  • Nissan flew Jonny Smith and his yellow trainers to Yokohama to test drive the 2018 Nissan Leaf. He tries one pedal driving and soon I’ll be testing ‘pro pilot.’ This is the first of many episodes coming from Japan. Hope you enjoy them.

    The production quality of this channel is a top-notch. The music, b-rolls, camera angles make it nothing but a pleasure to watch, and over all of that we get an honest review of a new car, that we are all interested in. Thank you ;) :)

    Thanks Johnny for another great presentation. I love your style of presentation. So laid back and calm. Your videos are always sublime so much that I already know what I'll get before I watch them. Keep up the good work.
    I'm getting the New Leaf in March 2018. UK registration in red. I've driven a few electric cars before, but I have never owned one personally. I've even done a test drive of the Tesla Model S P100D just for fun since I can't actually afford that car to be honest. So the 2018 Leaf will be my first electric car ever. I'm actually quite excited. For some reason.

      9:53 I thoroughly appreciate your efforts in this review but most of the other reviews I've seen do not agree with the estimated *200 miles of range and mostly all state how the NEDC estimation of 235 is not what an average person will attain...maybe edit this...

      UK converting to KMs won't happen. Even as part of Europe we had a special dispensation to keep miles in the UK. In fact, it's unlawful to put up a road or pedestrian sign with the distance shown in meters. Local councils get into a lot of trouble for signs such as "Library 200 meters" and have to replace them. Now with Brexit, zero chance of a change and frankly, IMHO, good. Let's at least keep something British! :-)

    • @simhedges
      @simhedges 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      " Local councils get into a lot of trouble for signs such as "Library 200 meters" and have to replace them" - and not only because they are spelt incorrectly.
      If I ruled the world (well, the UK), i would phase out, over 10 years, all signs measuring in feet, yards and inches as they are now an anomaly in our measuring system - such signs should be in metres. After that, I'd have a think about miles.

      Good idea but the space and compartmentalisation requirements of electric vehicles and conventional cars are so different that it would not work out. This is why things like the e-golf have so little range. Their chassis are not made to hold huge batteries.

    needs an intuitive language adapter/translator feature, really enjoyed this session getting lost in Yokohama along for the ride with Jonny. As the car navi is politely indicating left turn ahead in soothing Japanese Jonny is dealing with disabling an inadvertent phone call, well i suppose the one pedal thingy would feel alien at this point, brilliant.. really liking this car, my round trip from San Diego to LA is just under 200 miles , range anxiety would be kicking in on the way home as the red lights start lighting up on the freeway, 300 mile range would provide enough anxiety free reserve, go go Leaf

    I can tell you who you were phoning :P the Japanese leafs have a feature where you can press that button and it puts you through to a call centre and you can tell them where you want to go and they can program that into your GPS remotely :P
    next time you have to use a car with a japanese head unit might i suggest using the google translate app on your phone, you can point the camera at it and it will translate it on the fly to english :P

      It is odd. Cm. metres and mm are used for most measurements of size/distance on a human scale, but the road signs are all in miles. Weights tend to be in KG but often have pounds and ounces displayed alongside the metric measurements.
      I know it doesn't make sense, but that's what is is. Anyway after Brexit we'll go back to weighing things in numbers of peasants, just like the olden days.

    Do you know if we’ll be able to upgrade the propilot system with just a system update or will only be available by buying the next versions of the leaf?

    • @iainansell5930
      @iainansell5930 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      and the same with battery range increase in 2019/20, is that an almost free retrofit or a cost option?

    • @SherrifOfNottingham
      @SherrifOfNottingham 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There might be a retrofit option but it will cost money even if it's just labor costs it's not going to be dirt cheap. If you think that in 1 year you're going to need to upgrade the battery pack because the 300 range is something you need, then it'd be better to hold out with your current car for 1 year till it comes out. If you're only commuting about 20-60 miles a day and just want the range for that spontaneous drive to vegas then buy it now and see if you really need the upgrade in a year.
      I drive maybe 3k miles a month in my car doing my job (average over 100 miles a day), so it's going to make a lot more sense for me to wait for that tasty 2019 model or Model 3 because I'd be cutting it too close for comfort, especially since the overhead for battery decay will be much more merciful.
      Also for the case of the pro-pilot I'd say that it might just be a system update, but considering that the hardware is missing from the prototype we saw on this channel a while back, it might require new sensor/computer packages. Honestly if that's a major deal breaker I'd, again, wait. If you're ok with selling the leaf in the year or five it takes to get the propilot 2.0 hardware then go ahead and buy it, understanding you may have to trade in to get a new car or spend quite a deal to get in retrofitted and be pleasantly surprised if it is just a software update.

      Be very careful with the Leaf here in Australia. It has no active thermal battery management, so neither fan nor supporting aircon to cool the battery pack. This will cause premature battery degradation in our hot climate.

      Yes, but come off after the car completely stops. Brake lights in e-pedal mode is associated with deceleration of the car, and come off after full stop since deceleration is zero when the car isn't moving. So actually you should use break pedal after the car stops. I think it's weird and hope it will be fixed soon.

    "We have a real-world 200 miles range here."
    Well, no you don't. The U.S. EPA rating (which matches real-world driving quite well) is 150 miles of range. Think about it. If it got 200 miles on a 40 KWh battery that would be 5 miles per KWh. No EV I have heard of gets that. Typically, EVs get between 3-4 miles per KWh. 150 miles is 3.75 miles per KWh, which sounds about right.

      I get anywhere between 3.6mi/kWh in winter and 4.7mi/kWh in summer (long averages over many weeks including heater/preheat in winter). With the improved efficiencies then 5mi/kWh in possible in summer. The question is the capacity, is it 40kWh usable? If it's only about 37kWh usable from the 40kWh battery then I see 185 miles real life summer range as possible.

    • @bassbacke
      @bassbacke 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      NEDC range is supposed to be 235 miles, that means 235*0.75 = 176 miles in real life. If the EPA rates this car 150 miles, I trust the NEDC figure even less. My 210 km NEDC Renault ZOE range really is 160 km real range (in the summer!). Never trust the NEDC range figures.

      The question is, how far do *you* drive in winter? How many people regularly drive more than 150 miles in winter? So, even lights, wipers and aircon going, it's still got more range than most drivers practically need.

    • @martinwray7001

      That's a very important point. Zoe ze40 has same size battery, active battery pack cooling / heating and still only has 120 miles of range in sub zero temperatures. The quoted 156 miles seems optimistic but I hope to be proven wrong as I'm looking for an affordable EV with a minimum range of 140 miles.

      Considering my 75D Tesla does about 450Wh/pm in the bad weather and would struggle to get near 200 mile round trip, I would say this would realistically do about 120-130 in the cold.
      On continuous run would be better of course. If you were to do short trips of 10 miles a day it'd probably add up to about 80 miles.

      Two charge ports for normal/slow
      charging would be great.
      I drive an i3 and wonder why they have placed the charge port in the back and the storage for cables in the front?
      The reason is probably distance to engine and associated power controller and heavy cables for fast DC charge.

    • @Ty4ons

      It's not just regen. The Leaf will also apply brakes to hold it on a hill and when there's little regen because batteries are cold or fully charged it will apply brakes instead.
      Personally I would just want control of the regen and a simple way of coasting.

    • @VSS1

    Johnny, don't just quote the range figures from the brochure. Every one knows the real world range of this 40kW leaf is 150 miles, not 200 miles. Yes you may be able to squeeze 200 miles from it, but only if you drive it at 35 mph on the flat with no uphill sections. The 250 mile (not 300 mile) version will be coming out next year at much increased price!

    • @gewdvibes
      @gewdvibes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      D Plummer I don’t know about “much” increased price. They probably waited until next year so that they didn’t have to charge so much extra for a bigger battery. Or else they would have released it already alongside this one as just an option

      @FFVoyager 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, reversing in and driving out is FAR more sensible. The charge ports in the nose of the Nissan and Renault makes me look at other vehicles.

    • @JeanPierreWhite
      @JeanPierreWhite 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem with a rear charging port is that it will be on one side or another, you can't put the charge port in the boot opening, nor can you put it low below the rear hatch.
      Therefore the charge cable may or may not reach the charge port due to a left or right position.
      Dead center makes a lot of sense and is superior IMHO. Front location it is.
      Another consideration. Do you reverse into your garage or drive in? My guess is you drive in as most people do. Most charging happens at the home, once again front placement is more flexible with regard to EVSE placement.

    • @FFVoyager

    26 minutes of fully charged
    Not a single word about charging.
    Nissan keeps pushing Japanese Chademo in Europe where Mennekses 2 is woted standard because in Europe you can find 3 phase outlests anywhere. In my apartment I have 2 11KW plugs which can charge this car in less than 4 hours. On single phase on normal plug you can not get more than 3.5KW.

    • @esunisen3862
      @esunisen3862 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ones that were in Oslo had CHAdeMO + type 2 single phase.

    • @Mladjasmilic
      @Mladjasmilic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Esunisen Type 2 has 5 big pins in order to support 3 phase onboard charger. Only way to get high power AC is over 3 phase. No household outlet is over 16A, which is just 3.5kW. Using same 16A but 3 phase you get 11kW.
      In order to charge in the wild, which mean at friends house, at pub, on service station with no dedicated EV charger, 3 phase is only way to get charged in normal time. Also, for home charging. If car has onboard 3 phasr charger, I could plug it in my garage in 8 hours it is fully charged. But if it had single phase only, and if battery is drained, you would need to wait almost 24 hours.

    • @bobsampson5122
      @bobsampson5122 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the US, we have single phase higher amperage NEMA standard plugs and receptacles for various purposes. Also, you can hard wire the connection and avoid the plug entirely. So maximum amperage depends on the circuit. Three-phase can lower the current per leg to deliver more power, but you have to start with commercial 480 VAC service (generally unavailable in residential areas) and use 3 transformers to get our standard 3-phase power at 208 VAC per leg.

    • @MrPhillipgraham
      @MrPhillipgraham 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry but that is wrong! You can have up to 7kW 32A charging point on a single phase domestic supply using a type 2 7-pin socket. For a 3 phase supply this increases to 22kW 32A per phase. I don't know what size charger is on the version 2 leaf but the first leaf only had a 3.6kW charger using a type-2 5-pin socket.
