used those skills in series 4.
Every time I've rewatched this episode, I think more highly it of every time. It's got lots of great character moments, great build up for the End of Time and Lee Evans is too nice to dislike for me, especially with him naming units of measurement after his relatives and being basically just some Doctor Who fan.
This episode has had the exact inverse effect on me. I’ve seen enough times I can’t stomach it. The characters are one dimensional, annoying, and lame, and have random plot convenient interests and skills making everything feel horribly contrived. Christina is like a terrible MCU heroine and is incredibly cheesy and insufferable. Lee Evans is obnoxious and unfunny. The desert setting is boring and feels like a budget decision. They even used the magical black lady trope like Steven King for really forced feeling teasing for End of Time. Showing the show to my partner for the first time so I actually rewatched it again yesterday and it was a huge drag, especially being back to back with the Next Doctor, another bad special.
I like how they make a point of drawing attention to the bus’s number plate, but later it changes during the CGI flying shots.
How do the fly-men get into those jumpsuits? The suits have normal zippers, but their weird claw hand things wouldn’t be able to grip them.
I mean check at 6:57 when Harry points out the rusty hook. You can see the dilapidated warehouse windows from whatever abandoned factory they are filming in super clearly, really makes you feel like you are on an alien spaceship!
Michelle is hotter than the desert the bus landed in. Just for that I bump this up to 7 out of 10.

With all the purple lights in the fly men's ship it looks like the doctor forgot to install their GMOD asset pack
I really like how this episode feels grounded and down to Earth, but exotic and alien at the same time.

This episode was trying to emulate the movie Pitch Black with a none muscular Doctor playing Vin Diesel.

Yeah that tunnel isn't London but Cardiff, its the tunnel that goes under Techniquest, take that dual carriageway and it'll get you to the M4
The M4 goes to London, Heathrow.
Where the GPS was pointing is the Blackfriars Tunnel, which isn't quite as substantial as the one in Cardiff, but it's legit.
I remember this episode was the only time doctor who clashed with primeval on ITV when it first aired. My family was split into two rooms that evening.

Réka Hegedűs I think in the Moffat era it’s more a telepathic thing than a translation thing. And in the Davies era it’s the doctor speaks everything. Depends on what the episode needs

I'm gonna heavily disagree. it's a fun episode imo with a great idea in the space eals that is just so simple but effective. I miss when every plot was so bloody simple like this. I'd take this anyday over a confusing episode
The fact that Michelle Ryan was in it should get it more than a four.
0:03 Russell and David had agreed (all the way back in 2006) that they would do three seasons and a year of specials before leaving, the latter of which would allow their succeeding showrunner, crew and cast ample time to plan out their debut series and overall tenure.
Very thoughtful of their part, but for me the Specials are very mixed. I only actively _love_ The Waters of Mars and The End of Time: Part 2.

Saw a similar generosity from Moffat at the end of his tenure, Chibnall refused to do a Christmas special, so, in order to preserve tradition, he threw out his original plan for his final episode and instead wrote the (admittedly disappointing) final Christmas special we've gotten so far. Something tells me we won't see the same decency from Chibnall at the end of his reign, which has unfortunately been extended for another three years.

I wish Michelle Ryan had become an actual companion to the Tenth Doctor. She had so much chemistry with David Tennant.
Fun fact: The bus was damaged during shipping in transit to location (Dubai), Russell then wrote the damage into the script.

When I was little I really liked this episode when it came out.
Years later, I still really enjoy it, it always on my list of rewatching episodes. I can see and understand why it isn't great and why people are not a fan, I mean just look, but whenever I watch it I still have a great time XD

This is actually one of my favorite episodes just from the wonderful interactions with the doctor and the scientist on the phone
10:30, Actually yes. People were complaining that the font was too small for Series 1-3 so they had to increase the size, which meant making it faster.
It’s also why the theme tune was changed to something more energetic.
Personally I find this episode ok but even then it’s kinda forgettable compared to the waters of mars.

@@jacklewis3803 I rewatched the next doctor again later night and my god it's worse than I remembered. It has its moments, but Jesus Christ it just doesn't make any sense for starters, and it's the only episode of Tennant's entire era which I constantly forget even exists. Planet of the dead is definitely the next weakest but it's leagues better than the next doctor.
The Council Of Losers I think the next Doctor is ok and I can enjoy it, but I can still admit that it’s the worst Christmas special of the Davis era and isn’t a great Cybermen story in general.
Could we eventually get torchwood on the channel after a couple of months it’s released on patreon?
i personally love when she says ‘he will knock four times’ as not only does it have the creepy score it also has the doctors fear in his eyes but then it is revealed in the end of time it wasn’t the master knocking but wilf
Probably the most dull of all of the Specials. Bit of shame. Water of Mars next tho, looking forward to that.
The Waters of Mars is honestly my favourite who episode, the characters feel real, it really jabs at the core of the tenth doctor and what he stands for, it shows the danger of the doctor not having a companion to keep him in line (you could argue Adelaide filled that role by the end of the episode), not to mention the AWESOME makeup.

Oh Harry , to answer your question about the credits, apparently by Season 4, the BBC had a limit to how long credits were allowed to play out for, so they had to speed them up

@@RobTFilms To be fair I should have clarified more. But I'll tell you it was so wired because I remember seeing the teaser for this but I only remember watching the end of time.
In defence of the Doctor knowing all languages, the telepathic translation only worked when the Doctor was around (As seen with Rose in Tenants first episode), so it makes it feel like, the reason that the Tardis is translating it between the Doctors brain and those around him
I liked that the doctor left the phone on speaker while he phoned UNIT maybe being in a situation similar to Midnight he wanted them to hear the awed reaction he knew he would get to ensure his credabilty a bit

When you think about it, this episode is basically a dress rehearsal for the Moffat-era. The flying bus is something that Moffat would do and Christina is basically a proto-River Song (Yes, I know River had already appeared at this point, but the enigmatic criminal aspect of her character hadn't been introduced yet, so Christina got there first.) Incidentally, I don't mind this episode. True, it's not as good as most other RTD-era episodes, but it's certainly better than the likes of Sleep No More, Hell Bent or Orphan 55!

I’m very cross at you. My favorite doctor, ever, and you only have 1 episode from series 5, or 6!!! I can’t remember honestly but how. How have you not reviewed 5, or 6 yet. I’m honestly thinking of spending $50 just to make you do a video on the 11th hour, or the 11th Doctor in general

I grew up watching Matt Smith as The Doctor. I believe my first ever episode was actually his first full one (the one I remember getting me really into Doctor Who was The Time of Angels).
Anyways. This was the first episode I ever watched with Tennant. I never liked Tennant as a kid, I think it was probably just because I was picky and didn’t like that he wasn’t the Doctor I knew. But I remember really enjoying this one. Not sure what made me dislike him considering how much I liked this episode, but still, I had weird opinions as a kid.
I’ve watched quite a few of Tennant’s episodes now that I’m older, and I can happily say that I love him now. But I never went back and watched this one. I didn’t really think about it until I saw this video.

honestly i don’t mind the similarities between the episodes. if ur entranced and within the world you can rationalize it since we know how people will react in that situation already it builds continuity in the other episodes with similar situations. i feel like it can be commentary on the human condition since the doctor is indeed an alien and he finds himself observing the same human reactions he sees each time
lol lady christina had me pulling a face the whole time, her entire characterization is 'i steal things because im rich and bored and that makes me cool' like ok girl 😂😭
The only thing I remember about this episode was that it was the "Easter" special.
I always had a theory that waters of mars was supposed to be the Easter special but because it had plot points that were integral to the end of time which an audience would forget in the gap between April and December (either that or waters of mars was too dark for an Easter special) they quickly cobbled together this one and added the 4 knocks lady to cover up the fact it was complete filler.
He's almost at 100k, come on guys!

Ok, to put this guy at ease (but whilst remembering he's NOT a Cop);
1:Of course, they're driving at a safe distance,I'm not going to get alongside or in front of something that can easily swipe my barely modified family saloon car off the road!
2: The purpose of getting the number plate is so I don't have every cop in "London" (CoughCLEARLYF**KINGCARDIFFCough!) stopping every bus they see.
3:This isn't so much about Police Procedure, more a correction of a statement. The Detective did NOT summon UNIT! UNIT arrived on scene in response to detecting the wormhole and took over the scene, completely ignoring his complaints about it being "his incident scene" and showing they didn't care two flying farts about "a couple of Petty Crooks". I mean, the Doctor even mocks him with the retort "Oh, right, well, I'll just slip into this Police Box and place myself under arrest..."
