Usually, it was a ‘cabinet’ TV’ that sat on the floor (which was the kind my Grandparents had, so we’d sleep over Friday Nights and get up at 5am to watch Saturday cartoons! They had like 12 Channels!!). Anyway, on those TV’s there was a panel that opened for those xtra contrast controls.
I believe the two technic holes on the rear of the TV are supposed to represent the vertical and horizontal holds. You used to have to get a screwdriver into them to adjust them.
As someone who owns an NES (I got it for Christmas brand new in 86'or 87' and it still works) this is one of the best sets LEGO has ever made. That Easter Egg is a reference to level 1-2, the ending where you could jump over the finish and get to a teleport or rather a "cheat" that was built into the game so you could skip to alternate levels.
@@luisemoralesfalcon4716 That's how it used to work back then, you got rewarded by doing difficult stuff. We're in the era of achievements for "you walked!" "you killed an enemy!" etc
@@AlbertoDsign if you are implying that super Mario bros is harder than most modern games than I think you are mistaken. Super Mario bros is quite easy
When building the set I thought the easter egg was meant to be a suggestion of the inner electronics of the console and it was only after I saw it called an easter egg online that I realised what it actually was.
I usually hate stickers, but in this case these are actually accurate compared to the real stuff.... It would have been cool if they would make more "games" as add-ons, with another cartridge and another belt for inside the TV.
This is my favorite build all time. Ppl think it's a real NES. A fun but challenging build. I think the gamer nostalgia is gonna catch fire. Well be playing these games on a lego system soon. The build to drop the cartridge in is surreal
I loved this set so much. It's probably my set of the year in 2020. The cheer amount of big (and long) plates and big bricks is absolute ridiculous here and you literally feel that every cent you spend for it is worth the money while you're opening the bags and empty them out alone. It feels expensive and it was an absolute blast to build.
Just finished building it, too. I agree with everything you said. I'm shocked still that the screen and other intensive parts of the build were not bad. It was a fun build all the way through.
As someone who grew up with the original thing, I can say that this was an amazing build. I was more curious to see how they attempted to replicate the cartridge slot since it is the most unique thing about the NES. I'm even more surprised that they included the gaps for the external ports which, to my knowledge, were rarely if never used (only the Gamecube had a worldwide official external item to insert under the console). I do love the easter egg as well and the fact that the controller is one-by-one except the buttons which is expected. The TV was fun, yet I also faced the same issues regarding the mechanism. However, I must point out that my set had a missing piece, a tile for the skybox but LEGO did ship it rather quickly. It was the first, but not last time that this happened to me. But it was a great experience that easily matches up with the 1989 Batmobile. One could say that this Super Mario piece is the most unorthodox minifig ever.
Love seeing a new video on this build since I watched all the old ones already and I also build it myself. As a build, it's fantastic. All the mechanics coming together. And as already said earlier in the comments, the stickers are spot on, they are stickers on the real cartridge too!
Enjoyed your review of this set Jang! It was cool to see all the features Lego put into this set. To answer your question about the two ports on the back left side of the tv, those I believe are the horizontal and vertical adjustment screws. I remember those on those old CRT tv's. Banging the side of the set would work too! 😁
Yeah, was just scrolling to say this. We had a tv about this time in the UK with almost exactly this front and back panel layout, with speaker wire clamp sockets just like this!
Built this set myself and didn't even realize the easter egg as I was building it, but once I finished it and realized what it was I absolutely loved it, probably one of my favorite LEGO sets on display
Those two holes probably represent the vertical/horizontal sync or screen position adjuster. Perhaps even a color convergence adjuster. They are usually set inside the case so they are not easily changed.
TV's Grey hole guesses- "Vertical and Horizonal Hold" I think, you had to stick a screw driver in to turn them. If you messed it up it would make the picture flicker and roll across the screen.
I had an Atari 2600 in the early 80s that I spent way too much time playing River Raid. After that I graduated to a C-128 with a snazzy 1571 5.25" floppy drive. Those two "ports" in the back are likely horizontal and vertical alignment. Thanks for sharing!!!
Those unknown grey things on the left side of the TV,are dials to adjust vertical and horizontal size. Most old televisions had these you had to use a flat head screwdriver to adjust them
I was born in 1994, I've never owned a N64 much less an NES But this is so freaking cool, especially the TV and all the detail and the play features Could you customize the screen/mechanism to make different Mario levels?
as a big Nintendo fan I 100% love this set! And I hope they would do something similar with the SNES (and Super Mario World), or start a lineup of Lego replicas of the original consoles!!!!
Oh Woow! In my youth, I was more into Sega, I did play a little bit at the NES at the same time, but this Lego set is simply outstanding!! How cool is this? Extreme nostalgia factor!! Awesome!
The gray notches on bottom left of TV were on my old NES TV as well. They were to splice in wires little lifters you raised, put wire through and then lifters closed making the connection. I never had the device that made the connection but I always assumed speakers🤷🏻♂️
6:37 for people wondering, that is the end part of 1-2 from super mario brothers so it's not a entire level but it's cool seeing that they added the warp zones
If I was a couple years older I would be all over this. I do remember playing nes but my nostalgia is mostly tied to the snes since it was my first console
I have no real nostalgia or love for the NES. Came way before my time I've never owned or really played one. That being said, I can't deny that this is still pretty cool.
I think those grey bricks with the holes on the back are suppose to be your screw holes for screw in antenna prongs. They might've been better on the other side of TV with the other A/V plugs.
I have this, and the level of ingenuity and technical design elements in this set is something else. I paid $330 for this in Australia, and while there are better bargains around (the ideas Pirate Ship is only $300 but with about 2800 pieces) - the building experience is worth it. This is so well done down to the most minute detail - I cannot fault this set, especially with the potential to integrate it with the electronic Mario. Lego knocked it out of the park, in my opinion.
If i had enough money to buy this I would, I have no real nostalgia for the old Nintendo systems or the games for those systems (my first system was a DS with New Super Mario Bros and Super Mario 64) but this is still insanely cool and I love the compatibility with the electronic Mario
i didn't want to buy this, despite being an NES owner that is still in use. i somehow ended up with it anyway (weak moment) and it's one of the best builds of the last years ...
I am very close to that point. I thought it was pretty cool looking when I first saw it, but had no plans to get it. But then I watched this review and started asking myself, "dang that has so many cool features and looks like a really fun build, do I want this set after all?" But with the newest Star Wars wave reveal, I think I have to resist. Going to be an expensive summer as it is lol.
When I was a small child My parents had a TV like that late 80s early 90s but it blew up. Then when I was a teenager I had a old small TV just like this. I was more a Saga guy.
I think those stickers would’ve also been stickers in real life, in which case LEGO’s decision is totally justified
Ooh, hadn’t even thought of that. Very true.
You had to wack the sides of the TV to get it to work? That’s just another point for accuracy
Lol
I'm only 25 and had to do that... Our family still had old CRT tvs for a while till we got a Widescreen CRT. only got a Flatscreen in 2015...
You had to be careful not to get zapped by the static charge from the screen.
Now just to blow on the cartridge to fit it properly in the system

A jump that worked against players if I am honest as the jump in difficulty was wild.

@@AlbertoDsign if you are implying that super Mario bros is harder than most modern games than I think you are mistaken. Super Mario bros is quite easy
Me: I don't need this, both these companies already get too much of my money.
Jang: Prints! Easter Eggs! Functioning 1-1!
Me: *sweats profusely*
I can see someone going full Mario Maker by changing up the level layout on the screen.
I'm not a Nintendo fan, but that actually sounds pretty fun
People have done it, made it work entirely, and kept the functionality of the lego Mario.
I'm not at all a mario or nintendo fan but this is insanely cool
Me too, such an insane set, I might get it purely for how amazing the design was. Wow.
Same
When building the set I thought the easter egg was meant to be a suggestion of the inner electronics of the console and it was only after I saw it called an easter egg online that I realised what it actually was.
This one is on my super most wanted sets, the nostalgia is strong with this one.
My mom would have made the nostalgia noise
I loved putting together the tv screen. Felt like painting
It's like you inadvertently get the lines in the picture on the T.V as well!

I really love that the three stickered decals are the three things that would actually be stickers on the real thing.

When you turned the screen around on the TV, I made the Mario sounds, then Lego Mario came and did it for me.
It’d be just too crazy if you could use power up functions to make the tv run it’s self.
i mean, you can just add a motor to the crank on the outside ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If you geared down the motor so it doesn't turn too fast, that should be easy to do.
I don't think there is room inside for both the motor and batterybox but you could hook those up to the crank
you can probably adapt it to do so.
Maybe someone can modify the controller to button mashing features.

I'll take a guess at the two grey terminals back left. Spring loaded connectors for external speaker bare wires...?

I usually don’t buy any sets outside of the Star Wars line, but this is a set I just had to have. One of my favorite sets I own.
My first Memory of our TV is so old....the Crank on the side might have actually been there ^^
This would be one good exception for stickers in a few more places, like the controller, for that added authenticity
Ordered this a little while ago, SUPER excited about building it!
Nice touch. The easter egg level is the secret Warp level 😎

Quite a cool set. I think the cartridge insertion and release are my favourite part - it looks very satisfying.
