  • In this video I will be testing the autofocus of the Panasonic GH5 with the new 2.7 firmware update. While this firmware wasn't intended for autofocus improvements, I got asked on what my thoughts are with the 2.7 firmware update for the Panasonic GH5. I will be comparing the GH5 vs the Sony a6400 to show how the autofocus is on the GH5 now. I hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching!

      I'm currently shooting with the G85. I think the GH5 has better overall looking and for the content I'm making, the autofocus speed doesn't really matter. If the GH6 will be released with better autofocus for a reasonable price, I might consider buying that or maybe a cheaper second-hand GH5. I've already invested in a few M43 lenses (Leica 8-18mm, Leica 12-60mm, Lumix 25mm f/1.7) so a full system change would not be cheap. :)

      I have the Lumix S5, and for talking head stuff, I'm actually quite surprised at the new firmware update. Compared against my A7iii, the image quality, sharpness, and overall "feel" of the image straight out of the camera seem way better on the S5, and after a few tweaks to the AF (I use Speed 0, Sens -3) I'm able to use it comfortably with no issues.

    The autofocus of the GH5 seems to be sufficiently good (with the tested firmware) if you know what you are doing as a filmmaker. What I like with the GH5 is the plethora of video features. And let us not forget the cheaper and smaller lenses. I also like the open gate feature. Therefore a perfect beginner video camera in 2023 if your budget is below $1000.

I still don't trust it fully either and still do manual focus on important stuff but I'm glad Panasonic is making the best out of contrast detection and it does work for some quick run and gun stuff. @JakeMcHugh  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for the input and kind words! I think the most important tip I could give to anyone is trying to post as consistent as possible. If this means taking a week or two off of uploading to have a back stock of videos then go for it. This allows you to be able to work ahead at a more relaxed pace. Second I recommend trying to make content around a topic that is highly searched. I know everyone says this, but I feel like this is one of the biggest reasons that I was able to grow my channel a little. Some tools to use for this is Tubebuddy or VidIQ and searching topic ideas and seeing the score they spit out for you based on how much it’s searched. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    Hi Jake, Thanks a lot for this video and thanks too for doing it as I asked you to!
    I agree with you. Gh5’s autofocus is not as good as Sony’s and most probably, despite of any future upgrade, never will. However, no one can disagree that the improvement is utterly outstanding! Also, I am very surprised, on top of really happy as a GH5 user, that Panasonic is still working with its upgrades! I hope they keep going it!!
    The autofocus has remarkably improved, YES, The Sony autofocus is better and probably always will be, compared with the GH5, YES... but that the value for money of the gh5 is unbeatable , (I bought mine pristine condition with Leica 12-60mm for 1.3k) is TOTALLY out of e question! And for me, it is good enough... (hopefully more upgrades will arrive and will keep helping a bit)

    Great vjdeo... I have both cameras as well as an a6600. The focus on the sony is without a doubt delicious... don't get it twisted. The gh5 is not as easy for self shooting but its a beast with an atomos for 4k... not your point though. 6400 wins all day... as all sony will when it comes to auto focus. TH-cam content creating is all about the auto focus. Filmmaking used to be all about the manual focus... that sadly may be a "back in my day" thing. If you have a gh5 and want to make a film.. keep it. If you want to make videos sell it and buy a 64/6600 for the money its fair. A7s3 is the target. You can get the best of all worlds. Video "Film" making and TH-cam stuff.

    • @dericsanchez4081
      @dericsanchez4081 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Jake McHugh yeah I am curious about the upcoming A7iv but I feel like that is going to be more expensive at around the $2499 mark to compete with the Canon R6. And to be honest, I didn’t really notice the pulsing lamp until you pointed it out. I was more focused on the subject rather than looking around at the background. I think a lot of people specifically look for pulsing when they know the video was shot on a Panasonic. Unless the main subject is pulsing in and out of focus, I don’t find it to be that big of a deal, personally.

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It still has potential, but I do agree it's on the verge of death. Right now, the only way to save it is have extremely ground-breaking specs.
      It must have at least 10 bit 444 internally, or 12 bit 420 internally for the GH6, or it's not going to make a large enough splash. Sony brought out the big guns to crush Canon, and I assume the A7iv is already completed. They're just waiting for a real competitor to appear before tweaking it to crush them.
      The S5 was almost good. But the tiny micro HDMI? That's a deal-breaker. For a camera marketed with external raw coming, and on a micro HDMI, it's sad.
      If it was a full size HDMI I would agree, the GH5 would look worthless against the S5.

  • @JimAtHome
    @JimAtHome 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah the autofocus is faster and more accurate on the Sony but I found my gh5 to be a lot better at autofocus since the 2.6 update I haven't tried the 2.7 yet, plus it has a lot of other possibilities that the Sony doesn't have, I have mine mounted in a smallrig cage with top handle and a Atomos ninja V, the Ninja helps me a lot when focusing with autofocus or manually pulling focus as I don't have 20/20 vision and that larger screen really helps me a lot plus the 1000 nits brightness when outdoors on a sunny day is amazing, with autofocus it's great for slow moving stuff but if there's any kind of faster action manual is the only way to go

      I get what you are saying, but like I stated in the video the widest lens I had that wasn’t adapted had an aperture of f2.8 and along with that I stated that the Sony would technically be at a disadvantage being at F1.4, but given how great the autofocus is with the Sony it still beat the GH5 while having a shallower depth of field. The GH5 v2.6 does not pulse hardly at all with the mft version of the sigma 16mm and beats any Panasonic lens i have used in auto and face tracking wise . very smooth , so really this test is a bit unfair lol , but saying that the Sony would still beat the gh5 on most of either native lenses Sony or Pany , i use -1 speed and 0 sensitivity mostly with 16mm on gh5 , and on a side note although the G9 is a bit better on most pany lenses the gh5 2.6 beats it for less pulsing by far especially the 2.5 14mm Pany and the 16mm Sigma as the gh5 can be adjusted , the g9 does not have speed or sensitivity settings , but the g9 is slightly better for Auto focus photos than GH5 , cheers for your videos
    PS i don,t use quick auto focus as its not for video but photos , i was told . and i have never found it makes any difference in video in many testing i have done , cheers , and the gh5 is working easily smooth enough now at ver 2.6 that i would never trade it with its smooth ibis just to get a slight better auto focus , the GH5 also has so many areas that its good at , its even fine as a vloging camera with the light Olympus 12mm f2 or the 14mm 2.5 or the 8/18 2.8 arm stamina allowing lol , cheers again .

      That is interesting, I used the sigma 16mm f1.4 at one point on my GH5 and I found it to struggle quite a bit, but this could be because of my settings possibly. I do love that 14mm f2.5 pancake lens and find that as an amazing value for the money. Thanks for watching!

      Glad I could help! Thats a tough decision I feel. I think it depends on your style of shooting or what you want in a camera. I don't know a whole lot about the Canon, but I would say that the autofocus would be much better along with the audio since it comes with two XLR inputs. The Canon comes basically rigged out while the GH5 is more compact and would be more inconspicuous. The GH5 could also be rigged out if you'd like which gives you the best of both worlds in that regard. From what I can tell the GH5 would have better image quality and the ability to swap lenses is nice. I hope this helps you out a little bit and thanks for watching!

    It's getting good, but not quite there yet. I feel like there's only a few ways DFD is going to compete with Hybrid AF or PDAF is for the camera to emulate the final 2 pulses in software without moving the lens elements.
    - The sensors/processing needs to be powerful enough to identify distance down to the last millimetre, so lens elements can be moved precisely.
    - The last 2 checks would be based on how each lens profile defocuses or focuses at various focal lengths. So they kinda have to map out how every lens creates a "gaussian blur" effect from focusing. And apply that virtually in camera without the viewer knowing, in order to check for the final 2 pulses.
    - TLDR Basically instead of checking physically, check against a gaussian blur table that can be cross-referenced internally via computational photography.
    Another way could be to brute force things, stuff the GH6 with 3 or maybe even 4 processors. 2 processors entirely dedicated to DFD calculations. I heard it operates somewhere around 480Hz right now, so if they ran the algorithim at maybe 1Khz, or 1.5Khz, and instead of having 2 pulses to check focus, make it like 10 or 20 steps front and back. That will smooth out the final adjustments instead of a 3 step jerking motion. Regardless it's still waay too inefficient, and it's about time Panny engineers stop being stubborn and just learn how to make PDAF.
    Or kidnap a few engineers from Olympus.

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Vlogging with it, I complete get away with the AF, but, inside with lights in the BG or items in frame, the pulsing is really apparent. Maybe that's what throws it off the most, light will be a point of contrast and its constantly checking to see if that's something to focus on and pulsing!

    There's a feature on the GH5 which most people havent realised concerning the autofocus. In as much as it sucks sometimes, there's built into it an intelligent algorithm that memorizes subjects that are in autofocus. After it autofocuses on a particular subject for a while, it memorizes it and speeds up the process of focusing on it when it appears again. Its a slow process but if Panasonic should get it right, it will be a useful feature which could end up working faster than phase detection.

      Could be the case, but usually I find cameras struggle more at faster F stops. Especially with the GH5. Once you get around f3.2-3.5 it’s a lot better. Thanks for watching!

      While logic is sound in simple terms
      Its really not , the larger dof offered by the f2.8 ( 5,6 ff equiv ) is a lot easier to manage than the f1.4 ( 2.2 ff equiv )
      Because while it might "track" better , racking the focus in with the depth is the issue - "tracking" is never hard , its adjusting it in depth thats always hard
      "Tracking" like any machine vision just compares the neighbouring pixels and at points the bokeh may even reduce the contrast afforded in the background , such as mushing in 2 different tree branch into a single bokehfied entity
      In this case it is afforded a larger depth of field , way larger yet still loses to the razor sharp dof one

      It would be a little tough now that all of my cameras are up to date, but I could help walk you through it.
      First, you will want a clean (formatted) SD card and a full camera battery. You will need to go to this link here on your computer and download the zip file to your SD card.
      www.panasonic.com/global/consumer/lumix/gh5_firmware.html
      After you have the file on the SD card you can then insert the card into your camera and turn it on. Once the camera is on you will then hit the playback button like you were going to review your photos or video. It will then ask you “Start version up” and you just have to click yes!
      It’s one of those things that the first time you do it seems tough, but after doing so you will get the hang of it in no time! I hope this helps you out and thanks for watching!

      Nice! The 2.6 firmware update was really the turning point for the autofocus on this camera! Granted I don't think many GH5 users are the type to rely on autofocus for their work. Thanks for watching!

  • @sdhute

    Panasonic has the video tools others cameras don't have. However Panasonic expects you to always be behind the camera. Not in front. I've heard the faster the fps the better the autofocus ?

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. I think that most of Panasonic's market is more "filmmakers," but with the new S5 and the G100 they made those cameras for more content creators so I think they see the value in that marketshare and will continue to work on their autofocus at some point. Thanks for watching!

      @@JakeMcHugh I've seen that gx85 bit recently there appears to be a surge of new videos on it. At 497 with 2 Lens kit. Possibly the best deal around. I'm going to use it as bcam and also for photography. I'm totally impressed with built quality. Also impress it came with latest firmware from 2019. Also eligible for 3 year warranty extension. It's still a valid production model. Also no record limit.

    honestly nobody is still waiting for GH5 AF fix. It is not going to work. Either wait to see if GH6 will get a PDAF or switch to SONY FUJI CANON. GH5 is not going to be reliable because it doesn't have the technology.

    BTW, shooting at 24 fps for online content is epicaly stupid. 60hz is the most common screen and 24 does not divide evently into 60. you can use the SAME shutter speed at 30 fps (1/24 s)
