Hey guys. So I live in Canada so I have to go by kilometers. Currently my Equinox has 313000km. The same original engine that it came in. The secret to these engines is the oil changes. DO NOT follow the oil life monitoring system because they are so way off with the calculations. Always change around 5000km and use full synthetic oil. I had to watch Clay's video to remove the intake so that I could replace my fuel rail sensor. Thanks for the video Clay

excellent video clay..I had the same problem..intake was leaking..through trial and error i found if you remove the ac line where its held on by a clip..you can push the ac line safely towards the front of the fan shroud.. it gives you alot room to safely maneuver the intake manifold out without damaging it.. worked on my 2012 terrain..

If you are having these same types of issues, I highly recommend removing the heat shield when the engine is cold and check the exhaust manifold for cracks, it's worth checking because these are very common on the GM 2.4l engines around 100k miles

The Clay Way Those exhaust manifolds are all cracked; the crack is hidden by that heat shield until all possible warranties have run out. It would be interesting to know exactly how many of those replacement exhaust manifolds have been sold by GM, AC Delco, Dorman, and other suppliers. None would have to be sold if they didn't all crack from normal use. As many of you know, these cracks allow illegal emissions to get into the atmosphere, and adversely affect the exhaust settings by the engine computer. If you have enough money, you can get away with almost anything, so it seems.

A couple things to make pulling the intake much easier is, 1. Remove the throttle body before removing any other bolts on the intake. It makes removing the hose under the throttle body much easier. Also give access to the dipstick bolt. When installing the intake, put the hose and dipstick bolt in before the throttle body. 2. Remove the belt from the air conditioning pump and then remove the 3 bolts the mount the air conditioning pump and swing it out of the way. Intake comes out much easier.

Thanks for this video. Having stripped some of those Equinox threaded bolt holes before, using power tools, I have learned to find out the torque specs and use the correct inch-pound torque wrench when tightening them up. Being a shade tree type mechanic, I would have used my torque wrench to tighten each intake manifold bolt before I took the whole thing apart. Your results were great, but I suspect that you would have gotten the same result if you had torqued the bolts before taking the intake manifold off. Anyway I have a similar issue with my 2010 Equinox 2.4L and will be torqueing those intake manifold bolts on my Equinox first thing in the morning. Thanks again for the video, for the brake cleaner diagnostic trick, and for calling the problem to our attention.

    • @trillobite5487

I noticed at least on the intake manifold, it has metal cylinders where the intake bolts run through... apparently it won't allow you to overly squash the intake gaskets. (Maybe I have a manufacturing defect?) Also, I ended up over-torquing my bolts, since my torque wrench wasn't working properly for the first few bolts (didn't click)... and it seemed to seal up just fine still. Very interesting design by GM, but I think the torque spec is more to just hold the intake on, rather than provide a specific seal. :)

The next time it starts running poorly at night time look underneath it, and see if the catalytic converter is broken, sometimes catalytic converters break off on the inside and block the flow of air, and then the broken part gets moved away by the exhaust from revving and stuff like that and the only thing that I could think of the idle air control
You could also try tapping on the mass airflow sensor as it’s running and if the idle changes then you’ve got a bad mass airflow sensor you can tap on it with your hand and then if that doesn’t do anything, you can hit it with your Fist it’s hard to describe over a text message. You don’t want to hit it too hard but you also don’t want to hit it too gentle either. You just don’t really want to break it if it’s not already broken that’s about the best I can think of at the moment.

I noticed when you took the intake off that your center "PCV" breather hole was plugged. I just cleaned mine today, it looked fine, but I couldn't spray cleaner through it, meaning it was actually plugged somewhere inside. I also noticed that my intake valves were severely carboned up, so I put seafoam spray on each one with the intake off. My 2.4 ecotec has 80k miles on it.

If you want your equinox to be problem free "out side of the camshaft solenoids" they will go out but they are cheap and easy to replace. CHANGE THE OIL! If the oil you use says "good for 10k miles" NO! Change your oil every 3-4k with a new filter. Make sure it's full synthetic oil! Change the transmission fluid every 40k miles. It's cheap and easy. The Equinox is a must be very well maintained vehicle. I have a 2015 equinox with 57k only issue was the camshaft solenoids. I've had it for almost four years. $44. for new camshaft solenoids. Thats not to bad. It needs clean fluids! Oil sludge will kill this vehicle.
Edit will I buy another one? Hell no! I'm going Toyota. Ford, GM and Dodge/Fiat can kick rocks. The quality isn't there anymore.

As a mechanic of 15 years let me just say your oil life indicator on GM vehicles at about 3k will say there is somewhere around 60 to 40 percent oil life left. If you run till it says change oil you will have engine problems it's not the fault of the owner they are changing it when there told. Trust me go 3k on non synthetic and 5k on synthetic. If it has a turbo use full synthetic and change at about 3k to 4k. Your life expectancy of your engine will be so much longer. Ignore what the dash says.

Always bleed off the fuel pressure before removing the fuel line. The fuel line is a one time use on the high pressure pump. Using a sanding disc on your pneumatic tool is a bad idea. It will mess up the surface and put debris in the engine. General motors has a bulletin stating that issue. Clean the gasket surface on the cylinder head with a razor blaze and gently remove the debris.Replace the intake manifold gasket O-rings also. Replace that broken plastic line that you have tapped up that goes to the solenoid and the intake manifold that is known vacuum leak when it cracks. Use a torque wrench on the plastic intake manifold bolts.

The pcv orifice was blocked by engine oil sludge and needed serviced at the same time, on a side note why not just replace the intake seals and ensure the job was done correctly. If the orifice allows the engine to build crankcase pressure it will case the rear main seal to blow. The GM 2.4 LAF is actually known for this condition.

I don’t remember if this model has a Schrader valve on it or not but if it does it’s always best to release the fuel pressure prior to doing it and at the very least just crack the lines loose if you’re working on one of the high-pressure fuel line systems that will allow the fuel to bleed out slowly and not spray up in your face. There’s nothing really super complicated about it or anything that you need to worry about that I can remember. I hope that’s helpful for you have a great day

The 2011 I've worked had an incident last week and although didn't give a code for those valves, it had a code for wrong crankshaft position (or crankshaft position not plausible), but it didn't die and made it back from Detroit to Jackson. So my most educated guess was that if it was a timing problem and intermittent at that, had to be in the variable system.

The 2019 is a different model style than these ones. I want to say it was around the 2017 model year we/they stopped making this particular body style with this particular engine.
Also, if you have the V6 it has different issues. This 4 cylinder came out of the Cobalt engineering line and it wasn't very good to start with. It was also part of Chevy's "Eco friendly" era where they made us straight up lie a lot and claim these cars can run 7,500 miles on oil. That caused a ton of problems because we got gag ordered by higher ups to not tell anyone that this engine should have a 3,000 mile oil life cycle. I can tell you now because they have no idea who I am anymore. There are a ton of recalls and extended coverages on this vehicle that are almost exclusively related to the engine being run like it's something it's not.
As for the V6, it seems to fair a bit better, but it's not perfect. Honestly, I'd steer clear of Chevrolet. I've never had any issues voicing concerns over at Toyota USA and they seem to realize that they hire engineers to engineer. They aren't perfect cars either, but Toyota is about as close as you're going to get to perfect.

    Spark Plugs
    Chains
    Block
    Oil Filter
    Cam Phaser
    High Pressure Fuel Pump
    Head Gasket
    Head Bolts
    Injector Cleaner
    Sea Foam
    Coils
    Compression Test
When I drive the car it is fine but when I'm at an idle and or parked the rpms start to go down and chug a little bit kind of sounds like a misfire in a way and then just dies unless I give it gas.
You think this may fix my issue?

Good afternoon Joshua I’m very sorry to hear about your unfortunate circumstance.
When you pulled the intake off of the car did you clean out the PVC valve hole that is plugged on the bottom side of the intake?
You will know that it’s plugged because you will have a creamy white substance coming out of the return hose that is pushed into the side of the intake this is an extremely common problem and generally causes the rear seal to go out of the engine I hope that information is helpful if you’ve done all that other stuff this is more than likely about the only thing it could possibly be

I'm having the same issue. 2012 equinox 2.4L 106k miles. I've replaced alot to try and solve my problem but nothing. I start it up runs fine for about 60 seconds then roughly dies.

Yes I do agree these are the things that make you go hummmm .... A guy that’s been working on cars for over 20 years or some random Internet comment.
The channel is about saving people money . That’s why I don’t waste money buying gaskets that are not necessary and just show you how to check them like I did in this video. Some people don’t understand that nickels and dimes add up to dollars. Personally I don’t have a lot of money so I try to save the people who watch my videos as much money as possible.... it’s not a paper gasket and that’s the reason that we don’t throw tires in the landfill because rubber is forever.... anyway
Personally I’ve never broke anything with my impacts. But then again I have over 20 years of experience so I guess I know how to use them

If you takeoff the plastic engine cover that covers the top of the engine on the intake you will see a tube that runs from the center to the driver side of the engine that tube is probably broken. More than likely that would just be what I would look for first it’s very simple to find it has a cover over the tube so you will have to remove the cover around the tube it looks like a long snake and it’s made of plastic sorry I wish I could give a better description than that. Hopefully that’s helpful for you just give it a look

You start it up and sounds fine and about 20-60 seconds it chugs and dies and stalls.
    I have replaced the following.
    1. Throttle Body
    2. Actuator Solenoids
    3. Spark Plugs
    4. Coils
    5. Intake Manifold
    6. Injector Rail/Injectors

    8. High Pressure Fuel Pump
The Timing Chains and Heads were replaced before this.

Have you checked the PCV valve on the intake? Within the next week I’m going to make a video showing people how to check this because it is a very common problem you have to remove the intake and it is a small hole where the intake surface meets the cylinder head it’s an extremely common problem that most people overlook even me I did not know about it Till A guy at the new shop where the Channell is sponsored .
I hope that information finds you well take it easy and I hope to speak to you in the future

Well actually. If I remember correctly it was a while ago. That I made that video I’m pretty sure we had the head disassembled and reassembled it because I actually built the motor in that engine new head gasket timing chains valve guide seals gaskets etc. I did it on the cheap though so I didn’t send it out to any machine shops I did all the work personally and filmed it so people at home could do it themselves. I only made the video to show possible reasons why it would not idle or hold an idol and to describe the problems that they had. But maybe I’m mistaken thank you very much for the input have a great day
