PS2 has this file "seabed" wich controls the render distance wich was very low in the ps2 version (longer in the og PC version). What i find funny is, on pc you see people cut all the "classic lighting" for a cleaner look which is what the remasters did yet people bitched about it lol.
Truth is,we 90s people are over obseeseed with classic lighting of gta trilogy so the new lighting looks bad. But for the new generation who have played gta 5 and rdr2 the clssic lightning for them is kinda unreal and fake environment creater. They are finding the new lighting more realistic. After new update rockstar returned our nostalgia besides keeping the option to turn it on off. Me particularly, i found the new lighting a good new feature, it not only make the game look realistic but also gave the trilogy specially san andreas look like a modern game.❤️❤️
This GTA Trilogy seems like it's finally ready to be purchased. I remember I was planning on getting it at launch, but when I seen how many bugs it had, I chose to hold off on it. The classic lighting definitely makes a huge difference. The game now looks good and gives me that warm nostalgia I felt back when originally playing San Andreas on PS2.

This has given me a push to finally buy these games - never played the trilogy before and was worried that the remaster wouldn't be faithful enough to the original.
Great comparison Captain! The change in lighting and the reduction of the draw distance was a much needed change to these editions. This shows that bigger is not always better, it also shows that artstyle is way more important than realism in videogames. I would take that unrelealistic purple sky any day rather than a pure blue sky with some white blobs scattered around, I could do that IRL thank you very much :|
I was in the middle of playing through the remaster for the first time when this dropped. When I saw those OG sand storm effects it made me so happy lol. And those weird ass birds that remind me of a pterodactyl, I love they brought those back.
I honestly like the farther draw distance, I like being able to see a good part of the city, not just a block in front of me. The lack of effects before the patch just made it look ugly and bland. The newer effects look better while maintaining a farther draw distance.
Was gonna cop the OG Xbox versions but was kinda distraught at how that version of San Andreas lacks the cyan and orange color pallete. So seeing this update I think I'll finally cop The Definitive Edition. Only downside is the missing songs but luckily I only care about Billie Jean and Runnin Down a Dream. Are you an artist? I love how you describe the scenes.
The only other main gripe for me still is the character models look infinitely worse than the original in all cases, let’s hope there not done making changes and updates
oh cool they fixed the GTA remakes that released earlier this yea- 'It's been a hair over 3 years since the Grand Theft Auto trilogy the definitive edition launched' WHAT
@@Lordicus21 Why? The map is very small, the fog helps hide the fact that you can see the major cities from many parts where you really shouldn't. Good LOD or not.
this really goes to show the power of emulation, emulation pretty much remasters classic games as is, retaining almost all of what made classic games gorgeous for the time while adding the resolution our eyes need these days, emulation is awesome. Glad to see they have given the definitive edition some love though, it needed it and now i might buy it.
Idk how people like the PS2 lighting everything looks so orange it hurts my eyes that’s why I say people are driven by nostalgia, maybe because I didn’t play the PS2 version I don’t consider it good. I like that they gave u an option to choose between the lighting and I am sticking with the lighting from the DE, I can always switch it to the classic if I want
I was born after gta sa was released and i have never played the ps2 version and i can say that it looks way better than the pc and xbox versions which didnt have orange lighting and the classic lighting is so awesome cuz now i can experince what i have never gotten to experince before it really was bland and soulless
I still think the lighting could be better with less of the UE4 look and more of a stylized yet more modern lighting look than it has but this is a massive improvement
Maybe it's just me that works in actual film production but the new sunset in looks overexposed and almost leaving a "hotspot" on screen. The old is very subtle and still impactful - real cinematography.
I still think the originals look a little better. The new super detailed textures don’t work that well with the simplistic yet exaggerated 3D models and animations of the game. I would still consider the post-patch version of the def edition to be completely enjoyable though.
It would be such a small change but making the game ground a little darker in the rural areas and San Fierro would pretty much make the new lighting perfect This is the only thing that is bothering me, how “bright” the game looks when the original was very dark (sometimes to the point where the characters were just a silhouette lol) Great patch nevertheless, they pretty much nailed the atmosphere of those “welcome to the 80’s” gta videos that people offered compared to the remasters
You can get the PS2 Graphics back to 2005 PC Port with mods like SkyGFX and files from PS2, it look very good and can take advantage of mods to make it look even better nowdays.
I think this proves how important lighting is in cinematic videogames. It completely changes the vibe one has playing them. Batman Arkham Knight is a great example of this, it has such great lighting, it STILL looks like a modern AAA game that could've launched this year...and still would look better than almost everything!
It looks better - there's no denying that, especially with the implementation of the classic lighting fix - but there are still a lot of issues that need fixing. I haven't been out and bought the trilogy even though I really want to because I'd like to think there will be additional patches incoming, but I'm not convinced R* will be doing much more if anything with the games 🤷🏻♂️
I think this happened because Rockstar finally had the resources to dedicate to fixing this thing. They were all hands on deck for GTA 6, but not that it's largely in Q/A and Bug Testing, I am so grateful they managed to get some people to fix GSG's mess. Going forward, I can imagine they're going to keep making small fixes/tweaks to these games. Any future ports are probably just going to be handled by Double Eleven, and they would be just that, ports.
Drawn distance is worse in the PS2 for buildings yet better for cars...crazy how in the trilogy you still can't see cars from too far in a new gen console, in fact it's worse.
Im still amazed how modern hardware needs LODs for a 2004 game. If anything they should be able to instantly load the entire San Andreas map at once with maximum LOD.
I do regret playing the DE triology last year to completion as i don't fancy going through them again so soon, i had good time with them, they were (mostly) bug free when i played, but i wish i could have driven around a more grimey liberty city in my play through. Tried driving around on my completed save but keep getting shot at by the gang members ive antagonised 😂
I think they actually did a very reasonable job balancing the draw distance & the fog. I think being able to see the top of Mt chilliad isn't a bad thing either. Having some landmarks just barely there in the fog makes it look more "filled". Too bad the actual LOD's are still far below the original games "not great" LOD's. 😅
Finally. I have been (admittedly) complaining about the lack of fog/haze, and the immersion killing draw distance issues since day one of the definitive edition. Thank god they finally fixed it. I will say, however, that the draw distance should be obscured a little more; or at least available as an option. (classic draw distance, or something)
Maybe this is just me but as someone who played the originals ever since I was 6 back in the day I actually enjoy the definitive version more now than the originals don’t get me wrong the originals will always be so nostalgic for me but I prefer these newer versions I’ll still play both depending on the mood
Bro you shouldn't use hardware mode on PCSX2 when doing comparisons, always prefer software mode which is guaranteed to be accurate when the hardware renderers (even OpenGL/Vulkan) still have mistakes. Like 3:18 looks much too dark than it's supposed to be on a real console.
This is not PCSX2. This is the emulator made by Sony for the PS5. I have no control. Also from footage I’ve seen from a real console it looks just as dark.
Looks good... A classic/remastered option for the physics would be nice (better car physics/euphoria ragdoll). If R* really wanted to outdo themselves they could pass the city maps through their asset teams and clean up the PS2 era geometry. Other than that... NPC and vehicle draw distance could probably be improved and there's some kind of spectral map from the sun thats still present in shadows that irks me. :p
I feel crazy for saying this but I really want to play this game now. I first played the OG SA on the PC version so I never had every lighting effect but this is how I remember the game looking as a kid.
The emulation is the wrong comparison because it already had obvious issues. Above all, you can see that everything has this strange doubling effect, as if there’s another ghostly layer behind it. I don’t have this issue on the PS2!
@@CaptainGlack true and thx fornthat, I just was about to say that it is not exactly the same experience like on PS2, some younger people may not know :)

@@cristhian900 it will never be a true remaster cause its on ue5 and not rockstars engine
I dont think renderware code would work on rage.@@SoSikWitIt
Yeah I just got them for ps4 and playing sa for the first time, I’m gonna pretend that this is the unofficial launch version and that any new updates from the new dev team are updating from the launch.
Same. I was one of those people ready to buy it on release but saw how much of a laughing stock it was and saved my money. I still dont think its worth $60 but im definitely getting it on sale.
It was alr ready over a year ago i bought it and had 0 bugs when i first bought it i did have occasional bugs but they have all been fixed for more than a year now
Please make one for at least Vice City, nobody else is making these as in-depth.
Yup, why only San Andreas?
Game is STILL BROKEN!!! Ambulances do not SPAWN to rescue peds on SA and VC im sick of mentioning this on every channel , not ONe, 1 TH-camr has mentioned this issue and I’ve watched loads of videos on this update.
The game is still broken , glitches galore that I’ve captured lol fk this game I’ve had it
Just bc an ambulance don't spawn to rescue someone doesn't mean the game is broken. Who cares about that
@@jonisalia15Thats a pretty big deal. How do you expect to be immersed in the world if real world things don’t happen in the game? Let alone the mental doubt of if this thing is broken what else am I missing out on?
@ The games are broken it bugs the crap outta me it’s so fkn amateur not to fix this glaring gameplay issue. Fk it I play the OG unfucked verisons
Maybe it don’t bother you playing broken shite but it bothers me
Didn’t have that problem so idk
This has given me a push to finally buy these games - never played the trilogy before and was worried that the remaster wouldn't be faithful enough to the original.
The fact that they shipped the way it was is the most amazing part TBH.
Great comparison Captain!
The change in lighting and the reduction of the draw distance was a much needed change to these editions. This shows that bigger is not always better, it also shows that artstyle is way more important than realism in videogames. I would take that unrelealistic purple sky any day rather than a pure blue sky with some white blobs scattered around, I could do that IRL thank you very much :|
If only we could get the missing music back though
I was in the middle of playing through the remaster for the first time when this dropped. When I saw those OG sand storm effects it made me so happy lol. And those weird ass birds that remind me of a pterodactyl, I love they brought those back.
I honestly like the farther draw distance, I like being able to see a good part of the city, not just a block in front of me.
The lack of effects before the patch just made it look ugly and bland. The newer effects look better while maintaining a farther draw distance.
yeah I can see that but it breaks immersion for me at the edge of the city being able to see stuff that should be so far
Yeah, it breaks the illusion of scale
Classic lightning really makes it look more like the original game
8:31 the comparison should be made at the same time bro.
Such a high quality video man!
How tf did I ever play this game on day 1 release!
Now a video for the classic lightning in Vice City and 3 😊
Vice City video should be out tomorrow!
@DanRan98 Oh true
oh cool they fixed the GTA remakes that released earlier this yea-
'It's been a hair over 3 years since the Grand Theft Auto trilogy the definitive edition launched'
WHAT
Excellent video. There's still a lot to be made, like the LOD and black holes through the map
This is the comparison video I’ve been waiting for!
Vice City tomorrow!
Would be nice to see a similar video for GTA III and Vice City
Just uploaded the Vice City video! Go check it out :)
@@CaptainGlack I see you are saving the best for last then 😏
They really should reduce the draw distance even further.
nah, just make some better LOD
maybe 10%. They should fix colors instead, they are only 80% right.
@@Lordicus21 Why? The map is very small, the fog helps hide the fact that you can see the major cities from many parts where you really shouldn't. Good LOD or not.
Great comparison video, well done.
this really goes to show the power of emulation, emulation pretty much remasters classic games as is, retaining almost all of what made classic games gorgeous for the time while adding the resolution our eyes need these days, emulation is awesome. Glad to see they have given the definitive edition some love though, it needed it and now i might buy it.
Great video, man! I’m replaying the GTA’s on the PS2 at the moment so I can’t wait for the other ones.
Ty sir I've been searching for this video and i never find one until now
I still think the lighting could be better with less of the UE4 look and more of a stylized yet more modern lighting look than it has but this is a massive improvement
Brings back memories. Also kinda reminds me of Halloween weather on gta 5
Maybe it's just me that works in actual film production but the new sunset in looks overexposed and almost leaving a "hotspot" on screen. The old is very subtle and still impactful - real cinematography.
Dude if it released like this, it would had been amazing.
Glad to see it in its current state.
Great video deserves a sub already but the Tenacious D reference at the end just made it even better!
I’m SO GLAD someone noticed that! You get the gold star ⭐
@CaptainGlack Haha thanks! I'm a huge San Andreas and Tenacious D fan, how could I not notice hahaha.
I'll be looking forward for your vids!
I still think the originals look a little better. The new super detailed textures don’t work that well with the simplistic yet exaggerated 3D models and animations of the game. I would still consider the post-patch version of the def edition to be completely enjoyable though.
2004 game still beating most games and even it's own remastered version lol
It would be such a small change but making the game ground a little darker in the rural areas and San Fierro would pretty much make the new lighting perfect
This is the only thing that is bothering me, how “bright” the game looks when the original was very dark (sometimes to the point where the characters were just a silhouette lol)
Great patch nevertheless, they pretty much nailed the atmosphere of those “welcome to the 80’s” gta videos that people offered compared to the remasters
Lackluster, doesn't look tastefully done, but I'm glad they at least tried to fix it. OG PC release modded gives better results
Thanks for the comparison, this is the type of video I was looking for.
honestly, it might be time for another playthrough of VC and SA after all these fixes and how much better they look now
They need to fix camera and flight controls now. Still lots to fix before I’d consider purchasing
I never expected them to fix the mess they released, but my god they proved me wrong. I can't wait to replay all 3 games now
After all of this I think I'll still play the OG version on San Andreas.
Batman Arkham Knight is a great example of this, it has such great lighting, it STILL looks like a modern AAA game that could've launched this year...and still would look better than almost everything!
o hope they also fixed Vice City's lighting.. the feel of that game doesn't work without the classic Miami Vice aesthetic
I think EA spoiled us with such a great Mass Effect remaster because this feels like the bare minimum for a remaster 😭 maybe I’m in the minority.
Very good video. GTA V ambience music complements it very well
Drawn distance is worse in the PS2 for buildings yet better for cars...crazy how in the trilogy you still can't see cars from too far in a new gen console, in fact it's worse.
Im still amazed how modern hardware needs LODs for a 2004 game. If anything they should be able to instantly load the entire San Andreas map at once with maximum LOD.
such an awesome comparison video
CJ's back of the tanktop feel so mutch weirder now.😓
Finally. I have been (admittedly) complaining about the lack of fog/haze, and the immersion killing draw distance issues since day one of the definitive edition. Thank god they finally fixed it. I will say, however, that the draw distance should be obscured a little more; or at least available as an option. (classic draw distance, or something)
Bravo, but I work really hard for my money and Rockstar don't deserve it anymore.
That GTA V pause menu theme is so nostalgic to me.
Maybe this is just me but as someone who played the originals ever since I was 6 back in the day I actually enjoy the definitive version more now than the originals don’t get me wrong the originals will always be so nostalgic for me but I prefer these newer versions I’ll still play both depending on the mood
nothing replaces the PS2 versions and i think the new update is great, but still, nothing replaces the PS2 versions (especially GTA: San Andreas)
Rockstar didn't fix the trilogy.
Video Games Deluxe did, team that made LA Noire VR.
They also ruined sounds on weapons like uzi and minigun.
@CaptainGlack I see. It doesn't look like that on mine but if you have no control then I didn't need to be on your neck like this, sorry.
lovely video, made me want to actually buy this game. subscribed.
the exact video I've been waiting for
Looks good...
I do like how the city skylines look with the changed lighting.
The emulation is the wrong comparison because it already had obvious issues. Above all, you can see that everything has this strange doubling effect, as if there’s another ghostly layer behind it. I don’t have this issue on the PS2!
Without the means to record a PS2 this was the best I could get! But it’s close enough to see the basic colours and weather.
@@CaptainGlack true and thx fornthat, I just was about to say that it is not exactly the same experience like on PS2, some younger people may not know :)
