Awesome Ferrari 2022 Livery from Michael Hodgson - / e.mike.h
So, the next era of F1 is starting - and the cars are changing A LOT. There is a lot that will affect how these things will look, drive and perform - so let's go over them and give you our take on how they will (or won’t) change how the cars drive 2022.
Oh, and say hi to Craig Scarborough - the man who really understands how these big rule changes work - (he’s got some juicy stuff for us).
    Let’s get to it!

Now, the tyres might seem a weird place to start. But the majority of the F1 car design is focused around getting the most grip from them as possible - so they’re kinda the foundations to the whole car.
[‘I think the wheels, tyres and suspension are actually a bigger change for the engineers and drivers than the aero’]
The 13s have become 18’s, and with that - the sidewall has been cut down. Previously, the teams had so much sidewall that it made up the majority of the suspension travel in the car.
[‘So you you've kind of lost that much of sidewall, but the tire has gone from six, 60 diameter to 720. You've kind of gained another two of those inches back. So the cycle isn't actually as small as you would expect if you went from the same size diameter tire and just increase the wheel diameter, so you still got quite a big bit of of sidewall to play with. So all of these problems haven't completely gone away. They've just been reduced by a small amount.’]

    • @WhiskyCanuck
      @WhiskyCanuck 2 ปีที่แล้ว +162

I wondered about that too - riding the curbs too much will open up the gap underneath and I'd expect to cause a significant drop in downforce as a result. From the days when skirts were still used, when air got in like that while pulling Gs, the cars often go straight off track. But the skirts were flexible, this is a rigid structure, so maybe it won't be as much of a problem?

@@prasiddharajgurung The floor design causes extreme low pressure under the car. increasing the seal of the ground effect by actually physically touching the ground with the side skirts will only serve to DROP the air pressure even further. there is no way air could get "trapped" under to create such a high pressure as to lift the car off the ground as the inlets and the outlets at the back are huge. You would have to fully block up the outlets at the back and there's no plausible way that could happen during a race.

    Hello,
All the new rules are thought with, I think, an intention to go in a good direction for the race. I have one question about the new minimum weight though.
True it comes from new safety enhancements (which is great) and cost reduction concerns (which are understandable), but more weight also means more momentum, in crashes particularly.
Isn't there a risk that the weight increased so much over the past few seasons that safety measures will be rendered obsolete by the massively increased energy of heavier cars going as fast, or even faster just before an impact ?

Unlike the last big change to hybrids where it was clear Mercedes had placed their eggs, this major shift will be tilted to whomever gets the jump on the venturi nuances. There'll be changes to the DRS itself? If the dirt air will go up allowing cars to follow closer to each other I don't see the reason to have a DRS that powerful, they could at least reduce the power to have some legit overtakes instead of the underwhelming DRS carried ones we've seen so much in the last years

Hope they haven't placed most of the downforce on the grounding effect though, its potentially very dangerous because if you loose the grounding seal even a little bit, you loose pretty much all the downforce. Have a look at some you tube videos of people testing grounding with RC cars. If a driver damages the seal on a curb or another driver clips the seal, that could be the end of the drivers race. This is going to be a very different season.

*_"Hope they haven't placed most of the downforce on the grounding effect though, its potentially very dangerous because if you loose the grounding seal even a little bit, you loose pretty much all the downforce."_*
I see this all the time and I have no idea where it's coming from. The 1982 cars - the last to run as "wing cars" - had to stay away from kerbs because of the risk to their sliding skirts. That will not be a factor in the new rules because there won't be any skirts. So, in fact, driving over kerbs will not be any different in that regard from what it was. The difference will be in what happens to the tyres and how the suspension copes with it.

Great video as always, thanks. Like a lot of other people, I'm really looking forward to seeing how this affects the drivers and curbs. Cutting that corner by just a bit (and catching a curb), could seriously compromise the aero, just when you needed it most. Of course aero is reduced drastically by reduced speed, so it may not be as big a deal. Also curious about how strong these floors will be. I can imagine some of those big 'sausage curbs' we saw last year really causing a lot of damage. And if the floor is too strong, it could send the car airborne, too weak and you've got a disabled car and carbon fiber everywhere. Hopefully marshalls will be taking this into account when they place curbs and adjust accordingly.
