I feel like this episode is such an important turning point for Korra and Asami's relationship. We've seen their friendship develop especially in book 3. But after this episode, it becomes quite clear that their feelings for each other are developing into something else and while nickelodeon wouldn't let it be completely out there, all the signs are there: Asami complements Korra's new look and Korra blushes bc of it; Asami proves herself (again) to be quite a match to Korra in a fight scene, being more resourceful than Mako, and Korra understands Asami's plan without exchanging a word; Asami worries for Korra's health and also resents Korra for being away for so long. Finally, the fact that Korra and Asami are butting heads all the time during the episode, something they never did before even in that whole love triangle situation, and at the end Mako says that's how his relationship with Korra used to be (particularly when they were romantically involved) draws a clear parallel that Korra and Asami's feelings for each other are developing into something more, while the way they ended that fight also shows that they are much more mature now, and I have to point out that when they all hug, Korra rests her head on Asami's shoulder, not Mako's.

For Korra, Mako, and Asami in this episode, I really like how rather than trying to avoid their issues of being apart for 3 years *they actually dealt with their problems head on and got them over and done with, it really shows how far their friendship has come since the first season.*
I've always loved korra so much as a character but man... season 4 korra is such an inspiration, I can't imagine the strength she had to pull herself out of her recovery

Hey Kenny and Montana, I should tell you guys about the next episode. You see back in 2014, Nickelodeon had cut the budget for season 4 by the amount of one episode. So the creators had two choices: either cut some of staff members or clip show. Of course they decided to do a clip show like episodes cuz if they didn't, a lot of people would've been fired. And you know they got bills to pay like us. Overall it was like 5 minutes of new animation while other 16 minutes is old stuff. This is consider by fans another filler like episodes in the series like Ember Island Players from TLA. So if you guys want to skip it, it's all fine with me. If not, that's fine too I will still watch it
I think it's up to them, since both choices are reasonable. By skipping it, all of us will get to watch some action, but by watching it, we would have to wait for another one week for the new episode. But I will still watch it anyhow.
I think Prince Wu's reactions in this episode are very telling of his character: he has to be rescued because Mako snapped at him and refused to do his job and instead of getting mad he offers Mako a raise for saving him. Then he gets taken to live with peasants and he's nothing but respectful and grateful.

18:30 I'm pretty sure Korra can do it all over the city because the vines have started to spread through the entire city, especially underground. Toph said she can see everything going on, so I'd imagine the vines are pretty much everywhere.
A Note About Episode 8 I don't know if people in your Patreon had already told you about this, but a lot of things went down that made Episode 8 the way it is. It was orginally supposed to be the episode where we know more about Kuvira's backstory but Nick did the creators of Korra dirty by slashing their budget and they ended up having to "cheapen" one episode to only five minutes of new animation. Unfortunately, that episode was Kuvira's backstory episode (which is what Episode 8 is supposed to be) as the other episodes already drive the plot forward and would do some damage to this season if cut off. Love love love all the reunions 🤍 My fav reunions have to be with Korra and Tenzin, Bumi too~ It's like Korra was coming home, it makes me tear up everytime when Bumi lifts her up and hugs her 😁 Korra and Asami reuniting was a beautiful moment as well~
Remember Toph saying that the roots of the Banyon Grove tree spread out around the world and it's how she saw her family from the Swamp? In Republic City, that's what Korra was using to find Wu's energy- the roots. First the trunk of it above ground then the literal roots below ground in the station.
Korra spiritbending the ground she could do it because theres psirit vines rooted all over republic city although it wasnt as strong and she couldnt know 100% for sure as she said after getting on the train cause she wasnt in direct contact with a vine

I sooo prefer Korras outfit in the later episode of book 4 and it was in a few episodes in book 2, but the darker blue and the longer are band thinks just look better
I had the same reaction when Cora just touched the ground at the train station because I'm like where is the spirit vine but then I remembered that Republic city was basically rebuilt and assami made sure that stuff intertwined and overlaped with the Spirit Vines so they weren't damaged so there now not only part of the city they've helped fortify its structure

Seeing Kuvira and her army begin harvesting vines from the Banyan Grove tree always puts a pit in my stomach. There was something sublime about how that swamp was established in AtLA, and it left me with this reverence for what that fictional part of the world represents. Watching it being attacked makes me feel physically ill, like I'm watching a murder transpire right in front of me and I can't do anything about it. I love the writing in this show.

What you said stuck with me a bit, Montana. I've always wanted to seek a career in psychology! I'm naturally good at helping people work through their day to day problems, like a friend, and i know that it may not mean anything, but it's something i enjoy doing. But something steered me away from it, i'm not mentally ok myself. I've struggled with depression for a good chunk of my life now and in my head i associated me, as not a healthy person, could not in any way seek this career path. Like how some physical injuries limit an athlete, for example. One, the Earth Empire doesn't have robots, those are soldiers inside mech suits. Two, if you want to understand the Bolin/Varrick interaction, they're an homage to the Bing Crosby/Bob Hope "Road" movies from the 40's, like "Road to Morocco", "Road to Zanzibar" etc. They were the original "buddy movies" that everyone followed later.
i absolutely loved your reactions to that korrasami moment because not every reactor sees it, and did you guys notice her car is changed to match the color of korra’s outfit? i never noticed this detail until after i watched it for the first time.
The Spirit Vine thing through the concrete isn't lucky because if you remember, Toph said that the vines run deep within the earth all over Republic City and the rest of the world. All she would need to do, is feel the energy of the vines and connect with them through the concrete. So it's a bit of earth bending, mixed with some spiritual energy sensing, but it's doable.
Also, I don't think the vines are necessary to do that trick. They just make it easier to learn. Like meteoric metal being the easiest way to learn metal bending, but not being the only metal that can be bent. And in any case, that sort of spirit sense isn't exclusively an earthbending thing. The old guardian of the tree could do it and he was a waterbender.
I only just noticed that Asami complimenting Korra's hair was identical to Katara's 'I love your hair' when Aang woke up from his coma after Azula blasted him, I don't know how to deal with that TT____TT

18:30 I'm pretty sure Korra can do it all over the city because the vines have started to spread through the entire city, especially underground. Toph said she can see everything going on, so I'd imagine the vines are pretty much everywhere.

A Note About Episode 8
I don't know if people in your Patreon had already told you about this, but a lot of things went down that made Episode 8 the way it is.
It was orginally supposed to be the episode where we know more about Kuvira's backstory but Nick did the creators of Korra dirty by slashing their budget and they ended up having to "cheapen" one episode to only five minutes of new animation.
Unfortunately, that episode was Kuvira's backstory episode (which is what Episode 8 is supposed to be) as the other episodes already drive the plot forward and would do some damage to this season if cut off.
Bryan Konietzko made a Tumblr post detailing this just two hours before the episode was going to aired back in 2014:

Remember Toph saying that the roots of the Banyon Grove tree spread out around the world and it's how she saw her family from the Swamp? In Republic City, that's what Korra was using to find Wu's energy- the roots. First the trunk of it above ground then the literal roots below ground in the station.

i love that you can just see the development of korra and asami’s relationship leading to something even if it’s very subtle (because of nickelodeon giving the creators a hard time) you can tell something is going on.

I sooo prefer Korras outfit in the later episode of book 4 and it was in a few episodes in book 2, but the darker blue and the longer are band thinks just look better

I had the same reaction when Cora just touched the ground at the train station because I'm like where is the spirit vine but then I remembered that Republic city was basically rebuilt and assami made sure that stuff intertwined and overlaped with the Spirit Vines so they weren't damaged so there now not only part of the city they've helped fortify its structure

Seeing Kuvira and her army begin harvesting vines from the Banyan Grove tree always puts a pit in my stomach. There was something sublime about how that swamp was established in AtLA, and it left me with this reverence for what that fictional part of the world represents. Watching it being attacked makes me feel physically ill, like I'm watching a murder transpire right in front of me and I can't do anything about it. I love the writing in this show.
Well, it makes sense from the perspective of Kuvira and her Empire. They wholeheartedly believe that their goals are what's best for their people, and so the ends justify the means. The objective is more important than anything they might have to do to achieve it.
@@TheGreater-ScopeVillain I'm pretty sure the industries that pollute our atmosphere and raze massive swaths of forestry are pretty secure in the knowledge that what they do is for "the greater good" as well, but that doesn't stop the looming threat of climate change from threatening human extinction. I do Like Kuvira as a villain though; the sickening feeling I get from watching her do her thing is proof of the quality of her antagonism.

What you said stuck with me a bit, Montana. I've always wanted to seek a career in psychology! I'm naturally good at helping people work through their day to day problems, like a friend, and i know that it may not mean anything, but it's something i enjoy doing. But something steered me away from it, i'm not mentally ok myself. I've struggled with depression for a good chunk of my life now and in my head i associated me, as not a healthy person, could not in any way seek this career path. Like how some physical injuries limit an athlete, for example. I've always thought it to be a conflicting thing and only recently i've been thinking about doing it anyway - ultimately, if not for practice, as a way to better understand myself and my struggles.
I'd like to also add that you two are wonderful and very smart individuals with your predictions and attention to detail! I found your channel because of Avatar and Korra, but i'll continue to support you guys for future shows too ✨

One, the Earth Empire doesn't have robots, those are soldiers inside mech suits. Two, if you want to understand the Bolin/Varrick interaction, they're an homage to the Bing Crosby/Bob Hope "Road" movies from the 40's, like "Road to Morocco", "Road to Zanzibar" etc. They were the original "buddy movies" that everyone followed later.

The Spirit Vine thing through the concrete isn't lucky because if you remember, Toph said that the vines run deep within the earth all over Republic City and the rest of the world. All she would need to do, is feel the energy of the vines and connect with them through the concrete. So it's a bit of earth bending, mixed with some spiritual energy sensing, but it's doable.
Also, I don't think the vines are necessary to do that trick. They just make it easier to learn. Like meteoric metal being the easiest way to learn metal bending, but not being the only metal that can be bent. And in any case, that sort of spirit sense isn't exclusively an earthbending thing. The old guardian of the tree could do it and he was a waterbender.
I only just noticed that Asami complimenting Korra's hair was identical to Katara's 'I love your hair' when Aang woke up from his coma after Azula blasted him, I don't know how to deal with that TT____TT

I bet before the spirit portals were opened you had to do the sight thing through vines and roots and stuff like that, but since the whole world is more spiritual now (combined with the fact that she’s literally part spirit) she can do it anywhere
