People really miss the point of this episode. Elton's opening line is *meant* to be cheesy; he's a normal-ish bloke making a blog online and trying to make it seem interesting to the viewer, which usually ends up being a bit cringey, just look at TH-cam.

    • @exexpat11
      @exexpat11 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

Or Facebook and Twitter. "I'm eating Toast" "I'm visiting a friend" "You know what makes me mad" kind of stupid posts stupid mundane people do. Does not make it any less cringey. This is fan service to stupid fans of the show. Look they made an episode just for them. That and paving stone porn.

Elton makes it pretty clear with his "Wait 'til you *hear* the rest" that the whole adventure with the hoix was just him narrating excitedly into the camera. The Scooby Doo chase sequence represents Elton's crappy over-exaggerated explanation.

@antisocialite I would argue that the episode does not sufficiently indicate that it's all an exaggerated account from an unreliable narrator. The vast majority of the episode seems to suggest that it is all 100% real.

    • @LadyDoomsinger
      @LadyDoomsinger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@DELTARYZ As is often the case, it is a matter of interpretation - the episode never explicitly state it one way or the other, and to my knowledge no one involved in the production has made any official statement about what was the intention of it. So, one answer is not more right than the other.
I like the "Elton is exaggerating" explanation because the episode makes more sense that way, and is not just a badly written script (although it is still pretty bad).

I find this episode impressive, actually. This is a new perspective of showing how Doctor affects ordinary people's life. We all know that if you get close to Doctor you may die, but when we talk about this topic we tend to think of those scenes that people around Doctor, most of time his companions, die beautifully with honor. However, that's not how normal people die. They may die in ridiculous ways, being absorbed by an ugly monster, becoming a face in the concrete, and dying before they can do anything significant. And when they are in a horrible scenario, the Doctor comes not because he's here to save them but because the girl beside him said they upset her mother. That's what the truth is.

They could google image search the photo and find out that it's a picture of Rose Tyler, that girl that went missing a year before big ben was crashed into by an alien spaceship.
From there it wouldn't take much more googling until they find Jacky's name.
Then in 2006 all you'd have to do is open a phone book and find Jacky's address. realise it's a block of council flats then jump to the reasonable conclusion that she'd use a laundrette. Then go to the laundrette every day for the next however long until he meets Jacky.
Not an impossible task really, even back in 2006.

Alice Quinn Rose wait, does Rose being gone for a year make this 2007? Because if Rose was 2005, 1 year later was 2006, Christmas Invasion must've been Christmas 2006. Yes, this is set in 2007.
Also, Rose can't be 2004 because of the ending to the End of Time being in 2005 and she clearly hasn't met the Doctor at that time.

    Post viewing comment.
Your'e right - it is a pile of shite but it still has a couple of good points.
Firstly, it's good seeing the story from the human point of view - I think that the current series' have all been lacking in their "feel" for some time now - Probably from Matt Smith's first episode onward. They all feel like they've been made in outer space or on a rather upper middle class estate - I liked Jackie's council estate much more much more than Amy's odd little country village - it connects with the viewer more if the doctor is in real life England eating chips than him hanging around trendy cafes and other 1 star eateries.
The other thing it did well was using the ELO music during the episode - I know you weren't keen but I keep imagining this episode without it and it would (in my opinion) be much duller without it.
Now - who's up for a little pavement face fucking?

There’s so much potential with this concept. Imagine if the whole thing was found footage. What if he used one of those wanted sign for Rose to track down Jakie. Get background characters from previous episodes who have actually interacted with the Doctor to be LINDA members. A story about the Doctor having a fan club of normal people who just want to find out more about him sounds perfect for a unique episode, but no we got this.

This episode is honestly one of my favourites. I love the idea of making the Doctor just the supoorting character. I love the perspective of a normal guy, who is kind of a loser, starting this bis conspiracly. I love to see, how the doctor effects other lives he may not even know exists. This idea - that even if the doctor isnt there, there are people thinking about him. It makes this episode special.

It's confusing because the visuals suffer from unreliable narrator. It's not that Rose and the Doctor actually had a Benny Hill chase scene with the monster. It's that while Elton is telling the story, they make up visuals to go along with his telling, because otherwise the whole episode would just be Elton talking with a few video clips he shot himself. So, we aren't really seeing Rose and the Doctor very often, but Elton's impression of what they were like.

"Doesn't make sense" Come on... this is Dr. Who so everything is a little.... out of reach. Personnaly this is on of my favorite episodes. It reeeeally dosen't take itself too seriously witch is so much better then when Moffat takes the wheel and fails trying to make it too serious. I think the show needed an episode like this. The acting, the monster, the love, and Eltons mooranic investigations sucks beacuse he is simple. And simplicity I think is a key in this episode. L.I.N.D.A is so far from the greatnees of the doctor, but is still important humans make the simple thing important. Loved your video tho. Keep up the good work!

There's one scene that almost redeems this episode, and that is when the Doctor and Rose arrive towards the end, and the Doctor says something alone the lines of "Interesting. Some sort of Absorbatrix... Absorba...clon? Absorbaloff?" To which the monster replies "Absorbaloff, yes!" Almost as though he doesn't really know himself, and kind of just settles on this as the best sounding option. It's really totally daft and actually quite funny in that it almost breaks the 4th wall. Not that I think Doctor Who SHOULD break the 4th wall, but still.

I am shocked that as a Brit your first reference for the chase sequence was Scooby Doo instead of the old British variety show run by Benny Hill, off of whom the Scooby Doo chase sequence is a reference and a nod to.

Mate, on this channel he's referenced Tracey Beaker, Cod 5 Zombies and Assassins Creed 1 (So I assume he's my age). Benny Hill is way before our time. I remember watching old Scooby Doo episodes on Cartoon Network or whatever. Ive never seen Benny Hill. Also he talks about his nostalgia for these episodes from 2005/6. That should let you know he wasn't around in the 70's.

Love & Monsters is brilliant! It provides perspective of life around The Doctor and shows just how good he is when it comes to aliens compared to humans. It touches on love, family and tragedy with a great soundtrack and was a nice change to the other episodes. That scene where Elton finds the Tardis is phenomenal, it really hits home the mysterious/mystical/impossible side of The Doctor that normally goes un-noticed by the viewer as we see it all the time. In a weird way it gives Doctor Who a reality in which no other episodes have. Although the concrete woman was just weird...
I think this episode goes over a lot of peoples heads which is such a shame because I reckon its up there with the best of 10.

Some of the elements could be better executed, but the concept of this episode is a great idea imo: showing Jackie living through Rose's absence, and showing how the Doctor can both positively and negatively impact people he doesn't even know about. His influence on Earth brought LINDA together, and allowed them to create friendships that went beyond their original goals, but he also puts innocent people in danger, as the Absorbaloff would never have been on Earth if not for the Doctor. It's interesting seeing how Earth life goes on in the wake of the Doctor's visits, even if the execution was clunky at times.

i do totally understand the criticism of this episode, but for me when I saw it as a child it was brilliant. To think that an average kid my age could design a monster and send it into the cbbc competition and it actually being on the show was groundbreaking to me. It felt like they were in touch with the kids watching it at the time and it somehow felt brilliant. I remember the competition being on tv and it was a huge deal lol.

Nobody seems to understand this episode. This is a retelling, NOT a recording. He doesnt have footage of the events, hes telling the story, thats why its goofy and doesnt make much sense, not because the doctor actually had a scooby doo chase scene. Notice that none of those scenes have the camera overlay. Its a visualization of what hes describing, and he's of course describing it inaccurately.
    This episode is great.

The doctor has the tardis which is shown to have at least one library and the majigery that can create just about anything and is a member of the most technologically advanced species in the universe - and the best he can do is sonic whatsherface into a slab on concrete?
He could clone her using random skin or hair, grow the clone and transplant her consciousness into the clone body? he could even have all that happen in the background and just time travel back to where the episode ended after it was done to deliver a living Ursula right after he left.
He could transplant the consciousness into a life-like robot even, there are examples of those existing.

I couldn't really get into Dr. Who, but I thought this episode was a great and strange music video for Mr. Blue Sky; "The World's Happiest Song". Don't get me wrong, it was terrible. But the whole "created by a small child" thing is a nice one-off idea that probably really made that kid happy. If it was a more common practice then it'd wear thin, but for a one-off idea, it's harmless and good for the kid.

I've read they had a contest for fans, kids, to write and episode and this was the winner. Not really that bad I think. The Scooby Do running around is great kid stuff and having the girl from the Harry Potter movies is a great kid turning too. Arguing about the bkue bucket vs the red bucket is also kind of kid funny. Kids don't listen and that's the kind of thing a kid could screw up. Oh, you meant NOT the blue one, oh.This isn't a GREAT episode but I really think it's geared more for kids. Except thinking that you could spend the rest of your life absorbed into the body of a monster or as a tile is really gruesome.

The direction isn't "confused". The story is told by Elton, but not all of what we see is 'found footage', the rest of it is the story as told by Elton, as he remembers it - and he's an unreliable narrator. That's why there's a scooby-doo chase sequence. That's why there's studio-level sound on a poorly remembered childhood memory.
