Building the mosquito in amber cane (from Jurassic Park)

  • This is a video that has been 65 million seconds in the making! That's right; a million seconds is over 11 days, so Peter and I have been trying to finish this project for over 2 years! In this two-part video, we attempt to reproduce the cane used by John Hammond in the film, Jurassic Park. My part of the project was to make the bone handle, and Peter's job was to reproduce the insect embedded in amber.

    Awesome. I didn't even know they made super-long drill bits like that. Also, as many times as I've seen the film, I never paid any attention to the part of Hammond's cane below the amber knob, so never would have guessed it'd be an engineering project. 🙂 I think I just read it as bamboo rather than being a spine replica. I wonder if the makers of the original prop made theirs roughly the same way you guys did.
    Again on this video, some very impressive construction techniques I never would have thought of, like the tubing and dowel to prevent the spade bit from getting off-center, or heating the epoxy to give it a more watery consistency.

    5:30 I used this trick yesterday and it worked brilliantly! I drilled a hole for a lag bolt and forgot to counter-boar first, so I started to work out in my head an overly complicated way that I would drill a hole in a piece of scrap and hot glue it to the surface so the spade bit would be centered and not wander....Then I remembered this video and grabbed some tubing. Thanks Pocket!

    I don't understand your negative condescending responses. I was a premier propmaker in Hollywood for over 25 years and retired last year. I understand that everybody has a different way of doing things and I respect anyone who tries to build anything.
    There is amazing talent out there and I know it. But in the I need it yesterday mentality in the motion picture industry not all processes are efficient enough. And 1 failure to deliver on time is a career ending situation. After working on VAN HELSING and AVATAR I saw that the future of hero prop making was a dyeing concern with the progressive influx of computer generated imaging. So I was very fortunate to have been in propmakings golden years.
    You never know who your communicating with so I never assume anything!
    Thanks, Scot Mckay

    • @pocket83
      @pocket83  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      C'mon, man. You can't be that dense. You started the conversation by telling me that my project is "not even close," and that my process was a "waste of time." In case you haven't noticed, this wasn't for a screen prop, and I reproduced it (for TH-cam) in my spare time using internet pictures and a chunk of old pallet wood.
      I'm not really interested in your repertoire; as far as I'm concerned, you're just rude.

When one says there’s no work and no money to be made it’s simply because they don’t know that what we create is worth everything as is everything that has been made in the world! Where there is a will there is a life that can be made using our minds and hands, not hand outs!!! Love the videos thank you! You woodworkers are so preoccupied with whether you could, you didn't stop to think if you should.
    But yes, you should and we're all happy you did. Don't stop pocket.
