Made that look easy. New wheels look great. Say hey to Jack. Hope his build is almost done as well. It's been a lot of fun to watch this build. Be safe and thanks for sharing.
I really love how detailed you made this video! It will be extremely helpful in our future projects. We just bought a school bus and are going to work on converting it into our tiny home so things like this will be very helpful so we are definitely going to save it and refer back to it later! Thank you so much for such great content.
Thanks guys! I was hoping to see a video posted soon of your bus... looking forward to watching your build! Thank you for watching, I really appreciate it! Get started on that bus! :)
Excellent choices! My daughter and I started building my second camper last fall. Started with an old pop-up trailer because Illinois doesn't make it easy to title a homemade trailer. My first build was a HF 4x8 teardrop, so I have been looking forward to building a tiny travel trailer similar to yours. Beds for two means she doesn't have to tent camp with me! She's looking forward to having a bed and air conditioning. Your project has been so enjoyable to watch. I'm very excited for you to be camping soon! It's one thing to make one, it's a whole different level of satisfaction to use it. Congratulations! I hope you make it to the midwest some time, or that we can make it out your way!
Thank you Eli! I made the trip to the DMV and within 15 minutes had it registered and a new plate (which is now installed). I am waiting to hear whether or not I can still get it titled. I am sure I will need an inspection, just waiting now. Congrats on your new project! I am sure it will be a nice one! Hope you have some video... be nice to see your build. My first trailer was also a HF teardrop, my son outgrew that in one season, reason why I started this project. This has been a great time in the building and making of the videos, looking forward to the next project already! It would be real nice to meet up on the road sometime... wondering if there is a community of DIY trailers out there for a gathering, that would be really cool! Thank you for stopping by! C'mon out... the weather is nice! :) Cheers!
The community I joined is tearjerkers.net - it's a mix of homebuilt and mass manufactured teardrops AND tiny trailers, anyone is welcome! Even the big ones although they're not common. There are local state chapters all over the country. The one I belong to is the LoL chapter (Land of Lincoln) and you are absolutely welcome to join us for a gathering - check out the forum, also there is tnttt.com (Teardrops and Tiny Travel Trailers) for build-related info. TJ is the social group, TnTTT is the technical forum).
Good morning Al. Got to say those are some nice set of shoes that sure complement the trailer nicely. Hope your enjoying your Sunday morning and please send a shout out to the Jack man for me as well.
Thank ya Joker! Those new wheels give it a little personality! I will let Jack know you said hi and he will make it a point to say hello in an up and coming video, same Bat time, same Bat Channel! :)
I have an awesome car hauler that I bought for $2200. I noticed the torsion axles are shot. I don’t want to get rid of the trailer because it’s so well built. I think I’d like to get new axles and install them myself as well.
May want to seal all the way around windows and running lights. I went across the top and half way down on my lights and had water wick up inside. Sealed all around and problem gone. Just a thought. Great video.
love the new shoes has always great job i am kinda sad its over i cant wait to see whats next i hope you film some of the camping trip thanks again for sharing
Thank you Jason... bitter sweet moments for sure. Glad to be finished and using it, but sad to see it finished at same time. The next one will be just as fun, looking forward to starting that one soon! Cheers!
Not sure if anyone gives a shit but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can stream all the new movies on instaflixxer. Been watching with my gf during the lockdown =)
Curious what kind of warranty Flexride extends on these axles? Im in a bit of a pickle as I broke my second AL-KO axle. They are no longer around, and a direct replacement is no longer an option. I can spec out a pair of Dexter TorxFlex with 10 year warranty... although I still have not sorted out if those axles have replaceable spindles... but I digress. Warranty, and parts availability.
Hey Shain! Unfortunately, with SouthWest Wheel... they don't really have a warranty, more of a disclaimer. So, in reality... taking a chance that you get a good axle. Not looking forward to the day I break one (hope I never do!) Been going on two years now, and still rides nice and smooth!
@@OregonBatman Thanks for the reply. I don't doubt their quality. I've never had any issue with an axle until this AL-KO, and even then it was just sheared off spindles which means the whole axle gets cut out and replaced since it has to be welded to the frame. I'll most likely spec out a Dexter and call it a day. Again, really appreciate the reply. Information is very helpful.
Hello Mark! So far... very happy with the way it turned out! Everything is working great. I have not taken this off road or real rough terrain, BUT... have driven over HWY 101 on Oregon Coast, and if you have been on some of those roads, it's like being off road! LOL! Nothing moves around inside after taking a beating on some of the roads, which is a good clue the axle holds up really well! Doesn't jump around at all... my next trailer I build I will definitely use the torsion axle. Thanks for tuning in!
Good job Al: I have also installed a 2000 lbs. Flexiride axle at the beginning of my cavanan built project, I will probably have to do the same... Question: putting a much more strong axle won't cause the trailer to bounce a lot on rough roads? I also read that when loaded, the Flexiride trailing arm (not sure, it is the correct term) should be horizontal, that's the purpose of the spline: your opinion on that matter?
I weighed the trailer at 2050 lbs dry weight about two weeks ago, so I knew I was over my limit. With the new axle, I feel much more comfortable. After installing the axle, we took it out for a test over some rough roads (Jack followed behind). No bounce to it at all. I thought with the stiffer axle it would, but handles very nicely. The reason, partly, to set the spindles at 22 degrees, is mainly for the ground clearance... I may experiment in the future of setting it at zero, but for now, it seems to be working out fine. I will have to read up some more for the optimal settings. I have good clearance above the tires just in case I hit a nice bump.
Depends on trailer construction silcone peels off. Why the center caps how do you add grease? I have to figure a plate set up for torsion axles on an airstream that didn't have them installed... Need to run it 32" long though...
True... will require some maintenance on my part to keep things sealed up. The caps are bearing buddies, keeps things sealed and dirt free. There is a rubber seal in the center that pops off and reveals a zirk fitting to pump in new grease when needed. My next trailer will have plates to install the axle on instead of bolting through the frame. These will be welded on... could bolt through the side of the frame and then axle bolted to plates.
That's what I do. Just if any of you buy Rims for your trailers know this if the deal is too good to be true the rims are filled with styre foam. You should always buy billet wheels ... I have to drop off photos to a engineer to get plates made
Hi Al, can you describe the difference between a 2000 pound axle and a 3500 pound axle? What changes did the manufacturer make for the added weight rating? Thanks
Hey Ron, the tube for the 3500 lb axle has a larger dimension than the 200 lb axle to accommodate for the larger rubber inserts for the torsion. The spindles are larger also in comparison. Adds approximately 15 to 20 pounds. Heavy duty.
Ok, ya found the option to do it. How has that been so far? I’m wanting to make my pop up camper a toy hauler deck on the front and need to upgrade my axle and plate my frame for more weight.
A/C will probably be in the future for sure...! Not sure what price tag to put on this at the moment. We took it out for the first trip already (video soon), and luckily... there were no mishaps or modifications needed. Very comfy camper! Have a couple more trips planned before I get serious about my next project! Stay tuned my friend!
Looking Good sir! It sure has come a long way! Im still working on my camper, I just posted a new video the other day. Its been a while since ive done that.
Thanks Joshua! I'll be watching your video in just a few... glad you are back at it! I am getting ready for our second trip, and ready for some rest and relaxation!! Cheers!
Hi George... no, I don't think I will, not now anyways. I would have to hire someone to do that.... my comfort level is not that high for installing graphics! :)
Hi Off Axis Builds! Ride height was approx 15.5" +, after adjusting the torsion axle, brought it down to 12.5" thereabouts, keeping the center of gravity a little lower. Rides like a dream at 2000 lbs, no bounce. Plus, making it easier to get in and out of the trailer... enjoying so far! Thank you for stopping by! Appreciate that!
Oregon doesn't require trailer brakes... and most states require a braking system if trailer is above 3000 lbs dry weight. No way would I add an extra 1000 lbs to the 2000 lb trailer. I could have gone with a 6000 lb axle, but that would have been really stiff! :)
Hello Ludfi!! I purchased the axle at Southwest Wheel Company 4809 S Westmoreland Rd Dallas, TX 75237 - (800) 866-3336. You can check out the website at: www.southwestwheel.com/p-2312-3500-lb-flexiride-torsion-axle.aspx Thank you for watching!
The only ground-up 6x12 on TH-cam.
Excellent resource. Thx.
Thank ya Daryl!
Made that look easy. New wheels look great. Say hey to Jack. Hope his build is almost done as well. It's been a lot of fun to watch this build. Be safe and thanks for sharing.
Thank you Mordrayso! I'll tell Jack for ya! He's pretty happy with how his turned out... we'll give a walk through next week, hope everyone likes it!!

Thanks for sharing all of your videos, your build is awesome!
Thank you Jim! It has been a great experience and already looking forward to next project! Cheers!

Awesome! Thanks for the links... I will be sure to check them out!
I been building trailers of all kinds for 25 years, my hat is off to you sir fine job!
Thank you very much!
OregonBatman you’re very welcome
Of course you of all people prepared, great job!
Gotta look ahead sweets... gotta look ahead! :) Thank you for taking the time to watch, I really appreciate it!
Thank you. I learner lot !👏👏👏
Sweet! Thank you!
Makes it easier when the existing axle and hardware is not all rusted
Sure does... I remember those days of WD40 and stripping bolt heads, not fun at all! :)
Good morning Al. Got to say those are some nice set of shoes that sure complement the trailer nicely. Hope your enjoying your Sunday morning and please send a shout out to the Jack man for me as well.

❤ Awesome video!!!! How much was it back then?
Thank you! The cost back then was way cheaper! :) I think It cost a little over $7500 then. Might be $1000 to $1500 more today!
Amazing job and attention to details!! Well done sir!!
Appreciate ya watching and for the comments!

I purchased this axle from Southwest Wheel Company. Dexter axles are a good choice as well. Thank you for watching!
May want to seal all the way around windows and running lights. I went across the top and half way down on my lights and had water wick up inside. Sealed all around and problem gone. Just a thought. Great video.
Good tip... i will probably take that advice! I don't need any water creeping in! Thanks Papa!
Thanks for sharing!
That is cool you can choose your height, like it
love the new shoes has always great job i am kinda sad its over i cant wait to see whats next i hope you film some of the camping trip thanks again for sharing

waiting on that a/c unit. i still want to buy it Batman
I do have one picked out :) Not sure when I will pull the trigger on it... but as soon as I do, I'll be inside with a coat on!! :)
You need a Bigger ( inside diameter) air hose. To feed more cfm to the air gun.
Yup... it finally gave up the ghost and I broke down and got a better one, works much better now! :)
Looks great! Are you still happy with this install? Problems? Are you taking this off road?
Hello Mark! So far... very happy with the way it turned out! Everything is working great. OregonBatman great Thank you
Nice wheels.. I'm building my own trailer so I'm watching a ton of youtube vids...
Alpha1 That’s Awesome!! Sure hope you find my videos helpful! Wishing you the best of luck with your build! Cheers!

Thank you Al, it's good to know that the stronger axle does not bounce at all; I will follow your example. Please let me know if the situation change.
Sure thing! Keep me updated on yours when you swap out, I'll compare notes and make changes once you give it a test run if needed!
Depends on trailer construction silcone peels off. Why the center caps how do you add grease? I have to figure a plate set up for torsion axles on an airstream that didn't have them installed... Need to run it 32" long though...

You can always extend the fitting drill a hole in center cap ... I prefer steelies rims just easier stronger
But not the white shtty ones
Yeah... the white ones did nothing for the looks of the trailer, they work okay for a spare though! So I'll keep them for that.
That's what I do. Just if any of you buy Rims for your trailers know this if the deal is too good to be true the rims are filled with styre foam. You should always buy billet wheels ...

Al, OK. Sounds like it would not be practical to try to rebuild a 2000 axle to a 3500 axle. Best to just replace.
I would say it wouldn't be practicable to modify... unless you went with a tandem axle. Swapping out would probably be best.
Can you add brakes to this style of axle?
Yes... the flange is made to be able to install brakes. When purchasing, you do have the option of buyng with brakes installed
Ok, ya found the option to do it. How has that been so far? I’m wanting to make my pop up camper a toy hauler deck on the front and need to upgrade my axle and plate my frame for more weight.
So far has been great... a very smoth ride. I do like the torsion axles
I am a RV Adjuster I sure would like to Buy that one. Too Hot in Louisiana not to have one.
Hi
I have old torsion axle but its too much hard how can make it more flexible?
Unfortunately... you cannot adjust a torsion axle. If the one you have is too stiff, you will need to replace it with a new one.
Cheers!
Next time you have a nut you can't break. Use a cutting torch and just heat it up a lil bit. It will loosen right off.
Great tip! Thank you!
Al, will you be putting any graphics on the t railer.
Hi George... no, I don't think I will, not now anyways. I would have to hire someone to do that.... my comfort level is not that high for installing graphics! :)
What was your ride height before and after?
Hi Off Axis Builds! Ride height was approx 15.5" +, after adjusting the torsion axle, brought it down to 12.5" thereabouts, keeping the center of gravity a little lower. Rides like a dream at 2000 lbs, no bounce. Plus, making it easier to get in and out of the trailer... enjoying so far! Thank you for stopping by! Appreciate that!
Worried about 1mm difference in the axel but puts a brand new wheel on with a banged up bearing cover tht is going to fling grease all over
luckily... only the outer edge was bent up. So far... no grease flinging around!
Can that king of axel been put in a Utility trailer
Hey Jose... yes it can. It has mounting plates that can bolt right on to the frame af any trailer
Ok thank you I have a CM enclosed trailer and need to replace a similar axel as this one
There is no springs suspension
Still no lighted bracket for the tag??
No worries mate... that was installed yesterday and works great! That may not be on video right away, but it is there and looks good! :)
what no brakes? 3000# load without brakes is asking for trouble. JMHO
Oregon doesn't require trailer brakes... and most states require a braking system if trailer is above 3000 lbs dry weight. No way would I add an extra 1000 lbs to the 2000 lb trailer. I could have gone with a 6000 lb axle, but that would have been really stiff! :)
Paint your walls in your garage , dude , nice job on the camper also
I know, right? I keep saying that to myself too! One of these days, that will have to get done!! :) Thanks for stopping by GlockmanGG!!
Dimana saya bisa mendapatkan flexiride torsion axle 3500lb om?
Hello Ludfi!! I purchased the axle at Southwest Wheel Company 4809 S Westmoreland Rd Dallas, TX 75237 - (800) 866-3336. You can check out the website at: www.southwestwheel.com/p-2312-3500-lb-flexiride-torsion-axle.aspx
Thank you for watching!
You would be, “THE FUN NEIGHBOR”.
Yes indeed... I WOULD!!! LOL!
You guys don’t believe in rust do you
In the high desert, worried more about the boiling point than rust! LOL!!!
