I completely relate to how this couple cares and plans for the welfare of this sweet little one. My dogs have always been in my wills (I have had to update each one when a dog passes). My current Yorkie is not only in my most current will, but also travelling with me abroad. Unlike the owner who gave Emma up in order to move to Hawaii, I went through the complicated quarantine process to take my dog to Hawaii, as well as to Japan, where we are now visiting for at least a year. My dogs have always been like my child. I could never voluntarily give them up.

Thank you for highlighting the legacy planning involved! Any of these sweet creatures that live well beyond our own life span should be well taken care of... They deserve a thoughtful plan to be established at the time of adoption. Thanks for bringing awareness!!! Much love 💕😊

My parents had an Umbrella named Pearl who just adored me when I visited my folks between business trips. My folks also had two hilarious talking African Grays, who along with Pearl were the best talkers and did not just parrot our language, they used words to ask for things. Every time we had Spaghetti, the African Gray's and Pearl's favorite food, one of them would say "Here" meaning they wanted it too.
Pearl just loved me to death but would scare away my parent's cat Shelly, a Tortoise Shell Cat who crushed on me the very first moment my parents rescued her from a rescue center.
Even my fiance then said she was jealous of Shelly's affection to me.
As my parents passed on, ten years apart, their birds and my Mom's final home was willed to me, my wife and widowed sister in law. Managing her small estate, I found a bird club woman with experience and care in handling birds, who came and gathered them all for us to pass them on to forever homes.
Since my wife, sister in law and I worked long hours, we could not care for the birds the way my retired folks did--they are indeed a life long investment and I did not want to sell them--they were like family to me and my wife and daughter.
A few weeks after one of the African Grays was given to a single young woman, she called me and said "I have a bird that knows naughty language, she uses it when I hurt myself while cooking" and I laughingly told her she learned that from my Mom...

I'm so happy for them to be so content with life and I hope they can just be happy on this world with all the friends that they might make. God bless them all. My first umbrella cockatoo was 16 weeks old when I got him. I got him without knowing a thing about parrots and cockatoos in particular. I got him for the same reason most people get cockatoos. They’re cute, cuddly, charming and funny. Fortunately I was willing to educate myself about them. Most people, when the novelty wears off, discover they just aren’t willing to put the work and time in it takes to look after cockatoos. That’s how I ended up with two more umbrella cockatoos. They came to me with all sorts of bad behaviours due to neglect and, in one case, abuse. One was a year old and the other 4 years old. That was 30 years ago. I adore my noisy, destructive birds but I worry about their future. I’m 60 years old now and these birds have another 40-50 years in them and I don’t. I live on the prairies in western Canada and there aren’t any rescues I can will them to nor do I have any children or relatives who would take them. They are very social animals and need a lot of attention. They are so darn cute and adorable too. I love them.

Gosh I hope they are aware of the possibility of raptors swooping down & stealing her. They go on trips to various places, so how do they know there aren't raptors around? I read about it in the comments section of a story about another bird. One woman was still guilty and traumatized years after it happened to her bird that she took outside. She had never gotten over the guilt and remembering what happened years later and stated that she was crying while writing her comments.

As an Aussie who has done wildlife and bird courses, I was initially confused by your use of the term "umbrella cockatoo", as I have never heard it before.
Eventually figured it out to be referring to Emma's crest: we would call her a sulphur-crested cockatoo, or just call her a cockie. They are indeed gorgeous, cheeky and smart larikins, who people love and loathe in equal amounts for their ability as both solo and flock birds to be destructive of everything from buildings (there was a flock near where I lived in inner Sydney who spent ages happily ripping insulation foam off a multistorey building: I noticed this one morning on my way to work when I wondered what the white stuff that was piled up like snow on the footpath in the local shopping centre was!)
to trees (I would watch them rippling into big pine trees to get at the grubs under the bark).
They are notorious for opening people's garbage bins and pulling out the trash within (although they then don't eat it!) and other cheeky acts of pure vandalism.
However even the farmers whose crops they raid (this used to happen almost every day where I recently lived opposite a small walnut plantation: the couple who owned it used loud but non-poisonous and non-lethal gas powered "bang" cannons in an ongoing attempt to scare them off: it didn't work for long, and it wasn't like these birds lacked their native foods to eat, as the area is surrounded by many many miles of state forest!) have a respect for these long lived "clowns of the bush".
Loved the video and your commitment to her: I remember when the American pet trade discovered these birds back in the 70s, and I even had one pet store owner in San Francisco who twigged my Australian accent (I had wandered in, intrigued by a sulphur-crested being on sale) asking me quite openly if I could obtain such birds back home for him.
He was not happy when I explained I was running Greenpeace Australia, was in the US visiting local branches, and was opposed to and involved in preventing the trafficking of native species for the pet trade!

No matter what the expected lifespan of your nonhuman family members is, you need to provide for them in your will, just as you would if you had human dependents. After necessary expenses to settle my estate, the priority in my will is funding attached to any cats I’m living with, and a short list of people to contact whom I consider likely to be good guardians and have agreed to consider adopting them if that time comes. I feel a lot of comfort not worrying that if I get hit by a bus the people I love will be abandoned at a shelter.

I think it's cause my dad works everyday and really makes a loud noise when he walks out. Personally I tthink teh bird is bonded to my dad like a mate and she doesn't want to be there alone although when I'm there and leave she whist les also.

A yeh I wanna find this guy , it’s been a hard long road we’ve come from me not being able to put my hand in his cage to He’s sitting on my lap getting pettings as I write this comment , he’s my best buddy we’re together all day , he doesn’t get vocal unless he doesn’t see me or when it’s time to wake up at daybreak and wants out to come be by me , he doesn’t talk and I’m not sure if he’s male or female as he😢s not gotten a DNA test , I don’t know his age ? As a near life long parrot companion since 1988, I can really relate. My first bird, a cherry head conure I found at a feed store. He wasn’t hand tame, so I spent the first 6 months hand taking him. Everyday multiple times a day we’d do one foot on the training stick the other on my finger. Then he got scared of my finger in front so I put one finger behind him asked him 1 foot. He then did that many times a day for another 3 months. Then one day he jumped onto my finger both feet and neither of us ever looked back. I did get him a companion to keep company when I had to work. She was a severe macaw. She lived 27 years and then passed unexpectedly. My then conure was devastated as was I 💔
After she died he started letting me touch him in places he never felt comfortable before and that led to him climbing down my shoulder when I sat in the chair to my elbow, turn around and bury his head in my chest bowing his head, asking me to preen him. 🤷🏼‍♀️
In the end he’d be in my lap most nights getting endless preens! He especially loved his wings rubbed. And he would relax into a zombie mode bird. At bedtime he’d pop his head up and start wichit sounds asking me to put him to roost. He played birdie soccer, peek a boo and lived to sing and dance! He passed after we were together 34 years. He’s sorely missed

They were so well spoken and did a great job explaining a lot of what it's like to have a Cockatoo. Maybe more people will do their research now since he talked about classes for potential owners!

That's the sweetest thing l've ever seen. Emma is so adorable, so sweet, so smart. The laughing with you, the pedicures, so fascinating how amazing these birds are. I so love them. I'm too old to adopt one now, but wish l had done it earlier in my life.
