- The trade routes created by the steppe peoples of the Pontic-Caspian and Eurasian Steppes as well as the flow of innovations such as horse domestication, wheeled transportation and bronze age metal working innovations helped revolutionize civilization. In today's episode we explore two of those steppe cultures critical to this process, the Botai and the Yamnaya.

wait WAIT finally a minecraft youtuber who knows history and cares about illustrating it carefully in minecraft.
Not like some who say they build asian style and mix up chinese with japanese architecture only to save themself from critics with saying its fantasy.
I have found a gem, now it is time to treasure it with a sub.
Greetings from Germany 🎉
That is so nice of you to say and thank you for leaving me such a gracious comment! I hope you enjoy the rest of my videos. I try where possible to build things as accurately and to scale as possible.
@@Haraldr_Halfdan I will like 'em bcs i love history
Teaching people through minecraft is an awesome idea, I love this fr
Thanks! Glad you liked it! I really enjoy merging my interests.
Agree. Can't wait for more.
Great video. It is worth remembering that Yamnaya people were biological ancestors of a big part of the modern European and Indian male population, and their language gave base for all Indo-European languages.
I'm glad that you've chosen that topic.
Yeah, exactly. I didn't really go into the whole Proto-Indo-European aspect of things because I was already introducing a lot of different concepts like horse domestication, the transition and spread of bronze age tech as well as talking about 2 different steppe peoples, but I did think of it. I ultimately felt that discussions about language groups and ancestry would make the episode too scattered....but maybe I should have. Thanks as always for all your engagement and insights, your awesome.
It's not possible to be ancestor of only only one gender of a population. I think what you meant to say is that male Yamnaya people are ancestors of modern Europeans.
I love prehistory and I love Minecraft this is so sick
Thank you so much!!! Glad you liked the video!
History and Minecraft?!? My two favorite things! You just earned a new subscriber
That's awesome! Welcome to the channel!!!! Hope you enjoy the videos!
After John had finished his New York apartment made from limited space, he was suddenly teleported back in time in Neolithic-Bronze Age Kazakhstan. There, he found himself inside of a mound hut. Frustrated, his girlfriend came up with a plan.
In order to afford resources, John's girlfriend had to spend 5,000 tin to desperate Mesopotamians who were looking for tin to create bronze.
Now, lets transform this hut into a functioning home.
Firstly, remove the grass roof and replace it with a constructed frame of galvanized square steel, borrow some screws from his aunt to secure the frame firmly, cover the framework with eco-friendly wood veneers and use the same veneers to complete a square shape.
Than install aluminum alloy windows to create some sunlight for John and his girlfriend to enjoy.
Build a large wardrobe next to the pre-existing frame stand that was supporting the previous grass roof. Install horizontal and vertical boards within the wardrobe to create a space for John to study, as well as eat meals when he's hungry.
Next to those boards, we're going to create more boards to hang clothing and off-season bed sheets and quilts for Johnny and his girlfriend to have rough but fun nights on.
Visit his aunt again to borrow some mattresses to create a comfortable bed that will stand directly on where the roof-frame stand originally was. Right in the middle so Little Johnny and his girlfriend can use the surrounding features while right in the middle of the hut.
Embed a wall mounted toilet on the south side of the hut, along with anti-skid tiles for safety. Above the toilet, will be a shower head for nice warm showers. Separate the wet and dry areas with glass doors and place a overhead bathroom heater to assure the space remains odor free, as to not bother his nomadic tribesmen.
Next to the door, build low cabinets and an oven for cooking and a wash basin, as well as a projector that will hang from the roof so John can watch his Korean dramas.
Wow, thanks for sharing your creativity! That is clever and a fun read!
We conquer the villagers drinking milk and ridings horses with this one
LOL, that made me laugh. Thank you!
this is really fascinating. one of the major problems with history youtube channels is sometimes they fail to visualize things, but using minecraft to do this is a really good idea
Thanks! I am glad you like it and think I pull it off reasonably well! I have found it is a great way to show the scale of historic and archaeological places.
I think I've just found one of my new favourite Minecraft channel, wow, great work!
Your Archaeological Minecraft series is awesome, I've barely started it and I can confidently say that you've put a lot of work into making these videos and it shows.
I love people teaching things through the medium of Minecraft, and archaeology is perfect for it because we can easily make reconstructions of what ancient structures might have looked like and explore them!
Keep the good work, you are doing an amazing job!
Wow, thanks! That is so nice of you to say and I appreciate you dropping me a comment letting me know! I am happy you are enjoying the channel so much!
I love both Minecraft and archeology, and it's so cool to see ancient sites recreated in an immersive setting! You have great building skills too
Thanks! That is very nice of you to say, though there are tons better builders than I am, but it is something I continue to work at to try and get better at. I find one of the most challenging things is to make them look good but also to scale when each block is a 1m cube, but that is often half the fun!
This is SO COOL. I love the attention to detail in the builds and that it gives almost a tactile sense to excavating and studying this stuff
Thank you! I love that you enjoyed the video and it helped visualize the world of those peoples!
Between this channel and Gneiss Name, Minecraft has really shown itself to be a great teaching tool with the effort of you wonderful people!
Thank you so much! That is so kind of you to say. Yeah, Gneiss Name is awesome! Flattering to be compared to him. Thank you!
Learning and minecraft, that’s what I want to try to do! This is epic! I’ve always loved archeology!
You should totally give it a go then! I find that I learn a lot more when I have to teach it and trying to recreate archaeological and historical builds in Minecraft helps lead me to understanding things and appreciating things better. If you do make some videos drop me a line so I can subscribe :)
I absolutely agree! I definitely will when I do!
This is an excellent idea! I hope people can learn through you! Thank you for using this as an educational tool
I hope so too! I enjoy doing them and am thankful that people such as yourself appreciate them and are enjoying the content.

DAMN THIS VIDEO IS TOO GOOD. I demand more :3
HAHA!! Well I have a couple dozen other videos on the channel, I hope you enjoy those too! I publish new videos every week or two. It really depends on how much research I need to do and how much real life stuff is going on.
Great building!
Thanks! I appreciate you letting me know you like it.
This is a great video, loved the actual digging of the grave hahaha. Hope you'll continue making more of educative and fun content !
That's the plan! I thought it would be a good idea of switching it up and doing more show not just tell :)
thanks bro you really helped me out
Glad to hear it. Not sure how you were helped but happy to have done so.
Amazing video 👍
Thank you! Cheers! I appreciate you letting me know you liked it!
I've been watching through all your videos since finding this one (now on part 1 of the aqueduct video!), and I'd love to see you cover the roman baths since you've mentioned them in multiple videos
Will do! I have that on my list and agree that would be cool. There are baths right across the street from the city block I built of Pompeii so I have been thinking at some point of expending the Pompeii built to the north and doing and episode about Roman Baths :).
Super interesting!
Glad you think so! Thanks for letting me know this was an interesting topic!
Very cool, I shall subscribe
Thanks! Welcome to the channel! Glad you liked the video!
This is fantastic! I love learning about different cultures throughout the world. The presentation style is amazing. If you are familiar enough, could you make a video about early Mesoamerican culture?
Thank you so much! I really want to do more on Mesoamerica. I have one video I did recently where I recreated a mesoamerican ball court but I have other builds on the list to do. It isn't an area I specialized in so it takes longer to research, but I really want to do more in that area of the world.
this is really cool!
I appreciate you dropping me a comment and letting me know you liked it!
I've always loved ancient history, and the idea of explaining it through Minecraft is a great idea! One thing I wonder: have you heard of Terrafirmacraft? It's a modded version of Minecraft that completely revolutionizes the gameplay, making it so that you live more like the ancient peoples did. I've recently been intrigued in ancient architecture, since that's an important part of progression in the game. It might catch your interest, it might not. Either way, I have loved your videos for a while, and I love the fact you're covering not only one of my favorite ancient peoples, but through my favorite game at that! Thank you for the amazing videos!
Your welcome! Glad you are liking the channel and the ancient history minecraft videos! Thanks for the tip about checking out Terrafermacraft. Someone else also mentioned it in the comments. The name sounds a bit familiar but i haven't ever checked it out. Maybe when I have a spot of time I will do that. Thanks!
You sir are a gem in the rough, thank you for correctly and accurately explaining history in both an educational and entertaining way.
You just got a Sub!
Nah nah nah you didn't just get a sub, i set that to ALL, your account is also now on my desktop.
LOL! Wow, high praise! I am so happy you so enjoyed the video! Thanks!!!
I actually really like this. I think if you want it to appeal to low attention span gen z like me you should add subtitles! Great video
Thanks for the tip! I have thought about doing that for the shorts I have done but haven't really played around with it for my regular long form videos. I would have to experiment around and find a way to do it that isn't super time consuming. Glad you like the video!
arch student here-- this is so cool!
Oh, very cool! Welcome to the channel and glad you liked the video! What is your favorite class at the moment?
this would be a cool ruin type or actual village for mc
Yeah, while I was building the Yamnaya village I was thinking maybe it would be fun to convert a village on the Archaeo SMP over to one of these villages.
Well thats an easy subscribe! reminds me of Magister craft. A server where they recreated ancient Rome and each video they would explain an aspect about ancient rome all while conversing in Latin to help teach it
Oh! That sounds awesome! I will have to look up those videos, though my Latin is super rusty! Thanks so much for the tip on other great content and I am happy you found the channel and enjoyed the video!
😮😮😮 So good
Thanks!!
What prevented a pit house from being flooded?
Oh, that is a good question! I think water would get in one of two ways. If the pit's surface was below the present water table or by coming in through foundation cracks. I think with the former I am sure they learned pretty well where in the terrain they could build to avoid ground water coming up from below or the water table rising into the pit-house from underground. As for the later, I think by using thatch or turf the water would run off the roof and as long as it didn't pool near the foundation it probably wouldn't come in through the walls. Also, while I can't say for certain, and my build had cobblestone for the walls, I would bet that they, like most peoples would cover their walls with daub/mud to help keep the walls more water resistant. I appreciate the comment!
Unlike Mojang they were able to make copper relevant 😂😂😂
LOL, well, to be fair, it is useful as a decorative block... :)
This is particularly useful since genetically, most european people basically are Yamnaya, at least on the male line.
Yes, the culture was quite expansive. Thanks for the comment! Glad you liked the video.
@@Haraldr_Halfdan History is my guilty pleasure when I'm procrastinating. My real education is ecology, but I guess the two are connected in a lot of ways.
You should play TerraFirmaCraft! It's much more history-aligned than normal Minecraft is
I will have to check it out. I have had a couple other people recommend it for that same reason but have no first hand experience as of yet. Thanks for the tip!
Interested video!😮
Could you make a build of the Nok culture of Northern Nigeria?
Oh, I will have to look that up! African archaeology is a weak area for me but I would love to research it, learn more and share! Good call!
when i have kids this is how i'm gonna teach them stuff
Love it!!! Yeah, my son grew up on bedtime stores of ancient and historic peoples and individuals :). I think it is important to know the past.
Man, I have to tell you. This content is niche, but brother, is it my niche? Yes, yes, it is.
LOL!! Yeah, I am with you! I love that I get to combine two things I enjoy and happy to hear you are liking it too!
Babe wake up, new Harold Halfdan video
Thanks! Glad y'all are enjoying them!! That is great!
In your opinion what updates to Minecraft would enhance your ability to show archeology in Minecraft?
That is an interesting question. I think it would be great to be able to paint walls or better yet combine terracotta or dirt with dye to create a plaster that you could put over stone etc. One of the things I am challenged with is that the walls are already very thick by being a meter wide but then both sides of the wall need to be the same block unless you make 2 meter thick walls, which is very rare archaeologically to see in most structures.
Oh heck yeah, now on to the Byzantine empire! You might want some mods.
Yeah, 100% agree. I need to do an episode on the Byzantines. Do you have any mods or texture packs you would recommend for that?
Ancient warfare 2 and chisels and bits. That and custom NPCs. Those three mods I think you can get the job done for almost any time period up to the industrial revolution. That's for Minecraft version 1.12.2
As far as texture packs go that's all a matter of personal preference but I personally think John Smith would work
this rules!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
what are you doing steppe-culture?
Yep!
@halfdan you are sitting on untapped potential with these videos! I’m telling you the amount of Girlfriends that will watch this content for hours
LOL! That is funny. Well, I hope they all enjoy history...and Minecraft.
its also said that... i dont know when but uhhh when china was still using alloys like bronze etc. more commonly, Steppe peoples however especially near the altai region was using steel weapons and armour more commonly.
they were called the TU JUE / Iron Helmets.
Interesting. I am not an expert on ancient china so I really couldn't speak to it. I appreciate you bringing it up, I will have to read up.

Wait I don't understand. If horses came from the Americas how come Native Americans never used them for manual labor or as a mount? And does that mean that zebras aren't related (don't share a common ancestor) with modern day horses?
Thanks for dropping a comment with a question I can help answer! When Horses existed in North America it was before they were domesticated or used for manual labor and were hunted to extinction or died out some other way in North America before that happened. After the end of the ice age and the land bridge was already separated was when they started to be used in that way in Asia. As for zebras, they are related to but not the same species as horses. They share shared ancestor from an evolution standpoint but aren't the same. Kind of like lions and tigers. Shared evolutionary tree but different species.
did you play on a server called anglocraft?
Nope, sorry. I am a member of the Archaeo SMP.
@@Haraldr_Halfdan sorry the halfdan name seemed familliar to me lol
@@jamieevans3666 Yeah, no worries. There might have been someone named Halfdan.
АЛҒА ҚАЗАҚСТАН
I like the Kazahk comment in the video about the cultures who populated that geographic area in antiquity. Very nice! I don't speak Kazakh but Google Translate tells me it says Forward from Kazakhstan. Did I get close? Thanks for sharing!
It’s crazy to me that horses came from North America and then went extinct there but were later reintroduced to North America by Europeans.
Yep, pretty wild. I would love to know how Native American cultures would have developed had that not have happened. What would happen in history if Europeans arrived and there was already the horse and all the culture and civilization advancements that having a horse would have enabled.
bro uses AD/BC, that's a win and a dunk on quackademia. I dig it. I'll subscribe for that.
Thats off topic but.. What is that brown thing on this Minecraft skin? Mustache? Mouth? Nose? Why is it brown... Its looks like a nose, but its really dark shade of brown... Is it a mole? Or a pipe? Im really shouldn't been so lost
By the way great video and historcly accurate!
I assumed he had a visible nose and a hidden mouth, presumably under the blonde facial hair, but then once I imagined the brown as a mouth I couldn't unsee it and its silliness.
LOL, that is awesome. I think it is supposed to be his nose, but I have no idea why it would be brown. Maybe it is a mustache and it is a different color to the rest of the hair and beard.
Thanks! Glad you liked it beyond trying to figure out why I have a brown nose. Maybe because I am down in the dirt digging???
Yeah, me too. I never saw it as a mouth and always as a nose. Now that I looked at it like a mouth it looks like the silly iskall skin a bit he sometimes puts on with the odd mouth.
🚬🗿🙌
Thanks...I think ;)
First bruh moment
Hah! Thanks for the comment. :)
terrafirmacraft
Oh, I have never played Terrafermacraft. Does that have archaeological or historical content? I will have to look that up.
