- This is a prop replica of the amber cane John Hammond used in the movie Jurassic Park! My portion was the completion of the amber topper!
It came out amazing. We are now one step closer to cloning a dinosaur!
This collaboration between myself and pocket took us 2 years to pull off due to various setbacks and issues! It's great to finally be able to show this to you, as not talking about it for this long has been hard for me!

The bugs were put in jars with a cotton ball soaked in lacquer thinner. They died in seconds. I wasn't cruel.
I also squashed 3 ants on my desk this morning with my thumb. I'm a monster...
Weell... I think being killed, even if it's instantly, is something I'd rather not have happen to me. So I'd still say it's cruel yeah
If you feel that deeply about the cray flies, I would say this video would be better for you to skip.

Peter Brown honesty these bugs died in a more humane way than they probably would have experienced in the wild. Invertebrates dont feel pain anyway. Don't understand why people r making such a big deal out of it.

+SML 1995 - They do eat but not that much, only plant nectar, water. AND they are not mosquitoes but rather crane flies. Still the project came out great and looked awesome!

Joe Sudz they are called crane flies and they don't eat mosquitoes. That's a myth.
Joe Sudz just looked that up to average out how many mosquitoes he actually saved in killing these things, only to find these insects do not in fact eat mosquitoes.

Imagine being dense enough to think the bugs are still alive when being put in the resin.
It's likely the ones found in amber were alive when they got stuck. Probably drawn to and caught in the sugary tree sap that would eventually harden around them.

It would be cool to see like a "Nature Dip It" series, where Peter places different insects, small flowers, or small plants in resin or something. I think he could make some really cool things with them. Like if he put small flower petals in resin, he could make a pendent out of it or something.

Devon O Apples rot due to It being exposed to air. If it doesn't get oxygen, it will not rot.
epoxy stops the natural process of breaking down, one of his fist projects was bacon in a screw driver handle, it's still holding up years later

3 years ago today i stumbled across this video and it made me fall in love with this channel
You continue to solidify your place as my favorite TH-camr. I love the creative, random, and gorgeous stuff you make! I know the bugs are a pain in the butt, but if you catch a few extra this summer maybe consider making an "amber" pendant for a necklace? Or a bracelet? It wouldn't even need to be amber colored and/or the same type of insect. Just a thought!
Hi Peter, if you ever need to make a mold like this again: instead of wrapping the wooden block in packing tape try sanding it really smooth then spraying it with lacquer. The silicon will not stick and you get a very smooth mold which will greatly improve how many times you can use it.

I love your results but I think the amber would look more real if there were flaws in it. Maybe a little dirt & bubbles.
I was thinking the same thing. Amber is always irregular in shape, color, density, and clarity. This is too uniform. A couple of tiny leaf fragments or smaller bugs added would help the illusion.
This is a replica of a prop from a movie though, and in the movie it was pretty flawless like this

Keep it Random In the movie it had two iconic bubbles on the top right of the mosquito.It wasn’t perfect but it was near there.

If you use A-mode (Aperture priority), and bump the ƒ/stop up to 7.1 or a bit higher, autofocus will hunt a lot less when you go in for a closeup. ; your shop seems to have ample lighting, so it ought not to be a problem.

Unless you were to freeze the resin while curing the ice would melt and if I got it right from the video resin doesn't like moisture.
SmilyLily1996 resin also heats up a lot when curing

Could you try using a vacuum chamber to get rid of ALL the bubbles? I think the resulting cast would be awesome!
TheRoot wouldn't a vaccumm just expand the bubbles and make them bigger?
If i'm correct, i believe the bubbles pop therefore drawing them ti the surface.
