      @@vieltf7758 Whenever you hear a professional musician, whether its Jonas Kaufman at Munich opera or a busker singing folk tunes in the subway, you should expect to pay for that output. Jonas Kaufmann has put his whole life and hundreds of thousands of euros in to being able to sing that well. He is known for both being a really nice guy as well as being dedicated to his art. The hundreds of others professional musicians involved in this project have also committed their lives and considerable expense to playing that music well. Many have been playing since they were little children. You wouldn't expect the product of the labors of the local baker, farmer or craftsmen for free. You certainly wouldn't expect to go in to a Michelin starred restaurant for free. These professional musicians deserve to be compensated for their output too.

    • @davidcrawley9479
      @davidcrawley9479 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @Isabella Buchanan well that's a pretty entitled position to take - that you somehow "deserve" this experience and what's more that you feel like you should get it for free! Look when I was short on cash I enjoyed opera with a standing only ticket or a cheap ticket. I once saw opera in a baseball stadium. All of these options were less expensive than a ticket to a movie theater - yet there are plenty of people who are happy to pay to see a movie, but somehow think opera is only for the rich, or is expensive, or worst of all - that they are somehow entitled to it for free.
      These are professional musicians and we should rightly value their output. If you don't value their output, you probably don't deserve to be listening to it. Notice, that I don't say you need to pay as much as others, nor do I set a price, but value it I do say you should.
      I've not met Jonas, but I do know people who have, they tell me he's one of the nicest guys performing in opera. I really don't doubt that Jonas **is** more generous than I am. I still would never expect him to perform at no charge.

    This video is so great on so many levels. I can close my eyes and listen to this outstanding performance by Jonas Kaufmann and be transported to another realm. But watching it is so much fun. Kaufmann in his jeans and polo is too cute. His excitement at the conclusion is delightful. He nailed it and he was ready to celebrate. I only wish the two VEVO signs would cover all of his delight at the end. The conductor's large arm movements and gum chewing are a hoot. The blonde soprano in the back row chewing gum for all she's worth, as well as the gal in the front row who counts and mouths words make me smile. How the musician in the back row in the blue shirt could doze and look so bored is beyond me. But my very favorite is the balding French horn player in the red shirt who is seen mouthing the words with Kaufmann as if he were performing the aria as well, is positively delightful.

    • @celibidache1000
      @celibidache1000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The "gliding" you refer to is called portamento, and is partly used as an ornament, but it's first and foremost a fundamental technical aspect in Italian opera, that keeps the air flowing as not to be cut off between notes; in addition it's relieves harmful tensions and is incidently the only way to create legato in singing.
      So calling it cheating is an interesting choice, since by "not cheating", according to you, Kaufmann attacks the B4 so recklessly that he doesn't quite reach it, but is slightly low, and his voice almost gives up in the middle of it.

    • @alvinlepik5265
      @alvinlepik5265 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@celibidache1000 If you're gonna make an omelette, you're going to break some eggs. As for portamento, there's a time and a place for it. I think portamento is useful in conveying grief or anguish. Just about anything Wagner, for example. This aria is not about grief. The character is overjoyed.
      Mis-use of portamento as a safety tool is (rightfully) frowned upon.

    • @celibidache1000
      @celibidache1000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@alvinlepik5265 "misuse" of partamento is frowned upon by modern listeners who hear modern opera singers who seems to think that random, excessive, and ugly glissandi is the same thing as portamento. The great singers mastered the portamento, and the audience saw it as an integral part of singing.
      As I wrote, the only way to keep the air flow between two notes, which is the only way to sing legato, is by using portamento. But portamento is an art that is not teached today. A true portamento can be so quick that it's not noticeable, especially when singing small intervals, but also very pronounced either by necessity or interpretative choice. The portamento will also be naturally more pronounced when singing larger leaps.
      So, to for the leap from D4 to B4 in Nessun dorma to be sung legato, and to keep the air flow and the throat open, it MUST be sung with a portamento. Here, Jonas' poor vocal folds closes too tightly and with too much mass, due, in part, to the cut off air flow, forcing him to push abdominally, which in turn causes the vocal folds to close even tighter as not to be blown apart by the excessive sub-glottal pressure, which again makes him have to push even harder - a vocal vicious circle that today is seen as proper singing. And that's why the B4 is flat (I hope you're not trying to argue that the B4 is in tune and released) and needs so much force to be kept sounding.

    • @celibidache1000
      @celibidache1000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@calebgilbert4917 No, the B4 is clearly, and objectively, too low. Perhaps the top of his vibrato reaches the note, but the tone center is way too low. I will trust 20+ years of working with choirs and intonation giving me the ability to tell if a note is on pitch or not. Those claiming the B4 to be in tune either have untrained ears, or belong to that special fan group who desperately WANT it to be on pitch.

    • @calebgilbert4917
      @calebgilbert4917 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@celibidache1000 I'll admit I am not the most knowledgeable of opera techniques. As an instrumentalist, we are always taught that the vibrato goes below the note and back up to it, but not beyond it. I suppose if you're arguing that the center of the vibrato is flat, then I would agree. To my ears it sounds in tune, as the top of his vibrato is what I am listening to. If the goal here is to surround the pitch, then I will admit it is flat by that definition.
