      Just use the metric system already, where volume and weight have easily distinguishable and separate units of measurement. Also, the metric system uses the base ten number system. You almost can't fuck up.

    1 the mold is not filled with water to the top
    2 some water splashes out of the measuring cup
    3 shavings are really thin so take almost no volume (you can make a lot of shavings with a small piece of metal)

    • @evelgreytarot8401
      @evelgreytarot8401 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Not to mention he Pushes the shavings out from the center instead of removing them causing the height of the shavings to increase therefore needing more resin to cover it. He did quite a lot to throw off his calculations.

      Let’s say that the water was lower and it actually holds 80oz of water. The block of wood (which would absorb SOME resin but not much) would lower the amount of resin needed. The shavings wouldn’t take up a lot, which is right but 76oz of resin should have been near the top if not enough

    Not sure if this has been said already, so forgive me if it has. Aluminum curls take up almost no real space. The curls are very thin and curl in on themselves, despite the volume they consume in a bag, the resin will fill the void and the aluminum will hardly displace a thing.

      Peter Brown - A little on the expensive side, but you should try some of the stuff from SolarColorDust.com. I use a bunch of their stuff and pearl-ex's colorshift pigments (much cheaper. SCD products range from $5 for 10grams to $25 for 1gram whereas pearl-ex is reliably $7-$8 for 20 grams) in my casting and painting. some people feel it's a bit gimmicky, but to be honest... I really like me some color-shift nebula pendants, or stuff that changes color in low-level UV (like sunlight)

    Aluminum Shavings are curled very flat pieces of metal, they are actually an extremely poor filling that are deceptive, they occupy a larger space than the volume they displace. If you melted those shavings down you would probably only displace a fluid ounce of water which is why you needed so much resin. also you didnt fill the whole mold there was a large top area not filled with its circumference filling it uses more as its diameter increases.

      Was gonna say I just saw this but if he had weighed that material, and compared it to a piece of aluminum the same weight I bet it's like 5cm square tops. So only like maybe a cup of infill, not very much at all.
      Plus I bet that silicone mold flexes a bit, with the weight inside it and he didn't completely fill it when measuring it, probably 10% more than he wrote.

    I was a composite engineer for 7 years and worked with experimental resin and fibres from experimental fibres to experimental resins and DCPD and open molding was mainly used as apposed to injection molding.
    We used laminated chipboard to make molds sealing joints with mold wax and used release wax or spray. in this case i would have made a suspended center mass,and also used vibrating table to remove air pockets.
    The smell from the rein is Styrene gas and causes lathargy and also be aware that if unused catalized resin can burn and the smoke given of is toxic and highly carcinogenic, always poor water on top of unused resin.

  • @RighteousFondue
    @RighteousFondue 7 ปีที่แล้ว +165

    In the past you said that resin-casting resin shavings/turnings is pointless since the shavings just turn invisible in the resin, but what about casting colored shavings in a clear resin? Then you'd have a bunch of cool shapeless colored streaks and stuff in the resin which I think could look amazing.

    • @jth_printed_designs

    It helps for when you measure the initial volume with water that you fill it all the way up. At 4:58 you can see there is maybe a 1/4 inch where the water does not fill up the mold. Since this is the widest part it would hold more than a 1/4 inch further down.

    Silly Peter, aluminum shavings don't collapse. They are thin and wispy but strong. They don't really break and due to their springy shape they probably take up more space than any other kind of shaving. Plus you didn't squish it much because thats dangerous.
    You basically didn't put anything in there at all.

  • @lens6522
    @lens6522 6 ปีที่แล้ว +673

    So, I think I know the series of mishaps that occurred for the 75oz to be misleading.
    1.) The mold is not entirely full with water when you measured the volume.
    2.) The aluminum shavings take up almost no space because they are so thin.
    3.) The silicone mold deforms even with the tape on it.
    4.) Black magic.
    That is all.

    • @davidfletcher8197
      @davidfletcher8197 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think it's basically just that the resin is denser than the water he used to test the capacity. A cup of resin will weigh more than a cup of water, so a bowl that holds 75oz of water will hold more than 75oz of resin. This is why you use volume like litres or something instead of weight.

    • @NWolfsson
      @NWolfsson 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I went to check on wiki and HAHAHAHA both -.-''
      Actually both in Imperial system, in the US system it appears to be a solely volume unit soooo nope, 75 ounces of resin and 75 ounces of water /would/ take the same space if he measured both as volumes.
      But clearly there was room for mistakes, with the soft silicone mold and the measurment of the bowl's inner volume not taking into account the thickness of the bowl.

      Note to you: aluminum shavings are very fine, and have remarkably low volume, if you reduced it to a powder, you would likely only get approximately .89 lb/cubic inch, very near the density of a homogenised cube. Assuming the bag was one pound, you'd get just over a cubic inch of aluminum. Edit: you might do better with powder later on.

  • @burly636
    @burly636 7 ปีที่แล้ว +109

    The aluminum is very thin, looks volumous but not really. My husband used resin with wood turning around the rims of wooden bowls and we intended watch parts, clay faces, etc. It is very fun to do. Now he does basket illusion pieces. You would not know they are solid wood. They look like Indian baskets. Time consuming, but people love them. I will have to show him this.

    • @Rowynn71
      @Rowynn71 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      burly636 I wish this answer was higher up, because it's correct. Those shavings are less than 1/100th of an inch thick in most cases so they might look large but they don't take up much volume, just a lot of space.

    • @fleimlehner
      @fleimlehner 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The answer is probably to do with the resin shrinking in volume as it sets. He put in 75+ ounces into a 75 ounce mould with a wooden block in it. The only explanation has to be the resin shrinks when setting.

    • @widdley24

      @@JubioHDX, no, that's NOT it. Watch it again. When he got the supposed 75 oz. measurement, he got it by *(almost)* filling the *mold* with water, after the bowl was removed! I’m honestly disappointed by how many people actually think he is using the mass of the water to calculate how much resin the mold can contain. Use your heads, the man can obviously tell the difference between the density of resin and water. Not once did he use a scale to measure the weight of the water or resin, he used volume, not weight. Also I do agree that the metric system is superior and blah blah blah... but he was obviously raised using the imperial system so stop giving him so much crap for it.

    The formula of density is mass divided by volume(p=m/v) so v=m/p. The density of water is 1 g/m and the density if resin is around 1,4 g/m. So as you can see to fill the same volume (v) în the equation v=m/p(water), v=m/p (resin) you need more mass(m) so you need more resin as a result.

      Peter Brown Why making the silicon mould first? Couldn't you just pour the resin with aluminium straight into the glass bowl and save $100 for the silicon?

  • @AlBarathur
    @AlBarathur 7 ปีที่แล้ว +85

    You didn't measure wrong. At least the water volume wasn't wrong. The part where you made a mistake was that aluminium shavings are misleading. It seems to occupy much more volume than it actually does when you put a liquid in. So you should have weighed the aluminium shavings and then used 2.70 g/cm³ (or 0.098 lb/in³)as density to calculate how much volume that weight of shavings would actually occupy.

    The aluminum shavings are EXTREMELY thin and they have a lot of air in between them.

  • @jakekimds
    @jakekimds 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    To visualize why the volume of the aluminum was so small: go to the kitchen take out the aluminum foil. Note that there's like a 0.5 cm layer of foil on there. A very small amount. Then take the whole thing and loosely crumple it up. There should be enough to fill buckets.

    I think the problem is that the water didn't reach the rim of the mold, and the resin did, not sure if it is enough of a difference but is a considerable one. Anyway thanks for your videos, I enjoy them a lot :)

    • @christopherbedford9897
      @christopherbedford9897 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Exactly and dead obvious. Not just "thin" but *curled up* therefore taking up lots of space. Oh, I'm told it's swarf, not shavings. That's for the pedants.
      When you watch Carl Jacobson's video of turning the resultant block of resin you'll see how the entire workshop ends up full of resin shavings from the same volume (contents of the bowl) and it's easy to see how the metal shavings can take up so much space and still have little to no actual volume of their own

    The aluminum is paper think and in curls. This means that the resin would go into the "tubes" and hence the aluminum would in fact not take up very much space.
