I agree, I stumbled upon this exact idea when I saw a kicker in football miss a field goal, but then got a second chance because of a penalty, and of course made the kick on his second attempt. I concluded that if you could visualize yourself failing before going out to perform, it would likely reduce a lot of the pressure because having experienced failure once, if only in your mind, the fear of failing a second time, so to speak, would not be so great. When you embrace what you fear most, if only mentally, the fears begin to evaporate and then it becomes much easier to relax and concentrate on your performance without being distracted by the possibility of failing.

Right? It’s like when you’re afraid to do something simply because you’ve never done it and don’t know what it’s like. You don’t die when you fail. Having experience with it makes it easier to stay calm the second time

@@DanBlewett By the way, I also have a huge fascination with philosophy and baseball, both playing and thinking about it (and psychology among other things). I look forward to viewing your other videos.

@@Bill-uo6cm Thats awesome - my degree was a double major in Philosophy and Psychology, so it sounds like we're a lot alike there. Check out the two free chapters of my book as well - my memoir (Dear Baseball Gods) is very philosophical. I bet it would resonate with you.

@@DanBlewett One more thing, I played baseball in high school and college, took a few decades off, and now at 56, I have been playing BASEBALL on Long Island in New York with guys in their 20s and 30s for the last 7 or 8 years. And 5 years ago, I told myself I was going to learn how to pitch, and I expected it to take around 5 years, and now after around 5 years, I am a pretty good pitcher, but I work hard, take it seriously, and probably read about pitching almost every day. I still catch, and play infield, but more and more I am being handed the ball. And when people tell me I am intellectual to a fault, they are not completely wrong. Trusting yourself and just letting things happen (after doing the practicing) usually works, but my instincts are to be a bulldog, and too often I try too hard and, yes, think too much, especially under pressure. Anyway, I am constantly thinking about the kinesiology, psychology and philosophy of baseball and the many parallels that exist between playing baseball and living life. I have no doubt that thinking deeply about the game has made me a better player, and I am getting better at learning how and when NOT to think, but silencing my brain while hitting and pitching is still sometimes a struggle. I'll definitely be following you, and I have to figure out how to buy your book.
