    Living with an electric car for six months changed my mind about how I feel about them. I have range anxiety. When you're driving a Nissan Leaf, it has the equivalent energy in the battery pack of less than two gallons of gasoline. That not only tells you how energy dense gasoline is, but also how wildly efficient electric cars are, as the Leaf gets 150 miles on the equivalent of 1.2 gallons of gas.
    And while the benefits of electric cars are clear, for example instant torque, quiet ride, low CG, and much more emissions friendly, they do come with lower range and longer recharging times versus filling a gasoline tank. So after living with a 151 mile range Nissan Leaf for 6 months, how do I now feel about EVs? Quite different, actually. Check out the video for full details!

      Engineering Explained hey Jason, don't you think that hybrid cars are much better option that it gets 50-60 mpg with the reliability of the existence of gas and being so cheap to operate makes it so close to operating an ev, so why not have a boring Prius that holds much higher value over the years and the you saved money over a long amount of time in value depreciation and high mpg

      I had a 2013 Lead SL for 2 years a this is spot on. This is what I've always said. We have a 2017 Volt now and it is the perfect car for the time, for us.

      @@SuperYinzer And some of us drive less than 50 miles per day and have multiple EV charging stations at work to plug into.
      My next daily is going to be an EV. Either a stupidly cheap used one (likely a Volt), or something with a super cheap lease deal.
      An EV is a daily that I'm not going to want to screw with (aside from maybe wheels and coilovers on a Volt, just because I think it would look dope slammed).

      @@Silent_Shadow They did? The Model S starts at $65,000 and is a well-equipped luxury car. The Model 3 starts at just under $35,000 and is meant to compete with cars like the BMW 3-Series. Tesla may not make a bare-bones economy hatchback but these are pretty competitive prices for what the cars actually are.

      Cheapest M3 Tesla in Canada is about 80K with 3300 red paint - ridiculous! Repair costs are astronomical and many companies won't insure them or have very high rates

    My family owns a 2018 Nissan Leaf and so far it has been a great experience owning it. I am 17 and so although I’m not the one who bought the car I can say that we bought it for around $20k us after tax rebates. That’s about the same as a base Civic and the Leaf was also brand new. As Jason pointed out it is more convenient to have a place to charge the car, and like most people our garage is way too junky to fit a car. All we had to do was run the charging cable under the garage door and bam we can charge it in the drive way. I also want to note that the car has been $0 in maintenance over 2 years. Yes we haven’t put hundreds of thousands of miles on it but there is less to go wrong. Lastly, the single pedal mode has been really nice in stop and go traffic. Hope this helps someone out there thinking of buying an electric car.

      You should maybe consider replacing the gear oil every 100,000 miles.
      Surprised you have not had to replace the tires yet.

    Very good review. I used to have a 24kwh one before and that just didn't have enough range, especially in the winter. The 40kwh hour one with about 130 to 140 miles range is just perfect for me for 99% of my needs. The missus drives a Kia Niro PHV and we use that for long trips. Perfect combination.

      This one is the newest and 'fanciest' we've ever had, and it's 15 years old and has an approximate value of $3000 at most.
      To put that in perspective, my collection of retro and modern games and consoles combined very likely are worth double that.
      Hell, the lego from my childhood is worth more than that. (though that's a bit misleading since old lego is actually disproportionally valuable - the rate of appreciation of lego - well, sealed sets, but second hand is still pretty high up there is in the region of 20% a year, which is a lot higher than most investments you can think of).
      So... Yeah. Car... Not so valuable. XD

      Several of my neighbors have both their cars parked in the driveway. Garages full of stuff. Stuff is why l have a basement. The garage is for my cars. Which is nice in winter!

    Don't be confused by the bottle. That is eNOS. Nissan/Nismo sells them in the parts department to give extra acceleration like the Tesla Ludicrous mode.

      It comes with a holesaw that you use to put a hole through the boot/trunk lip and bumper. You connect up the included solenoid valve to the throttle pedal, position the eNOS bottle with the valve poking out through the hole you just drilled in your pristine car and it'll open the valve when you floor it, giving you an extra boost of acceleration.

    Great video. Note that even without a garage, a charger installed outside is equally as convenient. And yes, they work fine and safely in the rain.

    Thanks for an honest and well reasoned explanation on the pros and cons of electric cars. Too many people of influence are trying to convince us that we can do away with petrol / diesel cars. Anyone contemplating long distance driving, or anyone without a private parking space with a power socket, should not even consider buying an electric car, unless there is a quantum leap in battery technology.

      I have a 2017 Sequoia. I get flack for buying it because it doesn't have any "TECH". Good! I bought it to haul 4 kids and my Travel Trailer. I bought it for its stellar reliability versus a brand spanking new vehicle. I didn't buy it to keep me awake and stay in the lanes. I'm fine with basic bluetooth I don't need Android auto to distract me when I'm driving.

    Great review! I purchased a 2017 SV last month and so far it’s great. My previous cars were 2016 Maxima SV, 2012 E350 coupe, and this one so far has to be my most favorite! It’s definitely been a cash saver - especially in this unpredictable climate. I do however, live in an apartment community that claims to be “Green” but they don’t have a charging station. I have to plug my car around the corner - which is fine, but it would be great to be able to plug it up at home. Glad I found this video!

    Something most reviews seem to miss -
    in my 2015 Leaf if I turn on the heater it will drain the battery very quickly
    (so I only use the heated wheel and seat)
    and the a/c uses more battery than I would like so I use the fan or have the windows down
    and to my surprise - if I turn on the cruise control it takes away a significant amount of range.
    If you wait till later to plug in the charger - you will get up one morning to use the car
    and it will be near empty and you will say bad words.

      A woman put a video here on TH-cam about what it’s like living with a Nissan leaf. She lives where it gets cold in the winter, I think it was Kentucky or Tennessee. She said when she first gets in the car in the morning and turns the key on after the charger was plugged in all night, it will display how many miles of range the battery has. In the summer, it displays about 50 miles more range than in the winter. because her Nissan leaf does not have more than 100 miles of range in the winter, she drives her husband’s Ford 4 x 4 pick up truck to and from work and her husband takes the Nissan leaf because he only works 20 miles from home.
      she also said the heater is not very good at all, and neither is the air conditioning..Also, you can’t take the car just to the corner garage you’ve been going to for decades for service. It Hass to go back to the dealer to have a qualified mechanic trained and working on electric cars work on the car. And that is not cheap, and it may take you weeks to get an appointment..
      there’s another guy that has a Nissan leaf that he picked up for a song because it needs a battery. Charging the battery all night only gets him around 50 miles of range, which is fine with him because he only lives 7 miles from work… his Nissan leaf that he bought really cheap only has 40somethousand miles on it. But it is an older model. And the cost of putting a new battery in alone is more than the value of the car. That’s why he got the car really cheap..
      A man in Sweden or Norway or somewhere like that put a video of him blowing up his Tesla. It’s a really good job of multiple camera angles. The video is on TH-cam. The reason he decided to blow up his Tesla is, the cost of the battery replacement.

      My personal leaf experience is no range reduction from cruise control usage, but it might change estimates when you turn cruise control on at high speed as now it 'knows' you'll be travelling at that speed for a little while.
      Wrt the heater it comes on crazy fast compared to an ice heater since it isn't dependent on engine heat, but it does indeed burn through your battery pretty fast. Then again, in my experience you don't need it on much. I haven't noticed any big range differences due to weather, but have when it comes to heater usage.
      For reference, 30kwh 2016 leaf is what I'm driving. Your mileage will definitely vary from model to model.

    the whole "don't start charging directly after use" issue could just be solved by the system monitoring the battery temperatures and delaying the charging process for however long it takes to cool down.

      Great point! And it should be an issue that the manufacturer implements a solution for regardless, so the driver doesn't have to think about it. Nissan does allow you to set a timer for when to start charging, so that is a solution.

      @@EngineeringExplained Not charging while warm could easily be fixed in firmware, simply turn on a cooling fan, charge at a very low rate till the battery is cool, or just not charge if hot till it cools down, and then keep the charge rate low till the battery is either full, the temperature is low or if you have as part of the charger a timer that allows you to choose a departure time that it should reach for full charge. That would also allow off peak power use, and improve battery life. Active cooling however does mean that you use power to do so, out of the battery bank, IIRC this translates on a Tesla to 1% per day at worst ambient to keep the battery conditioned, not so good if it is low charge anyway.

      @@SeanBZA If it's only running the active cooling when it's charging, it could be directly powered off the charger instead of going through the battery so it doesn't create that bootstrapping problem of needing battery charge to cool the battery so it can be charged.

      On mine I just use the timers, to get my charge before work. but it's kinda of a pain in the leaf. I only charge to 80% usually. So I need to look at one screen to see how long it will take. and then figure out in my head with the start time for my timer should be.

      His claim that you'd need to come back out to the car to plug it in, after it's cooled down for a while after you return from work is ignorant. Just program the charge to start overnight, and be ready again the next morning. It only takes programming it once, and leaving it in that mode, so when you plug in, the car already knows what to do.
      If you're going back out later and need charge, just change the mode to charge immediately before you plug in. The battery is happier, and you get what you need. All that said, it sounds like Nissan really did improve their battery chemistry to tolerate heat better than their old ones, the 30 kWh batteries in particular.

    didn't mention there's almost no maintenance. no oil changes, filter changes, tuneups, mufflers burning out, antifreeze checks and change and brakes almost last forever because of regen.

      By the time I can afford one, they'll be junk like old Netbooks, ...I don't do a lot of miles, so they don't make sense for me even if I could buy one new. I can keep old cars going, ...what I can't do is manufacture batteries and Ipads. (I'm not at all anti-EV, there's just no situation where one will make sense for *me* unless I got a lot richer and logged more daily miles.)

      @@OllamhDrab this is a situation most drivers find themselves in. The makers were hoping to change this but ...range, life expectancy of batteries, length of charge time, load carrying capacity, etc., etc. Were all contributors to stagnant sales.
      On the flip side the car companies are getting ahead of the fossil fuel rollercoaster and investing heavily in order to stay ahead of the game called "oil embargo". Makes perfect sense.

    I’m the opposite of Jason when it come to range anxiety. When the warning light comes on my car tells me I have like 50-70 km of range left, but I know that when the displayed range drops to zero, I can probably still go another 50 km.
    Zero kilometres left is nothing to break a sweat if you only have to drive 15 km to work.

      @@soapbox187 It wasn't just one tipping point. It made going anywhere a hassle. Driving it was fun with instant torque, but the range is incredibly low (~80 if you drive slooooow, ~60 if you actually drive) compared to other EV models on the market. My parents live on a mountain so the trip takes longer due to charging at a small mall and then the cold weather stops the battery from charging. Traveling to LA is a pain because charge stations are sparse and then I would have to walk a few miles to get where I needed. Also, a lot of other EV owners aren't respectful and just leave their cars parked at a charging station when they're done charging. I've also had people vandalize the charging station I would park my car at. People unplug cars all the time. I've had people in cars roll over the charger hose on purpose so you can't charge your car. EV's are just not for me or my lifestyle.

      I guess, you'll have to live without a car then. Because fossil fuel powered cars have no future. It's impossible to stop global warming without going to zero fossil fuels (in all sectors in the entire world).
      And since the whole world has signed the paris agreement and therefore agreed to keep warming well below 2°C fossil fuel powered cars clearly have no future. I must say i regard what you're doing as pretty selfish. Such decisions slow down the necessary change and keep fossil fuels alive even though we all know that we have to get rid of them.
      And what kind of electric car only goes has a 60 mile range?! I have the cheapest electric car you can get (it's new though) and even it has a range of 150 to 190miles.

      Hydrogen will likely not have a future in cars, unless it gets considerably more efficient. Hydrogen will be important for energy storage in a completely renewable energy system, but it's a bad idea to use it in cars. Why? Because it uses 2-3 times the amount of energy for the same travelled distance compared to an EV. Producing liquid synthetic CO2 neutral fuels and burning them in normal cars is even worse. It would require 5-6 times the amount of energy an EV would need. Biogas is another option to power your car with or wood gas. But i don't see those becomming available either (and it would be a good idea anyway).
      So the future is clearly electric in terms of cars. Expanding public transport would of course be an even better option, travelling with a bicycle even better and allowing people to travel less distance is better yet.
      Those are pretty much the option you have without causing enormous damage to our planet and the life on it (including humans for many generations). What we're doing now will determine the climate of the next 10'000 years. We're just casually deciding what the climate is going to be like for countless generations to come.

    I haven't read all 10,000 comments so maybe this has been said before. My '22 Leaf S+ does have a telescoping steering wheel although I have seen several reviewers say Leaf doesn't. Don't know when Nissan did the upgrade. Regarding not charging immediately when reaching home, there is a delayed start timer so an extra trip to the garage is not necessary. Another tip that I haven't seen in any reviews is that you can configure E-pedal ON to be the default, which is great because once you quickly adapt to it you'll always want it.

    i just drove a leaf overnight and I found out what range anxiety really is . It was like having to go to the rest rooms and trying to find a clean restroom on the road .

      Ryan I had range anxiety on my Honda Goldwing motorcycle. Because I only got 33 miles to the gallon, and even though it had a 7 gallon gas tank, it did not have a reserve setting on the petcock because it didn’t have a petcock. When you run out of gas on a Goldwing, you are out of gas, that’s not very common on motorcycles to not have a petcock. So as a result, I was filling up every time the gauge got near 1/2 call me if you can trust the gauge..
      as for trying to find a clean restroom..I much rather prefer ducking into the woods with a packet of baby wipes i always carry instead of toilet paper,even if it is raining..

    The one question I have is this: How well do the modern electric cars maintain a charge in extreme cold weather? I read about the first Tesla's quickly losing their charge in New England when the temps were in the 20's and wondered if that was still a problem.

      The short answer is that it depends. If the car has a liquid cooled battery, as the majority these days will, then it will still use some power to maintaining the battery's temperature. How much it uses will vary from one manufacturer to the next. If the car has an air cooled battery, like the LEAF and the pre-2020 Kia Soul EV, then it won't lose a measurable amount; technically it will lose *some*, but nowhere even remotely near the 10% per day that older Teslas used to. The main drawback to an air cooled battery, at least in the cold of winter, is that if the car was parked outside and not charging immediately before you start driving, then it will use a little more power per mile (as long as you're not like my boss who stomps the throttle to the floor at every stop sign and traffic light; if that's you, then you'll see very noticeable losses and serious battery degradation regardless of how it's cooled).
      Personally, with my conservative driving habits and the fact that I can only use the trickle charger on both ends of my commute, I had to choose the LEAF for its air cooled battery (the ergonomics and ride quality also helped). With winter temps of -10F being fairly common, and summer temps over 90 being UNcommon, the liquid cooling system in the majority of EVs holds no value for me; and in fact becomes a considerable liability. Wasting 25 to 40% of the power that comes through the charge connector in a futile attempt to heat the battery is unacceptable to me, and frankly a deal breaker. Most don't care, but I do.
      And now, let us brace for the mob of Tesla foamers who are going to blindly tell me that I'm wrong for choosing my LEAF.

      yeah, but how long are your road trips? you need to charge once every 3 hours or so for 30-45 minutes if you have the latest Leaf. If you buy the Ioniq 5, it's 15 minute coffee breaks once every 4 hours. If you buy a Tesla, probably even less often that that.

If someone is saying "I can't drive electric because I do long road trips", that person should calculate how much longer those road trips will take with an electric car due to charging. Then, given that number compare that value to the cost of driving gas (tip, it's more than electric). So, how much are those charging hours vs. gas cost in total over time you own the car? Compare that to most people's salaries, I bet it'll be a good deal.

    I use the Nissan Leaf to deliver groceries with Shipt, I live in a congested area with hills and I have a level two charger at home. 4 hours of charge for about 6 dollars gives me about 160 miles of range and the savings with gas pretty much pays for the car and it costed me 12 grand after the initial down payment, not as much maintenance not even close compared to all the problems associated with internal combustion and all the metal under the car, less corrosion under the car...so many benefits.

    People overestimate how much range they need. Most people rarely drive over 100 miles. Yet when getting an electric comes up tons of people suddenly proclaim they just may want to. They just want the option. Like an exercise bike.

      YEs, but that 100 is under ideal conditions - last winter, with my leaf in Boston in 10-15 degree weather, I would be sweating bullets going 20 miles down the road to go shopping. At that temp, the heat pump doesn't work and it has to go full resistance heating - and the heating is not optional because the windows fog up without it. Combine that with the lower range of the cold battery, and you're lucky to get 70. That's hardly enough to go anywhere in the Boston metro. Electrics are nice for a lot of reasons, but I wouldn't buy another leaf...

      Yeah, I guess I over estimated the distance from my house to Los Alamos, NM as 102 miles... and the need to drive that round trip 2-3 times per week. People base their assumptions (and resulting declarations of "fact") on where they live, and assume that's how the rest of the United States works for distances.

      I'm the atypical motorist. I don't use my car for commuting, mostly to visit family and the occasional mall visit and then, it is my plane. I do all my summer holidays on wheels. So I'm not substituting a bus or bicycle but air trips. Buying an electric car with such infrequent use, battery heating and self discharge will give me 50-60% overall efficiency so it will not make any sense environmentally.

    I really appreciate your video, I am a 40-year-old male that always believed in gasoline. But the basic fundamental reason for owning a car is to go point a to point B.
    I will definitely keep my gas guzzler Tahoe. But I’m definitely considering a basic electric car for my every day use.
    Going to work, kids to school, kids to functions. Don’t need a big old truck to do that all the time.

    I recently returned a leaf that was defective.BUT ENJOYED IT WHILE IT WAS WORKING PROPERLY. wish it would of been a new leaf!!! They are very comfortable.

    I leased the old Nissan Leaf, with arounf 85 mile range. I wanted to make sure of what I was getting into. Very good experience, for all the reasons mentioned in the video, even better when I installed a serious charger at my house, instead of relying on a 110 outlet.
    I had to baiil out on the Leaf when I relocated beyond the suburbs, just before retiring. Had the one with 150 miles been available then, I would have held onto it. I may have another one in my future. I still check the used car market on them from time-to-time.

    I too have range anxiety. (Came from being stuck on the side of the road with no help.) I elected to buy a plug in hybrid insteas of full electric. Now I'm fully aware that a 100 mile range car is well within my range. I've gone well over two month on electric with only 20 mile battery range.

      I looked at a Volt before I bought my Leaf. The back seat of the Volt is non-existent. I could fit me and one car seat and that's it. In my Leaf I can get out of the drivers seat and sit comfortably in the back seat without moving the drivers seat.

    I own a 2015 Nissan Leaf and for a family car...its the best car I've ever owned. Driving kids back and forth to school, grocery shopping and everything in between...nothing beats it. I do tell people the same thing...if its your only car...don't get a leaf and if you don't know what your future holds (relationship, job, living situation, etc)...maybe an electric car isn't for you.

    I recognize this video is almost three years old but I have to comment on one thing you said. The Leaf batter is passively cooled (not cooled at all really) the '96-"03 Toyota RAV 4s were air cooled. Two large fans forcing air through the battery pack. I owned a 2002 and have friends with the same cars. We have taken three battery packs apart over the last few years because after nearly 20 years they are starting to fail. At the same time the 2011-13 Leaf batteries are failing due to lack of cooling. Air cooling works better than Nissan's total lack of cooling but not as good as liquid cooling.

    I have a leaf that has 79 miles of range and cost $7500 and it has been the best town run about I have ever had. I plug in to a wall outlet when I need to charge. I have never had to charge at a different station. We have a Subaru Outback as our trip car.

      Are the charging stations just for quick charging?
      If you have a charging station, how convenient is it to use (if you back in rather than nose in to park, do the cables still reach the charging port easily)?
      How much was it to get a charging station installed (if you have one)?
      How much does maintenance cost you annually as compared to the usual lube/oil/filter servicing?
      What are the mileage based maintenance items (like on a regular car, oil change every 3,000 miles, transmission fluid every 6,000 - 9,000 miles, new spark plugs at 25,000 miles etc.)?

      @@MichaelDavis-cy4ok I have never had to use a public charging station. At home I have a 120 charger that came with the car. It's a long charger that plugs into a regular outlet. I can charge the car completely in 10 hours. The thing is, I only charge everything three or four days and I plug it in overnight. Its a long cord so I can park it how ever I want in my driveway.
      Maintenance is only tires. I replaced the tires at 25k miles. It really is an appliance that is essentially a comfortable golf cart.

      I would just recommend it with the reservations given in this video. It’s a good 2nd car if you are in a two car house hold. I bought a used Leaf for my daily driver and it gets the job done and is saving me a lot on gas (it costs about 1/3 to operate like the video stated). But if you are anywhere close to needing 60 plus miles in a day be cautious. Especially now that it’s getting cold out, I can use 80% of my battery on my 50 mile round trip commute. And some days when it gets that low, 12 hours of charging over night doesn’t give me a full charge and I end up taking the gas car to work because I don’t want to get stuck! Worst case there are a bunch of public charge stations out there (check the PlugShare website or app), so you won’t get stranded. This is also because I’m cheap and charge with a wall outlet instead of getting a 240v charger installed in my garage.
      To answer your other questions:
      The charge cable is just long enough to reach around the front of the car if you back in. It’s very easy and convenient to use.
      To get a level 2 (240v) charger installed in my garage, i was quoted around $1400 to run the line, which has to go underground to get to my garage. You can look up home chargers online. I was going to get a clipper creek model for $400.
      I’ve only owned the car for a few months so can’t say much for maintenance costs. There are blogs you can read up on to get some more info. Should just be tires, brakes, brake fluid. Annual cabin air filters. No oil changes or fluids to change. 12v battery will need replacing every few years. You are supposed to have the dealer perform a battery check every year for the warranty.

      @@dentistguba I think this is the problem. On a road trip you don't want 3 hour charging times while the battery is in protection mode. The new leaf will have active cooling for the battery and more range.

      Not having active thermal management for the battery was the key mistake that Nissan made with the Leaf. It could have been a great car, but they made that one crucial blunder.

      yep, if you commute daily, that's one of the best options, if I'm not mistaken in my math, if you are 30 miles from your workplace (so 60 miles a day), you save 22 bucks per week, that's more or less 1000 bucks a year, so over 5 years you save 1000 bucks by getting a $10k electric over a $6000 used "equivalent" gas guzzler.

      A lot of unstated assumptions above. What's your fuel economy on the gas car? What is the price per gallon? what is the per KwH electric rate? What is efficiency of the electric car in miles/KwH? An example in my case given gas at $3/gal my electric is $0.14/KwH. comparison fuel economy is 25 mpg (old Camry) Electric efficiency 4.2 mi/kwh. Electric cost per week (300mile/4.2)*0.14 = $10 , Gas cost per week: (300/25)*3 = 36. Difference $26. Annual savings $1300 (assumes 50 weeks at work /per year) So the $4000 difference in price would be paid off in less than 4 years by fuel cost savings. Perhaps you had better recheck the math???

      Why EV's are fun. While my credit was still good, I thought about jumping on the Fiat 500e for $99 a month three year lease. Why not? For quick trips around town they are great. I live in Los Angeles (SFV) all area malls have 220 chargers plus there are chargers around the city because of the first Chevy EV years ago.

      What I find most impressive is the fact that I'm a gear head who turned his daily into a big turbo racecar (really) and then bought another daily with a 3.2l vr6 (the significance being that they're mediocre on gas milage at best). I never thought I'd genuinely consider AND GET EXCITED about owning an EV. My commute is roughly around 30 miles one way, mostly through traffic (so spirited driving is non-existent; OBAY THOSE TRAFFIC LAWS) and I'm spending around $30-$40/week on gas. I guess it just comes down to me getting old, or Jasons just that good at converting people. Or maybe it's both. Who knows? 🤔

      I switched to a Renault Zoe with between 60 and 90 miles range (weather dependent) and have a home charger, it's hardly ever a problem, and when it is the charging networks are getting bigger and better by the day. So happy I switched.

    My only car is a BMW i3 with the 19kWh Battery (60Ah). My plan was to rent a car if needed as the BMW i3 is sufficent for my daily driving to work, visiting friends etc. I own it now for 3,5 years and funny enough i never needed to rent a car :D.

      Yes, I have a similar recommendation I tell my friends. Get a car that suites for 95% of your situation. IE: don't buy a minivan just because you may buy lumber from Home Depot once a year.

    I have a 2015 Leaf with the 24kwhr battery. The range was 84 miles when new. It's only dropped off to 74 miles after nine years which is plenty for most trips. I charge it overnight at home parked outside. Amazing vehicle. Very happy with it.

    Tell me, Jason. If you drive your electric rather like your IC car and "fill 'er up" when it gets to a 25% charge on your 110 volt garage charger...how long does it take to charge back up to 95% charge - assuming you don't cook the battery? My pickup - with its huge diesel tank - takes 8 minutes.

    Instead of asking people not to charge after immediate use, they should simply allow the charge to flow only when the battery temperature is favorable.

      The problem with that is sometimes you want to take the hit, so to speak, and charge while hot. Like if you're not done going where you need to go, but have to stop and charge. You don't want to wait an hour for the car to cool _before_ it starts charging. You want to charge and go. But if you're parking for the night, then yeah, who cares if it waits to cool and then trickle charges.
      The ideal solution is what he said: Use better cooling. A second best solution, I think, is to give you the option, like a switch beside the charging port, for example: 1) Charge now I don't care. 2) Safe charge.

      A simple external timer would give you that option, but most 3rd party charging units allow you to set when charging should start, as many places have different rates for power based on time of day.

      He mentioned that: better battery management system. We plug our EV in but it is set to only start charging when the electric rates drop after 9 pm. Just that would solve 2 problems for the Leaf.

      M-B has addressed that problem in their new GQ series. Now you can plug-in and walk away and the Battery Thermal Management unit pauses the charging till such time as the optimum temp is reached.

      That sounds like it has a high potential for ya to walk away, have dinner and come back and find the thing hasnt charged by a single % because the battery system didn't see fit to charge. Sounds more annoying then anything else.

    Thanks for that insight! While it is a surprisingly underwhelming car I am extremely excited about the Dacia Spring that's said to come to the the retail market in September. It has that same range of 200 and a mediocre motor, so acceleration remarks don't quite apply, but it ticks all the boxes for me, my driving style and 99% of my commutes, and it looks *accessible* after incentives. Otherwise it's all theoretical discussion. Access to this technology is what we need for widespread adoption.

    In the old days of converting a car to electric (before Tesla, before the leaf, etc) they would say you could take your savings from driving the EV and use it to rent a petrol car for that once or twice a year road trip.

    The plug-in hybrids might be more desirable for someone who lives alone and can only have one car. The car can give decent range for in town driving before the gas motor is started and you could go on a road trip for 500 miles before refueling. I currently have a ford fusion energi and charging up gives me a little over 20 miles electric which gets me around town pretty well and I generally make it back home before the motor kicks on. I also go to a school 30 miles away from me and if theres enough traffic on the freeway I can make it all the way to school on one charge and charge up at school. The tank in the car is significantly smaller than most cars but it means less gas to fill up and I get over 500 miles on hybrid. Overall, a plug-in isn't as green as a pure ev but it does make sense for anyone who lives a small distance from work or school and may need to make the occasional road trip.       Nicole Maggard true but I think PHEVs are a stop gap solution and will depreciate heavily when fully electric range improves.

    I have a leaf,it’s a great car in all departments.I use a household outlet to charge it over night so it’s always at full charge.

    Excellent analysis of the sense in buying electric. Can't dispute anything you said. I'm so impressed with your videos because first, you know what you're talking about. Many on youtube don't. Second, you explain it all in such an understandable fashion.

      When you fill up your EV you don't pay the state and federal highway taxes so the comparison is wrong. Your cost to fill up the EV depends on region and may include on peak surcharges. Average gas taxes are $0.54 per gallon. Average electricity cost is$ 0.25 per KWH.
