Ferrari's Hidden Advantage

    Ferrari have a MASSIVE advantage this season, and it’s not just that their car is fast.
    They seem pretty untouchable. They’re quick on the straights, and through the slow corners and, over a lap, nobody can touch them.
    They seem to have solved the Porpoising issues, been able to adapt their car for the three (very different) circuits we’ve had so far, and been quick on every tyre they’ve run.
    But on top of that, they have been leveraging a couple of key advantages (and doing it very well).
    Let's get into it.
    🔧 Thanks to Scarbs for joining us once again! Go follow him on Twitter for F1 Tech news!
    / scarbstech
    The first thing to bear in mind is that Ferrari rocked up to the first test with a strong car. A very defined concept that they have been running ever since, they have made very few changes to it. And those little changes have all been for track-specific reasons.
    Whereas if you look at Mercedes, Red Bull (or any of the other teams for that matter), they have been making component upgrades, vast setup changes and different concepts on each of their cars.
    If you look back at Lewis and George’s cars in Jeddah, the cars were set up very differently. (And Lewis made sure we knew it)
    Whereas Ferrari have stuck to its original plan, and it paid off. They have been learning their car inside out, gaining valuable experience with it - without the disruption of big setup or performance changes.

  • @ArkadiaII
    @ArkadiaII 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    can we give any weight to the scalloping in the top of the Ferrari side pods moving more, hotter air to the rear wing at high speed to reduce the total downforce at high speed? In my mind this would have the greatest effect when the ambient is cold and the engine is at full tilt (high speed straight) and is perhaps why it was less effective in limiting porpoising in Australia , because higher ambients. In my mind the scalloping is creating higher negative pressure at the louvres, drawing more hot air upwards as the speed rises. The rear of the side pod might even tumble that air outward inducing a vortex, powering the diffuser but dumping hot air all over the beam wing and under side on the main rear wing section, reducing the downforce. Less plausible is that the high slot gap to the radiators might be less well fed at low speed and get a healthy dose of air off the front wing as speeds increase, aiding in energising the top louvres. These are the kind on non movable but variable aero tricks that must be all over cars at this level. I understand that WEC Hypercars employ similar techniques to get inside their allowed downforce window.

    Why Do Boats Porpoise?
    A boat can porpoise because the weight in the boat is disproportionate between the bow and the stern. It might also be because of the trim angle of the engine and the mounting height of the engine difference.
    Another factor that can lead a boat to porpoise is the hull speed.
    When the bow wave gets larger and longer the boat starts to tip backwards because it tries to climb it's own bow wave. This is called hull speed. Hull speed is diminishing returns, when you add more power you get a steeper bow wave, and the boat has to do more work.
    Porpoising is the result of the motor’s outdrive pushing the boat upwards, essentially boosting it out of the water - albeit for a short period of time. Once the boat comes back down, the outdrive will once again push it back out of the water. This cycle will continue to repeat until either the boat’s speed is reduced or the trim is fixed.
    I don't think this is any different to a ground effect f1 car?
    bow = front wing / sidepods
    stern = underfloor
    trim = beam wing + back wing
    Are Ferrari and Redbull aero design concepts aimed to cancel out hull speed?
    Is the Mercedes creating more drag because most of its rear (tyres and back) is exposed and not shouldering more aero?

    It's worth noting that the wind tunnel/CFD scaling is not just reset at the end of each year, but also mid-year at the end of June. From July on Ferrari will (probably) find themselves with the lowest allocation of all. They'll need to balance this extra time they have now between this year's car and any major changes they want to test for next year, since they'll lose the advantage long before the winter.

    Indy Car has used ground effects "Venturi Tunnels" under their cars for years and have no "porpoising". Maybe just Maybe Ferrari called Dallara (Italian company that makes Indy Car chassis with standardized ground effects for each car) to ask for help. Surprising other F1 teams especially McLaren hasn't just called up Dallara or a Indy Car engineer on the telly and asked how to stop the hopping. Indy Cars run at over 230mph on the straights with no bunny hopping, with the McLaren Indy Car team running with excellent pace.

    • @solinvictus1234
      @solinvictus1234 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ferrari was building cars with ground effect when Dallara wasn't even a company. They have an archive full of datas about anything they did in F1 since their debut. I'm pretty sure that they do not needed to calling Dallara for that. And i'm pretty sure that their sidepod design derives from that past ground effect experience.

    I hate Ferrari because of that F1 agreement that gives them money because of their name, hated them for years. Then they rolled this car out in preseason testing, and I couldn't believe how beautiful the car was, it was as if Ferrari made the most beautiful car and then surprised themselves when it went so fast. Beauty and fastest race car are two things that don't go together in motorsports and yet, in 2022 here it is, just wow.
    So although I don't like the Ferrari agreement, I don't like their roadcars, this F1 2022 Ferrari is arguably the sexiest car since I want to say 1956 Mercedes W196 (first to come to mind). Credit to you Ferrari I might not like you but I love what you created.

  • @devo196047
    @devo196047 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I didn't say this about ferrari, but when Mercedes was and is having problems, I thought it might be related to the inability of the zero pods to provide sufficient adjustability to cope with porpoising in an effective manner. That is the corollary to Ferrari's wider range of adjustment while keeping drag relatively low.
    It also explains Toto Wolf's innuendo involving Mercedes performance gains and how they are interesting. Interesting being a code word for maybe there's some cheating to be investigated.

    • @swisscheese1084

      In a way they are right tho. Not saying that they're really accurate but rather they're saying here that Ferrari solved the porpoising issue by limiting it only on the straights. It's solving the issue in a way that they just mitigate where the porpoising should occur.
