The ground cover looks like Vinca Major. It’s referred to as Cemetery vine in old cemeteries. The wheat sheaf on the grave you asked about was to symbolize the person had a long and fruitful life.
Don't forget, Ireland is the Emerald Island !!! When My Grandpop came over, he not only could grow anything green or large vegetable gardens but would grow sod and take large patches of it to St John's Cemetery in Stamford, CT! He also became a fireman in Stamford!!! I loved him dearly... Pop Gorman.... RIP ☘️💚☘️😊
Hey, how cool, you’re in my childhood stomping grounds. I grew up there, Ontonagan. My wife and I are moving back to lower Michigan in February from Napa California. Wife is retiring in December. Been to Irish Hollow Cemetery many times. There are actually graves all over in the woods surrounding Ontoganon. In fact when I was a kid there was a dirt road that had a grave dead center crosswise and you drove over it, I think it was finally moved in the 80’s. When I was a kid I was waiting for the school bus with my brother and a black bear mugged me for my PB&J, potato chips and cookies, I never did see that Happy Days lunch-pale again. Haven’t been back there in years. Thanks for sharing. There quite a few a few Native American burial sites in that area too.
My four year old grandson and l just had our first old cemetery exploration a couple weeks ago. I was surprised how interested he was and we had a pleasant afternoon together.
We had our son join us for cemetery walks, exploring and taught him respect while visiting. He wasn't always up for it though. On a trip to an elderly aunt's birthday party, we drove by a great cemetery spot and braked the car thinking hey, check it out. Our son hollered "Noooooo." 😂😂
@annfisher3316 Maybe next time you could pack a lunch and have a picnic with him. It’s really nice when you are at a really old and peaceful one of the weather is nice.
Most people buried here were likely born in Ireland or in Europe and came over. Very Irish to say which county you came from, county Cork and such, much like a regional identity, like someone would say they are from Chicago-I wonder if their relatives back there knew of their passing, some may have gotten a message, likely months or even years after they died. This is a beautiful old cemetery, kind of reminds me of Highgate in London, spooky in parts, overgrown with moss, creepers and trees.
The flower of the periwinkle can represent serenity, calmness, winter, and ice. It can also symbolize blossoming friendships, womanhood, sentimental memories, and everlasting love
The grave of the children of Gustav and Bertha Keiser(?) shows that the children died one day apart. Albert who was 4 years old died March 12, 1889 and Clemens who was 6 years old died March 13, 1889. How very sad for this couple to lose both of their precious children just one day apart.
The plant covering the woodland floor looks like vinca minor. It's beautiful when it's in flower. It is covered with small blue flowers. It also goes by the name of periwinkle.
Yes I remember doing that too. Periwinkle I’ve heard of I guess I never heard the other name. I don’t know anything about plants I didn’t inherit the green thumb from both parents 😢
First off it was so nice to see you in the UP of my home state. We spent our honeymoon in the UP 25 years ago. I miss it so much, haven’t been able to get back to Michigan in a year because of recovering from my car accident and then cancer diagnosis and chemo. I hope I can get back there next spring. I love my Great Lakes and northern woods. Thanks again Ron!
This is what I found: Requiescat in Pace, or rest in peace, actually comes from a Catholic funeral prayer. To understand the meaning behind RIP, consider each word carefully. The direct translation is “rest in peace” or “sleep in eternal peace,” depending on the context. When used in relation to someone who died, it’s a prayer for the deceased soul to rest in eternal paradise. In the Catholic church, this was a way to pray for the soul to find a place in Heaven. The word “rest” or “sleep” indicates that the soul is finally at rest with God. There is no more suffering. To die, according to this phrase, is to find eternal peace in the afterlife. As a common prayer, Requiescat in Pace became a normal way to comfort family after a death. Knowing that the loved one was gone is always hard. The reminder that their soul “rests” in Heaven helps with the family’s grief and pain. Over time, the English translation of Requiescat in Pace became more common. Today, the Latin phrase is rarely used outside of the Catholic church. ❤🙏👍
What an absolutely beautiful cemetery this is! For being in the woods like this it sure is well kept. I also love that plant that's spread all over the ground. This is a place a person could truly RIP. Also, it was nice to see that some had flowers, AKA visitors. This cemetery is not forgotten. This was a really nice walk! ♥💐
Well! What a beautiful, old, huge vine covered Cemetary that was Ron. 😮 I didn’t think it was would be so big either. And it's amazing how well kept it is. And that there are stones they are trying to restore. That's awsome. Thanks 😊 for taking us along. ❤
28:19 is probably a shortened version of "Requiescat in pace" meaning rest in peace. This is R.I.P. true meaning. Great find! I agree, all the green is gorgeous.
"Whose woods are these? I think I know." What an enchanted walk. I can imagine groups mourning their departed in this place. Stunning stone work. Beautiful cemetery. I think those are blackberry bushes. Thanks for this awesome walk.
See they had a Patrick Byrne from Cork. My father's mother's maiden name was Byrne and there are a lot of them in Ireland, Irish-Scottish actually. RIP to all here at the Irish Hollow.

A little information on the name Walsh , it actually comes from Wales, during the days when The English kings were attacking the Welsh, many Welsh people went to Ireland to escape the persecution, and the Irish called them Walsh , also Welsh, so there were a lot of Cymry , Welsh in Ireland
The stone that reads "Request In Pace" I believe is actually meant to be "Requiescat in Pace" and it dates back to a traditional Catholic prayer for the dead. It is part of the origin of "Rest In Peace."

Such an incredible cemetery! The verdant setting adds so such to the mood. It really does have an Irish vibe. Thanks for taking us there, Ron, and doing so with such deep respect for the dead and for our Irish heritage.
Beautiful cemetery. I looked it up and found this regarding request in pace....The phrase "rest in peace" is a translation of the Latin phrase requiescat in pace, which is a blessing that means "may he begin to rest in peace". It is often used in Christian services and prayers, as well as on memorials and gravestones, to wish a deceased person eternal peace and rest.
36:30 I think these might all be from 1 family. Really tragic, having all your children pre-decease you. The Lantry family too. Likely parents with their son who died aged 24, after his father but before his mother.
